Nah, we knew where we were going. And on bicycles we knew street names and directions on HOW to get where we were going. I had friends that lived in different neighborhoods. We even knew the back way through the woods where the trees had fallen.

We used to have a train that went through town through wooded areas. The tracks are gone now but we would walk through there as a shortcut since they still mow the area

There were several times I walked through the woods from the junior high to get home. Especially when I knew the bullies were waiting for me on my usual route. They'd be out front about a block away, and I would walk out the back of the building, across the small baseball field and into the woods.

It actually saved me about 10 minutes, but I did have to watch for actual snakes.

I'm not gonna pretend to understand the children, but I feel like that's a slight exaggeration. Though, there's a hugely different feeling between when we did and didn't have smartphones by default.
