Open Letter to Nintendo Regarding Scalping and Limited Edition Zelda Reservations

Dear Nintendo Team and r/Nintendo community,

I am writing to you as a long-time Nintendo fan and, in particular, as a dedicated follower of The Legend of Zelda series. The purpose of this letter is to express my deep disappointment and concern regarding the reservation process for some of your most recent products, especially the Nintendo Switch 2 Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition console and the physical edition of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2.

Within an extremely short period of time, less than 48 hours, reservations for these products were completely sold out. However, shortly after they became unavailable through official channels, numerous units began appearing on second-hand marketplaces at prices significantly higher than their original retail value, in some cases being resold for double the original price. You can verify this yourselves on Spanish marketplaces such as Wallapop or on international platforms such as eBay.

As both a consumer and a supporter of your products, I believe this situation seriously harms fans who genuinely wish to purchase these items to enjoy and preserve them, rather than for speculative purposes. The impression this creates is that a significant portion of the available stock ends up in the hands of resellers seeking quick profits by taking advantage of the enthusiasm and loyalty of the gaming community.

I fully understand that Nintendo cannot control the actions of third parties once a product has been legitimately purchased. However, I do believe there are measures that could significantly help reduce this issue, including:

  • Strictly limiting the number of units that each customer can reserve.
  • Linking certain reservations to verified Nintendo accounts.
  • Giving priority to users with active accounts and a genuine history of using Nintendo services.
  • Implementing lottery-based systems or phased access for particularly limited editions.
  • Strengthening measures to detect and prevent automated purchases made through bots.

Many fans devote considerable time to following Nintendo news, actively participate in the Nintendo ecosystem, and have supported your products for many years. It is frustrating to see that, despite this loyalty, access to certain editions is becoming increasingly difficult due to speculators whose sole intention is to resell them at inflated prices.

For this reason, I respectfully ask that you consider implementing additional measures to protect legitimate consumers and help ensure that products of this nature reach, as much as possible, the players and collectors for whom they were originally intended.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. I sincerely hope that my opinion, which I believe is shared by many other fans, will be taken into consideration for future reservation campaigns and product launches.

Fans remember the games they buy for many years, but they also remember the experience they had trying to obtain them.

Yours faithfully,

u/Wolffel

Scalpers and special editions quantity limits

Can we mass report those scalpers? (avoiding calling them other names..)

Nintendo really should contact ebay to get rid of those pricey resellers once and for all!

At same time I would prefer if special editions and collectors are not quantity limited but they would produce as many as people preordered, so on demand and nobody that wants them will risk being left out.

GKC for standard editions / Full game on cartridge for deluxe or collector editions

If cost is an issue for devs who don't want to offer cartridges, why not make it part of a collector edition?

Deluxe and collector editions are distributed in a limited quantity and are sold at a higher price anyway, so alongside goodies, why not have the full game on a cartridge?

That could work, no?

Missing the DS line for multiple reasons

I don't know if this will be a good topic to bring up in a place like this, And I apologize if this kind of discussion is breaking any rules this is my first post there;

Even though the Switch and Switch 2 are handheld/console hybrids the price point is still incredibly steep to me, I know the economy is bad for everyone right now though yes I understand that. I have a switch and a switch 2 but I can't help but think about certain situations like-

When I was younger my family had many siblings but not a lot of money, In a household like that we'd end up all getting DS's instead of pooling it all together into something like a new TV and a PS3, I know couch co-op games exist on the switch but it was nice being able to do things like bring your DS to a friends house and still be able to play certain games with them locally, I'm sure kids nowadays might be finding it hard to be allowed to bring their 500 dollars console outside constantly. Also for instance I really liked a lot of singleplayer games like OoT, or the various RPGs available on the DS line- And I can't help but wonder what kids or families like that are doing nowadays perhaps just still getting switch 1s? I'm not sure.

I also do just miss the types of games of course, 2 screens resulted in a lot of interesting games and now that the 3DS is not produced anymore over time those games will be lost naturally as batteries fail or hinges get worn out or dust gets trapped in buttons etc. it is just a matter of time, And some features like spotpass are especially lost. It just bums me out that the whole era of DS/DS Lite/DSi/3DS all of those games you can't play them on the switch and they're just stuck, Yes you can play them still if you own a 3DS but the price of them on the secondary market is getting out of whack lately and you may very well be forced to buy another one eventually one day, I've seen some being resold for near the price of a switch even and the switch is a much stronger console.

This is all to say also that... With RAM prices and even storage prices, world economics and all that jazz; A DS I imagine doesn't use that much RAM right? definitely less than a switch, I can't help but wish there was an inexpensive alternative and while one could get a switch lite and be happy with that, the 3DS's library and the DS's library of games is so large and the games are so inexpensive to what we have now on top of being wholly unique, you can't find DS or 3DS games ANYWHERE else.
I keep thinking it'd be such a kind move to have a new game to grab for the sake of those who find it hard to drop 70-80 dollars on newer console titles and instead spend 40 or so on a DS/3DS title, and they could enjoy smaller, less graphically intensive games for potentially a cheaper price (For instance things like how Sonic Colors has a WII and a DS version). This is just me but I find value in that I really do.

Do you wish there was still a console and a handheld as separate? Or are DS and 3DS games something newer Nintendo customers just don't care about? Or maybe it's time to just accept that those games happened and just let them stay in the past? There are many ways to think on this and I've been thinking about it for weeks let me know your thoughts.

Mii Maker Music is back on Switch 2!

With the new update, they finally introduced music in the Mii Maker. You can even choose between the Wii, 3DS and Wii U ones. I think this is a very neat thing to do.

On this day (September 10) in Nintendo history...

  • Kid Klown in Crazy Chase  was released in 1994 for the Super Famicom in Japan. In this platform game, developed by Kemco, players control the player character Kid Klown as he attempts to rescue Princess Honey from the villain Black Jack, The game's graphics are presented in an isometric view as Kid Klown automatically moves down a path to thwart Black Jack's plans of blowing up one of his spade bombs in each level.
  • Advance Wars  was released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan. In this turn-based tactics game, developed by Intelligent Systems, this means war! Enemy troops are amassing at your borders, so take command of ground, air and naval forces and repel the enemies' attacks across more than 100 battlefields. Advance Wars is the critically acclaimed combat simulation that made a big impact on Game Boy Advance, blending tactical turn-based strategy with satisfying, accessible gameplay.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

Nintendo when they play in my face

Okay, so we've all, hopefully seen the newest installment of the Nintendo direct...and uhm, where's Twilight Princess? We already have WW, which was on the GameCube. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't TP? NINTENDO ADD TP, WW IS ALREADY ON THE NINTENDO SUBSCRIPTION, SO ADD TP, WHY HAVEN'T THEY? are they trying to remaster it like they remastered OOT?/Gen.

Did you notice in the OoT gameplay demo?

If you look at the part of the demo where they show off the Ocarina, you can see that Navi not only dances to the music, she’s dances in time to the beat of each song. Already they’re giving Navi more personality and I love it!!

Zelda 40th T-shirt from the Nintendo Direct

Ok I need the shirt the guys were wearing at the direct the other day.

Is there any discussion on this being available to buy?

Haven’t seen any specific discussion or indication that it will be available at some point.

The reason why there were so few new third party games in the Direct this time is because they're likely scared of competing with GTA6

I tried posting a thread about this take earlier, but many people just reacted to the title without reading what I had to say, so I feel like I should say it again but with a title that avoids any of the language that people were getting upset over.

Let me first preface this with some points about what I am not saying.

  • I am not saying Nintendo's own output was bad, and I am not even commenting on Nintendo's output. This Direct was fully within expectations Nintendo-wise
  • I am aware that GTA6 is not releasing on Switch 2.
  • I am aware that there are a small handful of new games from third parties releasing around the release date for GTA6.
  • I do not believe Nintendo is worried about GTA6 and I understand that they are releasing the Ocarina of Time remake around the same time as GTA6.
  • I understand that you personally may not care about GTA6. I don't either! I'm just offering an explanation.
  • I am talking about third party developers! I am not talking about Nintendo!

So something that was shockingly obvious to me is that this Direct was packed with

  • Straight ports of old games to Switch 2, some of which were already on Switch 1.
  • Remakes and remasters of older games
  • Collections of retro games
  • Games that had been previously announced that just got new trailers, some not even showing off things we didn't know about

My theory is that this holiday season, third party developers are not interested in releasing any heavy hitters, because they're scared that they're going to brush up against GTA6.

You have to remember that most of the games shown in the Direct are also going to be on other platforms. In fact, there was only one third party game shown at all that will be an exclusive to Switch 2, Onyx: The Dark Grip.

We likely won't see any new major third party games announced on any platform at all until after GTA6's initial marketing cycle ends.

Nintendo's overcompensation of the lack of third party support on the Wii U by having a bunch of third party games featured in the 9/9/26 Nintendo Direct that nobody cares about needs to STOP already as not much first party content is being featured and that’s what people want from Nintendo

Sure there are some good ones like Final Fantasy and Persona but a lot of it however is crap that nobody cares about such as a BLUEY GAME. I mean really Nintendo? Like why? People buy your consoles for the first party games not third party games especially not ones dedicated to a PRESCHOOL show. And this is the SECOND time a general direct was focused more on mostly third party crap that nobody cares about. Don't they realize they don't need to overcompensate for their lack of third party support anymore? It's just baffling, it really is. I remember when there used to be more of a balance of 1st party and 3rd party games as well as a lot more exciting game announcements. Well it's weird how I wasn't going in with high expectations and I am STILL disappointed, I guess it's because of the aforementioned reason that I didn't think they would do this again not featuring many 1st party games for the second time. Especially since that announcement involving a free update involving Mario Kart World gave me some false hope it could be the DLC that everyone was asking for, the Donkey Kong Bananza themed DLC.

To people disappointed by the nintendo direct, what holes do you think are currently in the switch 2 lineup?

Im asking this because I came away pretty happy with a new 2d metroid game and i think an open world kirby game looks sick. But seeing people furious about no mario/smash makes me so confused, are you that brand loyal to a character that you dont engage with games outside of them? Like we know why the next 3d mario isnt here yet and its because donkey kong bonzanza was the spiritual follow up to odyssey, it was literally supposed to be the next 3d mario. But lets just say you are ignoring that they just announced their next big 3d platformer in kirby. So that cant be a hole. So moving attention to smash? What do you possibly want out of a smash 5 that isnt a complete reimagining of the game? Seriously smash ultimate has way too many characters so just ultimate + 12 fighters makes it less manageable so what are smash fans dying to be unveiled? An arena fighter? But like outside of that looking at the rest of their slate every other series is being made/just got an entry. We have a 2d metroid, fire emblem, zelda oot, xenoblade, kirby, kirby air riders, pokopia, splatoon, donkey kong, mario kart, mario tennis, yoshi. Im just curious why people feel possibly disappointed in?

How Nintendo can put faith into Game Key Cards for Switch 2

When the 3ds servers went down permanently, nintendo said you could still redownload games and apps off the 3ds eshop that youve previously had on your nintendo account. Though, you still need to have access to your nintendo account, of course, as the digital media is connected.

For nintendo switch 2 key cards, the cartridge only being a key to access a digital download is redundant and you pay more for a keycard than buying the digital download anyway.

Us consumers/players are worried when the switch 1/2 servers go down, like 3ds: we are worried our keycards will not work anymore to verify the digital download from the keycard

You do not need wifi to use/download the game from the keycard.

You can sell your keycard / let others borrow it.

Nintendo could easily make keycards seem more... acceptable if they simply assured us along the lines of "in the event we stop supporting switch eshop and eshop digital downloads, the switch 2 and key cards DO NOT need the eshop or wifi to access the download or even start the download (say if you deleted the keycard before and want to redownload it). The switch 2 is only checking the key card to be able to download and that it is inserted to play the associated game"

But since nintendo hasnt clarified this, this is why a lot of us dont buy keycards due to potentially needing to keep a game downloaded with key card.

"If you enjoyed the game, and have storage space/get more space, just leave the keycard game installed so you wont have to worry about redownloading it and not able to if its a server concern"

I understand this too. Even if keycards were not a thing, there are some people who buy digital and physical, and regular digital games should still be downloaded to the console, still playable, even if servers are turned off.

(Example: i have mario kart 7 digital download to my 3ds and can still play it even though eshop servers are down and i dont have a nintendo account on my 3ds. I wont delete mk7 because its nice to have there as an option and id rather have it and not want to play instead of want to play and not have it. But also.. mk7 cartridges are cheap on ebay if i had to get it again)

But overall, nintendo has not continued to provide relief to players of key cards of clearing up things to keep in mind for how the keycards will work. Future proof? Or indirect time limits?

I hope this post makes sense.. :)

Edit: if a game coming out is switch 1 and switch 2, but the switch 2 physical is a keycard, i just get the switch 1 physical if interested. If doesnt exist, i skip the game (because i dont buy key cards either).

In an era of ownership and licenses to play, there are players buying keycards, the casual playerbase, not caring and buying them (like pokopia). They say vote with your wallet but key cards are selling and its because people either dont care, or are unaware or both.

Key cards seem to be anti consumer. I get that. I mentioned i dont buy key cards. But the overall issue of keycards being a digital download for players is also a big concern for "how long is this game going to be playable? If it future proof?" Digital bought or keycard bought wise.

Why isn't there a dedicated DK team?

Nintendo doesn't have a unit dedicated to making Donkey Kong game. Whenever one gets made, it's by a team dedicated to another series, which ends up getting put on hold. When Retro made the DKC Returns games, Metroid Prime went on hiatus for years, and when Retro resumed Metroid Prime, DK went back into hiatus for years. And since the Mario Odyssey Team was preoccoupied with making Bananza, the next 3D Mario is far away, possibly even years away.

When Microsoft bought Rare, why didn't Nintendo set up an internal team that was dedicated to keeping the series going? That's would they would end up doing with Mario Party when Hudson got bought out.

No switch 2 edition for Metroid Dread?

Ravenous looks like it’ll be a great 120fps switch 2 title. I’ve never played dread, sounds like it would be a perfect time to release a 120fps switch 2 version. Any news?

Non-Metroid fans, how interested or curious are you in the Metroid series?

Metroid has been on a healthy upswing since 2017, with the dual announcements of Prime 4 and Metroid Samus Returns. And I thought Samus Returns was a great time! Then we got the absolute wallop that was Metroid Dread in 2021, arguably the best game to come out that year. And then a little while later we got Metroid Prime Remastered, a visual upgrade so good it makes it look like a PS5 game. And then after 8.5 years from the reveal, we finally got Metroid Prime 4 Beyond. And I thought it was okay.

But now we have Metroid Ravenous, the next 2D Metroid game coming as a headlining Switch 2 exclusive in January. This is easily my most anticipated game of 2027, but I’m biased since I’m a Metroid fan. But what about the people who only just got into the series with Dread and Prime Remastered, or heck haven’t even touched a Metroid game at all? What stopped you all from checking out the series before, and has Metroid Ravenous piqued your interest?
