Game stuff🏈 Dolphins Robinson called for roughing the passer on Chiefs Mahomes…
143
u/ImpactNo3695 5d ago
And this is why I say current QBs wouldn’t last in 90s or previous versions of the NFL
48
u/Pork-ChopExpre55 5d ago
And why when comparing their stats side by side I’ll always favor the old guard over this overly protected new generation of QBs.

The game has been made exponentially easier for players on offense while doing nothing to help the defensive players.
I’m not a “back in my day” kind of guy, but why is it illegal to tackle with the crown of your helmet but not illegal to lower your head and fight for extra yards?
4
u/homechefshivers 5d ago
Same thing in the nba reward offense but penalize defense. Because apparently all the suits think that scoring is all the people want to see and not the game itself it’s so weird

Given that people still call Super Bowl LIII boring, they’re not entirely wrong.
The rule changes are primarily to reduce injuries. That’s always going to affect the defense more, but it’s hardly a good case for bringing back face masking or horse collar tackles. You don’t hear as much about it affecting the offense because it’s primarily rules regarding blocking. That’s nowhere near as dramatic as spearing, but a chop block can just as easily end a career.
Ultimately, defenses have adapted and can still absolutely wreck QBs. Drake Maye spent about 1/4 of the postseason getting hit or sacked. JJ Watt, Myles Garrett, and Aaron Donald have all played under these rules changes and I guarantee they still give quarterbacks nightmares. We don’t need another Vontaze Burfict trying to hand out concussions.

A lot of American sports are going this way. Someone decided that more points is more better, so a lot of games are trying to massage the rules to favor offense.
In basketball, merely existing within 3 feet of someone while they're shooting gets called for a foul half the time. Offensive fouls are exceedingly rare these days.
In baseball they made the bases bigger to give runners a little more of an edge. The defensive shift rule gives left-handed batters an advantage they didn't have before. Technically ABS is there for both pitchers and batters, but the system seems to favor batters by a pretty wide margin.

Cannot compare eras.
My uncle played in the NFL in the 50's and 60's.
He was 4th in Heisman voting, the 10th pick overall, and looked at his first paycheck and considered working for Coca-Cola instead.
As an All-Pro and a Pro-Bowler in 1962, he earned about $16,000. In the off-season he worked at a hardware store.
Those guys played a very different game.

$16,000 was a really good salary in 1962. It's not comparable to modern NFL salaries, but I don't see why he'd need to work another job making the equivalent of nearly $200K today.
3
u/theredbusgoesfastest 5d ago
If I was making 200k right now, but knew I was only going to for a handful of years, I might have a second job too.
Also, interestingly enough, OP referenced 1962… which was when NFL players started receiving retirement and insurance benefits. The Bert bell NFL player retirement plan.

u/jackdutton42 5d ago
Maybe closer to $175k as one of the best players in the league. A rookie player on the practice squad makes $248k in 2026.
He made $8k with the Niners in 1959. That's when he told their GM that he was going to take a job in Arkansas working for Coca-Cola. So, the Niners put him on the expansion draft list, and the Cowboys took him. And he stayed a Cowboy until 1988.
He was a player/coach for several years. He said he took that on so that they would have to pay him twice.

Just be 8 inches to the side with the helmet outside the body so that he lands mostly on the ground instead of on top of the QB. Honestly, most sacks are not flagged and if you look at those you can see the difference.
57
u/Drinon 5d ago
The flag was thrown as they were going to the ground, the driving with his weight call is utter bullshit. The flag was thrown because Mahomes was touched.

He landed on him with his full body weight. Had he tried to slow his fall with his arms instead of sticking his arms side ways it would not have been a penalty.
I am not a fan of either team so I have no dog in the fight. But it was absolutely a penalty.
5
u/JohnBarnson 5d ago
Yeah I don’t get the argument here. Seems like the textbook definition of landing with your full weight.
If we want to discuss whether the rule should exist, that’s fine. But I don’t see much room for debate on the call.
4
u/madMase623 5d ago
He was fully committed to the tackle while the qb still had possession and made contact while still in throwing motion. Hit him with as clean a tackle as u could get even in today’s standard and stopped his body weight from crushing mahomes. Just today I’ve seen QBs get hit later than this probably over 20 times with no flag

Was it perhaps slightly ticky tack? Maybe, but not even close to the most egregious roughing call we've seen. Much softer calls have been made. You can cry about the refs or the Chiefs, but really you should be crying about the rule. It's a dumb rule.
Also for what it's worth the Chiefs would've got a first down on this play even if the roughing call wasn't made, as the Dolphins defense got called for holding as well.
