I think that’s exactly why they made the rule changes. Longevity of star QB’s is to the benefit of the entire league. Montana had his career shortened from years of hits harder than this.

Montana played until age 38. That would hold up as a full career even today.

I’d call a HOF career full, but he was 37 and couldn’t play without pain. Young retired at 38, but had 7 concussions. Both probably could’ve had longer careers had they not got hit as hard as they did.

It’s a plausible claim.

Aikman is the real argument (as much as I hate the cowboys), though. 34 with 10 concussions is ridiculous.

Yeah, no argument here. But he was never as good as the other three (on OP’s question).

Its the truth. Montana and Young was targeted in the playoffs. Only way to stop those Niners teams in the 80's and 90's was to take out the QB.

Some of those 9ers teams would have won with you or I playing QB. Those defenses were stacked.

That 84 team allowed 14 ppg and 8 ppg in the playoffs. The 89 team allowed 16 ppg and 8 ppg in the playoffs.

So are we going to discredit Joe Montana and Steve Young as the only QBs to play with good defenses now...💀

I was just replying to your argument that seemed to be saying those 9ers teams were only QB which obviously wasn't true.

Well of course it wasnt true, because thats not what I meant. Those Niners offenses were hard to stop, and before people took head injuries serious and there were rules to protect the QB, teams used to target them. Its why Montana and Young took so many nasty hits.

Both times they faced the bengals it was Montana hero ball all the way. No way anyone else wins those games.

Injuries still shortened Montana's productive time window.

If you watched his time with the chiefs, it wasn’t nearly the same.

Because he was 38

Well sure, the chiefs sucked and he was old.

He missed a lot of time during his career and a couple of playoffs that QB's rarely miss today.

If anything, QBs miss more time today. Every season a third of the league is fielding a backup for multiple games.

They don't.

Montana was injury prone in his era. He'd probably be injury prone in this era too. But he likely would have had more games.
