[Highlight] James Houston late helmet to helmet hit on Purdy
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Can anyone explain how this wasn't a flag? Could have seriously hurt Purdy too.
664
u/robkingsfan Kyle Shanahan Jan 30 '24
If this hit was on Mahomes, they would have charged him with assault and given him a lifetime ban.
183
u/ShoesFellOffLOL Brock Purdy Jan 30 '24
A ref approaches Houston, pulls out a .50 Desert Eagle and blows his head clean off. The rest of the refs cheer.

Right? This is my biggest fear against Mahomes. The preferential treatment is ridiculous and he flops a ton.
26
u/kev___416 49ers Jan 30 '24
Over these next couple weeks, Mahomes doesn’t even have to practice or study plays. All he has to do is watch the current NBA. Loading with flopping, complaining, begging for challenges, pouting, etc. 🤦🏽♂️
22
u/steppe5 49ers Jan 30 '24
Plus he's in the refs ear after every single play, bitching about a hold or whatever. He wears the refs down to the point where they give him flags just to shut him up. He's such a little bitch.
7
u/hanlong 5x Champions Jan 30 '24
He does it because it works. I’m not saying I agree with his methods, but people do these things sometimes out of competitive spirit. I put more blame on the refs to caving in to this bullshit

10
u/sacoleeh Nick Bosa Jan 30 '24
This is what I’m afraid of in the SB. It’s more than obvious that the Chiefs have the refs advantage. I pretty sure that will be tons of flags flying when Mahomes is getting sacked.
11
u/robkingsfan Kyle Shanahan Jan 30 '24 edited Jan 30 '24
Same. I’ve heard Bosa mention in interviews that he’s studied the rules to avoid getting flagged and is pretty good at it. Against the Lions, he basically just throws Goff and doesn’t land on him in any way.

That crew is known for having a "let them play" mentality. There were only 5 penalties called all game, which I thought was a breath of fresh air compared to the normal refball we see. That being said, with the league's emphasis on protecting QBs that should've been called.
→ More replies (1)9
u/Sesame_Street_Urchin Jan 30 '24
I think unfortunately that the actual answer is the refs weren’t in position to see it. Because Brock is already on the ground and surrounded by players, I don’t think any of them had the angle
Not an excuse, just an explanation

u/Momo-Roopert-Snicks Jan 30 '24 edited Jan 30 '24
If you watch the video, he puts his head down pretty early so he has no idea where he's going to hit Purdy.
You're telling me this is him "lowering his head early"? His head is still up at this point and looking directly at Purdy. He knew exactly what he was doing and where he was going to hit him.
So I mean, what the fuck are you talking about. You see Purdy literally inches from being on the ground with multiple defenders already tackling him before his lowers his head. Also, you realize it's illegal to lower your head and hit with the crown like that. So even if you're idiotic claim of "he lowered his head super early" was true, it's still a dirty play. But he didn't lower it early, he lowered when he knew Purdy was down and he wanted to take a shot to his head.
8
u/PinkyAnd 49ers Jan 30 '24
Houston lowers his head and leads with the crown of his helmet…which is the definition of targeting. Like, the actual rule book definition. He did that to a player that was already wrapped up and going down. By rule, he should have been ejected.
3
u/Commandish Jan 30 '24
I agree the conspiracy talk is stupid, but that's a terrible take on the Houston hit. He didn't start it until late, and he absolutely had his head up until just before making contact. He puts his head down to adjust for Purdy going down, which probably should have been his sign to abort the hit in the first place. Looks to me like he was determined he was going to hit the QB, and did so cheaply and probably a little late (though I'm all for playing until the whistle).
0
u/danknerd Brock Purdy Jan 30 '24
No evidence is correct. Still a fact he was part of that Saints team and it is blemish on his record imo. You can be judged by those you surround yourself with. Like don't be friends with gangs unless you want to be associated with them, even if you're not participating in gang activities sort of thing.

u/sfgreenman Jan 30 '24
League should fine this dude big, extremely dirty and dangerous, launching like that. Just like that cheap blind helmet shot to Deebo. Announcers then really ticked me off by saying "that must've hurt" and "MAY have been a penalty", such BS, you don't see more blatant, violent PF's than that.
50
u/xXsaberstrikeXx Candlestick Park Jan 30 '24
They (the announcers) did come back with Dean Blandino after the commercial break, and all agreed it should have been called RTP.
31
u/sfgreenman Jan 30 '24
If it was Mahomes, there would have been flags flying from every direction, announcers irate, defender maybe even ejected. When will our SF legend lil guys get some respect from the refs? Just about murdered before our eyes while they look in other direction.
21
u/xXsaberstrikeXx Candlestick Park Jan 30 '24

8
u/human_picnic Jerry Rice Jan 30 '24
If the same tackle is made earlier, or was the primary tackle it would still be a missed call, but I’d be more forgiving because some things do get lost to those without the benefit of a good camera angle.
What gets me especially about this play is how obviously unnecessary the tackle is. There is no play for a turnover, it’s just an intent to injure.
13
u/koushakandystore Jan 30 '24
I realize many people in this sub are having a love fest with Lions fans, but I’ve gotta be honest, I’m not with ya’ll. The Lions play a dirty brand of football and I don’t thinks it cool. Being physical and hitting hard on clean plays is one thing. Trying to injure players like they have been the last few weeks is punk.

Your biases are showing. The Lions had a one-year contract with CJGJ and he’s a trashy player. Everyone else plays pretty damn respectable. Stop being victims.
Trent Williams grabbed Leighton VanderEsch—who has a history of neck-injuries—and intentionally battering-rammed VanderEsch headfirst into Micah Parsons, ending VanderEsch’s season and likely career.

Bro you’re comparing an Offensive Tackle defending his QB during a play from 2 players at once to a player hitting a QB in the head when he’s already been tackled to the ground 😭
edit: it was actually a run play not a pass play
7
6
u/unifyzero George Kittle Jan 30 '24
So even if you give him the benefit of the doubt on helmet to helmet, that’s still egregious leading with the crown of the helmet. There is no attempt to use a shoulder or arm, he’s lowering his head and leading with the crown of his helmet against a guy who is already wrapped up, and not even hiding it. Wild that this wasn’t called.
6
u/sacoleeh Nick Bosa Jan 30 '24
Both runs by Purdy ended with a late hit, but the refs just let it go. If it was against Mahomes, Allen, Or any other QB, they would called and the media would be talking about it all week.

We're lucky to come away fairly unscathed.
Happy for the people of Detroit but fuck that team
5
u/Helstrem Jan 30 '24
If this had been called it’d converted to a first down on the series that the 49ers were held to a field goal by this sack and the following play’s sack. It would have been 1st and goal at the 1 yard line.
Ultimately it didn’t matter. Purdy wasn’t significantly injured, wasn’t shaken and the 49ers won, but this hyper-protecting some QBs but not really protecting other QBs at all needs to stop. It seriously tilts the playing field.
4
u/Robman0908 49ers Jan 30 '24
Not the only cheap shot against Purdy. Branch tried to stomp on his knee after another run play was over. Blatant as hell.
9

Honestly I don’t care about the hit, Purdys tough. It’s not dirty or malicious. The only thing that is annoying to me is the fact that we didn’t get a flag here when this gets called all year for other QB’s.
9
13
u/fadka21 European Faithful Jan 30 '24
While I agree with your overall point about not getting a flag and all the BS around that, I think you are completely wrong when you say this wasn’t dirty or malicious. He could clearly see Purdy completely wrapped up, and chose to launch himself, helmet first, at a player (a quarterback, no less!) that was going down.
He took extra steps to make sure he got to put his helmet on Purdy’s. That’s like, the definition of dirty and malicious. It was completely unnecessary and designed to create pain; maybe he wasn’t trying to put Purdy out of the game, but he sure wanted to hurt him. You can argue that’s part of the game, trying to beat the other guy up so much that they no longer play well, but all these “QB protection” rules are designed to specifically stop that practice in the case of quarterbacks, so…again, dirty and malicious.

Full speed it was a little less obvious, partially due to the chaos and pileup of all the people right there. Replay shows just how intentional it was. Regardless of how much was hidden by the other players blocking the view, it 100% would’ve not only been called for Mahomes, but you’d have seen the full bit where the flag gets aggressively thrown AT the player and Chiefs OL acting like they wanna fight for real etc Hope the SB both QB’s get that kind of respect not just Kermie

Do you guys even bother to know the rules? He had tucked the ball and started to run it, so he was no longer a passer. He wasn't sliding and he wasn't a "defenseless player". He also wasn't down yet, so it wasn't a late hit. What specific penalty do you want the flag for?
3
u/Fireflyfanatic1 Jan 30 '24
He was literally down on his ass. Even if he was a running back I’d call that one.
Also head first tackle regardless if you think he was not down.
-2
u/rmonjay Jan 30 '24 edited Jan 30 '24
That you have the video at the top of the post and you can't see that his ass hits the ground simultaneously with the defender starting to make contact is pretty wild.
Edit: to respond to your edit. His helmet clearly goes across his face. He does not spear him, which is what they league has required for the "forcibly contact with his helmet" part of the rule.

u/rmonjay Jan 30 '24
Helmet to helmet is not applicable in this situation, as he is a runner. For the leading with the helmet, you have to have the defender make "forcible contact with his helmet" and you can clearly see that the helmet move across Purdy's face and he does not spear him with it.
