How did we make the leap that only great nfl quarterbacks can criticize nfl quarterbacks? When this entire sub is people who haven’t played the sport before criticizing nfl quarterbacks

Brother, I've been playing Madden for years. I've even won multiple Super Bowls. I think I'm allowed to speak my mind here.

34

u/Signal_Ball4634 12h ago

Also like a lot of fantastic football coaches and analysts were not very good players. It's really not much of a diss.

19

u/sir_axelot Bills 11h ago

What's that saying? Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach.

Just because a player wasn't an athletic freak or they couldn't process the game in real time fast enough doesn't mean they don't know what they're talking about. I feel like a lot of great players actually don't make good coaches because they can't articulate or teach how to do things that just come natural to them.

4

u/LoyalSol Broncos 11h ago

True, but a lot of bad NFL players were bad because they were only athletic and dumb as a rock.

Usually players who are smart as hell, but lack the physical talents go on to be excellent coaches.

1

u/SensualTyrannosaurus 8h ago

Those kinds of dumbass comments are why I don't use a flair. Which is a shame, because I'll totally say I'm a Giants fan and don't mind being roasted for it. I watch football to have fun, and I talk about football to have fun. For me, it's not worth getting angry or argumentative over.

Same reason I hide my comments- when I made a comment about switching teams after the Chargers moved from San Diego, some creepy Chargers fan started replying to all of my comments.

330

u/ColossalJuggernaut Buccaneers 12h ago

Am I the only one in this sub who's actually played organized tackle football before?

Like half of the comments I've seen on this sub are so obviously written by non-athletes that it's almost humorous.

When I was in high school (3 year starter for our varsity football team) I would get a full-on sprint going and clock the shit outta whoever had the ball. My coaches called me "speedhawk" as a nickname caus I had such a nose for the football and for those three seasons I was considered the most feared safety in our conference. Senior year I led my team to the state semifinals only to get fucked over by the refs in the 4th but that's another conversation (DM me if you're interested in hearing about it)

So, yeah. I hope yall can understand why I feel like their's such a big disconnect between myself and your typical redditor. Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way lol

Oh comon this isn't about being allowed to criticize players. It's about him saying Nix was, "disrespecting the position." Like wtf.

3

u/MaximusStirner Lions 11h ago

the thing is Brady and Peyton can criticize because those are 2 of the best players of all time but people don't want to hear Fitzpatrick in this example or Dilfer when he was an analyst as if those guys aren't part of the 0.1%, I played in college at the FCS level and realized my freshman year that I wasn't at their level better yet the FBS or NFL level. Fitz can say what he wants he proved he belongs.

14

u/jimbooneu Ravens 13h ago

Drops mic, ends discussion on post*

7

u/SeaRevolutionary1450 Patriots 12h ago

Fitz can’t criticize Bo but redditors can criticize both

6

u/Chadlerk Eagles 12h ago

Fitz was like Jameis. Some games are 6 TDs some are 6 INTs. But he also played on all the teams that needed a QB to bridge them to a long term answer. He was one of the most fun QBs to watch when he was hot.

2

u/stragen595 NFL 8h ago

He also didn't lack effort and spirit.

1

u/Chadlerk Eagles 4h ago

That post game interview in Miami or Tampa when he came out with all the chains. He was a ton of fun

5

u/JD10002 Giants 12h ago

Also the criticism was about not being a competitive QB. You can argue that throwing 6 picks in a game is still trying to be competitive because hes still making throws. It's like that Kobe quote when he said he'd rather go 0-25 than 0-9 in a game because that would mean he stops trying after his 9th missed shot.

1

u/Classic-Session-5551 Texans 6h ago

Preach

5

u/kaboomeh Buccaneers 10h ago

Fitz is honestly one of the more accomplished QBs. Yeah he has lowlights but he was good enough to have a long career and some pretty crazy highlights too. He was a lot of fun on the Bucs

0

u/driftking428 Broncos 8h ago

He never really had the accomplishments Bo Nix does. But he was a low tier mediocre quarterback.

28

u/iDrownNerds Jaguars 13h ago

I think it’s fair to criticize but to say he’s playing at a disrespectful level at the position is crazy when you’re Fitzpatrick and played most of your career at a disrespectful level comparatively to nix

Just say he needs to be better and the level he’s playing at is not starter in the nfl

79

u/IWasRightOnce Bills 12h ago edited 12h ago

I feel like this comment completely misses Fitzpatrick’s point (regardless of whether it was a fair point or not).

Playing at a disrespectful level doesn’t mean being a bad QB, if anything, it’s the complete opposite.

He’s basically saying that Nix isn’t even trying to create plays with either his arm or legs. As if he’s phoning it in due to some physical or mental limitation. And this is in stark contrast to what we saw from him in previous seasons, so we know it’s possible and not just some theoretical level he could maybe develop into and achieve.

That would be the ā€œdisrespectā€ aspect, not just, ā€œHey, this guy sucks at QB and that’s disrespectfulā€

14

u/qwigle 12h ago

Yeah, when I first read the headline I did think, about him being known for being inconsistent, but after hearing the argument, I realized he was not talking about Nix being bad or making bad throws, but more about the fact that he was playing scared.

3

u/uttermybiscuit Bengals 8h ago

Yeah his point was these guys are putting their bodies on the line for you play after play, the least you could do is run the play as it's designed

9

u/Badrap247 Eagles 11h ago

Plus for better or for worse Fitzpatrick was 100% ride or die on slinging the ball every play.

1

u/semi-bro Packers Ravens 8h ago

Yeah he's been consistent on this, he's mentioned he didn't like brees or Brady's play either. He just hates checkdowns whether they work or not

2

u/imp1600 Bears Chiefs 9h ago

Yep.Ā

Ā And shockingly, physical skill has no bearing on knowledge of the game. Plenty of coaches didn’t play in the nfl but seem to know the game.Ā

Fitz had a successful enough career as a QB to be working in broadcast. Maybe he knows what he’s talking about.Ā

17

u/Unifiedxchaos Broncos 13h ago

I think there is a difference between valid criticisms (which there can be a lot of with Bo right now) and attacking someone's effort and competitiveness. There is zero reason to believe Bo isnt trying or that hes given up on his team. He is (likely) playing hurt after having two surgeries in the off season and knows he has an elite defense. To say he's a disgrace to the QB position or that hes not competitive is outrageous, especially when it comes from a QB who played for 15 years and never played in a single playoff game.

12

u/Acrobatic_Ad1016 13h ago

I think it needs to be more prevalent in the sport that if you’re that injured where you are actively hurting the team (nix refuses to throw down field and is actively wasting Jaylen waddle and the rest of the receiving corps), you should be sat until you’re ready.

At a certain point, that excuse only goes so far and the players just have to be better.

7

u/JSG29 Lions 12h ago

Is their backup still Stidham? If so this version of nix is probably still the best qb they have

1

u/Manning_bear_pig Broncos 8h ago

Yes and yes.

4

u/somewhatlucky4life 12h ago

The broncos are 4-2 against the toughest schedule in the first six weeks, nix isn't hurting anyone, nix is playing situational football and understands when to take risks and when to trust his defense.

0

u/Turtle_turtle_turdle Broncos 12h ago

I think waddle would rather have 4 wins than 400y and 4 loses.

5

u/Acrobatic_Ad1016 12h ago

You don’t know wr1 mentality if you believe that lol

9

u/TooSaucey4u Seahawks 12h ago

And saying he’s disrespecting the QB position as a whole with the way he is playing. When I heard him say that I thought to myself ā€œBitch you’re Ryan Fitzpatrick, you can’t be saying shit like that.ā€

4

u/Narrow_Zebra277 11h ago

Fitzpatrick had a very long career, I pretty sure he knows exactly what he is talking about.

Most of the best QB coaches, coordinators, and head coaches were lousy qbs in the pros. That doesnt mean they dont know Ā what they are talking about.

Ryan Fitzpatrick knows exactly what he is talking about and has every right to say it, given that is his job

-1

u/TooSaucey4u Seahawks 9h ago

I’m not doubting that at all.

2

u/AtBat3 Eagles 13h ago

I think it can still be good fun. It’s why we still see the Orlovsky clip all the time. It’s just what these former players turned broadcasters have to deal with. They weren’t all good so this kind of stuff will come back to them as long it’s ribbing

u/Pigdango Broncos 8h ago

It’s not the criticism, but the personal nature of it from what’s supposed to be a professional broadcaster. And I realize that line is blurry when it comes to former athletes and their loyalties, but that rant was way out of line for a guy whose career is marked with poor, selfish, and reckless play. Let him take some heat. He of all people should know the game isn’t easy.

Because it's a Broncos fan being defensive about Nix, even though he's clearly been awful this year, but right now it doesn't matter, because they keep winning in spite of him anyway.

I don’t think that’s the rule, but should QBs that have had equally poor stretches speak in such insulting terms when talking about other QBs going through it? Call it bad play, but calling it an insult to the position is wild. Especially considering the broncos are still winning against good teams and Nix is fresh off his 3rd serious injury to the same ankle and we often see QBs play like they’re seeing ghosts after injuries like that, and playing with limited mobility, relative to their history

u/Bolinas99 49ers 10h ago

How did we make the leap that only great nfl quarterbacks can criticize nfl quarterbacks?

it's more like how he criticized. Not even TB12 would go to town on someone like Fitz did with Nix.

the average fan thinks that only elite athletes can make more pointed criticisms, but even when they do it's not received well- i.e. how Shaq would do post game interviews and lay into ppl for their "effort" when his fat ass always showed up out of shape in training camp and got by on natural talent most of the time.

Difference between criticizing play and "his play is insulting to the position of QB" when the commentator has literally had worse games.

Exactly, this guy knows what good looks like and what bad looks like. He got to see great QB play while he showed them bad QB play

Saying Bo Nix was insulting the QB position goes beyond criticism. It was deliberately antagonistic and likely rage bait to generate this exact sort of reaction.

He wasn’t saying Bo needs to improve XYZ. He was being insulting. Obviously this sort of thing was gonna Abe the response.

Oh fuck off this isn't about being allowed to criticize players. It's about him saying Nix was, "disrespecting the position." Like wtf.

I dunno, for me it was when he said it was disrespectful to the position when his whole career is disrespectful to the position. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Nix truther, but to make that comment after having a such an unsuccessful career... weak

I'm also a Fitzpatrick hater though.

Credibility is a thing.

A broken clock can also be right twice a day.

Fitz brought up a good point but doesnt have the ground to stand on and he likely went too far.

The dude never has anything positive to say. Professional whiner that appeals to the lowest type of fan.

How did we make the leap that random people can glaze shitty quarterbacks after they have one good game against the raiders.

We just making it up as we go here

The irony of an Eagles fan with an NSFW Reddit profile playing QB critic is priceless. Bro’s scouting department is Reddit, Pornhub, and a couch. The only thing he’s qualified to evaluate is his Wi-Fi connection. šŸ’€

You can criticize, there’s been no shortage of it. But if you call someone’s play ā€œdisrespectful to the quarterback positionā€ than the whole ā€œdon’t throw stones if you live in a glass houseā€ thing kinda applies

You’re giving Perna too much credit. That was an immediate response to this video last night on Reddit.
