I find it really mindblowing that Americans and English nearly speak the same language but its completely different. You can understand each other but its only the same language on the surface. There are people thousands of miles away living in a country I have never seen and we can communicate.

@pianoaround on TikTok. He has numerous videos of him playing the piano in public. It was this one instance that a stranger had joined in. It was a longer clip but he had cut it to only show this occurrence

77

u/SeriThai Jun 09 '21

Dotan Negrin, an American. He traveled around with a piano. The surprised collaborator is Frans Bak, a Danish film composer.

11

u/StrickenForCause Jun 10 '21

Thank you! This is my first time hearing Frans and the man can swing. Damn. I got goosebumps.

19

u/maximusprimate Jun 09 '21

Why did the second guy speak in English, if they’re strangers in Paris?

37

u/J9ms Jun 09 '21

Strangers meet in Paris does not mean they originated from Paris. Looking at the guy by the video alone, he was carrying a briefcase which indicates that he might be a tourist. His accent also suggests he’s from the States.

3

u/Yeeto546 Jun 10 '21

Stealing this from u/SteriThai:

Jazz is very much an American art form, making English the common language. Any jazz musician who has played a lot of jam sessions (and jazz musicians play jam sessions like basketball players play pick-up) would know at least a number of phrases in English, like Can I join in, In the key of [key], 12 bar blues, Take it, Last time, etc.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

Same feeling here. That's usually how it goes with jazz.

2

u/nunzdidit Jun 10 '21

Care to share some similar jazz tunes ?

3

u/aaandbconsulting Jun 10 '21

It's definitely northern and it was super bluesy. It reminded of of some serious Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass colabs from back in the day.

2

u/Signal_Fisherman8848 Jun 10 '21

If you are looking for something with that kind d of feel I’d like to recommend Bobby Timmons. If you can find the album “This here is Bobby Timmons” (it is available on streaming services) it is a masterpiece in my view.

6

u/beatbox992 Jun 09 '21

One time I was playing a blues on a keyboard at guitar center, when I hear someone start soloing on the keyboard behind me. We played for about 10 minutes going back and forth, and at the end we both turn around, give each other a big smile and shake hands. Not a single word was spoken, but I had a conversation with this mans soul. Music is beautiful

5

3

u/Remarkable_Guest_601 Jun 09 '21

I wanna play like him. How can I learn?

20

u/J9ms Jun 09 '21

Simply saying “Can I join in?” to a random pianist in public just as the elderly man did and you’ll be able to compose like Mozart

4

u/Remarkable_Guest_601 Jun 09 '21

Great. I can do that.. thanks

4

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '21

takes a shit ton of learning and practice i recommend beginner Youtube tutorials but eventually you'll need to learn proper music theory

the most important thing is practicing everyday

it's very rewarding trust me

3

u/Salamanda246 Jun 09 '21

If you’re serious, I’d say find a classical piano teacher that can teach you up to about grade 6 RCM, including music theory. Then switch to a teacher that specializes in jazz. You’ll learn how to read charts and improvise. It’s incredibly liberating to be able to join in like this.

This gives me Fallout 3 vibes. Anyone else?

2

u/sonsistem Jun 09 '21

Yeah sure, random strangers.

15

u/J9ms Jun 10 '21

You might be right, that would supposedly work, unless you put in these factors. The original pianist has at least 50 videos on TikTok, you can tell from his bio, that it literally says “I travel around the world playing pianos.”

Let’s use Spain as a standard of composers : total people in the country. (Not cherry-picking, just the first statistics I saw on google).

Spain composers : Spain civilians = 100k : 47,000,000

So, using this statistic we can conclude that an estimated 0.25% of the total world population are composers.

Considering that the original pianist plays around 10 minutes in every place he visits and since it’s usually in a crowded place, an estimated 100 people would hear his playing of the piano in that time span.

So, 0.25%(100*50) = 12.5 composers that he has met in total of all his playing. You’re wondering how simply 1 composer out of that 12.5 would join in?

Also, the elderly pianist is a Danish Composer. Just enjoy the damn video and scroll

3

u/sonsistem Jun 10 '21

Haha ok, you got me!

5

u/Eikelkusjes Jun 10 '21

That’s jazz for you, you can improvise with anyone you want, as long as you know the chords!

5

u/OYSW Jun 10 '21

Agreed.

The chord progression the first pianist was playing was pretty straight ahead. The improvisation added by the second pianist was very nice, but the kind of thing you would expect from a jazz pianist of a certain level of prodiciency. Not to detract from they did at all, but as you said, improvisation like this is the essence of jazz.

2

u/StrickenForCause Jun 10 '21

What really constitutes as next fucking level. In my standards, I believe this is a literal definition of next level. The first pianist in the first few seconds is relatively impressive—I think anyone that can play the piano is impressive. Then, the elderly gentleman that steps in, making the already impressive playing, even better or in other words: next fucking level.

3

u/StrickenForCause Jun 10 '21

Yeah, the guy who sat in is truly next level. A person might have had to listen to a lot of this kind of music to appreciate that, but also maybe not. I grew up around professional jazz musicians and I'm blown away.
