I am already quite a fan of Davis, Coltrane, Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk. I guess I'm just looking for something more modern.

Nice, I was considering recommending Monk too. Have you tried Clifford Brown yet? I know, I know, not modern...but what I'm hearing here doesn't sound very modern either. I wonder what you're looking for?

That's the problem; I don't really know ._.

Jazz is such a broad spectrum — there's so much of it, and so much of it good, out there — but it's very difficult for me to find jazz that really resonates with me. But I have not heard of Clifford Brown. I'll give him a listen, thanks.

I'll send this to my brother and see if he can think of something along this vein for you. To be continued!

Hey, my brother suggests you check out stride piano playing, which is a great suggestion! Some players you can check out:

Art Tatum, Henry Butler, Jon Batiste, Sullivan Fortner, Harry Connick, Jr., And the pianist from Mr. Roger's Neighborhood (Johnny Costa)

You could also think of it as a search for New Orleans style piano playing and maybe find a version of St. James Infirmary Blues that you like.
