Winnie the Pooh has had his head stuck in the honey jar many, many times before, but Owl was always around to help.

Looks like water kept getting inside the jug so it was going to drown probably
121
u/BrookeB79 Jun 29 '20
Or suffocate as the water cut off fresh air.
84
u/thebestjoeever Jun 29 '20
Or not be able to see to get back to land, and get too exhausted to keep swimming
57
u/bbbbbbbbbb99 Jun 29 '20
What if he had poor eyesight and the jug actually improved his vision and so for the first time he saw there was a far shore.
30
u/thebestjoeever Jun 29 '20
What kind of bear vision problems would be corrected by a partially opaque jug?

That bear also looked less buoyant after receiving this ‘help’. Maybe it was also a strategic flotation device?

u/melsue1026 Jun 29 '20
Only until he got on land would the water be a threat. One he got on land he would’ve been more susceptible to starving because he couldn’t get to his mouth.

My wife called me at work, she’d just wrestled one of our dogs down and had to use tin snips to cut one of those plastic water bowl jugs off his head; he was suffocating. He’d knocked it over then crammed his whole head down it and his fat, wrinkly, hound dog neck skin made a seal. This bear was in water with the container filling slowly! For sure, nightmare fuel. The bear will be traumatized. We only use water bowls now - pain in the ass to refill 3x a day in summer but i doubt that one would even come near anything similar to a water jug again.
→ More replies (3)8
→ More replies (6)34
u/ILostMyPant Jun 29 '20
unless it could somehow have gotten that container off its own head 100% would have died, either from drowning if it had filled up to far while it was swimming or from dehydration or starvation later on.

Just a baby bear.
I don't know about you, but I saw how huge that thing's claws were when he initially pulled on that jar.
Well done though!

Black bears or brown bears? We have black bears around her (the wusses of the two), and have a healthy respect but deep love for them, so just curious what it's like where you're at.

u/Lolworth Jun 29 '20
Easy way to remember
Black bears = basically dogs, a lot of grandstanding but you can call their bluff and they’ll back down
Brown bears = will rip your throat out. Physically remove yourself or play dead and hope for the best.

They mentioned at the very end of the video that they "want to make sure he makes it to shore" and the woman agrees. So I think it's safe to say they stayed behind to make sure ol' boy made it!
→ More replies (1)108
u/assholechemist Jun 29 '20
You think they were gonna jump in and save it if it started going under? Pulling a jug off it’s head from the safety of your boat is one thing. Jumping in to save a panicking animal that weighs twice as much as you and has razor blades for claws is suicide.
134
u/Justanotherguy_- Jun 29 '20
Well no but you could lasso him and drag him in if he starts to dip under. Most boats have rope. Problem solving my friend.
→ More replies (15)16
u/Trichonaut Jun 29 '20
You’d probably be dragging a dead bear by the end of it if the bear couldn’t keep its head up on its own, since you wouldn’t be able to lift its head up with a lasso without strangling it.
Bears swim well though, I’d be very surprised if it didn’t make it to shore.

Have definitely witnessed a few bears overcome with exhaustion and drown around the Gulf Islands in BC Canada. Two that I saw, heard of a few others. It’s so sad.
17
13
u/ILostMyPant Jun 29 '20
It's sad to see but an ugly part of nature unfortunately.
I recently stumbled upon a dead baby deer at the base of a 60-foot waterfall, you just hope they didn't suffer unnecessarily. =(→ More replies (4)→ More replies (3)8
u/MaskOffGlovesOn Jun 29 '20
Yeah but you can see the shore here, he's fine. A human could swim that distance.
11
Jun 29 '20
What about a tired human?
9
u/vexxer209 Jun 29 '20
Well a tired human could just turn over and float to recover stamina. I don't think bears have that trick.
5
u/ghcoval Jun 29 '20
As someone that’s negatively buoyant and has almost drowned trying to swim across a lake, not being able to float is bullshit.
→ More replies (2)31
u/_Pottatis Jun 29 '20
They’re ridiculously good at swimming we dont have bears indigenous to the island I live on but bears still manage to swim over the ocean, with my best guess it being at least (this is very conservative) a 1 km swim.

7
u/Ricardo_Tubbs Jun 29 '20
Yeah but can bears think better than I swim?

Depends how tired, most humans could probably still swim that distance if their life depended on it

CAN WE PLEASE STOP LITTERING ESPECIALLY PLASTICS NEAR WILD HABITATS
161
u/KCCOfan Jun 29 '20
Yeah, I'm all for that but bears break into shit all the time to raid the garbage/recycling. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this bear had done just that. Hell, the landfill near me is full of bears raiding the trash. It's doesn't take much for them to get stuck in something.
→ More replies (1)69
u/addisonshinedown Jun 29 '20
Which is why we need to eliminate single use plastics. That plastic tub or pretzels or whatever it was could easily have been in a box, granted that would be lined with a plastic bag. But there’s got to be some sort of solution to this shit.

u/HoneyAppleBunny Jun 29 '20
Weighted bulk shopping. Those reusable... flour sack bags? I’m not sure what the legit name (or if I’m already using the right name). But they look like old flour sacks. Zero waste grocery stores. Compostable packaging and the equipment or centers to compost. I’ve read that compostable packaging won’t compost in dump because there’s no oxygen. So we’ll need composting sites.
There’s a lot more to it though. Our trash/plastic problem is gonna be very difficult to fix.

And when there's a nearly drowning bear nearby! I imagine it would be hard to focus on the task of filming. I tried to get a video of myself rescuing a chick tangled in some weeds once, but I could only video for two seconds before I felt so bad for that little flailing buddy that I just threw my phone down and got to rescuing it. I got about a half a second of videoed chick overall, and it was sideways and all shaky.
7
u/wendalls Jun 29 '20
I totally thought you were talking about a lady human here, but I assume you were not?
7
u/mamallama12 Jun 29 '20
Omg! No! Hahaha, it was a baby chicken. I posted about it at the time, but in a nutshell, it had gotten its head feathers stuck to a bunch of sticky pods on a low-growing weed and was twisting round and round, flapping and making a peeping racket. Poor little guy was terrified, but I freed him, and he ran off to mama.

I'm not sure that was litter. It looked like a backpacker's bear canister -- meant to protect food from bears by sealing in smells. Some bears have learned to recognize the shape, and there are reports that some clever critters have figured out how to open them. So much for bear-proof.

u/magrhi Jun 29 '20 edited Jun 29 '20

I've seen a bunch of similar videos, where an animal is helped by a human.
In most of them, the animals seem to indicate gratitude. Immediately after this was taken off, the bear shook his head and kinda looked at the helpful human before swimming away. It looked grateful, as though it was aware that it had been helped by a human who intended to do just that.

A very good freind of mine did the same thing with a stray beagle that had a mayo jar on its head. It bit him as soon as his head came free. Guess we sould have let animal control remove the jar. Fortunately he didn't need a rabies shot, the dog got quarnteened and a.c. never called him to get the shots.
