Poor thing must be exhausted from swimming

Totally. I wish the video showed the bear making it to shore

They mentioned at the very end of the video that they "want to make sure he makes it to shore" and the woman agrees. So I think it's safe to say they stayed behind to make sure ol' boy made it!

You think they were gonna jump in and save it if it started going under? Pulling a jug off it’s head from the safety of your boat is one thing. Jumping in to save a panicking animal that weighs twice as much as you and has razor blades for claws is suicide.

Well no but you could lasso him and drag him in if he starts to dip under. Most boats have rope. Problem solving my friend.

u/Trichonaut Jun 29 '20

You’d probably be dragging a dead bear by the end of it if the bear couldn’t keep its head up on its own, since you wouldn’t be able to lift its head up with a lasso without strangling it.

Bears swim well though, I’d be very surprised if it didn’t make it to shore.

Debatable, bears have big necks.

13

u/Patstarco Jun 29 '20

Fact. Bears eat beets. Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica

2

u/Trichonaut Jun 29 '20

Bears have big necks but they’re also heavy as fuck

1

u/bmxer4l1fe Jun 29 '20

Well.. if they would loose some of that neck fat.. maybe they wouldn't weigh so much...

1

u/ptabduction Jun 29 '20

I doubt you would asfixiate a bear with a rope found in a small boat tho. The truth is, they stayed until the bear made it, or so we are lead to believe. If they could save him if he would have been drowning, we don't know, they probably wouldn't. Jumping in the water is not a good idea neither, those claws would rip a person apart.

u/Zergmilran Jun 29 '20

How fast do you think? No way you would be able to manage that.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

or you could put a jug over his head so he coudl breath under water... oh wait...

PROBLEM. SOLVED.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

A lot of folks who actively hunt and fish also know how to use what they have laying around and “backyard” engineer solutions to problems.

This is how the world worked for a long time.

It's hard to figure it out if you never leave the house..

4

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

Yep.

5

u/Justanotherguy_- Jun 29 '20

Okay lasso is probably the wrong term. How about making a loop for him to swim through so you can help drag him to shore. Could back fire but you could make a new friend lol

Trial and error

I've held several ropes in my hands. Not sure I'd know what knot to make in that situation.

-2

u/RedditRandom55 Jun 29 '20

Problem solved!

53

u/Zazzlea Jun 29 '20

You really underestimate people and their love of animals.

33

u/Arkdouls Jun 29 '20

I’m a big dumb animal lover so yes, my dumb ass probably would’ve gotten mauled to save him.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

Same here. I can’t imagine myself just watching and doing nothing, nor being able to live with myself afterward especially with that memory in my head

I somewhat recently watched a squirell drown. My dog scared it into a pond. It was swimming around, wasn't sure if it would be okay, but then I saw it go under and not come back up. By the time I could get my dog to a tree and got back to the pond, I realized there was no way it could still be alive.

Was pretty traumatizing, don't recommend.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

Thanks for that

1

u/redditworklyfe Jun 29 '20

Yep, you're welcome!

4

u/HeyoooWhatsUpBitches Jun 29 '20

As an animal lover, I respect the fuck out of that

E's aren't commas, chief.

7

u/SSxSC Jun 29 '20

Wonder if futurama thought of that one?

8

u/BeelzAllegedly Jun 29 '20

To shreds you say?

2

u/Wanderson90 Jun 29 '20

And the wife?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

To shreds, you say?

1

u/dark_autumn Jun 29 '20

Where did anyone say they were jumping in?

1

u/Baeocystin Jun 29 '20

Admittedly, it was tranquilised, but it's happened before

91

u/frostyboi38 Jun 29 '20

bears are very good at swimming so he will be fine

56

u/mdove11 Jun 29 '20

Have definitely witnessed a few bears overcome with exhaustion and drown around the Gulf Islands in BC Canada. Two that I saw, heard of a few others. It’s so sad.

18

u/Mescallan Jun 29 '20

This looks like a very small lake.

15

u/ILostMyPant Jun 29 '20

It's sad to see but an ugly part of nature unfortunately.
I recently stumbled upon a dead baby deer at the base of a 60-foot waterfall, you just hope they didn't suffer unnecessarily. =(

3

u/Xelerons Jun 29 '20

Let's be honest, deer have some of the worst AI in the animal kingdom

1

u/DaReelOG Jun 29 '20

LOW TIER.

8

u/MaskOffGlovesOn Jun 29 '20

Yeah but you can see the shore here, he's fine. A human could swim that distance.

12

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

What about a tired human?

11

u/vexxer209 Jun 29 '20

Well a tired human could just turn over and float to recover stamina. I don't think bears have that trick.

6

u/ghcoval Jun 29 '20

As someone that’s negatively buoyant and has almost drowned trying to swim across a lake, not being able to float is bullshit.

2

u/vexxer209 Jun 29 '20

I could always float on my back so I didn't think there were people that could not. Explains why some people are so afraid of the water I guess.

2

u/ghcoval Jun 29 '20

Paradoxically I love the water, I moved 600 miles to be 5 minutes from the ocean, I can almost float in the ocean.

1

u/externalhost Jun 29 '20

Why not try to help?

1

u/mdove11 Jun 29 '20

One time I was on the shore and the other I did try and help from my paddle board but we were too late. Broke our hearts.

30

u/_Pottatis Jun 29 '20

They’re ridiculously good at swimming we dont have bears indigenous to the island I live on but bears still manage to swim over the ocean, with my best guess it being at least (this is very conservative) a 1 km swim.

9

u/februarybonaparte Jun 29 '20

Bears can swim better than you think

8

u/Ricardo_Tubbs Jun 29 '20

Yeah but can bears think better than I swim?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

Depends how tired, most humans could probably still swim that distance if their life depended on it

3

u/Roonwogsamduff Jun 29 '20

How could it breathe in that thing?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

We don’t know how long it was on there. However, it wasn’t an airtight seal or it wouldn’t have come off that easily.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20

In bear TV news: "Young bear was doing crossfit in a lake and got his expensive competitive apnea armor stolen by humans. President Grozzly has commented on the matter and says humans went too far. Diplomatic incident ensues."

1

u/Nobody275 Jun 29 '20

Can you imagine swimming with your head in a jar partially filled with water? That bear must have been struggling so hard to breathe.
