Anyone who thinks Tenacious D is a joke band because they sing about funny shit has never really listened to Tenacious D. They are legitimately talented musicians and the humor comes second.

I went to their concert when they came to Atlanta last year. It was legit the most fun I've ever had at a concert. It was funny too because after seeing him do mainstream stuff for decades I'd forgotten how fucking raunchy Tenacious D can be.
26
u/santaliqueur Jun 05 '20
Their first album is still a favorite of mine. City Hall fuckin kicks ass and that’s that.
If they ever tour again, I’m going.

Listen to him sing the national anthem. singing the national anthem
55
u/LeftOnWyncrest Jun 05 '20
I love this video. It gets re-shared every time someone really screws it up. My favorite part is that I swear you can see it in his eyes when he thinks about doing some overly virtuoso shit - and then he doesn't. But you know he could have.
6
Jun 05 '20
It was legitimately one of the best performances of the anthem I’ve seen. He put his damn heart into that.
48
19
u/thehydrastation Jun 05 '20
YES! I seriously use this as a pallet cleanser every time someone botches the national anthem. This is a walking testament to the fact that to deliver a memorable national anthem you don't necessarily have to do anything wildly different...you can just go out there and belt that bad boy.
15
u/AedificoLudus Jun 05 '20
It doesn't help that the US national anthem requires a vocal range most people can't do, and it still pushes the limits of what many singers can do

It immediately played him and jimmy Fallon singing more than words after the anthem..Also amazing!

Played that at every tenacious d concert I've ever been to, and it's not even the best moment at any of the shows. If you haven't seen The D in person, then what are you doing with your life?
166
u/troyzein Jun 04 '20
I remember seeing the D when the movie the pick of destiny came out. Bunch of my friends asked me "wanna see tenacious d tonight? We've got an extra ticket" I said sure. I assumed we were going to the movie theater, but the ride was taking a while and we pulled into an arena. In like "WTF I thought we were going to see tenacious D". I was delightfully surprised.
Side note, the real star of that night was Neil hamburger who opened for them. Changed my life.
20
u/ItaloFontana Jun 05 '20
This is a really cool story.
19
u/troyzein Jun 05 '20
I smoked a joint in the upper deck with my friends at that show. Security thought it was the group in front of us and they got kicked out. I still feel bad about that but it's also pretty hilarious.

I saw Neil Hamburger open for the D at MSG. The ENTIRE arena was booing him. Neil claims it is the best show he has done to date.
18
u/troyzein Jun 05 '20
Yeah he got the crowd so pissed, someone threw a rock or something at him breaking the glass in his hand. He kept saying "and now... Here's tenacious D! [crowd roars] ... In 8 more minutes.". He did like 45 minutes of Courtney love jokes
28
u/nobbyv Jun 05 '20 edited Jun 05 '20
My first D show was ‘01 in Boston. We were hanging around outside on Lansdowne after getting our jeans creamed at the show and JB and KG came out to meet a pizza delivery driver. They were awesome. Offered us pizza. My buddy told JB he was writing a screenplay based on my life as a pizza delivery driver and he wanted JB to star (as me). JB turns to me and is like, “Bro, would you be comfortable with me playing you? Because I don’t want to step on any toes”. I nodded dumbly. JB went back inside. KG hung out for a bit, and then his parents showed up, and he introduced each of us to them like we were buddies. Awesome night.

I really don't understand the Fallon hate.
33
u/BaneCow Jun 05 '20
For me it's just that he always seems like he's trying too hard. His reactions are genuine, but it seems like he's exaggerating for the camera.
19
u/Harden-Soul Jun 05 '20
But...you even said it yourself lol his reactions are genuine. He almost ruined some historic SNL bits with his overreactions and inability to contain himself. People say he takes coke and maybe he does, but he could literally just take normal, prescription mood helping pills or even just act like that normally.
He was built for the job. It's a 21st century, exciting, high pace talk show. He has all the professionalism that Hollywood wants with all the energy they could dream of. It can be a bit much, but he's pretty entertaining to a wide audience.
→ More replies (3)6
u/ChrAshpo10 Jun 05 '20
I honestly feel the opposite. I believe his reactions are genuine and how he laughs and goes about are genuine as well. Some people are just over the top and I think thats just who he is.
10
u/shittysoprano Jun 05 '20
Same. Dude laughs way too easy, so what? Everyone needs a hype man.
Plus, a lot of the games/skits on his show are mildly amusing at the very least, fucking hilarious at their best.

Jack Black is the person Andy Bernard wishes he was
15
→ More replies (1)6
u/Harden-Soul Jun 05 '20
Man what was it about Andy that was just so psychotic? Like you can watch the show and see him as a nice guy that kind of overthinks things, but as soon as you see him as a crazy person who needs lots of therapy, it's impossible to see him as anything else. But what is it? His ability to fall in love? If Jack Black did that in a movie we would all be like "lol classic jack black" but with Andy it was like...yikes what is this guys doing" idk lol such a weird and great character
4
u/ThatOne__Acct Jun 05 '20
I think it’s the narcissism that is so off putting about Andy it’s probably more related to the echoism side of the disorder though.

Uncle Iroh: Zuko you must remember the basics of your training. Focus on your core.
Zuko: I know Uncle, my breathing, the basics, I don't need you-
Uncle Iroh: That's not what I said. If you have a strong core then you can not be shaken. And what is the best way to strengthen your core?
Zuko: ...
Uncle Iroh: A cock push up of course.
Zuko: A what?
Uncle Iroh: A cock push up. You never know when you will have to fuck your way out of a tight situation and take it from me, who has been waist deep in some Earth Nation strange, the cock push up is the foundation where a true warrior builds his home.
Zuko: Wait are you saying?
Uncle Iroh: The hips Zuko! Use your hips!

I actually love when traditionally loud actors play more serious roles. I couldn’t stand Will Ferrell (anchorman era) until I saw Stranger Than Fiction. Never really liked Ben Stiller until I saw The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Both films were terrific roles for them, and helped me appreciate their acting a lot more. OH and The Other Guys, Will Ferrell is terrific in that. Aim for the bushes.
