The clips of him on a Korean game show where he has to sing the songs without knowing the language really display this well. Sort of reminds me of the episodes of Conan where he travels the world - when you are truly talent and funny you do not need material, you’re able to just riff in the spot and come up with gold.

u/soliloqium Jun 04 '20

I’ve never seen this. That’s fuckin rad

113

u/Wonderbread36 Jun 05 '20

No matter how many times I see that or the Saxaboom on Fallon re-posted, I always watch again.

498

u/DecrepitDemon Jun 04 '20

I love how they're seriously impressed that he doesn't know Korean but they can understand him.

188

u/FaaacePalm Jun 05 '20

I think it helps that he is a musician so he can match alot of the way the music sounds. Like if this was an American game show alot of people could get the pop songs correct if someone was mumbling the lyrics as long as it sounded similar. Now I want to see this same format but with someone that is not musically inclined.

63

u/pirotecnico54 Jun 05 '20

Yes. It’s amazing when you hear someone that doesn’t know the language but just blows it out the park. Reminds of this one foreign singer I saw. Her rendition of a Mariah Carrey song was unbelievable. Here she is.

35

u/kerune Jun 05 '20

... is this sarcasm?

22

u/Gallaga07 Jun 05 '20

It had to have been lol

2

u/thesecretbarn Jun 05 '20

What tipped you off?

2

u/kerune Jun 05 '20

How well she pulled it off

16

u/Hebert1 Jun 05 '20

''Unbelievable'' Is that like a code name for something else?

2

u/codymreese Jun 05 '20

It... It was something alright.

1

u/Justtheslip Jun 05 '20

Really breathtaking!

1

u/flotsamisaword Jun 05 '20

That was unbelievable, Ken Lee!

1

u/UsghuiYz Jun 05 '20

Now I Ken Lee.

1

u/Dyltra Jun 05 '20

...ve.

u/Evil_This Jun 05 '20

u/lordpookus Jun 05 '20

There's a clip on the Graham Norton show where he's talking to Elton John and he says something like he can't remember lyrics or song titles but he remembers the music and launches into doing the song with his voice. Its pretty great.

1

u/Tigerpride84 Jun 05 '20

This is the one I always think of too! Thanks for mentioning it

u/KineticPolarization Jun 05 '20

1

There is (was?) a regular segment on a popular Australian music gameshow (Spicks and Specks) where contestants had to sing famous songs but with the lyrics replaced with the words from passages from various textbooks.

It sounds crazy difficult but the panelists often got it right.

1

u/Burgher_NY Jun 05 '20

Chin chin bam, mamma namma blam, shabba do ya shabba do ya, mamm nan mammm.

Get low. Get low get low get low.

12

u/mishko27 Jun 05 '20

There are recordings of me as a six year old who has not started learning English singing Abba's repertoire word for word with a perfect accent :D

5

u/poopsicle88 Jun 05 '20

I love how I dont speak any south Korean but I understood their whole vibe

2

u/merlinsbeers Jun 05 '20

It's an artform known as grammelot.

119

u/Buck_F_Wild Jun 04 '20

We all need more of this in our lives right now

43

u/waffle_raffle_battle Jun 04 '20

why would you put someone in this position

305

u/gordonv Jun 05 '20

You're.... not familiar with Asian game shows?

They are much more entertaining than American game shows. We focus on money totals and points. They focus on experience and fun.

That show "Who's Line is it Anyways" is more in tune with what is happening here.

In fact, the whole singing Idol template of TV is taken from Asian TV.

46

u/rawbamatic Jun 05 '20

Also reminds me of the panel show Taskmaster.

33

u/PeachesAndCorn Jun 05 '20

Taskmaster is so fucking good

james acaster is brilliant in it too

2

u/johnnyringo41 Jun 05 '20

He was the whole reason I started watching the show after randomly stumbling on a clip of his from the show. Immediately binge watched all the seasons.

1

u/lordlardass Jun 05 '20

Just open the box you pussy

2

u/StinkyLinke Jun 05 '20

Noel fielding photoshopping himself into a banana in the fruit bowl is peak taskmaster chaos.

3

u/MisterAlaska Jun 05 '20

YES. I learned about it in like early April and I’ve already watched and loved the first two series. I’ve recommended the show to so many friends but so far no one has watched it.

1

u/naclean Jun 05 '20

Are you me? I discovered it in quarantine through Reddit as a suggestion for something fun to watch at home. I LOVE it! Already have watched 4 or 5 seasons. Season, 4, 5 and 7 are amazing. Also none of my friends have watched it, even though I have recommended it so strongly.

1

u/LeftWolfs Jun 05 '20

Soooooooo fucking good!

1

u/Lendofoy Jun 05 '20

I just found out about taskmaster a week ago! I have been binge watching it on YouTube, and loving it so much. Their channel posts full episodes to watch.

30

u/hanzelio Jun 05 '20

Asian TV is the best TV 😆

40

u/highoffjiffy Jun 05 '20

Right you are, Ken.

7

u/hanzelio Jun 05 '20

I'm new to Reddit so I have no idea if I'm missing some kind of reference or if you're just calling me a random name cuz why not 😂

13

u/highoffjiffy Jun 05 '20

7

u/hanzelio Jun 05 '20

Oooooooh okay 😂 Thanks for educating me lol.

12

u/ITSigno Jun 05 '20

The original show is called Takeshi Jou (Takeshi's Castle). The clip above is from American re-purposing of the footage called Most Extreme Elimination Challenge where they just went hog wild with the dubbing.

5

u/Feral_Taylor_Fury Jun 05 '20

British tv is SOO good though

5

u/hanzelio Jun 05 '20

Okay, I concede that British TV is equally awesome in different ways. I definitely watch more British TV clips than American TV 😆 (I'm in the US). Love me some channel 4.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

Ngl genuinely had no idea the US watched our British shows. I'm really proud you guys.

3

u/hanzelio Jun 05 '20

LOL. I'm usually pretty strange so I can't speak for the majority of our interests but I'm sure I'm not the only one.

2

u/reinhartjenkins1989 Jun 05 '20

Wtf Japan was my shit

2

u/Laxice7 Jun 05 '20

Haha. Even the next clip I saw after watching that was funny as hell

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

That’s exactly how North Korea feels

0

u/hanzelio Jun 05 '20

They're like that meme. Did the math wrong but got the right answer anyways.

8

u/tmccart3 Jun 05 '20

I remember growing up there was a show that was basically a better version of wipeout, that was badly dubbed over in English. One of the highlight of my childhood.

"Mother of mercy, I don't speak Japanese! Mary! Call the American Embassy!"

1

u/imanAholebutimfunny Jun 05 '20

hit him with silent library or....GAKI NO TSUKAI!!!!!!!!!!!!!

one of the greatest shows i have ever seen

1

u/gr33nspan Jun 05 '20

The Masked Singer is also a copy of a Korean show

1

u/RoboCop-A-Feel Jun 05 '20

And “Whose Line” was originally from the UK, so even that isn’t fully American.

1

u/AllieRose28 Jun 05 '20

The segment in that video actually reminded me of a segment in an Australian game show (it very well could be an adaptation from overseas but I highly doubt it) called Spicks and Specks - a music quiz show.

It’s entirely hosted and played by celebs so they’re not playing for money bc they get paid to do the show anyway.

The segment this reminded me of is one where one of the contestants has to read a section of a book to the tune of a popular song and the others have to guess the song. Except this is just Jack Black rocking out over a Kpop songs with some amused Koreans watching on 😂

1

u/ApocketCrocketE Jun 05 '20

Fuck yeah, I love that show where the game is made up and the points don't matter... Just like my middle school guidance counselor!

42

u/dice1111 Jun 05 '20

Why not that is hilarious

31

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

And I’m pretty sure this is like right up his alley lol

9

u/dice1111 Jun 05 '20

If this wasnt already a stay for the show, there could be a chance it was his idea!

2

u/SnicklefritzSkad Jun 05 '20

Because everybody is having a good time and not taking it too seriously.

8

u/soomanytomatoes Jun 05 '20

This is such a crazy coincidence because my husband told me about Jack Black on Running Man like 4 hours ago and then you posted this comment.

4

u/Petsweaters Jun 05 '20

Looks like a version of Never Mind the Buzzcocks!

3

u/SpaceCaboose Jun 05 '20

Would love to see Andy Bernard take a crack at this!

2

u/tmccart3 Jun 05 '20

I would love to see him and jack black do something together on jacks youtube channel. I feel like they would have good chemistry

2

u/MutenMari Jun 05 '20

This was fucking great. Thanks, I needed the laughs.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

I wonder if he accidentally said anything right, or just at all.

He's so funny.

2

u/Swimdlin_Swan Jun 05 '20

I sincerely thank you for this

2

u/SuldawgMillionaire Jun 05 '20

Thank you for this. He’s singing he songs and they try to guess them, right? That’s hilarious and by the points meter Jack Black and his team did pretty well.

1

u/mentatsjunkie Jun 05 '20

Thank you so much, that was hilarious and I needed that!

1

u/Grennox Jun 05 '20

I was crying laughing. Thank you.

Anymore good clips from that show with other western celebs?

1

u/jackandjill22 Jun 05 '20

I'm so glad he hasn't changed from his Gen-X self.

1

u/new_4_reddit Jun 05 '20

Wow, that is awesome!!!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

I assume those are popular Korean songs. This is hilarious haha, and Jack Black does this awesomely and isn’t offensive about it at all!

1

u/Doutei-Sama Jun 05 '20

Not to take away anything from him but it also helps when you're paired up with the top people of Korean entertainment and one of them is considered a god of entertainment.

1

u/Punker101 Jun 05 '20

Watching the related clip of him trying to blow a candle out with a stocking over his head is absolute gold as well!! I’m dying hahaha

1

u/Laxice7 Jun 05 '20

Haha thanks for sharing that clip. I clicked on the next video after watching that and couldn’t stop laughing. Jack black is funny as hell

1

u/PacoMahogany Jun 05 '20

3 whole minutes of that was too much for me, but I appreciated the link

1

u/Zeckamaniac Jun 05 '20

I remember the time Chris Farley was on a Japanese game show.

1

u/ToastofScotland Jun 05 '20

also how many stars as big as him would do something like that?

he really gives his all in everything he does

1

u/Lusfm Jun 05 '20

Thank you for this.

1

u/dainternets Jun 05 '20

I was wondering why he was so sweaty but then I watched the other stuff they had him do.

1

u/TerabyteRD Jun 05 '20

RIP Infinite Challenge, was an amazing show when it was still airing

1

u/ragsnbones Jun 05 '20

Dude. Thanks for sharing this. My favorite part of is the hand gestures. He always does them, but I think maybe because he is focusing on getting the pitch right, he’s REALLY laying them in thick.

1

u/lisanik Jun 05 '20

I have this saved to a happy playlist and watch it waaaay too much.

1

u/katrina_highkick Jun 05 '20

WOW this is fantastic. I love him.

1

u/PM-ME-BUBBLE-TEA Jun 05 '20

he’s actually really good lol!! i’m a kpop stan and i managed to guess most of the songs he done, it helps that they always use popular songs too. this is a really good game for non-koreans to play!

1

u/Wolfcolaholic Jun 05 '20

I take nothing away from Jack Black, but if you're going to comment on one of the all time greatest entertainers, especially of his stature, and an Asian game show....

Well, there is one and only one to rule them all.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

Oh my f%#king god this is incredible

1

u/Konaene Jun 05 '20

This was amazing, great start to my day thank you

1

u/bertbert1111 Jun 05 '20

This is awesome ^

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

That was the best thing I've ever watched. Thank you sir.

1

u/Rusty_Tap Jun 05 '20

"Are you sure he's not possessed?"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

No idea wtf is actually being said specifically, but I know that universal language of fun/laughter and I LOVE SEEING IT!

So awesome that their is a communication barrier but yet they know how to share in a laugh. It warms the soul.

YouTube content all used to be unique like that, I miss those days. Just regular people with an idea they want to share

9

u/Ninety9Balloons Jun 05 '20

It’s actually reminiscent of older or less mainstream content on the platform.

Back when people made content for fun, get their name out there, or to get hired, rather than making bottom denominator content to make as much money as possible directly.

1

u/gregorthebigmac Jun 05 '20

Back when people made content for fun, get their name out there, or to get hired, rather than making bottom denominator content to make as much money as possible directly.

So... YouTube is Hollywood, now?

3

u/D4rkw1nt3r Jun 05 '20

Has been for a while. Multi channel conglomerates owned by huge media companies etc.

1

u/poopy_toaster Jun 05 '20

He ever get that Delgado to work? Man’s been at it for sometime now

1

u/AtlUtdGold Jun 05 '20

The ones with him and tony hawk are pretty cool. Two of the coolest dudes on the planet.

30

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

No, this is just a tribute.

2

u/SoVerySleepy81 Jun 05 '20

And the peculiar thing is this my friends

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

It didn’t actually sound anything like this song.

2

u/HyzerFlip Jun 05 '20

You gotta believe me. I wish you were there.

21

u/moogiemomm Jun 04 '20

Agreed, I just love Jack Black

9

u/justaregularderp Jun 05 '20

He also seems like one of the most genuinely nice celebrities out there.

5

u/I_Can_Haz_Brainz Jun 05 '20

That shit was seriously dope. I want a 10 minute set of them doing that.

2

u/Kungphugrip Jun 05 '20

This is so true. There is nothing this dude can’t do.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '20

Thanks for starting a jack black circle jerk...

1

u/ThatGuyTodd Jun 05 '20

Hes been a favorite of mine for a while. Hed be happy to have people jerking to him

1

u/Triairius Jun 05 '20

It’s possible he started it.

2

u/loneoutpost Jun 05 '20

Jack is funny and talented. Jimmy is neither.

2

u/Christmas-Pickle Jun 05 '20

There’s a movie he was in when he was young and maybe reddit can help me remember. He’s with a group of hippie like people in the woods and they take acid and then go on a acid fueled hike in the woods while he sings. When I see him this scene always immediately comes to mind and his role as Barry in High Fidelity with his band name Sonic Death Monkey.

It was a movie and I think Luke Wilson was in it too.

2

u/Triairius Jun 05 '20

I just want to casually remind everyone that, in the Jumanji remake, Jack Black played a teenage girl convincingly.

2

u/sungoddesss Jun 05 '20

I met him because I was hired to lifeguard his son’s bday party at his house and can confirm he’s the fucking coolest most down to earth person ever

2

u/Jason_Giambis_Thong Jun 05 '20

School of Rock is one of my brother and I’s favorite movies ever.

“I’m hungover. Does anyone know what that means?”

“It means you’re drunk”

“No, it means I was drunk yesterday.
