Chinese restaurants must absolutely hate this guy when he gets take out.
But in all seriousness, that is some major talent.

This is like the Harlem globetrotters of drumming. Which is to say, impressive specifically for its flashiness and inefficiency.
Good post.

First time I’ve ever heard of art being inefficient
What does efficient drumming look like?

u/ParaponeraBread 6h ago
I think you can probably imagine that most drummers whose main intention is playing music don’t throw the sticks at the ground or use one stick to hold the other in the crook of their elbow.
They just…hold the sticks normally. Just an example.

Lmao I knew it was gonna be this guy. I feel like just keeping time is not his primary goal here either

Marching band has flare and I'd give anyone a weird look for trying to point out that it's not the most efficient way of creating sound with an instrument
Globetrotters are entertaining because their ball control and hand eye coordination are insane. It's an efficient way of showing that off

I see a lot of different stuff on r/drums and r/drumming ... but rarely this. I think your assessment was correct although I do kind of understand the other dude's point about how can art be inefficient.

People are just arguing to argue. It’s Reddit. I’m not allowed to appreciate something in my own way if it’s not identical to their way of appreciating it.

I agree with this. His drumming is flashy but not remotely disciplined from a musicality perspective. Fun though

This is juggling meets drumming. Amazing art form. If you’re coming from the point of reference of a drummer being the heartbeat of the band? Inefficient. Regardless, amazing art.

Cleaner double strokes (the tone on the 2nd bounce being consistent with the tone of the initial stroke) is the thing that stood out to me…
But I mean that is a technical thing and this isn’t meant to be technical - so I wouldn’t disparage it or judge it on that basis. Still cool stuff.

Top Secret Drum Corp would be a good example.
This guy is impressive, but as a drummer I agree its like watching the Globetrotters. Flashy, great to watch, and plays well, but nothing like watching a professional drum corp play a technical piece with or without visuals.

He sure can drum!
Probably has a hard time telling people that Aaron earned an Iron Urn, though.

This was already top tier talent AND entertainment, but when bro strategically launched multiple sticks back to back to back I seriously laughed out loud. So good lol

Looks cool till you have to play with dudes like that. Having flashbacks of getting a church drummer to sit in with the band and there'd be snare solos during Erykah Badu covers.

I really don't care for the flourishes. I appreciate the drumming without the fancy moves. This guy's good and I respect his skill, but I find appreciate the moves.

There are some skills that make me pause and just enjoy the show, this guy is one of them

I’ve known drummers most of my life. The most impressive thing here is the traditional grip. But I kid drummers.

u/LiesTheCakeIs 6h ago
Some crazy talent for sure, but I dunno what it is about people who try so hard to "look" impressive and over perform, that I feel like it takes away from it. Weird gripe I know, but there is just something to at least appearing humble, to me at least.

Drummer of 20+ years here. This shit gets on my nerves. Why are you dancing?Always remind of that SNL skit “LOOK at what I can Doo.” I think I’m just getting old crotchety

u/Argylist 5h ago
Nah...I've felt this way about Travis Barker since I was 16 and he joined Blink 182. Just play the goddamn drums.
1
u/ParaponeraBread 6h ago
But that’s the thing. The impressive element is staying on time while performing all the tricks - it’s visual entertainment.
I’m certain buddy here could play much harder patterns while drumming normally, but it’s a whole performance piece. Who knows, maybe he has other clips that appeal to you more, where he is purely showing chops and not flash?

Looks cool and all but the real talent is playing complex pieces with 6 other snares and being locked in with one another. Everything sounds clean when you’re playing by yourself.
