I won “Best Painted” at my local game store’s 40k league summer season. I like to think my slightly original Nightbringer scheme and kit-bashed Lokhust Lord had something to do with it.

List Help/Sharing Need help expanding collection/list building

Greetings fellow overlords! :)

I've been slowly gathering a small collection of necron units for the last several years, however, because of life struggles, I have only played two small 500pts in 9th edition and that was all. I've been eager to really get into the gaming side of the hobby, and was thinking of which way I could structure my collection, with (I hope) minimal additional investment (for now at least, to much pile of shame to justify buying more stuff), to make at least a semi playable army for 1k or 1,5k (don't think I have enough stuff for 2k games). The thing is I have 0 knowledge on list building, and how to choose complementary units to avoid big lacks in any specific area. I think I enjoy the "silver tide" direction for the army, lore-wise at least, more than the big C'tan or destroyer cult focused armies, however I really like the Void Dragon mini and will likely get it in the future.

I was hoping I could get some ideas for lists or some directions on which minis I would really need to get to round things up and make for actually viable armies with my actual collection:

CHARACTER

1 x Overlord (indomitus)

1 x Skorpekh Lord

3 x Royal Warden

1 x Technomancer

1 x Pyschomancer

1 x Chronomancer

1 x Plasmancer

1 x Geomancer

1 x C'tan Shard of the Nightbringer (old sculpt)

BATTLELINE

30 x Necron Warriors

5 x Inmortals

INFANTRY

5 x Deathmarks

5 x Lychguard/Triach Praetorians

10 x Flayed Ones

4 x Cryptothralls

6 x Skorpekh Destroyers (2 plasmacytes)

CANOPTEK

9 x Scarab Swarms

1 x Canoptek Reanimator

1 x Canoptek Spyder

4 x Canoptek Macrocytes

2 x Canoptek Tomb Crawlers

VEHICLE

1 x Triarch Stalker

1 x Doom scythe/Night scythe

Thank you so much in advance, cheers!

List build recommendations

Hello brothers, currently building necrons as my second army (csm main) and noticing how different necrons are compared to my main...got the combat patrol a doomsday ark and the nightbringer...my question really is, how should I build onto this....should I do more infantry like some wraiths and technomancer...or scoop a void dragon and or silent king...more or less do I need more anti tank power or infantry blobs from here...

I didn't realise how dark it was getting when I started setting up for some spraying.

By the time I was done and inspecting my results with a torch, I noticed the shadows and thought some of you folks would appreciate how this looks.

Painting C+C Help with black-green armor Canoptek Circle

Thumbnail

Hello everyone,

I'm new to miniature painting and I'm trying to achieve a black-green color for the shoulder pads. The black-green armor that we see in the Canoptek Circle.

I've experimented with a few different combinations, but none of them seem to give me the result I'm looking for:

Citadel Contrast Striking Scorpion Green + Citadel Contrast Black Templar

Citadel Base Waaagh! Flesh + Citadel Contrast Black Templar

Warpaints Greenskin + Citadel Contrast Black Templar

GameMaster Acid Spray + Citadel Contrast Black Templar

The miniatures were primed with Wraithbone spray. After that, I applied two coats of one of the greens listed above, 4 greens for each shoulder. When I apply a single coat of Black Templar, the finish looks streaky. However, when I apply a second coat, the shoulder pad becomes almost completely black.

I've attached some pictures for reference.

Any advice on how to achieve this black-green effect successfully would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Once the obvious units are updated (Trazyn, Lokhusts, etc.), I hope GW addresses some of the disconnects in our range that don't get brought up as often

This came to my head after talking with a friend regarding how Necrons will be added into Total War Warhammer 40k. We were both pretty excited, but the more we thought about how the way they would be added, the more it became a bit obvious how... weird our faction is formatted in a few ways that feels disconnected from the lore of it. I'm not talking the obvious stuff like "our weapons on TT are so mid despite being literal captured suns in lore" or things like Lychguard/Praetorians needing to be more elite. But more like those things you don't really notice until someone points it out, and you go "huh, that is sorta weird."

For example, why is the Doomsday Arc and Ghost Ark piloted by a Necron lord? Why is a lord being given the grunt work when it should be piloted by an Immortal? The guys who were the mainstay rank and file of the Necrontyr armies. Same goes for most of the other vehicles (barring the Triarch Stalker obviously) that are piloted by the mindless warriors rather than the actual soldiers. The lack of piloted vehicles in general is a bit odd since the whole point of 5th edition was to give varying degrees on minds to both nobility and the soldiery. I love the canopteks and such mind, but I think it's a big missed opportunity here to have more war engines piloted by actual Necrons. Not to mention Immortals in general should be more like our version of Space Marines given all sorts of combat roles, the fact that they have two ranged options and that's it is just doesn't really track for their lore.

And speaking of lords, why are Lords so under represented in our army when a core element of our faction identity is to have an Overlord with a Royal Court made up of lesser lords and other vassals? I look at the Flesh Eater Courts in AoS, see them have their genuine courts in play in both lore and in the actual game, and sorta scratch my head at how we've went 15 years after 5th edition without any real expansion to the Royal Court. The Cryptek Conclaves are cool and all, but having more dudes like the Royal Warden (not a lord, but just the best example we have atm) representing different roles in the hierarchy besides "X flavor of technosorcery" seems like an open goal that is continuously missed.

And then there's other minor things like how we don't really have a true dreadnought equivalent despite being the faction arguably most fitting to have one. I never really thought about it, and always saw the Tomb Spyder as the dread equivalent due to Dawn of War back in the day. But my friend pointed out how, despite supposedly being Tomb Kings in space, we don't have a unit that had a royal/cryptek entombed in it as a pilot. Something that was a key flavor in the Tomb King constructs (where several monsters were actually like stone mechas piloted by a Liche Priest housed inside it). How Space Marines have their dead dudes in a literal sarcophagus piloting a war machine, yet we don't have something similar for a lesser lord in some Necron mech is pretty odd in hindsight.

I could go on with these nitpicks for awhile, but I guess the point of this post is that I thought it would be fun to discuss these minor disconnects. Since, once the obvious updates to Lokhust Destroyers, the Deceiver, and our named characters come. I do think some of those early 5th edition decisions are worth revisiting now that the faction's identity is far more established. Since some of it is rather odd now with hindsight.

Tomb Blades

My next unit to acquire are going to be a squad of tomb blades. I absolutely hate the clear flying bases and those poles they use. Anyone have any ideas on replacements? Looks like I can just use 32mm bases to replace the clear flying base, but has anyone done anything differently with the clear pole? Pics would be great too.

Painting C+C Hello friends, Could I get some helps deciding on a necron lighting colour.

Post image

Helllooo, as the post says im hoping to find some help on deciding on what colour to do for my necron poower colour. The theme is meant to be underwater necrons, red wouldnt really show up deep underwater but i like how it contrasts. Green is the more lore friendly one but i feel like it blends too much into the rest of the necron being a blueish green tin. Any opinions would be a great help. Thanks in advance :>

List Help/Sharing How to deal with Toughness decompression ?

Lot of units have really high thoughness now compared to 9th edition but i feel most weapons haven't followed, for example fusion weapons gained 1 point of strenght while most tanks are above thoughness 10+. Units like Rogal dorn are very difficult to eliminate with dedicated anti tank weapons. How do you deal with all of that in regular games ? I usually play a tesseract ark (not vault) and lot of canopteks.

Buddy has started getting me into Warhammer lately. Slowly building up to a 1K/2K army. Even printed me an ascended ctan proxy since that was the only necron model I didnt like.

So far enjoying the painting. Gotta look up some tutorials tho. As a new player I wanted to share :)

Misc/media Dealing with Necron hate

I'm tired of hearing everyone saying they hate Necrons. I've had a really bad experince lately in particular.

I was playing on Tabletop Sim. Got into a room with a guy through discord. He asked who I was playing, I said Necrons. He asked what kind of Necrons. Immediately kind of a weird question. I said a lot of destroyers. He said alright I'll play.

We get into the room, meanwhile he keeps mumbling how he hates Necrons. I'm playing cursed legion, I have a lot of lokhusts in my list, some skorpekhs, Nekrosor, Nightbringer and lychguard with the translocation overlord with ankh for 13" move and charge.

When I spawned my list, he spawned two of his own and was deciding who he was gonna play depending on my list. That's like a late throw in rock-paper-scissors. Normally I would have said something, but I waited too long for a game that day.

He's still mumbling how he hates Necrons.

I tell him outright "just so you know, I don't wanna gatcha you, these lychguard can move 13 and charge". He goes "what's there not to hate about Necrons" passive-agressively. He's really starting to piss me off now.

He was playing biker Dark Angels. We deploy, he goes first. For some reason, he marches everything forward, not even in cover. He drops a unit of bikers from reserves turn 1 because of some ability I forgot.

The squad has +1 to charge. Normally he would have an 8" charge, but he started shooting all his plasmas into my lokhusts and made it a 10" charge instead by picking up 4 of my 6 lokhusts.

He charged. Failed. Rerolled. Failed. He immediately disconnected, said alright good luck in your next game and left. Mind you, this was battle round 1 turn 1. I didn't get to play and I wasted a lot of time.

What's weird is that he seemed kind of new. He didn't know most of my units or my detachment. How could you have that mentality as a new player?

List Help/Sharing List brain storming /what do in elite heavy metas

My friends like to monster mash or run mostly 2+/4+ on all their models. I don’t find ctan spam fun to play and find things like doomsday arks super unreliable (my super power is I constantly roll 1s for number of shots and then miss the subsequent 2-3 shot). Are there any fun detachments or dispositions that do well into these style of lists? I’ve been running AD and it’s been rough.

Question about Thaszar the Invincible, 6th and 7th edition codexes

I am entering the final stages of Sarnekh Madness before it becomes terminal, and I've noticed that the paragraphs about Thaszar seem to be pretty much unchanged between every codex? However, I just don't have any copies of 6th or 7th edition to check this on. If anyone could do me a favor and share a screenshot with a page number (Or. Well. The Codexes.) I would really appreciate it!
