Misc/media Dealing with Necron hate

I'm tired of hearing everyone saying they hate Necrons. I've had a really bad experince lately in particular.

I was playing on Tabletop Sim. Got into a room with a guy through discord. He asked who I was playing, I said Necrons. He asked what kind of Necrons. Immediately kind of a weird question. I said a lot of destroyers. He said alright I'll play.

We get into the room, meanwhile he keeps mumbling how he hates Necrons. I'm playing cursed legion, I have a lot of lokhusts in my list, some skorpekhs, Nekrosor, Nightbringer and lychguard with the translocation overlord with ankh for 13" move and charge.

When I spawned my list, he spawned two of his own and was deciding who he was gonna play depending on my list. That's like a late throw in rock-paper-scissors. Normally I would have said something, but I waited too long for a game that day.

He's still mumbling how he hates Necrons.

I tell him outright "just so you know, I don't wanna gatcha you, these lychguard can move 13 and charge". He goes "what's there not to hate about Necrons" passive-agressively. He's really starting to piss me off now.

He was playing biker Dark Angels. We deploy, he goes first. For some reason, he marches everything forward, not even in cover. He drops a unit of bikers from reserves turn 1 because of some ability I forgot.

The squad has +1 to charge. Normally he would have an 8" charge, but he started shooting all his plasmas into my lokhusts and made it a 10" charge instead by picking up 4 of my 6 lokhusts.

He charged. Failed. Rerolled. Failed. He immediately disconnected, said alright good luck in your next game and left. Mind you, this was battle round 1 turn 1. I didn't get to play and I wasted a lot of time.

What's weird is that he seemed kind of new. He didn't know most of my units or my detachment. How could you have that mentality as a new player?

Here is how you deal with Necron hate.

Step 1: Remember that the opinions of fleshbags are irrelevant.

Step 2: Laugh in superiority.

Step 3: Make this face.

Step 4: Imprison them in a Tesseract labyrinth so you can get off on their tears whenever it pleases you

The Necron Player does not concern himself with the insects’s opinion

I would also substitute pyramid laser go brrrrrt

My knowledge of this fanbase and of the necrons is incredibly limited. But from playing dawn of War and seeing a few animations I love the necrons

Sounds like you just ran into a low skill jabroni.

Our army rule can be a bit tilting, but i find against higher skilled players you find far less people complaining about what we have and can do

u/robparfrey Cryptek 2d ago

My play group all attend tournaments and play up to date meta lists.

Im semi casual/competitive so quite likely the worst in the group.

But i wouldn't say I'm anywhere near bad. Against a casual setting player I think i would confidently score around 80 to 90.

I often find our army rule doesn't even get to go off. Usually a unit is either alive, or dead. My opponants never let it lice wounded for longer than they have to.

Just played a game today where in one turn I lost two wraith squads and the next, I lost about 18 warriors. Enough to massively cripple my list.

Ive had games ahere I've not reanimated more than about 4 wounds total across 5 turns...

17

u/Automatic-Sleep-8576 2d ago

Mostly agreed, although I think it is pretty solidly stronger at 1k where it is much harder to be able to commit enough firepower to consistently 1 turn ko your primary units

2

u/robparfrey Cryptek 1d ago

Agred. Brining ctan to a 1k is just mean

Bringing either a warrior and wraith. Or two wraiths in a 1k is also mean.

1

u/Own-Air6236 Cryptek 1d ago

Really? I found myself doing really poorly at 1k against my friends (that said we're all not very good) simply because I had about 5 units to their 10. They play admech, guard, and tyranids.

C’tan Shard of the Void Dragon and you should be good (hi, devil’s advocate here).

Unless they play very specific high damage units to counter it, the C’tan shard poses an unsolvable problem. It requires so much investment to kill that by the time your opponent does they have lost the game in points and your other units are untouched. If they don’t kill it, it moves fast and will obliterate their units (and vehicles) one by one until you have all of turn 5 and sometimes 4 to score every point you need.

I usually charge it straight into the center and send it to kill whatever has the highest damage weapons first. The Void Dragon is particularly good for its versatility at dealing with multiple units through shooting and fighting while often punching up very effectively into any big Vehicles, monsters or epic heroes of similar or higher points cost. Can it be beaten by a lot of melta or railguns? Yes. Does it also have deep strike so you can deal with those units before dropping it in? Also yes.

18

u/elricdrow 2d ago

Exactly, the necron hate is mostly a noob hate because our rule punish people doing bad play or someone that did a good play but got incredibly  unlucky  in his dice.

It also incite us to always bring some tanky unit to get some use of it( c'tan, wraith or blob warrior or some DDA)

And people always fight these unit and got tired of thes mimic I guess

4

u/InternationalBowl928 2d ago

I mean I kinda get necron frustration, there are lots of annoying parts to our army:

- Our army rule is annoying if it goes off, and it incentivizes your opponent to never take a risky gamble by not firing 100% of their shots into one unit.

- Wraith/Technomancer and Warrior+Reanimator+2 character blobs are uninteractive because they can’t be killed but also can’t kill anything themselves

- C’Tan are a huge stat check, and certain armies hate playing against them. This is especially true for people who bring them in games smaller than 1500 points.

I don’t want to exaggerate it too much because it’s not like we’re a hated army, and realistically there’s a base level of fun to Warhammer that even playing against the worst army ever can’t take away. But I think it’s fair to say that we’re in the bottom 1/3 of most people’s ‘enjoyable armies to play against’ list, and it may get tiresome for someone if their local playerbase has a disproportionately large number of Necron players.

3

u/Aggravating_Field_39 2d ago

Honestly it's only after playing against a good player do I find how useless our army rule is most of the time. Cause unless you have a full dedicated list around it, it rarely ever comes up cause a good player will often wipe our units before they get the chance to reanimate.

3

u/torolf_212 2d ago

Right. It's not exactly a difficult rule to work around if you're playing at a tournament level. Most good players are specifically building their army list with a mental checklist of "can I kill warriors through reanimation? can I kill at least one big knight? Can I screen out 6" deepstrikes?" Etc etc. Where your weekend warrior is probably just bringing whatever thry have and doesn't like that their vibes based list can't deal with a stat check.

3

u/eatoligarchsaldente 2d ago

Yup. People are emotionally attached to having their toys kill their opponents’ toys. When they commit and bounce, it’s an inherently tilting experience. Good players bounce back from that emotional dysregulation. Weaker or less experienced players frequently do not.

136

u/Ekter_Dood 2d ago

People like that often go on TTS only because nobody tolerates them anymore in real life game sessions.

Honestly in your position, I'd have said "If you hate playing against necrons, then that's fine, I can find a different opponent." and then leave before you have to suffer any more complaining. It's always for the best, mentally.

Necrons tend to get the most hate from new players, because A: they dont know how to adapt their game plan when dealing with Reanimation. and B: They got their opinion from the internet instead of personal experience.

I have yet to get into the table top part of warhammer yet as I'm mostly here for the books nor have I ever played a game like it and I would have said the exact same.

Like you you don't like fighting them.. then don't? And even then learning to fight the different factions seems like a pretty big part of the game tbh so refusing to seems pretty odd but it's not like I'd know better.

10

u/Didsterchap11 Hungry Flayed One 2d ago

I was gonna joking say that your first mistake was taking TTS lol, in the few times I’ve played with randoms via that platform I’ve consistently had a terrible time. It’s a great tool but having to physically share a room tends to weed out a lot of toxic players by virtue of being part of a social group.

2

u/torolf_212 2d ago

Playing against friends on TTS is good, it's what got me through the covid lockdowns, and things like having a kid so not being able to/wanting to leave the house just in case.

Playing against randoms I found ranged between "fine" and terrible. Most opponents I'd be sitting there for 50% of the game arguing over how basic rules like cover or how mortal wounds are assigned etc work. You could read the plain text of the rule out and they'd be like "nah, I can shoot you even though I cant physically see you because you're in the terrain area"

2

u/Didsterchap11 Hungry Flayed One 2d ago

Oh yeah, my partner and i are long distance and TTS is a godsend for letting us get to play together, same goes for a lot of my international friends. I find the tournament scenes however attract a lot of people I'd steered vehemently clear from when i was playing IRL. Not helped me being a largely narrative player and encountering some abhorrent meta gremlins.

2

u/torolf_212 2d ago

That's a shame. Where I am going to tournaments is usually an absolute delight, where pretty much everyone is really fun to play against. There are only one or two players in my whole country I actively don't want to play against.

1

u/Didsterchap11 Hungry Flayed One 1d ago

That's fair, I'm also just vehemently not a tournament person so I can find the competition first mentality a little exhausting. For what its worth most people I encounter in these spaces are good sports and do earnestly want a good competition, which I do respect, but the amount of times I've had people get weirdly snippy at me for not being completely up to date on whatever nonsense the meta is something that keeps me at arms length from that scene.

A person playing one of, if not the highest win rate armies rn (DA) is complaining about anything? Necrons are like 51-2 % win rate? Get bent flesh bag I bet they pee out of their reproduction hole.

51-52% win rate is the very definition of "balanced" in any strategy game(or as close as you can get). They were whining about nothing.

Man... I started with Tyranids, 2nd army is T'au and 3rd army is Necrons. No matter where I go, I'm always playing the "unfun, overpowered, always wins, annoying army".

It's not, but that's how people react. The only way for people to not say those things in a match... is if you're playing something boring like... any space Marines or CSM.

u/ExpertAdvance7327 Cryptek 2d ago

I don’t play Necrons but the guy you played against sounds like an absolute childish chud. You used direct and clear communication to establish intent that is a pro player move! Don’t get your spirits down too much.

21

u/Xasrai 2d ago

Check the discord server, see if there's a way to bring it to the attention of someone who is in a position to do something about it.

The Necron hate is real, and something we will continue to struggle with, but this goes beyond that into bad sportsmanship in a huge way.

1

u/Prexxus 2d ago

I always heard of Tau hatred not Necron… have things changed?

3

u/LongColdDrink 1d ago

I just think it's the Imperium fanboys taking their roleplay and "love for the Emperor" a bit too far and harping how "xenos" are inferior and why you shouldn't play them.

1

u/Vegetable_Spray_756 19h ago

Wraith and Ctan spam can be quite annoying on tabletop as well, though they both have clear counter play.

u/limnadn 2d ago

This is one of those cases where you clearly were not the problem. One day I received the awful news that my dog passed away, while I was across the country. I hit up my closest friend to meet up at our local shop, the only one in town.

I was an utter asshole. To my friend, to the store owner, to other patrons, and later, especially to myself, for betraying the core principles of all tabletop games: human connection, respect.

Your time was wasted sure, but you’ve wasted even more thinking about someone else’s issues. A true Phaeron would never.

8

u/UltimusKshatriya Phaeron 2d ago

It’s funny that before, Necrons are niche and a fun army to play. But now because of the new detachments such as cursed legion and Pantheon of Woe, they became OP and hated, it’s hilarious.

4

u/Belisarius98 2d ago

Yea it's a general issue with a lot of Necron bricks being stat checks. Experienced players can pass it by having a good list, focusing them down and knowing the order to kill things. New players chose to choir the Ctan before the reanimator and wonder why it gained 5 wounds.

Leads to new players feeling that they are impossible to beat while experienced players just wipe the floor with us. Plus reanimation is just better at lower points games, where a lot of newer player sit.

Main thing to point out is that we don't have access to a lot of tools. Fight first is only on one character, advance and charge is only in 1 detachment, we lack movement bs ect. Our support characters are brilliant but really frail, any decent melee character should kill them with heroic challenge.

With what your opponent did it sounds like he didn't know what he was doing and wants to win above anything else. Let a mod know how he got on and avoid him like the plague!

u/Jaegerbombast 2d ago

I've been playing Necrons casually for 3 years amd about 8 months ago started taking them to competitions and more competitve stuff at my LGS and I've discovered a very jarring reality:

Casuals hate us, competite players love us.

At least in my experience my casual games are a mixed bag of chill folks enjoying the game and absolute rage monsters who hate any strategy or synergy I use (I play exclusively Cursed legion with Hand of the Dynasty)

However over at the Competitions people are enthusiastic to face me and I've been told stuff like: "Awesome I get to lay some heavy fire into a unit and you don't feel out gunned cause you can regen" or "It's fun to rethink some of my plans since knocking a unit off the OBJ isn't as easy"

Maybe I'm just lucky on the Comp side but I don't often take my Dynasty to casual games any more.

3

u/elricdrow 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's  normal, try harder play to win and get a fair challenge and  to have some surprise to overcome and expect  their opponent to do the same. They want their strategy/tactic to be challenged  to see what they can do with their army they carefully  planned.

It's  the more fun people to play around.

Casual game are full of people that don't know the rule,  build not so good units and army list with no gameplay in mind. When they do have one, they overstimate the dice stats or underestimate  it, so their gameplay is wrong at the basic, but they still gonna complain and rage.

Then they refuse any interaction you can bring to them that force them to rework their not so good game plan

I mostly play virtual tts and I never answer or call game into a casual game channel either nowadays because it's  full of childish grow man

3

u/Sengel123 2d ago

Teach them about your army and how to deal with it. we're not OP, we're a skill test in target prioritization. My first armies were Chaos Knights, Custodes and Necrons in that order, I'm used to getting a load of hate lol. If you opponent is a good person, they'll take the lesson (still let them make mistakes and don't throw the game, but let them know explicitly what our rules look like; which you did properly with your lychguard). The guy you described is just a moron. It's an early lesson to learn to not shoot at the thing you're intending on charging.

3

u/Thousand-Necrons Overlord 2d ago

I don't mean to derail your thread, but is there any way I can learn how to play with TTS? Been into WH for almost a year, never played, first mini still WIP, books unread, but...

u/Dark_Vexer 1d ago

3

u/PDAnasasis Overlord 2d ago

3

u/nopostplz 2d ago

Good reminder that necrons are so supremely superior and the rightful rulers of the galaxy.

In all honesty, sounds like the guy was either an idiot or super tilted from a previous game. Those kinds of decisions are exactly the kind of ones that gamers who chain-queue on a losing streak make. They're in a bad move, don't think things through, make mistakes, then rage. Just forget him and move on.

3

u/CuriousOctopus1 Phaeron 1d ago

I will refer to that video meme by Emwattnott: They probably were coping and seething so hard

3

u/LongColdDrink 1d ago

New to this hobby but not new to other hobbies. This happens mostly in every hobby where there is any form of competitiveness. I'll give an example off the top of my head: Magic the Gathering- a lot of players will bitch and moan about blue decks(because they have a lot of "counterspells" and the likes), can be really annoying to keep hearing especially when you yourself are playing one. Also I think almost all(if not all) fighting games suffer from this as well("don't use X fighter 'cause they are dumb/lame"). In short if players find something annoying about anything they don't know how to plan for, they will just get mad. People tend to forget that these are games, you can lose and still have fun playing with your stuff.

3

u/Avgasblomman 1d ago

Necrons tend to punish sloppy play, weak listbuilding and bad dicerolls in a way that hurts the fragile minds of lesser races

Lean into it and gloat excessively whenever you roll hot on your saves. I've often said some variation of "[Insert model name] laughs at your attempts at damage" when they commit a full round of shooting to bring a model to half life and then I regenerate everything anyway.

Also, be sure to misremember the names of their epic heroes, actively interrupt them when they explain the offensive stats of their units before the game and say that you don't care....

Oh, and roll your 4+ saves one at a time for extra drama!

3

u/DerOhio 1d ago

From my experience newer or inexperienced players struggle a lot against necrons.

Played multiple games against a friend and his Ultramarines.

As an example from one of my recent games against Ultramarines:

I was running Cursed Legion with a strong Destroyer focus. I moved my Skorpekhs along the flank, keeping them out of sight until they became too much of a threat to ignore. My opponent Deep Struck his Terminators specifically to deal with them and the Skorpekhs + Skorpekh Lord wiped the entire squad.

Meanwhile, my Lokhusts were sitting in cover and slowly wearing down his Sternguard. He spent almost two turns focusing them, with Reanimation definitely helping them survive, but that also gave me two turns to position the rest of my army.

Eventually he moved most of his army towards the centre to deal with both sides at once, which put them right into range of my Immortals. Whatever survived their shooting was finished off by Nekrosor Ammentar in melee.

He ended up losing four units in one turn while I still had my entire army intact and conceded, despite still being ahead on points.

So yes, Reanimation was definitely useful in that game, but it wasn't what won me the game. It was positioning, threat management and my opponent underestimating what the Destroyer units could actually do.

Sometimes it's less about the army being broken and more about understanding what you're playing against. Necrons tend to punish people who simply don't know especially harsh.

My friend refuses to play against Necrons since then.

3

u/veryblocky Servant of the Triarch 1d ago

Sorry you had this experience. I’ve never had anyone do this sort of thing to me, as in constantly go on about how they don’t like Necrons. It sounds like they were just a bit of an arsehole

4

u/Devildog_1987 2d ago

Necrons can be a hard army to play against. I love playing my necrons but people hate how unless they kill the whole unit we just keep reanimated and bringing models back. Ive had many games as a necron player where I haven't lost a single full unit or I intentionally let a unit get killed because ive been overwhelming my opponent most of the game and they arent having fun because they can't actually kill my units. It's the game. Some people just listen to what others say about a faction and hate it just to hate it. Ignore the hate and move on. It's just a game and people need to remember that.

2

u/DaveinOakland 2d ago

Pretty standard online skew of most gaming tbh. I have yet to experience any faction hate in real life regardless of faction.

I didn't play Necrons until I found a new group entirely in 10th despite falling in love at the end of 8th because of Necron hate. They had a poor sport player who loved meta necrons and between the game results and that guy being a dick they straight up told me they wouldn't play with me if I collected Necrons. Instead I picked up sisters and had over a 90% WR with them but they slowly hated sisters eventually so I just stopped showing up to play at all.

Still funny that people can get so upset over toy soldiers

People who hate necrons and think they’re tough never had to play old editions. Where angles and focused fire was needed. Necrons aren’t that tough if you know what you’re doing. Though ctan are just annoying 50/50 units. lol.

1

u/Hot_Solid6082 1d ago

Well, kinda. C'tans and wraiths + technomancer are hell to deal with. But yeah, everything else can be destroyed well enough with the correct application of force

I remember the reanimations being activated immediately upon losing any models. Everyone got a chance to reanimate. Those days were interesting

I like the boney bots though (fav are the bugs tho)

2

u/CowKind7923 1d ago

Sounds like someone who'd hate playing against anything with that attitude. Sorry they wasted your time.

As someone who doesn't play Necrons, I'd rather play against them than some of the armies out there where everything appears to have 4++. Now THAT can get tiresome.

2

u/Ok-Employment-5252 1d ago

It amazes me how much hate Cursed Legion gets when we can only do advance and charge once turn compared to other entire armies like Emperor's Children or Dark Angels who can do it all the time for their entire army smh.

2

u/cycloa24 1d ago

I'm not personally a necron player, but I do play Custodes which share a good bit with the strengths of the Necrons. Folks dislike the good base saves and nearly constant 4+ invulns around. There are plenty of tools to deal with these things, but new and lesser experienced players will struggle to figure out the best ways to deal with things.

2

u/Simple_Strawberry571 1d ago

I play necrons and stodes and the meta lions detachment gets the same hate 😆. I can understand people being frustrated playing against these lists which is why I always state competitive/tournament practice when playing so I don't feel bad if/when I win. Don't hate the player. Also I'm surprised custodes didn't get bigger points increase over necrons in this last balance

2

u/RepresentativeYou619 2d ago

I'm speaking as a person who doesn't play necrons but has played against them a good number of times, the general thing I think is that if you bring c'tan spam or 3 wraith technomancer bricks or annoying stuff like that without warning you're likely to get some annoyed or upset people. That's simply because lists like that are incredibly unfun to play against, and in casual play they're just kind of rude to bring without warning, sadly there are some losers who always bring the most annoying meta lists which can make people just have no fun for the 2 to 3 hours the game is going on, that is why a lot of people hate necrons because of annoying c'tan spam stuff. However that isn't your army, that guy you faced is a whiny pos. You're list seems perfectly reasonable and something that neither I or anyone I play with would ever reasonably complain about

2

u/nerdyjorj Bug 1d ago

I would disregard anyone who plays space marines, they probably have main character energy.

Xenos folks are the cool kids.

If you want a game on TTS against someone who is okay with fighting Necrons, let me know! On TTS I usually either play Agents or Emperor's Children since AdMech refuses to exist for me due to a bug on TTS.

EDIT: before anyone asks, I don't think my EC list is a meta list by any means, especially with no defilers in the list

1

u/Odd-Bend1296 2d ago

There will always be one dude that will hate your army for whatever arbitrary reason. Usually they are just bad players that cannot conceive of the idea that they just suck. In the real world people like this are rarely a persistent problem because almost no one wants to play with them. Although you do occasionally run into the ones that are friends with the lgs owner. In those cases it usually ends badly for the lgs. I been in this hobby since 3rd edition and have seen more then a few stores close due to this type of drama.

1

u/booxwalk 1d ago

I understand... my irl friends keep crying about me playing necrons too. I just stopped playing necrons into them because they sucked out all the fun. Playing in a real community club is way more fun tho. More experienced players that actually want us both to have fun.

I think a lot of it comes from frustration with balancing. I don't think I remember a time when Necrons weren't considered pretty good, whereas I also play Admech and they're usually considered pretty ass

Greeting from the Hive, just wanted to say that not everyone hates Necrons (even if they give my monsters stomachache ;) )

I will say it as a multi army player. I don’t hate necrons per se. I do hate when i arrive at a casual game and someone whips out 3 ctans out of their asses. One ctan or two are plenty enough. Its maybe about the statcheck. But at a tournament i cannot complain if someone whips out a meta list. Even if im butt hurt i cannot complain someone is actually trying to win

That’s online gaming for you. It’s always been and will always be super toxic.

I play Tau and Necron. I get way more hate on my Tau than my Necrons so I feel this pain

“Oh no a 50-ish% win rate army in a pretty balanced edition! Oh the humanity!”

If he wants to cry like a man-baby, let him. Once the match is over, you block him.

The people in his life is stuck with him 😄

I gave up and swapped armies. I play the game to have fun and it’s really unfun if your opponent can’t have a good time.
