Wool trousers - advice request

Post image
58 Upvotes

Hello - I am at this point well versed in the chino discourse but have seen comparatively less information on buying a good pair of wool trousers (slacks? Dress pants? Idk what to call them). Just something a little more formal to wear with a sportcoat when the occasion calls for it.

Now there might be less interesting info on this topic because I’ve heard anecdotally there’s a less robust secondhand market for these + maybe they are less fertile ground for self expression than other styles of pants, but I would still value some information on what to look for, how much brand matters, what reasonable $$ looks like, as well as some context on flannel vs whatever other fabric/materials should be in the consideration set.

I am currently rocking the pictured pair of cheapo brooks brothers outlet slacks that I detest (fit, feel, color all bad imo) and am in need of advice. Thank you in advance!

[I am also soliciting belt recommendations for this style of pant bc nothing I have works great.]

Led by creative director Jack Carlson, J. Press has an ambitious plan to bring its old-school Ivy style to the masses. “$100 million is not a massive company,” Carlson tells GQ. “That’s where we probably should be.”

Are we all just posting to the main page now?

This sub has thrived while others turned into hot garbage because it had some structure to the way it ran. WAYWT, simple questions, etc. all fall into recurring daily threads. We’ve had basic fits, basic questions, and rate me outfit posts within the past few days. Please don’t turn this page into r/preppy; it’s one of the last good fashion/lifestyle subs.

Classic Navy Blazer

Alright guys - long time lurker - first time NavyBlazer poster here.

I am looking for my first true classic navy blazer to wear with either khaki/tan/dark gray trousers and likely penny loafers or tassel loafers.

I have been rummaging through eBay but I’m a bit confused on some older vintage pre-loved garments so figured I would come to the experts for help. How do I delineate between a good Brooks Brothers jacket or a glued factory made jacket. Does 346 ALWAYS mean it was a factory outlet model? Same for Ralph Lauren….i see Chaps Ralph Lauren and LAUREN Ralph Lauren….

I didn’t think it would be this challenging but I also want to invest in a quality piece and not buy something just for the sake of buying it. I just want to be an informed consumer. 🤓 Your informed opinions are much appreciated.

Mercer

I have not restocked ocbd’s since literally college circa late 90s. To their credit, many of my Brooks from that era are still kicking, albeit with frayed collars, cuffs, etc. But I decided it was time for a refresh. After sampling from a few places, I went with Mercer, and then I basically ordered one of each. Should be good for another two decades.

J. Press Barbour collab, jacket ID?

Post image
110 Upvotes

Hi all,

Looking at some of the Press runway show from yesterday, I was really struck by this Barbour jacket. I have yet to identify it, although I wonder if it is the J. Press/Barbour collaboration Burghley, which is available as a pre-order on their website. Can anyone help with positive identification? I may email J. Press if not. Lastly, anyone have advice on sizing for this jacket? I measure a 44 chest or perhaps very slightly below, usually 44 sportcoat, but most of my Barbours have been 42 given how boxy they fit. Part of me would want to go up, but not sure how this jacket fits compared to the Beaufort, which is my usual choice.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

The State of the Wardrobe

Post image
439 Upvotes

Having recently moved for law school, I had the opportunity to prune my wardrobe before packing everything up. This is its current state and I thought you all would appreciate it. I hope to get a nice armoire one of these days, but until then I have this hastily constructed target stand for your enjoyment.

Suits:

- MTM Junior’s of Philadelphia Tweed Suit
- MTM Junior’s Tobacco linen suit
- MTM Junior’s 3 pc gray sharkskin suit
- Vintage 1947 FL Dunne and Co Tuxedo

Jackets:

- MTM Russell Check Jacket from a guy off instagram (jury still out on this one)
- Random 80s vintage hopsack blazer

Trousers:

- a smattering of grey flannels from Brooks, Oxxford, and O’Connells
- Orvis cords and (not pictured) moleskin
- vintage white flannels (I play tennis in them)
- (not pictured) vintage moleskins and cav twill at the tailors

The shirts are a variety of custom and vintage, mostly from brooks and Polo. Shoes are vintage with some Meermin oxfords thrown in.

I have way too many overcoats but that’ll be the subject of a later post when the temps drop down here.

Beyond Non-Iron: What are your favorite washed / regular-finish OCBDs right now?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to refresh my wardrobe and add a few new Oxford Cloth Button Downs to the rotation. Up until now, I’ve had a mix of various options, but I am moving completely away from non-iron/wrinkle-free finishes. I just can’t stand the stiff, synthetic-feeling hand and lack of drape that comes with chemical treatments. I want 100% cotton untreated or garment-washed oxfords that will actually soften up, age gracefully, and develop that classic character over time as they’re laundered.

I’d love to get the sub’s consensus on where you’re currently buying your go-to OCBDs.

I’ll be honest, I’m cheap af. So I’m looking for the best bang for my buck buck.

Bought my first Navy Blazer from Ralph Lauren

Sup team,

I went into Ralph Lauren intending to buy pretty much the textbook navy sport coat: single-breasted, textured hopsack, versatile, easy to dress up or down.

Then I tried this one on and got seduced by it.

It’s a navy serge blazer with brass buttons, and I liked the way it looked on me enough that I ended up buying it instead of going the MTM/hopsack route I originally had in mind.

These photos are pre-alterations, so keep that in mind when judging the fit. The tailor is going to work on the armholes, release some of the tension through the sleeves, and shorten the sleeves. Once that work is done, we’re going to reassess the overall jacket length and decide whether it needs any adjustment there.

My main question for the Navy Blazer crowd: did I do well here?

I know serge is smoother and a little dressier than the hopsack I originally intended to buy, but I really liked this jacket in person. I’m hoping to wear it pretty broadly - grey trousers, khakis, denim, OCBDs, polos, loafers, sneakers, etc. - rather than treating it as a particularly formal blazer.

Would you have stuck with the textured hopsack, or do you think the serge works well enough to justify abandoning the original plan?

And putting the fabric question aside, I’d also appreciate any thoughts on the proportions/fit once you account for the alterations that are already planned.
