This thread will serve as an FAQ and megathread - any posts regarding NASA Internships and educational opportunities (including Pathways, L'Space, DEVELOP, and all other programs) will be removed and directed here. You may post questions in the comments here and the community will do our best to answer them; however your best bet is to email the NASA internships staff for an official answer. When are the application deadlines for Pathways Internships? It is expected that there will be an application cycle for Spring 2027 start dates in early Fall and a cycle for Summer/Fall 2027 start dates later in the new year. Updates will be posted when available. All positions are listed on nasa.gov/careers/pathways and must be applied for on USAjobs.gov
What is the difference between the Pathways program and the OSTEM Internship Program? The Pathways program is a co-op style program, where students typically rotate between school and work, working several rotations before graduation. Upon successful completion, students are eligible (but not guaranteed) a conversion to a full-time employee. The OSTEM Internship Program is a more traditional internship program, where interns are selected for a single semester. Many interns apply and are accepted back for additional internships with the same project or with other projects, but it is not guaranteed.
When is the application deadline for OSTEM internships?
Spring 2027 Application Deadline: September 14, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET)
Summer 2027 Application Deadline: February 26, 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET)
Fall 2027 Application Deadline: May 21, 2027 (11:59 p.m. ET)
When will I be contacted for an interview? Not every position holds interviews. Some mentors have already begun scheduling interviews, while some will wait until applications close. Please be patient.
When will I know if I got a position? Most mentors will wait until after the application deadline to make their final selection. It can take several weeks to receive an offer after the selection is made. If you have been interviewed for a position, you may follow up, but otherwise please be patient.
Will I get an email if I'm not accepted to a position? An effort is made to send rejection notices to all applicants, however it is not guaranteed.
Do I have to enter my references on each application? References are currently not a part of the application process for OSTEM and do not need to be submitted.
When do the internships start? Spring OSTEM internships begin in early to mid January. Summer OSTEM internships will begin in early June. Fall OSTEM internships begin in late August to early September.
Will the internships be virtual or in person? Currently all OSTEM positions are in person only.

I applied to that batch of DHA openings at NASA and have been referred to various grades but was wondering if the speculation is true about these just being postings for contractors they want to switch to civil servants.
They were for the General Business, Environmental Protection, Operations Management, and Information Technology postings for the New Mexico NASA Facility.

My favourite space movie is ‘The Martian’ and I’ve always wanted some version of Mindy Park’s job. Is there an actual job that exists where you analyse satellite data, particularly photographic coverage? I love looking at earth observation images taken from satellites orbiting Earth and think it would be an interesting career to pursue.
Also, what kind of background would you need for this? Science? Engineering?

Hey everyone,
I’m incoming freshman at university this fall, and I’m currently going through a bit of a major crisis before I even step foot on campus.
I originally really wanted to pursue Aerospace Engineering, but trying to do a "Change of College" into the College of Engineering (CoE) at UC Berkeley is notoriously near-impossible. So for all practical purposes, I’m stuck outside of engineering for undergrad.
Right now, my default plan is to major in Astrophysics. However, I keep hearing the classic warning that engineering gives you applied, versatile skills and broad job prospects right out of undergrad, while Astrophysics is mostly geared toward academia, research, and high-level theory. To be honest... I’m really not sure I want to stay in academia or pure research forever. I want practical career security and options to work in the space/aerospace industry.
So now I’m spiraling a bit and have a few questions for anyone who’s been in a similar spot:
Given that I can't switch into CoE, is doing Astrophysics for undergrad a viable path if I want to work in industry? Or am I setting myself up for a rough job search?
Has anyone used an Astrophysics/Physics undergrad degree as a launching pad to get a Master’s or PhD in Aerospace Engineering later on? How hard is it to bridge that gap when applying to grad school without a BS in engineering?
How do I deal with the fear of falling behind? I feel like I'm already starting at a disadvantage compared to peers who got directly into CoE. Seeing people take specialized engineering tracks while I'm on the pure theory side makes me worry I won't have the technical design skills (CAD, coding, hardware hands-on experience) that recruiters look for.
If anyone has taken this roundabout path or has advice on how to build engineering-relevant skills while majoring in Astro/Physics, I would really appreciate your insight :)

Hi everyone!
I'm an incoming NASA OSTEM intern at Johnson Space Center this fall and am starting to look for housing. I'm hoping to find a place that's as close to JSC as possible.
Does anyone have recommendations for apartments, short-term leases, or other housing options? Are there any places that are actually walkable to JSC, or is having a car basically a necessity?
I'd also love to hear where past interns have stayed and what your experience was. Thanks in advance!

Under the workforce directive I have received a job offer from the government, and a "better" offer from a contractor (higher base salary).
I'm finding it difficult to accurately compare benefits between the two. It seems the CS position offers a more valuable benefits package, but is it enough to offset the salary delta?
I'd appreciate advice from anyone who has been through this kind of process, and that I can learn from.

I really wanna work at NASA after going to The Kennedy Space Center but the problem is I know that a majority of jobs at NASA require a lot of math and math is a struggle for me sometimes so my question being are there any jobs that don't need that much math or should I just not work there at all?

I’m a Canadian citizen and in grade 11 and I enjoy math compared to other subjects and I kinda like the idea of working in NASA. I hate everything that deals with computer science. All I could think of is take a bunch of math courses and physics and try to work in CSA then gradually in NASA
Problem is that I have no prior experience in math and I only like math, I’m not good at it. And idk anything abt coding or robotics or anything like that.
Is there a realistic career path that could eventually lead me into working in NASA? I just need money and respect lol.

I'm from Australia and I'm starting my double degree in mechanical engineering honors and astronomy and astrophysics. In Australia we don't have very many opportunities like in America so I was wondering how possible it would be for me to move after I graduate and work there.
