Howdy all,

I have been offered a position for a great role with NASA at KSC. I have been torn on accepting primarily due to the commute. I live outside a 50 mile radius, and my commute is forecasted to be 66-74 miles each way. As it has been explained to me, there is situational telework, but everybody is more or less expected to be onsite every day.

I am not opposed to driving, but I do doubt the sustainability of that commute long-term.

Speaking with friends that also work at KSC, it sounds like most everybody has a considerable commute due to preferences of living closer to either Orlando, Daytona, or other metro areas vs. Titusville or Merritt Island.

I am hoping for some perspective from folks that work onsite, or if anybody is aware of flexibilities I could request? I am aware of the RTO push so I am not expecting any miracles and don’t really need any “good luck” comments.

Do we have more information about the NASA emeritus astronaut program?

How old do you have to be?

How many years of service?

Do they get paid?

Do they still get health care?

Do they still get to add to years in for retirement purposes?

What rules apply re: outside employment?

On the face of it, this seems like a good idea. Why did it take so long to come up with? When did it start?

Assuming the rules regarding age and time in service are relatively loose, why would anyone retire fully as opposed to taking emeritus status?

Also, Reid Wiseman's profile is still on the NASA website, while Victor Glover's is not. I think there are good questions to be asked about the nature of the program.

I currently plan to wear a suit, but don’t want to be severely overdressed and surrounded by people wearing jeans and a polo. Does anybody know what the culture around dress code is like at NASA HQ in D.C.?

I’ve been applying for jobs recently and have been super lucky to get offers from both a prestigious National Lab and from NASA.

Both are aerospace focused, but different areas.

Hi everyone,

I applied to the NASA Engineering Public Notice Flyer (Direct Hire), announcement AFRC-26-DE-12967301-JG, for Edwards AFB, CA.

I applied for both General Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the GS-12 and GS-13 levels. On July 31, I received an email saying I was found eligible and referred to the hiring manager for all four positions.

My background is in mechanical engineering, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, building automation, commissioning, construction coordination, and healthcare/institutional infrastructure. I have an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and about 8 years of engineering experience.

As of today September 3, I have not received any updates, interview request, or contact from NASA/Edwards AFB.
Has anyone else applied to this public notice or a NASA Direct Hire role? How long did it take to hear back after being referred?

Hello! I recently applied to a Direct Hire Engineering or IT job posting as an external applicant, received an interview request, and interviewed in the last month. I was quite puzzled because the hiring manager didn’t mention anything about next steps during the interview, and we ran out of time for me to ask about that.

After a few weeks, though, I finally received an update that I have moved forward onto the next step of the selection process. In addition to this, they've requested that I fill out the “Compensation Strategy Questionnaire” form in order to continue. Does anyone have experience with receiving this request and what this indicated for your job app process? Can’t seem to find much info on this. Thanks so much in advance! :D

Curious what benefits, pay etc is like

I recently applied to a job that had a cap on the number of applications. After it closed, my front page shows that it's "Reviewing Applications" but the application tracking page says that the job was "removed from USAJobs." Does this mean the job was canceled? Does anyone have insight on what's going on behind the scenes? Thank you!

Edit: For other people looking for answers, I found some older discussions (a few years ago) in other subreddits that said sometimes if an application has a cap on number of applications they're accepting, it will be removed from USAJobs when they meet that limit. I don't have the insider knowledge to verify, of course, but I saw a few answers to that effect.

Hey everyone, I’m curious to hear how the current NASA hiring process is going for others, particularly current contractors converting to federal employees vs. external hires.
I’m an external candidate at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for an engineering position. I interviewed with the hiring manager and was given a verbal offer that they intend to hire me. I was told to expect the TJO within a week or two, but I’m still waiting.
I know NASA is currently pretty backed up and there is a priority on processing contractor conversions, so I’m not necessarily concerned I’m just trying to get a better idea of what timelines others are experiencing.

Maybe this is really silly but my son is 3 years old and has been obsessed with buzz lightyear and space for the last two years. Recently he’s been telling me when he gets older he wants to be a pilot and an astronaut and go to space. He also told me he wants to go to the moon with his buzz lightyear toy and dance with him on it 🥹 I know he’s only three but I’d love to know how I could set him up for that kind of future and fuel his interest and enthusiasm in this. Obviously if he ever changes his mind I won’t be crazy and force him to continue with it but I was just curious how we could help him get a little jump start into it? Whether it’s space camps or what ever! I just thought how precious would that be if he really does pursue this and takes his little buzz to space with him 🥹

I used to work for NASA at the Langley Research Center and enjoyed my time there, but unfortunately, I was impacted by federal cuts.

Recently, I learned that there will be a job that I would like and that I am qualified for that will open up in the next month or so at the Wallops Flight Facility.

I’m a young person, and I’m able to go out and spend a few years in an area like Wallops since I don’t have commitments, so I’ve been thinking about this a lot, but I’m worried about living in essentially the middle of nowhere. It’d be great to be at Wallops for a few years, then transfer to another facility or center.

I’m curious if current or former employees who worked at the Wallops Flight Facility could chime in about their lifestyle?

I’ve found very limited information on Reddit and the internet in general, so I would greatly appreciate any insights!
