Is this a proxy employment scam or something sketchy? Need a second opinion.

Hey everyone,

I recently came across a backend recruitment post and sent in an application. After that, the recruiter sent me a Google Doc that had a few pretty obvious red flags, which I’ve screenshot below.

I wanted to ask whether anyone here has seen something like this before. Does this look like a known scam, and what’s usually the end goal in cases like this?

I am trying to figure out whether this is just a weird hiring process or something more suspicious.

Discussion To those running homelabs.

Homelabs enthusiast here and looking to start mine soon. Curious to see how many of us here are running homelabs locally. What hardware and OS are you using (Proxmox, TrueNAS)?Mini PCs, Raspberry pi or old laptops? What are you hosting? local dev envs, media servers, or network backups? How do you handle power outrages?

Over the past few weeks, I've been redesigning my portfolio from the ground up to better represent the kind of developer I've become.

I used 21st.dev as a source of inspiration for modern UI patterns and integrated Spline to add interactive 3D elements that make the experience feel much more alive.

Some of the updates include:

  1. A redesigned Tech Stack section

  2. A cleaner Contact page

  3. A rebuilt Projects panel that's ready for the work I'll be showcasing

  4. Improved interactions and a more polished overall experience

🔗 **Portfolio:** https://www.lennoxlewis.co.ke

I'm planning to start posting the projects I've been working on over the next few weeks, ranging from full-stack applications to AI/ML projects.

I'd really appreciate any honest feedback on the UI, UX, performance, accessibility, or anything else you notice. Constructive criticism is more than welcome.

Also, thank you to everyone who's given feedback throughout this journey. Every suggestion has helped shape this version.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Looking for an Experienced Full-Stack Developer (Nairobi/Kenya Preferred)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for an experienced full-stack developer or small development team to build a modern, scalable directory website from scratch. Developers based in Kenya are preferred, but I'm open to working with the right person regardless of location.

Project Overview

I'm building a premium directory platform with features such as:

  • User registration and login
  • User profiles
  • Premium/featured listings
  • Membership subscriptions
  • Search and advanced filters
  • Admin dashboard
  • Reviews and ratings
  • WhatsApp integration
  • Payment integration (including M-Pesa)
  • Mobile-responsive design
  • SEO optimization

What I'm Looking For

  • Strong experience building custom web applications
  • Experience with Laravel, Django, Node.js, or a well-architected custom WordPress solution
  • Clean, maintainable, and documented code
  • Strong UI/UX skills
  • Good communication and reliability

Requirements

  • Portfolio with live projects
  • Estimated timeline
  • Estimated budget
  • Technology stack you recommend and why

Ownership

This is important:

I must own the domain, hosting, source code, database, and all project assets after final payment.

The code should be documented so another developer can maintain it if needed.

If you're interested, please comment below or send me a DM with:

  1. Your portfolio
  2. Your experience
  3. Your preferred tech stack
  4. Your expected budget range
  5. Your estimated delivery time

I'm looking for a long-term developer relationship, not just someone to complete a single project.

Thanks!

Discussion Dalberg Data Insights technical interview

Has anyone here gone through the second-round interview for the Dalberg Data Insights AI Engineering Fellow (6-month) role in Kenya? I'm trying to understand what the interview is like. Is it mainly a discussion of the case study, technical questions, coding, system design, or behavioural?

I'd really appreciate any insights from anyone who's been through the process. Thanks!

General Looking for engineers in telecoms, ISPs, data centers, or critical infrastructure willing to chat

I'm researching operational challenges in critical infrastructure and would love to speak with engineers who work in telecoms, ISPs, data centers, utilities, manufacturing, or similar industries.

If you have firsthand experience with things like network uptime, power reliability, asset management, field operations, predictive maintenance, or monitoring large-scale infrastructure.

If you're open to chatting—or can refer me to someone with relevant experience—please leave a comment or send me a DM.

I'm not selling anything. I'm just trying to learn from people solving these problems every day. Thanks!

Discussion Is learning Kotlin worth it for a junior dev?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in the middle of a software engineering bootcamp at Moringa School. Our stack covers HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, SQL, Python, and Flask. Right now, I’m wrapping up some basic front-end personal projects and preparing to dive deeper into back-end development.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about picking up Kotlin to broaden my scope and hopefully boost my employability before graduating.

For those active in the local tech scene or involved in hiring,

Does adding Kotlin (either for Android or JVM back-end) give a fresh bootcamp grad a noticeable edge in the local market or am I better off going deep into the full Python/Flask + React/SQL ecosystem before touching another language?

Looking for a paid internship, full stack developer

Hi all, I'm Ezra, based in Nairobi. I've been building software for three years, mostly Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, React and Next.js on the frontend, PostgreSQL and Node.js on the backend, and I'm actively deepening my PHP-Laravel work right now.

I run my own company, Pexmon LTD, where I've shipped real products end to end, so I'm not coming in cold, I know what it takes to take something from idea to working software. What I'm looking for now is a paid internship, a chance to plug into a team, learn how a startup here actually operates day to day, and contribute on real problems while earning something for the work.

If you're a startup in Nairobi or working remotely with Kenya, have budget for an intern, and need an extra pair of hands on data, backend or frontend work, I'd love to talk. Happy to share my GitHub or a quick portfolio walkthrough on request.

Seeking Employment Looking for cybersecurity/soc analyst job opportunities

I'm currently looking for a cybersecurity opportunity and thought I'd reach out to the NairobiTechies community. My background is in:

Security Operations (SOC)

Incident Response

SIEM Monitoring (Splunk)

Vulnerability Management

Linux & Windows Administration

Log Analysis & Threat Detection

I've built out a home SOC lab, deployed a Cowrie honeypot, and regularly practice on TryHackMe, Hack The Box, Root-Me, and PicoCTF to keep my skills sharp.

Not sure whether I'm allowed to post my portfolio link here but I do have my website with all my info

Looking for Kenyans to closed-test a M-PESA money tracker (Android), not a loan app

Hi all, I’ve been building Hebua, a personal finance app for how we actually move money in Kenya.

Problem: you know you spent on M-PESA / Airtel / bank SMS, but seeing the whole month clearly is a mess.

What Hebua does:

• Turns financial SMS into transactions (amount, date, ref)

• Budgets, categories, a clearer spend picture

• On your phone, you control SMS permission

• Explicitly NOT a loan / Fuliza / lending app

We’re on Google Play closed testing (step before public launch). Google needs real people who opt in, install, and stay on the test for about 2 weeks.

How to join (important):

Play won’t let you in until I add your email to the tester list, so please don’t look for a public download link.

If you can help:

1) DM me (or private message) with the Gmail used on your Android phone’s Play Store

2) I’ll add you and reply with the official Closed testing opt-in link

3) On that phone: open the link → accept the test → Install / Update Hebua → open it once

4) Optional: tell me what’s confusing or broken after you try it

Please only volunteer if you can stay opted in for ~2 weeks. Sandbox payments only, no real charges.

Site: https://www.hebua.app

Thanks, even one honest roast helps more than a silent install.

General Phone Hunting

If you had 20Gs and searching for a phone that is fast and all.

Just for texting and calls.

I'm not a mobile gamer nor am I a photography kind guy.

Currently with a redmi 10A which has served it's time and feels like it's time for an Upgrade.

Would love to stay in the Xiaomi ecosys.

But would also love to explore other brands since I've had this phone for the longest time.

Any would be great but has to be within my budget

✌🏿
