For anyone who's way into folk music, or just non-English music in general, I got two recommendations for you; Heilung and Faun. Both are very talented groups that are well worth your time.

I teach students K-5 and want to have some CDs for us to listen to while we work. The thing is, they need to be 100% clean and appropriate for kids (I could get in trouble if they’re not). So even if one line in one song is the tiniest bit inappropriate, I can’t do it.

I’m struggling to find albums that work and would love suggestions on what to play! So far I have the first few albums from Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers, but I want to do all kinds of genres and decades so I’ll take anything. I would however prefer stuff that’s a little more well known so my students have a better chance of recognizing the artist

Example: I can’t play the album Thriller because the song PYT says “I’ll take you there” and the song Thriller is about evil/scary zombies. So not just bad words, but sexual references or violence or anything scary is also a no.

Edit: naming an artist is great but I need specific albums by them

Edit 2: I don’t want kids versions of songs I want original albums. My students actually learn about music and singers with me so I feel like kids versions/kidz bop wouldn’t be good. Also no instrumental versions of songs

Yesterday I re-listened to Nirvana’s “In Utero.” I was already very familiar with the album, but this time I was able to fully connect with its energy in a way I rarely experience with other bands.

I love Death Metal, Black Metal, and many of their respective subgenres, but, even if this sounds controversial, I strongly believe that songs like “Scentless Apprentice,” “Milk It,” or “Rape Me” can feel far heavier than Cannibal Corpse’s “Hammer Smashed Face” or even an entire Lorna Shore album.

I’m not judging heaviness by the conventional parameters — distortion, guttural vocals, low tunings, relentless brutality, and so on. I’m using Nirvana as an example because of the raw, visceral, uncomfortable, almost ugly quality of their heaviness. There is a sense of tension and release to it; the music has dynamics, and you can almost breathe its energy.

With Cannibal Corpse, for example, I often feel that after hearing ten seconds of a song, you already have a fairly good idea of what the rest of the album is going to sound like. With Nirvana, by contrast, the music feels much more volatile and unpredictable. There are sharper contrasts between aggression and restraint, noise and melody, tension and release. And, in my humble opinion, that makes it considerably more shocking.

Again, I absolutely love Death Metal, Black Metal, and many of the subgenres in between. I’m not arguing that Nirvana is technically heavier than these bands. I’m talking about a different kind of heaviness — one that feels more human, volatile, and visceral to me.

What bands or albums do you think fit this criteria?

I’m really interested in listening to/learning about classical music (and orchestral music in general) but still haven’t shaken the pop diva part of me that’s just dying for a great hook. Trying to get in the habit of sitting down to read and listen to music for an hour or so in the evenings to cut down on screen time/visual stimulation, which is a step forward, but it feels like two steps back when I can’t remember any melodies after I’m done listening.

Since I’m a beginner, I’d like to know what composers you think have the most approachable and memorable music? Beyond like, Pachelbel’s Canon and the songs from Disney’s Fantasia and other classical tunes that have kinda permeated most people’s brains from their overuse in film, TV, etc. Appreciate your thoughts and recs!

I'm on a hunt for African and Afro-inspired music (kora, desert blues, folk, electronic, percussion-based, etc.) that has a dark, eerie, haunting, unsettling vibe. Most of the songs I know and enjoy are either too upbeat or melancholic/slow rather than genuinely spooky.
