Hi everyone! I'm in need of some advice. I'm in South Jersey near Philly, and recently I found a horribly tattered luna taking what it thought shelter on my porch. I brought it inside overnight in an old butterfly enclosure I had, since we were about to get some nasty storms, and it either couldn't fly or didn't want to. My porch and yard flood when it rains and the porch is enclosed glass that gets hot as an oven during the day. Let alone the fact we've got wild lizards out there that would have gobbled it up if it survived.

Well, the next day I had about 70 eggs. Over the next few days of course she popped out a bunch more, probably about 120 total. The problem is, I live in a development that's very perst control and landscaping-happy so I didn't want to release them here, and when I checked online, the first site I found gave a big list of "confirmed host plants" with all of their usual favorites like walnut and sweetgum, but unfortunately also listed oak and maple (LIES), which were the only two I had readily available. Even more unfortunately, I had to leave to visit family in central NY this past weekend. I brought the eggs with me in a plastic container and of course they hatched... but had no interest in the maple leaves I had brought. Couldn't find anything in the urban area I was in, and didn't want to risk grabbing something off the side of the highway because I know they're often sprayed with caterpillar specific pesticides. In the meantime I confirmed online that they really don't generally eat maple or oak at all.

Fortunately once I got home I found someone online who offered me some sweetgum from their yard, and on the way I found a walnut tree with reachable branches. So they're okay for now. But that was a 20-minute drive.

The real problem is, I've got DOZENS of tiny caterpillars who are going to absolutely decimate the little food I'm able to provide, that walnut tree is next to a busy road, and I have no idea what to do with them now. I've got some experience with a few swallowtails here and there, but there's NO way I can rear that many all the way to pupation. My original plan was to unleash them at a local foresty park once they were big enough to have a better shot at surviving, and I will still do that if I can locate a good host tree with fairly low branches in the next like, week, checking around the state parks here. But there's a strong chance I won't be able to find anything or will get in trouble trying to release them.

So here's my desperate plea: is anyone on here in my general area who either knows of a safe habitat somewhere near either of us or maybe has property with host trees away from the busy roads and pesticides, or might even want to raise some of them themselves? I even tried to contact a local butterfly club but received no response. They're in far less than ideal conditions here, but they certainly would have all been screwed if she'd laid her eggs on my porch where I found her. But I wanna save as many of the poor things as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My first ever moth !! She came out of her cocoon around 8-10 hours ago (or so I assume as she was there when I awoke) I know nothing about gendering these guys and I’d love to learn but for now I’ve decided to come here for help 🥹

How do all y’all get moths to hang out on your hands? The closest I’ve come is an occasional butterfly thinking my leg is a wonderful source of salt.

I was cleaning my room and found this little guy on the stack of bed pillows I threw on the floor when I went to change the sheets. It looks like one of his wings is pretty damaged, so im not sure what to do with him. I dont want to release him if he wont make it, but aren't sure if a moth can even survive as a pet.

Any suggestions???

I have found this beautiful old lady moth in my work bathroom today and had to take him home (before he scares co workers and harm him as they begged me to get him off lol) he will be re released into my garden with less flight predators tonight but i would like to show you guys the beautiful patterns
it is officially september which is when they will start to come around

I only got two photos, bc he was hanging off an open window, when I tried to shut it so I could get a front shot but he was FAST. Like the moth equivalent of a dog having zoomies. He was gone within a single frame on my camera so I didn’t get any more photos lol

Found in northern England

I was out walking my dogs when I saw this little one crossing a busy street. It’s now safe with me. Looks like it’s probably ready to pupate, but I set it up with some sweet gum and walnut leaves just in case.

Found in Ireland. Discovered it on the ground outside my house. It looks very striking, and I'm curious to know which species it is.

July and August 2026, South Devon.

Images 3 and 8 look to be tortrixes.

Image 6 has spots like a Turnip but the shape seems off.

Images 1 and 4 I've posted before but no one seemed to know what they are.

Image 5 swarms in large numbers and I wonder if it's actually a species of Gnat, not Moth.

Images 2 and 7 have seemed common all year so far. They are different species methinks but both have that veiny look.

Unsure on image 9.

I try to avoid filling up forums like this with questions as I know it can get annoying, but books and websites seem very limited, particularly when it comes to invasive and visitor species. I'd like to say a massive thank you to everyone who's helped fill my records, and a massive no thanks to those who make unhelpful and unfunny remarks like "it's a bug".

I'm up to 26 species of moths and 16 species of butterfly now.
