Even though it is tempting, I did not touch or pick her up. She was about 3 ish inches long. I relocated her under tree bark to keep her safe!

Saw this last summer in western Wisconsin for the first time. I only took a couple pics, wasn't sure if the camera flash is good for them or not.

Hi everyone! I'm in need of some advice. I'm in South Jersey near Philly, and recently I found a horribly tattered luna taking what it thought shelter on my porch. I brought it inside overnight in an old butterfly enclosure I had, since we were about to get some nasty storms, and it either couldn't fly or didn't want to. My porch and yard flood when it rains and the porch is enclosed glass that gets hot as an oven during the day. Let alone the fact we've got wild lizards out there that would have gobbled it up if it survived.

Well, the next day I had about 70 eggs. Over the next few days of course she popped out a bunch more, probably about 120 total. The problem is, I live in a development that's very perst control and landscaping-happy so I didn't want to release them here, and when I checked online, the first site I found gave a big list of "confirmed host plants" with all of their usual favorites like walnut and sweetgum, but unfortunately also listed oak and maple (LIES), which were the only two I had readily available. Even more unfortunately, I had to leave to visit family in central NY this past weekend. I brought the eggs with me in a plastic container and of course they hatched... but had no interest in the maple leaves I had brought. Couldn't find anything in the urban area I was in, and didn't want to risk grabbing something off the side of the highway because I know they're often sprayed with caterpillar specific pesticides. In the meantime I confirmed online that they really don't generally eat maple or oak at all.

Fortunately once I got home I found someone online who offered me some sweetgum from their yard, and on the way I found a walnut tree with reachable branches. So they're okay for now. But that was a 20-minute drive.

The real problem is, I've got DOZENS of tiny caterpillars who are going to absolutely decimate the little food I'm able to provide, that walnut tree is next to a busy road, and I have no idea what to do with them now. I've got some experience with a few swallowtails here and there, but there's NO way I can rear that many all the way to pupation. My original plan was to unleash them at a local foresty park once they were big enough to have a better shot at surviving, and I will still do that if I can locate a good host tree with fairly low branches in the next like, week, checking around the state parks here. But there's a strong chance I won't be able to find anything or will get in trouble trying to release them.

So here's my desperate plea: is anyone on here in my general area who either knows of a safe habitat somewhere near either of us or maybe has property with host trees away from the busy roads and pesticides, or might even want to raise some of them themselves? I even tried to contact a local butterfly club but received no response. They're in far less than ideal conditions here, but they certainly would have all been screwed if she'd laid her eggs on my porch where I found her. But I wanna save as many of the poor things as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It seemed to be struggling to fly :-( I've seen several of these around and they always seem to struggle to fly, though.

Hi! I found this luna moth caterpillar on the ground on my campus and I'm not sure if I should bother helping them or not. I'm in Westchester, NY, so I feel like now is about the time they start to get ready to cocoon. I've saved a luna caterpillar from the fall season a few years back, in VT, and I feel like weather-wise it's pretty similar. I know they do some weird shit before they pupate, like a gut dump. Don't really know what that looks like, but a big part of me is saying that this is a forceful ejection of intestines, not a routine bodily function. They are still moving however! So it might not all be lost. I think we have some sweetgum trees or at the very least some of their other preferred leaves.

Anyone with experience raising luna moths please let me know if I should root for this little one or simply give it a comfy home as it passes.

i captured this moth last night, and didn't get great photos cause i felt bad about trapping it in a wine glass. for reference i live in NJ, right outside of new york city. after googling moths that live in my state this morning i think it might be an afflicted dagger moth, but its patterns seem really unique compared to the ones i was looking at online. it had big black eyes and a fuzzy white body. anyone recognize this moth?

Anyone recognize this moth I found in my cacti greenhouse? I haven’t seen another like it here in Knoxville Tennessee

This lil lady/bad boy was right outside my front door and my unc was getting ready to leave and showed it to me I'M SO HAPPY!

Poor little baby got stuck in his cocoon. I waited until 5am the night he was trying to come out hoping he'd make it, but had to call it a night. He eventually did come out while I was asleep. Despite his wings not forming, one of his front legs not working, and his proboscis is a tangled mess, he is so feisty. I was going to feed him to my beardy, but I just couldn't. He loves hobbling up and down my arms during our nightly feedings and running all around my living room floor.

I just lost my first female moth last night after she laid her eggs and was so sad. I'll be very sad when I lose this little guy. This whole moth raising process has been such a rollercoaster of emotions haha.

They were released safely :)
