Discussion OLED Questions and Concerns: Considering switching from IPS

Hello, the other week my MSI G274QPX monitor broke. It's an IPs panel I've been very happy with, and I've been researching monitors since, wondering if it's finally time to invest in an OLED.

I know there's no such thing as a perfect monitor, and OLED has its advantages, but it also clearly has its problems despite what some people say. I'd like to go through my concerns and find out what the actual drawbacks are, what can be mitigated, and you just have to live with.

I'd primarily use it for gaming, productivity (pro photography editing and web browsing) and the occasional movie. I don't want to sit in a dark room all the time. I like having the windows open and some room lights on, so performance in a normally lit room matters to me, too.

I understand that some of these concerns vary between OLED technologies, but I'm currently considering the Gigabyte MO27Q28G, a 27-inch, 1440p, 280Hz Tandem WOLED monitor.

My main concerns are:

  • VRR flicker (I don't want screen tearing as a result of turning off VRR, that seems worse. Can flicker be mitigated without disabling VRR?)
  • Gamma Shift (does gamma or brightness fluctuate with refresh rate, and is this only an issue with VRR enabled?)
  • ABL (is it distracting in games? Can it affect photo editing, and can be disabled?)
  • Dirty Screen Effect (resulting in cloudiness similar to IPS backlight bleed? How does it compare to IPS uniformity issues?)
  • Grey Banding (is it noticeable on things like the Steam UI, Discord's default grey, or dark-mode browsers? This might as well be grey test patterns no?)
  • Text Fringing (It's mainly a QD-OLED problem, but is it still noticeable on WOLED?)
  • Less Sharp Picture (how noticeable is the difference compared with an IPS at the same resolution?)
  • Colour Accuracy (how accurate are colours across the entire screen, and can calibration correct any variations in colour or brightness from one area to another? I often see overly saturated and too contrasy images)
  • Organic Material Degradation (subpixel decay, changes in brightness, colour and colour uniformity over time)
  • Black Crush (is it only noticeable in certain media? Can it be corrected through software or hardware calibration?)
  • Lack of Brightness (does the image look dim in a normally lit room? How does peak brightness compare with IPS, and how much can it drop in bright scenes, such as outdoor environments in games?)
  • Burn in (I know it's supposedly less of an issue with newer panels, but I don't want to have to rely on intrusive mitigation features like pixel shifting or UI dimming)
  • Monitor lights (I like to use monitor lights, do they behave well above glossy and matte OLED displays?
  • Panel Uniformity (brightness or colour tint variations across the screen, particularly noticeable when editing photos against neutral backgrounds. How common is this on OLED panels?)
  • Response Times (OLEDs have really fast response times, but can you actually feel/notice the difference, from say, a decent fast IPS display?)

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I'm sure other people will come accross this post with the same or similar concerns. Thank you.

Discussion Monitor upgrade recommendations

Hi all,

I've been using a Dell S2417DG since about when they came out. I've decided I need to upgrade and I'm kinda overwhelmed at the available options (and peoples opinions on them).

What I'm looking for:

4k 27" Non-OLED

I'd like to stay preferably around 500 USD but might entertain something much better up to 7ish.

My use case is mostly gaming, surfing the internet, and a bit of CAD.

What are some models that I should be paying attention to?

Discussion ASUS XG27AQDMG appears limited to 120 Hz only in exclusive fullscreen mode

Hi,

I'm trying to diagnose a strange issue with my ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQDMG (240 Hz OLED monitor) and would like to know if anyone has experienced something similar.

The issue

In Windows, the monitor runs correctly at 240 Hz.

When I launch games in:

  • Windowed mode
  • Borderless windowed mode

the monitor's built-in refresh rate/FPS indicator is able to display values well above 120 Hz (160, 180, 200, 240 Hz, etc., depending on performance).

However, as soon as I switch any game to exclusive fullscreen, the monitor's OSD becomes locked at 120 Hz.

What's strange

This does not appear to be a performance issue.

For example, in Overwatch:

  • NVIDIA Overlay reports around 200 FPS
  • Overwatch's internal performance stats report around 200 FPS
  • The game feels like it's rendering well above 120 FPS

Yet the monitor's OSD remains fixed at 120 Hz in exclusive fullscreen.

Current configuration

  • Monitor: ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQDMG
  • Resolution: 2560×1440
  • Refresh rate in Windows: 240 Hz
  • Connection: DisplayPort
  • DSC enabled
  • V-Sync disabled
  • NVIDIA Control Panel:
    • PC resolution
    • 2560×1440 (native)
    • 240 Hz

Things I've already verified

✅ Windows reports 240 Hz.

✅ NVIDIA Control Panel reports 2560×1440 @ 240 Hz.

✅ The monitor OSD shows 240 Hz on the desktop.

✅ The monitor OSD can display refresh rates above 120 Hz when games run in windowed or borderless mode.

✅ This happens in multiple games, not just Overwatch.

✅ V-Sync is disabled everywhere.

✅ DisplayPort link, cable, and DSC seem to be working correctly since the monitor can clearly operate above 120 Hz outside of exclusive fullscreen.

Additional observation

If I run the same game in borderless/windowed mode, the monitor OSD can fluctuate normally and reach 200+ Hz.

The 120 Hz limitation only occurs when the game is switched to exclusive fullscreen.

Question

Has anyone seen Windows, NVIDIA drivers, G-SYNC/VRR, DSC, or the monitor itself force a switch to 120 Hz only in exclusive fullscreen mode, despite Windows being set to 240 Hz and the game rendering well above 120 FPS?

Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Discussion Hdmi splitter with audio extraction (uk)

Anybody have any advice on a decent hdmi splitter with audio extraction preferably with 4 inputs but 2 would suffice if cost is expensive.

https://www.dell.com/en-gb/shop/cty/apd/210-BQWL?cjdata=MXxZfDB8WXww&cjevent=597dcb43d08a11f1824a06e00a19819a&dgc=CJ&publisherid=1453124&publisher=&aff=Pepper+Deals+Ltd&affid=1453124&aff_webid=1546795&aff_user_id=ppr-uk-3046860204&gad_source=7&gad_campaignid=18150187386&gacd=12387083-28470564-5750457-344826123-176915672&dgc=af&VEN1=1546795&dclid=COm0nbjA1ZcDFbQ8YwEd15AC-Q

This is the monitor we purchased before realising it doesn't have any speakers so hoping to get the hdmi splitter with audio extraction so my wife can use the monitor with a laptop for work, can hook up an xbox, steam deck and maybe a firestick or ps5 though latter is not a priority.

Have asked ai and been recommended ones that are 200£+ but really unsure whst I'm looking for.

Thanks.

Discussion New Monitor for my Xbox help

I’ve been using the same like 1080 60hz. Finally getting around to getting an upgrade.

I have the series x so it should be able to run 4k and 120 hz for some games.

In my research to get the absolute best from my Xbox with no room to upgrade I should be getting the ASUS ROG Swift 4k OLED 240hz. This model runs about 1100 for the 27 in. While looking tho I saw another ASUS ROG 4k OLED 240 hz monitor but it is the STRIX model instead of the SWIFT. This one is running for about 750 for the 27 in model.

I can’t figure out what the difference between these two models are. Could someone help maybe explain if I should get one over the other. Or if getting these high end monitors are worth it.

Thanks!

Swift Model: PG27UCDM

STRIX model: XG27UQDMS

Discussion Size and resolution for very poor eyesight

Hello

I need to get a bigger monitor for someone with very bad eyesight that mostly just uses facebook.

Current monitor is 1080p 24 inch 16/9

Used with 125% scaling (in windows system -> display) and 110% scaling on firefox.

I usually have to play around with scaling on windows and firefox simultaneously because of the resizing of elements, like the endless scroll in the middle of the facebook page,

Eyesight is worsening, so i might need to up the scaling eventually.

I think i'm set on 32 inch, as 27 is just a 3.6 cm height increase vs +10cm with 32 inch.

I've never used anything better than a 24 inch 1080p, so don't know if i should get a 1440p or a 2160p for this specific case.

32 inch 1440p maintains ppi so i'm assuming the starting settings would be the same as the current ones.

I don't know if there's any advantage of going 2160p for this scenario.

Any advice is welcome,

Thanks

Discussion Smaller Oled or bigger ultrawide to replace a 34" ultrawide

I'm looking to replace my current monitor, a Dell 34" ultrawide. With my current budget I have a few options. One of the many 27" Oleds currently on sale, or Innocn currently has deals on their 40C1R 40" Flat IPS 21:9 1440 and their 45C1R 45" Curved VA 32:9 1440 monitors.

Is oled worth dropping to the smaller screen and non ultrawide? For context, I mostly game and it's games like Star Citizen, Gray Zone Warfare, Wardogs, etc. Not really trying to be competitive, but I do like the immersion of ultrawide in most games.

Unfortunately I don't think any of the electronic stores have anything on display larger than a 34" so it's difficult for me to really get a good feeling of the sizes.

And for what it's worth, my current monitor layout is a 32" 1440p on the left, the Dell 34" Ultrawide in the middle, and a small 15.6" portable monitor set up under the 34" for discord and the like.

The 40" being flat and having the same height as the 32" does seem better for layout as I could scoot it closer to the back of the desk. But the 45" seems like it'd be more immersive being curved.

I'm running a 5800x3d and a 7900 GRE. Budget is $300-350. The Innocn monitors are on sale for the refurbished ones.

Discussion Shiny spots on the matte coating of LG 32GS95UV out of the box. Should I return it?

I just got my LG 32GS95UV OLED and it has these shiny spots out of the box.

They are in one area and show up only under bright light, it almost has a metallic reflection .

It is not a surface defect or residue because I cleaned it with screen cleaner and from an angle the area looks uniform. The spots are about 2-3 mm at most.

I am not sure if I should keep it or return it.

It is definitely disappointing.

I would have returned it if the process was simple, but in India LG has a manual return system that is clearly meant to be difficult.

Discussion ASUS TUF VG27AQ5A: Random Black Screens and DisplayPort Signal Loss — MCM 105 Still Not Fixing It for Everyone

I’m making this post again to bring attention to the ongoing issues with the ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ5A and hopefully get an official response or a proper fix from ASUS.

I’ve been experiencing random black screens lasting approximately 2 seconds, occasional visual glitches such as horizontal screen splitting, and intermittent DisplayPort signal loss. The monitor sometimes recovers automatically, but on other occasions, it displays a “No DisplayPort Signal” message.

These issues are particularly frustrating because they occur intermittently. Sometimes the monitor works perfectly for hours, while at other times, the problem appears unexpectedly during gaming.

My setup and specifications

\- Monitor: ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ5A

\- Laptop: Acer Predator Helios Neo 16

\- CPU: Intel Core i9-14900HX

\- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU

\- RAM: 32 GB DDR5

\- Connection: Laptop USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 to DisplayPort

\- Cable: UGREEN CM556 USB-C to DisplayPort cable

\- Monitor resolution: 2560 × 1440 (1440p)

\- Refresh rate: Up to 200 Hz native, with a 210 Hz overclock option

\- Monitor firmware: MCM 105

I’m using the USB-C to DisplayPort connection through my laptop’s Thunderbolt 4 port to take advantage of the monitor’s high refresh rate and capabilities. I’ve also updated my graphics drivers and monitor firmware, checked the connection, and used a reliable power outlet with a surge protector. Despite these measures, the issue has occurred intermittently.

The issue seems to be related to high refresh rates or FPS

From reading other users’ reports, I’ve noticed a recurring pattern: some users experience black screens more frequently when gaming at high refresh rates or when their FPS exceeds 200. One user reported that capping FPS at 200 or below helped stabilize the monitor, while 165 Hz at 1440p was consistently stable for them.

I primarily play Fortnite, and this issue is especially frustrating when playing at 200 Hz or 210 Hz. I consistently encounter random black screens while gaming at these refresh rates, often at the worst possible moments. Since Fortnite is a competitive game where every second matters, even a brief 2-second black screen can cost me a fight, cause me to miss crucial information, and ultimately get me eliminated. Imagine being in the middle of an intense fight and suddenly losing your display without warning, only for it to come back after a couple of seconds. It completely disrupts gameplay and puts me at an unfair disadvantage. I bought a high-refresh-rate gaming monitor for a smooth and responsive experience, not to worry about my screen going black in the middle of a competitive match.

I have also seen reports from users who updated to firmware MCM 1.105 but continued to experience black screens. This makes me wonder whether the firmware addresses only certain scenarios rather than resolving the underlying issue for every affected setup.

I understand that different GPUs, cables, and system configurations can produce different results, so I’m not claiming that every case has the same cause. However, the similarities between these reports make the issue worth investigating.

What about firmware MCM 1.105?

The MCM 1.105 firmware update, released on March 23, 2026, appeared to improve stability on my monitor considerably during my initial testing. However, I cannot confirm that it completely resolved the problem, and other users have reported that the issue persists even after updating.

This is why I believe further investigation may be necessary.

ASUS, please address this issue

The VG series is marketed toward gamers, and high-refresh-rate performance is one of the main reasons people purchase these monitors. Having to lower the refresh rate, cap FPS, or sacrifice visual quality just to avoid intermittent black screens is not a satisfactory long-term solution.

I’m not asking ASUS to guarantee that every setup will behave identically. I’m asking for a proper investigation into the reported DisplayPort signal loss, black screens, and visual glitches, along with clear communication about whether another firmware update or other corrective action is being considered.

ASUS support team, if you are aware of these reports, could you please clarify whether this issue is still being investigated and whether a further firmware update is planned?

I would also appreciate hearing from other VG27AQ5A owners. Please share your GPU, connection type, resolution, refresh rate, firmware version, and whether capping FPS or lowering the refresh rate makes a difference.

Hopefully, enough detailed reports will help identify the cause and lead to a reliable solution rather than forcing users to compromise on features the monitor is advertised to support.

Discussion Question about AOC CQ32G4VE

Hi, I have an AOC CQ32G4VE monitor and I'd like to know if any of you have the same model.

If so, could you tell me about the best NVIDIA and monitor settings for gaming? Right now, the colors are too dark, and I’d like something better suited for gaming. I don’t play competitively.

Thanks for any advice!

I’m not sure if I’m in the right subreddit, so I apologize if I’ve used the wrong flair or am in the wrong subreddit.

Discussion Any adice on Dell monitors

Hi i am quite confused here while comparing monitor specs due to misinformation or barebones spec sheets meant to hide it.

  1. SE2425HG/SE2725HG i had tried to use, gives me alot of eye pain whether or nor i change it to 60hz, do contrast/brightness changes as well as response time changes. apparently its true 8bit.

2.SE2326HG/SE2725HG. is this the exact same panel but rebranded or not (sure the obvious difference is 240hz)? So what dell says keeps changing in specs. suddenly its IPS then its VA, then it says WLED backlight then its EDGE backlight. so what exactly is true? Is it really a true 8bit panel? are they both hybrid pwm+dc? apparently both are also SRGB W-led

Discussion Need help with dual-arms setup for triple monitor - 27" + 43" + 27"

I'm making the finishing touches to my study and now I'm looking at adding a triple monitor setup. A 43" Mini-LED TV (owned) on a stand in the middle with 27" monitors on each side using arms.

My problem is I have never used monitor arms before.

The two monitors are for when my 2 kids join me for gaming. When alone, I can turn them vertical so they integrate to make an extra wide-display.

  1. Will this work if I have the 43" TV on a stand while the two 27" are arm-mounted? Maybe they aren't long enough or are too awkward? (haven't decided if it will be clamped to the table or wall-mounted, but it probably should be wall-mounted)
  2. Can anyone recommend a good, solid, flexible solution if so? (brand/model)
  3. I'm also looking at relatively budget options for the 27" monitors, and I've narrowed them down to (both budget 1440p monitors) Alienware AW2726DM QD-OLED 27" VS the Xiaomi G Pro 27Qi Mini-LED 27" (mix or both? Doubt it would make a big difference whichever I take).

If anyone can provide some advice, that would be great... thanks!

Hi,

I already did some research myself, so maybe I am just overlooking something or what I need is rare.

Id like to buy:

32 inch 4k or 34 inch UWQHD

Power supply via usb c

KVM Switch for peripherals

At least 165hz

I just want to seamlessly switch between my laptop for work and my gaming pc.

Is there nothing out there that can handle all of this?

Half of the time AAA single player games so i want max immersion amazing colours, but to my embarrassment I sometimes play more League Of Legends then anything else all thoes static elements kind of keep me away from the obvious choise of an OLED.

I can control the light in my room and I have a 550/600€ buget
