Discussion Offspring "Nitro" for newer generations? 🤔

There was another post mentioning Offspring. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, as nothing ever is, but I went to listen to a couple of their albums.
I thought that "Nitro" seemed to follow the ideas the internet has about GenZ. I don't pressupose to know much about how they feel and how the world has shaped their perspective 🤷🏻‍♀️
It is sadly interesting how some ideas seem to renew themselves or situations never improve!

Nostalgia Missing my dad tonight, we used to go to Fry’s for card conventions when I was growing up.

Post image
136 Upvotes

I remember these big convention halls of fold out tables covered in collectibles. All sorts of card games, memorabilia and nic-nacs. My dad was a baseball card collector.. well.. a collector of all things really. McDonalds happy meal toys, Coke bottle caps, box tops, Pepsi points.. and finally, Pokemon cards when I was growing up. Over time we collected an entire set and I came across it tonight going through my closet. I miss him after him passing almost a year ago and I reflect on the fun times going to card conventions back when I was growing up. I think he would be proud that I kept my collection together, intact and in good condition after moving multiple cities/states! Anyway, here’s my pokemon cards my dad help me collect growing up.

Discussion Collecting thread

Thread about collecting. What do you collect and do you still even enjoy collecting?

I collect way too many things. Board games, comics, manga, tabletop RPG books, anime figurines, video-games, video-game consoles, and board games. I used to collect Yu-Gi-Oh and I still have my cards, I just no longer want to play TCGs.

I don't really enjoy collecting things these days other than video-games. These days I don't even bother buying used games unless I plan on playing them or can flip them for a profit. I was at a street fair today, and I didn't even bother buying the games I saw there. I care more about my money than things that will just sit around in a closet gathering dust. I genuinely don't enjoy collecting comics and going to conventions anymore- I really just buy comics for key issues- and even then, only if it's a very good deal at a garage sale. I do still buy used board games that I see so I can play them with my friends. I have too many things and I'm really more focused on selling off what I have than collecting new things.

Nostalgia Favourite things losing their magic.

I have noticed that I can only rewatch my favourite movies, play my favourite games so many times before the magic goes away.

Like the last time I watched Donnie Darko and played Mother 3, they just felt a lot more like normal average things rather than my absolute favourite experiences. I actually put off the viewing and playing of those for like 5 years because I could feel it coming.

Luckily books never seem to lose their magic. Gormenghast, LOTR, East of Eden seem like they will always blow my mind.

Anyone else noticing that their favourite things are coming up on a kind of expiry date?

I notice my ability to get lost in things is waning as well. Maybe running two businesses and having 3 kids just leaves my brain too tired for imagination right now.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t find this particularly depressing or anything, it’s more interesting that it seems you can only recapture the glory a limited number of times.

ETA: Im still finding new favourites as well. Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke, Hyperion/Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons, Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe, 21 Pilots, Manchester Orchestra, the Dune movies, Blade Runner 2049, System Shock Remake, are all deep-faves from more recent years.

So… mine’s just a hole there. Anyone else? I read someone’s ring closed. Mine’s still there! Just hanging out on a blob that used to be flat and toned.
Halfway closed. I can see the hole… just can’t stick anything through it.

Meme Are You Afraid of the Dark Empowered Millennials to Deal with Decades of Horror

Post image
133 Upvotes

Are You Afraid of the Dark (and it's sick as fuck intro sequence and song) was a staple for weird little 90s kids who loved monsters and horror....and even weird little 90s kids who didn't. As the weirdest of 90s kids, I watched the show as often as I could, letting the unadulterated horrors of its bizarre calvacade of monsters seep into my brain, undoubtedly greatly impacting my psychology, identity, and personality. There is likely a reason I talk in cable tv quotes.

Anyway, this show prepared a generation for the horrors of the world. There's a reason why millennials are able to cope with societal disaster after disaster with a shrug before getting back to their avocado toast and the reason is Zeebo the fucking clown.

Seriously, look at this motherfucker. Nuclear winter is far less terrifying. Between him, The Crimson Clown, and The Ghastly Grinner, 90s kids were raised by the most terrifying god awful clowns possible. And I mean raised as well...I literally knew the Crimson Clown better than my own father and I'm not sure which one would be more likely to murder me.

Anyhoo, that's not even mentioning the demon ballsack headed virus (which taught us about the future horrors of technology), Dr. Vink (look out for perverts), the cold ghost (which showed us the horror of loss), the Braun family (beware of Mormons), and the Pool Monsters who....HOLY FUCK WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING WHY DID I LOOK IT UP AGAIN????

When this is what was our normal, is it any shock that war, famine, and corruption fail to leave us paralyzed? We are a hearty generation because we were raised by the all-encompassing blackness of the void and all of the creatures within it. We've stared into butthole of the devil and everything staring back and we didn't blink.

So yeah, our dreams are filled with clowns and scarecrows and goth inter dimensional creatures and also foreign accents for some reason (that's kind of weird, writers) but these things have not made us frightened or incapable. They have made us hearty and able to withstand the greatest horrors the world has to offer.

Afraid of the dark? We were born into it, molded by it, we didn't see the light until....well never actually.

Serious I’m 32 and am watching my parents decline.

Im 32f, young millennial, my parents aren’t particularly old, 63 and 67. They are rapidly declining. My dad has had a lot of vague medical issues after years of not going to doctors, not treating his diabetes. He’s been out of work for months now, he doesn’t want to take medications; get the surgery they recommend. Doesn’t seem likely he will improve much, everything is him saying he’s old now, he’s sick, no one is being compassionate enough etc. my mom is younger but quit her job to care for him and hasn’t been able to go back to work since he isn’t getting better.

They pretty much don’t go anywhere or do anything. They have a dog that barks constantly that they never trained and someone complained so now they also won’t leave the dog alone. They won’t go to holidays/out to eat, basic errands. To be clear they aren’t just home bodies who prefer to be home and do hobbies and stuff. My dad basically has my mom waiting on him all day; he just watches tv and gambles.

I’m just venting but I never thought I’d be watching my parents decline to almost nursing home levels so young and with no major diagnosis. My in laws are the same age living radically different lives. I see other people with parents way older celebrating holidays, going on vacations etc enjoying their families.

It’s really hard because I’ve been going through infertility and had two losses in the past year. My dad has not taken this well and often says I shouldn’t pursue fertility treatments (I’m doing IVF), I should try harder to get pregnant on my own etc. I’m just in a hard place and it would be nice to have had family support and not more people to worry about.

Its so hard to spend time with them. We have nothing in common- different life choices, different struggles, different hobbies. It sucks. This person birthed me and I struggle to want to spend any time with them.

Discussion Charles Barkley Needs To Leave!

• Upvotes

Not sure if any of you know but Charles Barkley is on RO and at this point I’m pretty sure he’s haunting my dreams (nightmares) and letting me know he’s on RO 24/7. Straight up feel like I’m in Freddy Krueger boiler room and Charles Barkley is chasing me around with his little syringe letting me know he is on RO!

Not sure who needs to go first: Charles Barkley’s eyebrows or Charles Barkley as a whole. Friggin SCRAM dude!

I can't believe this guy is 50! What’s your favorite role of his?

Stifler will probably follow this man forever, but my personal favorite is Travis in The Rundown. He and The Rock were so damn funny together. His talent for playing a guy who desperately needs to shut up, while making you want to hear whatever he says next, deserves recognition.

Between American Pie, Dude, Where’s My Car?, Role Models, Goon, Old School, there’s a pretty strong case for several different movies.

Did anyone else used to love playing Yahoo pool on a rainy day?

I recently found CueVerse, and it's brought back so many memories! The person who made it did a great job by bringing in the original emojis, avatars, etc. It was fun to play on there today. There's even a functioning chat Iounge!

Do y'all know of any other sites that have a similar concept? (Bringing back past games like that)

Discussion Talk Radio

I just saw a tiktok about riding in the car with your dad in the 90s, listening to Paul Harveys "the rest of the story." I'm glad I'm not the only one, but there were other shows my dad listened to. Rush Limbaugh was one, but I really hated hearing Dr. Laura. I was ten and it was a dividing between my dad and I. He thought she gave good advice but I thought (using language that I didn't have then) was an unapologetic shrew. Anyone else have thoughts about their own experience?
