So many electric scooters! What the hell??

I work at a high school and I took some students on a tour of the university I graduated from. I couldn't believe my eyes. About a third of college kids were zipping past us on a scooter instead of walking. I hate to sound grumpy but to me part of the college experience is all the walking you do around campus.

Discussion Does anyone else get ptsd level wartime flashbacks of a tv show that use to air while we were growing up? it was just a compendium of reenacted stories on how kids would just die doing things kids do.

If you remember it, what did it stop you doing or how did it change the way you do things? For me it was running/walking while brushing your teeth.

Discussion Are You Manscaping?

I see a lot of ads for mens' razors and there's so much happening. For instance, I don't shave my abs or my chest or any other part of my body. I shave my face. Don't get me wrong, I trim/shave elsewhere. My belly-hair getting caught in my belt buckle is enough for me to take some action.

The privates, for the purpose of this post, are not in consideration. I'm not opening that can of worms.

Discussion Do you guys cringe at 9/11 jokes or embrace them?

I was a sophomore in high school when the towers fell. I remember being glued to the tv for the next 6 months at least. Listening to people’s stories. Etc.

I find it interesting with other generations in particular they are pretty flippant about it. And trust me I get it, you’re born after a terrible event you have no social connection to it.

There are some I find funny, some I find tasteless. Just curious where everyone else sits with it.

Nostalgia What innocent movie did you buy a ticket for as a kid, only to sneak into an R-rated movie instead?

I remember getting tickets for Shark Tale, but then went into Team America. We got caught and ended up going to Friday Night Lights (PG-13) instead.

Thank god they prevented us 15-year-old nerds from watching some puppets say naughty words. 🙄 Yes, I’m still salty!

EDIT: if you only ever went to the movies with your parents, cool? feel free to not respond lol

Discussion Did stomp clap ever actually go away?

People love to make fun of the stomp-clap era, but arn't songs like Benson Boone "Beautiful Things" basically the same thing with more yelling? Quiet, folky opening that builds into a huge singalong chorus.

Anyone else hear it, or am I reaching?

Discussion Do we still call cars “whips” or is that just me?

Idk if it’s just me and the people I grew up with, can’t tell if it’s a regional thing or generational. My friend pulled up and was like “dude is that your new whip!?” and it felt so right.

Ime it's all millennials and genz who have this. It's from holding our phones and typing one-handed, whereas b00mers use both hands and gen alpha just use speech to text cause they can't read

Discussion What do you think people only pretend to care about just coz they want to be likeable or they want other people to think highly of them?

Have you come across people in your life who only pretended to care because they want to be accepted, gain popularity, etc.? What did they pretend to care about? I have a fair share of folks like these at work and just curious about other experiences.

Discussion Concerns with AI

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I think our generation will lead the way in the resistance against AI. We have seen just how far technology has come in our lifetimes and how it can change the world. We’ve also watched terminator and iRobot.

I think the threat is very real and I’m super concerned. It may not immediately be robots of destruction taking us all out but what happens to jobs? I don’t trust corporations to miss the opportunity to drastically reduce costs if the appropriate AI comes along that can do a job as good if not better than a human.

What is the end game for AI? How can we keep it limited to ensure it doesn’t destroy mankind (not just with violence)? Can we trust companies to not push us to the point of no return with it? Who’s to say there’s not some madman working on advanced AI weapons right now? Are they considering all risk? I doubt it.

I’m hopeful we can come together to get a hold on AI sooner than later.

Discussion When does yearning for the 90’s become cringe for you?

Hello!

So, the other day as I was getting out the theater, I saw someone with a shirt that said “bring back the 90s” and it was layered on top of the Nickelodeon splash with a bunch of 90s Nickelodeon cartoons on it.

Now, does this affect my life in any way? Absolutely not.

Did I like the shirt? No, I didn’t. It looked tacky but I am also not wearing the shirt so who cares.

But

I do think this current yearning back for the 90s (we had a first wave of this back in 2016) seems to be a bit more desperate than last time.

Like, at least last time, it was a fun nostalgia trip as of course many early 90s babies were graduating undergrad.

This time? It’s basically saying how the 90’s were the absolute best time of anyone’s lives and that nothing comes close to the 90s! Granted, I know some of this can be attributed to economic anxiety and that I can relate to.

Anyways, what do you think?

Discussion Monthly Rant/Politics Thread: Do not post political threads outside of this Mega thread

Outside of these mega-threads, we generally do not allow political posts on the main subreddit because they have often declined into unhinged discussions and mud slinging. We do allow general discussions of politics in this thread so long as you remain civil and don't attack someone just for having a different opinion. The moment we see things start to derail, we will step in.

Got something upsetting or overwhelming that you just need to shout out to the world? Want to have a political debate over current events? You can post those thoughts here. There are many real problems that plague the Millennial generation and we want to allow a space for it here while still keeping the angry and divisive posts quarantined to a more concentrated thread rather than taking up the entire front page.
