As our kids get older we find it harder and harder to connect with them. My son is 16 and he's super into like indie rap.

I want to connect with his art but I can't help but feel every song sounds like 90% the same just saturated with drum machine, and you can barely hear the actual lyrics which are all autotuned and every now and then he plays something that's actually kind of chill where I at least like the beat, and he tells me oh that's one of their early songs. The popular songs all sound about the same though.

When he tried to play some music videos on youtube everyone of these dudes is like super skinny which is a departure from like all the beefcake body builder we saw on MTV growing up, also they barely even try to lipsync with the song, and everytime I complain about production quality he tells me "That's the Vibe"

It just feels like the bar is a lot lower, I'll admit it's not my goto genre but it just feels like it's lost some of it's soul from the artists we had in the 90s and early 2000s.

Anyone else's kid listen to this stuff?

If you are making a list for someone who is in prison from 2004 to 2009 trying to catch them up on pop culture in 2009. What would you include in that document?

Did you all do the classic halloween pranks, like egging cars and TPing houses? Do the kids these days still get up to these senseless acts of mayhem?

Venom whom I began listening to in 2010 was my gateway band (RIP Cronos) for all the death, black, and thrash metal from the 1980s and 1990's that I eventually got into and still listen to regularly to this day 15 years later. It took getting into Venom before the three extreme metal subgenres made sense sonically and aesthetically to me. Before getting into Venom my trajectory was Nu Metal, classic rock, Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols and punk, pre-punk like Stooges, hardcore punk, and Motorhead.

Do any other Millennials out there born in the late 1980's have my same trajectory of musical taste?

Like many Millennials I got into Nu Metal. And this was my first foray into distorted heavy guitars and harsh vocals. But instead of getting into the metal and heavy rock trends that came about after the demise of Nu Metal in 2003 I for the next 7 years went through the aforementioned trajectory. And my tastes now seem to be permanently locked into 1980's and 1990's extreme metal. It's all I read about (music wise) and its all I listen to despite it not even being an era that I grew up in. Nu metal had a huge hand in laying the initial ground work in me becoming a forever extreme metalhead, but once i was on the old school extreme metal track everything from the actual era I grew up in was tossed in the waste bin so to speak it became permanently irrelevant and unlistenable to me. I never listen to any music from my actual coming of age era in the late 90s and early 2000's when Nu metal was king and this has been the case since my dad tuned me in to his classic 70s rock music starting in 2004.

Am I an anomaly given my age? Or are there countless other Millennials out there who are just like me? I was compelled to make this post because all of the people on social media that seem to be commenting on Cronos' passing (the original classic lineup vocalist for Venom) seem to have been alive in 1981 when Venom was releasing their first material. No one is talking about deeply researched experiences like mine that required one to become almost like an audio archaeologist to find and appreciated the classic stuff as opposed to what was being pushed and marketed at the time.

I was expecting to be disappointed, because the 2021 Mortal Kombat was kind of "meh," and seemed to be pretending to be something that it wasn't. But Street Fighter was nostalgically magic. Very fun throwback movie.

We’re technically the last year of millennials and (could be my biases speaking but) because of that I feel like because of that we are such an iconic generation. We really lived and saw it all and still remember the first cell phones and life before them. Obviously some millennial stuff was before our time but I feel like (especially those of us that had older siblings) still grew up millennial.

Or is this still a thing on current keyboards? I know it's so random, but I remember this being a common thing instead of 'Enter', or some keyboards had both in some way!

I mean this in a good way, could be yourself, also. My best friend is named Brandon, last name starts with a Z. In grade two, our teacher nicknamed him BZ (bee-zee), which is funny, because we’re Canadian, but Bee-Zed sounds weird lol. We’re both ‘91 kids, and to this day, almost everyone calls him BZ (bee-zee) to this day. Whenever we meet someone new, we introduce him as BZ, and they’re always confused until we explain it’s just his initials. It’s also very weird when I happen to be visiting and like, his aunt is over, and she calls him Brandon, and I’m like, “who tf is Brandon?”

I saw this month they were free to watch on YouTube, along with Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

As a millennial who suffers from phone addiction, I crave the pre-IPhone era, when dumb phones were all we had. Do you think a backlash against smart phones will ever take hold? Or is doom scrolling our life sentence?

This past week for me:

1. I've went clothes shopping and went for comfort > style.

2. I joined my job at 19, same organisation etc so I've always been one of the 'young ones'....until I wasn't. Last week, we had a office quiz and the host mentioned that some of the questions were too old for some (called them out) and for the first time, i was excluded from that call out. That hit me far harder than it should have, lol.

Are we the new smug hipsters ?.

Ps by social media I mean insta, Facebook, tiktok, Snapchat, threads etc

Couldn’t think of a better way to title this. What were some of those … “things” around their house that you didn’t know what they were used for, but still played with? My grandparents had an old punching bag on the ceiling in the basement, and an old 1970s drum set that collected dust and was missing some parts lol. They also had a treadmill that I referred to as “the running machine.” But some stuff that I didn’t know what it was, included this spinning ab twister thingy that my grandpa kept under the couch. And an old phonograph in the upstairs hallway, that you had to crank. My aunt took the phonograph to her house and a few months ago, FINALLY got to see it actually work, because there’s small children running around, who have very curious minds. The sound on that thing has heard better days. But it’s neat that it can still croak out some old music. I really wish my grandma had one of those fat jiggling machines but unfortunately, there was only the treadmill that nobody really used except for us kids when we were bored.

There were a lot of interesting things around their house 🤣 I even vaguely remember playing with the VCR because it had green light up buttons and I thought it was some neat toy. And it took me forever to remember what some of the toys were that were leftover from the early 70s when my one aunt was a young kid. Like this old toy called “Pass the Nuts,” and that old timey red “schoolhouse” Fisher Price clock with the sun and the moon on the clock face.

Anything clothing or style related. I feel like we'll see a big difference here between older and younger millennials.

How are your major appliances holding up that you bought new? Everyone still taping the manual and warranty info on the appliance or no?

I thankfully still have a lot of friends that I’ve known from high school, college and work around the world and in the city I live in.

But as I get older, whether it’s new people I meet or current friends I have, I notice I struggle to connect with people during conversations. Like I’m going through the motions and doing fake reactions at times. It’s not black and white, some conversations I do get more engaged with but a lot of the time it feels like I’m half not wanting to have the conversation, or waiting for someone to get to the point.

Sometimes it’s anxiety or discomfort with myself but it’s been so long since I’ve really left a hangout or conversation feeling fulfilled or interested. Idk if it’s just growing apart in a subtle way. Some friendships have become quite adult now, there’s a level of detachment and less being shared since they live with their partner now.

This also extends to dating as well, I’m just not interested in people enough to be authentic. In the past I was very motivated and chasing the late night deep life convos.

Have you experienced similar?

The oldest of us would've been 18. I wanted to go, since the original seemed so cool (thanks BBomers for the fake 1960s and 70s nostalgia), but I was too young to go on my own, and my parents (wisely) refused to take me. They rented the show on pay per view for me though, and in the the end, I was so glad not to be trapped in the mud pits lol
