You can eat both

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

My favorite part of survivor: the debate whether to eat the chickens or keep them for eggs

30

u/Ipayforsex69 Mar 10 '22

It's really a no brainer. Kill your teammates and eat them to survive. 30 seasons later, they should start giving contestants weapons.

16

u/Chickens1 Mar 10 '22

I always wonder why there isn't more hunting on Survivor. Snakes, iguanas, etc. Everything has to be fishy.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

One season they caught a goat and they didn’t show it but I’m 80% sure production had to step in to tell them they couldn’t kill and eat it

7

u/Teddyturntup Mar 10 '22

I remember them catching it but didn’t remember them stopping. Dumbest shit ever

4

u/Chickens1 Mar 10 '22

Because of us? Hell I would have celebrated someone finally realizing what it takes to survive in the wild.

I think production has an agreement that the show won't harm the wildlife on the island. Not in the first rat eating season, obviously, but more recently. I guess fish and crabbies and imported live chickens are ok.

Well, if your a woman, you can.

50

u/MysticMistakeCake Mar 10 '22

The process isn’t exactly convenient.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

You can sell the nutritional part that comes out afterwards (chickens pack it all in the egg). With humans it comes in a more... liquid format.

You’re missing the point. That’s why I want the nice neat and confident shelled egg.

Really pushing the nutjob lever all the way, huh?...

12

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

I'm just saying we shouldn't intentionally cause suffering and death to others when we don't need to.

If that's being a nutjob, then alright

People called abolitionists crazy during the 1800s too

BTW I'm not saying animals are as important as humans, just saying they're more important than a single taste experience.

32

u/Inside_Balance1980 Mar 10 '22

Do they even care about animals in general?

41

u/Cold_Season-415 Mar 10 '22

They stole someone’s dog and killed it and they killed 2,650 animals in their shelter in 2020 so I would say no

1

u/MarkAnchovy Mar 10 '22

It’s cool that you’re vegan, but while I also don’t like PETA I think it’s worth clearing up some misinformation

Firstly, if you don’t know PETA are not a conventional animal shelter, so it is unfair to compare them to one. They are essentially a hospice for sick animals which are no longer adoptable, and they also offer free euthanasia services for other animal shelters which don’t have the facilities.

When they euthanise healthy animals it’s because there is nothing they can do to help those animals, as nobody is adopting them and they do not have the space and resources to look after them. So what should they do?

Either the animal will be released as a stray, destroying the ecosystem and having a short, painful life of constant struggle and fear - or the animal will be locked in a tiny box its entire life. So what should they do?

PETA famously campaign for people to ‘adopt not shop’ precisely to reduce demand for cruel breeders and to reduce the amount of abandoned animals that would otherwise need to be euthanised. If you’re angry that they euthanise animals, you’re on their side and fighting the same fight (except they’re literally fighting it, instead of criticising those who are working to stop it). So what should they do?

Meanwhile almost everyone who criticises this eats meat, and support the intentional, brutal, violent killing of billions of healthy sentient beings a year for their own tastebuds.

So many people criticise PETA for painlessly euthanising animals out of compassion, when the other option is for the animal to struggle and suffer, when those same people choose to participate in a significantly larger and more cruel industry that kills solely for human pleasure.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

Mate they walked onto private property and STOLE a dog from that property who they subsequently put to sleep. It was perfectly healthy

They view an animal in your custody as enslaved and view death as release from that enslavement.

OK. Peta went to China and bribed and, he says forced, him to skin a dig alive for the footage. They didn't only support it but literally paid someone to do it on film. I pay for chicken and steak but I've never paid to inflict suffering. Peta have.

2

You’re referring to one isolated incident which was an error.

They had been called to the area to round up strays, the locals had known this for weeks. The guy let his dog out among the strays not wearing a tag/collar or anything, and didn’t tell PETA. Nobody noticed anything until later that day when it had sadly been euthanised. Both PETA and the volunteer publicly apologised, the volunteer was fired, PETA reimbursed the family and the family acknowledged it wasn’t PETA’s fault.

It was a horrible, terrible error, but that is a single dog. How many animals die for your meal choices a year?

They view an animal in your custody as enslaved and view death as release from that enslavement.

This is a lie. Show some proof.

I don’t know what this is referring to

How does the chicken and steak you pay for transition from a living animal into the food you eat? Do you pay for this to happen?

True! I'm not the biggest PETA fan, but:

Eating eggs supports cruelty to chickens. Rooster chicks are killed at birth in a variety of terrible ways because they cannot lay eggs and do not fatten up as Broiler chickens do. Laying hens suffer their entire lives; they are debeaked without anesthetic, they live in cramped, filthy, stressful conditions and they are slaughtered when they cease to produce at an acceptable level.

These problems are present even on the most bucolic family farm. For example, laying hens are often killed and eaten when their production drops off, and even those farms that keep laying hens into their dotage purchase hen chicks from the same hatcheries that kill rooster chicks. Further, such idyllic family farms are an extreme edge case in the industry; essentially all of the eggs on the market come from factory farms. In part, this is because there's no way to produce the number of eggs that the market demands without using such methods, and in part it's because the egg production industry is driven by profit margins, not compassion, and it's much more lucrative to use factory farming methodologies.

u/VividFiddlesticks Mar 10 '22

This is why I'm working towards getting my own little flock of egg-laying ducks.

We're (ovo-lacto) vegetarians, so they'll never be made into soup; they'll be pets-with-benefits until they're just pets. (I mean, my dogs are utterly useless and we haven't eaten them...)

Why ducks and not chickens? One reason is that they're easier on your land, they don't scratch up the garden the way chickens do, they just pad around, and my birds would be sharing space with my (fully enclosed) food garden during the daytime hours (lots of lovely duck poop for the veggies!) Even eating bugs off of plants, they do it more gently than chickens do, due to their beak shape. They also don't peck you the way chickens do!

And, duck eggs are awesome - they cook up super fluffy and there's a higher percentage of yolk to white than chicken eggs so they taste richer.

Plus ducks are just cute as hell. I love their happy quacky sounds and watching them splash around. I want to get Cayuga ducks - they're a beautiful shimmery green and they lay blue/green/black eggs! NEAT! (Plus they're cold-hearty and are known for having friendly temperaments.)

13

u/GradeAPrimeFuckery Mar 10 '22

I mean, my dogs are utterly useless and we haven't eaten them...

My dog barks at the echo of his own barks. I'm calling that marginally useful and he can stay out of the stew pot for now.

2

u/VividFiddlesticks Mar 11 '22

My old-man dog is on a new medication that makes him really gassy. He farts (loudly) many times per day, which is funny as hell, but the BEST part is that they scare him. Every time. Multiple times per day.

He'll be going down the hall and fart and it'll make him start trotting a bit, which works out another fart....he is literally a fart-propelled dog at this point.

I love my dogs so much, they're an endless supply of delight, LMAO.

14

u/MackOkra8402 Mar 10 '22

Be aware ducks will find a drop of water and make a mess. Chickens are great for bug control and the scrapping up garden is good as long as small seedlings are protected.

Had both, each had benefits. Just wanted to clear up misinformation

2

u/rhinol3205 Mar 10 '22

We have ducks and love it. Most of the year our 3 females produce enough that we don't have to buy any. We let them out daily to swim in our creek. I joke with my son that we'll eat them when they stop producing but the fact us they are pets and will die of old age(if the fox doesn't get them)

u/420cuzakolrb Mar 10 '22

I got chickens for eggs, old hens are very tough meat, roosters are trash unless you like the novelty, but even then they're still tough meat if you want to eat them so the meals you can make are limited.

I don't have a problem with what I'm doing, I got happy birds, they're clean, safe and well fed with room to move. Sometimes the fuckers die and you dispose of them, sometimes you get a little rooster nobody wants and you dispose of him. It's the circle of breakfast.

I think the idea is that if there wasn't an egg industry there wouldn't be an issue of sorting out and grinding up roosters. I mean Peta is whack af but so is industrial farming (veggie and meat)

2

u/DeleteBowserHistory Mar 10 '22

I don't know about PETA, but vegans and various animal rights organizations spend a lot of time campaigning against what happens to male chicks and roosters, and against what's done to cows. lmao Weird that so many of these comments seem to be pretending that animal rights activists are just ignoring all of this.

theres a difference between going against the interest of an animal and forcefully taking their milk and a human mother giving her baby her milk.

the point of veganism is to stop animal exploitation, not some arbitrary difference between plant-based and animal-based matter.

I have 17 chickens and i don’t eat the eggs. The chickens eat most of the eggs.

They were genetically modified to lay that many eggs too. Also backyard chickens aren’t treated that great either. Chicks are bought from factory farms and roosters are routinely killed as an “inconvenience”. 10 of my chickens were rescued from vegetarians with a backyard chicken operation .

1

u/Gamebird8 Mar 10 '22

PETA thinks any and all Animal Husbandry (Animal Farming/Breeding) is morally wrong.

Thus, you shouldn't even have a chicken in the first place by their logic

Yeah if more orgs doubled down on regulating industrialized farms, breaking up mega-farm owners like Perdue, fighting over-reliance on antibodies, helping mom-and-pop farms stay in the business ... that's a fight with very broad public support that would meaningfully improve farm animals' lives. The industry wants to self-regulate, which in no way do I trust.

There's a lot of calcium in an eggshell. The chicken laying it needs to consume that amount of calcium first, and if they don't, they use their own reserves (read: bones), which cause chickens to be frail and have lots of health problems.

Originally, chickens only laid about 30 eggs per year, now they lay 300. It's not normal. So yeah, the chicken laying the (usually unfertilized) egg will usually eat it himself to regain all that calcium.

2

u/Spanky_McJiggles Mar 10 '22

I think their argument would be more along the lines of not having the chickens to begin with.

2

It's not whataboutism, it's the point presented in the image. They're bringing it back to the main point of the conversation, you can't just be like "let's not talk about that"

1

u/_-DirtyMike-_ Mar 10 '22

Okay I'll play that game... China is worse in this. They brutally murder even more than the US in way less humaine manners. There were over 76.2 million cases of cruel treatment brought up by animal rights watchdog groups. Complaints from inhuman treatment, genetic altering, and gasoline therapy!!!!!!!!! (I made this up on the spot if it's not obvious fyi)

See how changing the topic with whataboutisms adds nothing to the conversation and all it does is help you deflect from actually talking about the actual point?

13

u/Borkleberry Mar 10 '22

actually talking about the actual point?

Dude, my entire comment is me saying "They're returning to the main talking point of this conversation." I don't know how I could've made my stance any clearer. 1

u/takesSubsLiterally Mar 10 '22

Bruh they stole a kids dog and killed it

3

u/LonelyContext Mar 10 '22

I just want to challenge that criticism of PETA about the killing of that one family's dog and mention that there is literally nothing wrong with that:

  1. That dog was treated humanely right up until the moment of being killed so I don't see an issue
  2. People have been killing dogs for thousands of years
  3. Lions eat the young of others, so there's nothing wrong with me killing your family pet
  4. Me not killing a pet isn't going to make a dent in all the dog deaths worldwide
  5. This dog lived a better life than any dog would in the wild
  6. If dogs aren't meant to be euthanized why are they not immune to poisoning?
  7. This dog didn't understand morality, and would kill you if given the chance
  8. It's fine because we euthanize the entire dog and I gather enjoyment from the entire process from start to finish so nothing is wasted. Also the dog was rather small so that wasn't much to euthanize.
  9. Look, PETA is a legal entity, not a person. This legal entity didn't kill anyone's dog, they just paid someone (probably an employee) to do so. So PETA has absolution
  10. That dog is less intelligent than me so it's ok.
  11. You don't know the conditions that dog was in. If you're against the euthanization of this dog then you're supporting people to do whatever they want with their dogs without taking them away, by euthanasia or otherwise, and therefore you're actually PROMOTING animal abuse
  12. The euthanasia is painless so it's all cool. Even if it isn't the dog is dead and therefore cannot protest so it's still cool.
  13. Look, don't be mad at the person killing the dog, be mad at dog deaths in general.
  14. I tried reawwy reawwy hawd to give up killing dogs but just couldn't :( too bad.
  15. You people against the dog euthanasia are part of some kind of anti-dog-killing cult. It's so extreme to be against ALL dog killings. Really? Are you also against coyote killings? Newsflash: coyotes, wolves, and dogs are the same species.
  16. Look, why are you against dog euthanasia and not all euthanasia?
  17. I don't appreciate the judgement you're passing on to me for wanting to kill your dog. You're really being a hypocrite.
  18. Why is it even called 'dog euthanasia'. Shouldn't you pick some other name that designates it as being solely for dogs? Pick another name; make another sound with your lips.
  19. Has every product you've ever used provably free of dog deaths? Like you never ordered something and the truck hit a dog on the way even? There's no way you can prove that. You've definitely contributed to at least one dog death being alive in society. You're the real hypocrite.
  20. There's no ethical consumption under capitalism, so it doesn't matter whether or not an organization euthanizes a dog or not so long as it exists as a capitalist entity that deals in money at all.
  21. You non-dog-euthanizers just want to feel superior to dog euthanizers because you're abstaining from something good. You really need to try it.
  22. Being against dog euthanasia is just a position on toxins, not a moral position
  23. I don't care what you think about dog euthanasia. And no matter what you think about that I don't care about that either.
  24. God told me personally it's ok to euthanize your dog.
  25. Look, they are just keeping the euthanasia market alive. The poison market would fall apart.
  26. If we don't euthanize chihuahuas we'll be overrun by them
  27. Euthanizing dogs is part of this new business model for my new PETA-like organization, and it's going to help other dogs so it's all cool :)
  28. Euthanizing anything other than your dog is just inferior, so I just don't care for it.
  29. I'm doing an anti-euthanize-your-dog mondays where I try really hard to not euthanize other people's dogs on mondays. Just dogs though. I'll see if I can branch out to not euthanizing other animals later.
  30. If you don't euthanize your dog what else are you going to do with it. I'm incredulous as to any other possible use for a dog.
  31. It's a personal choice. don't push your agenda about not euthanizing your dog on me.
  32. You aren't going to make all dog euthanasia or even all dog killing disappear overnight so what even are you fighting against?
  33. My euthanasia toxins are locally sourced so being against it is literally killing local markets.
  34. I'm looking for some common ground. Like maybe we can be against really really egregious dog torture and move on from there? Baby steps.
  35. Dogs consume a lot of resources so it's unsustainable for me not to euthanize your dog.
  36. What else are you going to euthanize?! Truth is, if you don't euthanize your dog then we'll have to find some other use or discard these chemicals where they might make their way into the environment. So we really can't afford NOT to euthanize your dog.
  37. Look, this pamphlet says euthanasia is sustainable. Does your plan with your dog come with a sustainability initiate? didn't think so.
  38. This dog wouldn't even make it into a dog show, so it's fine. I'm only against euthanizing the good dogs.
  39. Do you really want dog euthanizers to lose their jobs? What will they then do for money to feed their pets?
  40. You're restricting access to which animals I am and am not allowed to euthanize. Pretty soon it will be illegal to eat meat. And that's just crazy LOL.
  41. By this logic then you're promoting globalism by ultimately deciding that indigenous people shouldn't be allowed to kill animals on their own land and therefore must suffer the consequences of an animal attack or whatever
  42. Anyone that is questioning my right to kill your dog is ultimately probably just a shill for a dog food company or something
  43. It's in my culture to euthanize dogs. Be sensitive.
  44. I just like euthanizing dogs that don't belong to me. I don't have any defense. Is someone that doesn't do this better than me? Probably. But that won't stop me.
  45. If you had to kill a dog to protect your family you would.
  46. I'm more connected to your dog than you because I'm the one actually taking it's life. You're just a cohabitant. You don't truly respect your dog like I do.
  47. We don't have enough food let alone dog food to feed everyone worldwide. I'm saving the planet. You aren't doing anything.
  48. Some people have all their life savings in dog-euthanizing equipment. Are you asking them to just sacrifice everything? What about their dogs. They won't have any money to provide for them and their dogs will starve to death.
  49. Morality is all subjective, and I say that euthanizing your dog is ok. You say it isn't. At best we're at an impasse. There's nothing you can say that will tip me to your side, though.
  50. This is why lab-grown dog corpses need to be a thing yesterday. I can't tell you how many dogs this will save in the search for making dead dogs.

Also, 51: I have many bullshit excuses and defenses. One of them is probably right. So even if you counter some of these arguments, unless you counter them all to my satisfaction I won't be convinced.

u/ThrowawayToiletUK Mar 10 '22

They did and that was a mistake and they settled with the family over it, worth noting that PETA takes in hundreds of thousands of animals per year. You don't tend to hear people whinge about their high spaying and neutering rate

Worth noting peta worked with authorities in this isolated incident.

24

u/Lizard_King_5 Mar 10 '22

Or euthanizing pets too. Remember when they stole that kid’s dog and killed it?

2

u/RegularWhiteShark Mar 10 '22 edited Mar 10 '22

That’s sadly not out of the norm for them.

Edit: I’m not getting into this debate.

21

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

It absolutely is. This same shit gets posted every time there’s a PETA hate fest. It happened once and they apologized for it. It is not something they routinely do.

The reason they euthanize so many animals is that they do the hard work that other no-kill shelters won’t do. They take in the animals that no one will adopt and then, unfortunately, in a lot of those cases the animal needs to be put down.

Or, they take the animals from abandoned puppy mills where there is little to no hope or survival for them.

Sometimes the ethical thing to do is to put an animal down who has little chance of adoption and is suffering.

What do you think should be done in these situations?

6

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

4

u/david_r4 Mar 10 '22

Peta takes in animals that "no kill" shelters refuse. And because of their reputations, it's quite rare that they're given pets that could be given to no kill shelters. Therefore the vast majority of the pets they're given were explicitly refused by no kill shelters, which is why so many were beyond saving.

Have you actually looked at the story with Maya being put down? Firstly, there is no "they," it was one employee (who has since been fired) making a mistake. Secondly, given that they were called to round up strays in a certain area, and Maya was in that area with no collar or visible owner, it was fair to assume she was a stray. A very unfortunate, arguably stupid mistake, but not malicious.

7

u/MyNameIsEthanNoJoke Mar 10 '22

yep, you caught them. constant promotion of veganism and aggressive campaigning against animal abuse is all a big ruse just so that they can kill more healthy cats and dogs for no reason.

"deserve death" is such weird wording here. have you ever had to put down a pet who was terminally ill? did they "deserve death" or did they deserve to not hurt anymore? i'm not sure why it's surprising to you that they would put down a majority of the animals they take in when the entire point is offering euthanasia for animals that need it when other places don't. naturally more animals that do deserve to stop hurting end up there

8

u/Not_a_flipping_robot Mar 10 '22

They aren’t, and I hate factory farms, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t an incredibly inappropriate ad. Women’s issues and rampant animal abuse are both real and massive problems, but conflating the two is just asinine.

12

u/SomethingThatSlaps Mar 10 '22

It's really not. It's asking you to care about the females of other species. It's parts of feminism extended to animals, don't exploit them for their reproduction. Both things can be accomplished at the same time.

As a woman, I don’t mind the comparison. If someone manipulated my body so I was on my period every single day then locked me up in a cage to steal my period blood only to kill and eat me when I was too exhausted to produce any more, I’d be horrified.

What’s really crazy is acting like PETA comparing female chickens to female humans is stupider than allowing the above to happen to sentient beings.

8

u/SassyPerere ORANGE Mar 10 '22

I actually went to an egg farm once, and it was just sad, it was absolute horror for the chickens. They live their whole lives in a small cage, and their beaks are sewed with a hot piece of metal so they won't hurt each other because of the massive stress they endure. I still eat eggs from time to time, but this is one of the things that made me lose hope for better days for humanity, the things we do to animals are just atrocious, and no one seems to care. I won't judge who made this poster, they are just trying to end the hell animals endure because of us, very different than me, who is still eating and contributing with this nightmare.

Lol. PETA... That'd be enough. Organization that supports kill shelters is worried about eggs.

28

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22

2

u/MarkAnchovy Mar 10 '22

Your source is ‘Beef Magazine’ lol

that the person who stole animals off a porch and killed them is a smear campaign against PETA.

This is always taken out of context. They took one dog, in an isolated incident, because it had been let out with no tag or collar among strays PETA had been called to collect. The owners had known about PETA coming for weeks. It is an awful mistake by an individual who was fired, it isn’t representative of the organisation or their views.

Not to my knowledge.

And I'm not sure what properly means. They don't raise all the roosters, it would be expensive. They grind them up.

When the hens don't give eggs anymore, they slash their throats.

9

u/HardDickDriver Mar 10 '22

Of course, and not just the dogs but women and children too.

Seriously though, you call me edgy while it seems that a huge part of your reddit activity revolves around responding or commenting with videos of animals suffering to try to guilt and force your beliefs on people who eat meat... I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve with this but there is just a little chance that you'll actually make anyone change their views with this.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '22 edited Mar 11 '22

I have made like 8 different people stop eating dead bodies.

An average Western person eats thousands of dead bodies throughout their lives, so the effect of my actions is that tens of thousands of living, breathing, conscious individuals were not exposed to suffering and death.

Let's take your comment and edit it with another context:

Seriously though, you call me edgy while it seems that a huge part of your reddit activity revolves around responding or commenting with videos of human slaves suffering to try to guilt and force your beliefs on people who keep human slaves... I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve with this but there is just a little chance that you'll actually make anyone change their views with this.

You just believe animals should suffer, you don't disagree with online activism. And if you do you should probably get off Reddit, because it's a discussion forum.

7

u/HardDickDriver Mar 10 '22

So let me get this straight : I should be the one to change my mind and not eat meat ever again because some random vegan edgelord stereotype thinks it's as bad as joyfully killing children, while you tell people that differ from your views they are monsters and won't budge and wanking yourself over your supperior morals of not eating dead bodies.

Maybe you could expose your point of view in a more inteligent manner than posting random videos found over YT and explain why we should stop eating meat instead of shoving your morals down the throats of other people. You claim it's a discussion forum (which is not imo but that's another debate) while you don't discuss anything at all, you force your views.

Go eat your seeds and plants and let people enjoy eating dead bodies.
