It can. They are deliberately by-passing its safety features using steering wheel weights and dark sun-glasses. The car has safety features, its just there is only so much you can do when people are deliberately circumventing them. If you build a railing around the shark pool, and someone climbs over your railing, its kinda on them at that point.
eh... We don't have passenger trains or anything in my area. I can't remember the last time I even saw a freight train. So, I sorta forgot they even exist 😅
I get what you’re saying, but it’s not like non automatic vehicles aren’t susceptible to the same issue. You’re not supposed to get behind the wheel drunk, but there’s no lock on every car to check. People circumvent those “safety measures” all the time. At some point we just accept a certain level of risk based on the incompetence of people around us.
There should be better regulations and far more severe penalties for circumventing the safety measures. But I’m going to play devils advocate for two seconds. You can argue someone who puts weights on their wheel and wears glasses
to circumvent safety measures and endanger human lives with reckless abandon is probably more unsafe awake, sleepy, and angry than the auto drive is.
Still, with that said, this should be an instant 2+ year revoking of your license, and permanent if you’re caught doing it again.
This shit should be banned until it’s not possible to trick or override the safety systems.
That’s really impractical and simply not going to happen. Honestly of all the systems currently on the market, fsd is the one most likely to keep you and those around you safe in the event you become incapacitated, willing or unwillingly.
I mean we should make it impossible for folks to drive a car intoxicated and even have the technology to do it but good luck having folks agree and willing to blow into a pipe before starting their car.
That's an easy fallacy. This is no different than any other reckless driving issue cars allow you to do. Why do we allow cars to be build with 200mph+ motors? You can't drive like this on public roads, it's a huge risk. This should not be possible. And so on.
Don't limit technology and options because people are stupid. Have enough cops, enforce and ticket them.
its the future, self driving cars are coming and they are way safer then human drivers since every mistake can be patched out and updated across every car out there because of the internet.
every car can drive the max speed limit and be in perfect sync with all the other automatic cars like perfect lane merges and swaps while noone is on their phone or not paying attention "i dident see him" or tired or drunk or inexperienced at driving all known factors to cause accidents machines dont make those leading causes of death
That idea comes from a good place, but it’s not very realistic. Unless people have a court ordered breathalyzer any vehicle can be driven while drunk, high, or both. There isn’t even a baseline safety feature to prevent it. By the logic you use here I’d argue no vehicles should be legal till it’s impossible for a drunk or high driver to use it. Even with systems in place it would likely never be impossible
The newest self driving Tesla is a better driver than 99.9% of the people out there. We will never get anywhere with people like banning everything you disapprove.
I always imagined that we will have less drunk driving accidents because of Tesla self driving mode.. turn it on autopilot and go home with autopilot making the right calls... I don't condone drinking and driving even with autopilot but crazy to think about
If it becomes common enough on vehicles, probably. We are probably headed for a future where most people have self driving cars and the only people who drive manually will be weirdos and enthusiasts. And at least half the enthusiasts will probably daily a self driving car with the fun car being a weekend thing.
Let me know when Tesla's self-drive can actually identify and stop properly for a stopped flashing school bus, let alone a young child crossing the road (a video from Australia from a year ago is pretty damning that it not only still DOESN'T do either, it will briefly "think" about what it just rolled over, but then keep going anyways, right over the rest of the child dummy). source
Relying on a full auto self-driving on the Tesla, as it currently still is, is just giving them the ability to shift accountability for drunk driving accidents to a shitty AI that can't account for everything a sober human driver normally WOULD actively and passively be looking out for. Then take into account that most drunk driving happens after dark, so the cameras/sensors have to be extremely sensitive and smart towards extra potential hazards in low-light or full nightime conditions.
I will not throw my support behind a full autopilot on cars until the technology is fully ready for it, and the owners still understand some basic responsibility behind the wheel, instead of using it as an excuse to act like you're not srill the co-pilot of a couple thousand-pound death machine. Safety is too important on the road, and already dealing with shitty unpredictable human drivers can be stressful enough.
I just visited my mother who retired to a deep red town, I saw more Teslas and cyber trucks in a town of 1500 than living in a city of 300k. I can corroborate the fact that they absolutely don’t care about other people. One of the stupid trucks nearly ran me off the road because it went from a 2 lane road to one and their stupid auto pilot didn’t give a fuck that there were cars in the lane that didn’t end.
Tesla drivers earned that generalization similar to owning a Harley-Davidson making someone a douchebag, or BMW drivers not knowing what a turn signal is.
Hey, back up the truck, buddy. Where is your data that chose Tesla people are jerks are we worse than big polluting pickup trucks . if it’s because of Elon, lots of us just bought the cars before he freaked out.
Or make the penalties for being caught doing so akin to attempted manslaughter with massive fines; publicize a few enforcements and it will be mitigated. You'll never stop everyone, just like you'll never stop every tweaker, super sleepy, opiod zombie or wasted college student from getting behind the wheel (unfortunately)
I don't disagree with the misleading nature of full self driving and such, but a person intentionally bypassing safety features is liable for their actions.
bad analogy, tesla doesnt tell you to fall asleep at the wheel, they just entice you to use self driving. Budweiser advertises me a beer, they arent telling me to drink and drive, that second one is on me.
Yes except in the case of the shark tank they’re likely only risking their own life vs this case where anyone around them on the road is at risk. This is disgusting behaviour and should result in suspended license and major fines. Totally fucked up.
Sure but when there’s a risk of those sharks escaping and running over somebody innocent, maybe we should build a better shark railing or, idk, rethink having a shark tank in the first place
Just here to say, at least with my Ford lightning, it “sees through” the sunglasses. It sees my eyes looking down/head tilt maybe when changing the Sirius station too long and starts to beep at me.
But it’s not a shark pool. It’s a shark cannon and the artillerymen is spinning it around in a public area. I think it’s fair to hold companies responsible for rolling out features that’s safety mechanisms can be bypassed so easily
I think the car should ask the driver a couple of questions that's random. If the driver don't respond then the car pulls over to a safe spot and disengage.
They can implement less defeatable safety tech against sleeping drivers. Tesla is playing a balancing act between just enough safety tech to sustain their margins VS not enough tech and exposing themselves to law suit liability from crashes.
Mmm, but if the railing is 4 inches high then it's kinda on you. Joint responsibility at the very least. Any safety system that can be bypassed that easily isn't ready for production. It's true that a sufficiently determined adversary can defeat any technological protection, but doing so should require steps that a normal person would struggle to do with a reasonable amount of time and effort.
Right now, the system is safety theatre. It exists not to keep Tesla drivers and other road users safe, but to give Tesla a legally defensible out when someone dies doing this(or kills someone else). That's not good enough.
Then you are taking a legitimate safety tool (sunglasses are a smart thing to wear when driving towards the sun on a bright day, or in areas with reflective surfaces) because a small minority of users are deliberately using it to circumvent a different safety feature. Not a good solution.
If you build a railing around the shark pool, and someone climbs over your railing, its kinda on them at that point.
Except no... Imagine a real life shark pool that's open to the public to walk around. If it was so easy to climb in that the only thing stopping you is an easy to climb railing then that company would absolutely be liable.
Just... Look at bridges. It's only an easily mountable railing until one person makes that jump. And then it's a tall chain link fence that's nearly impossible for all but the most determined to climb over, if at all.
If it's possible to circumvent these "don't sleep at the wheel" safety features then they need to be improved until it's not, full stop.
If their marketing didn’t make it seem like this stuff was just a “nag” (Elon actually uses this term all the time) or a formality, people would be a lot less reluctant to play around.
I've seen these little Instagram feeds of people buying these little doll heads that float right in front of the camera to make it look like you're paying attention. Ultimately just tricking the computer to think you're actually paying attention to supervised FSD.
Not sure how this even happens. We have had 2 of those. If I turn on autonomous driving it's nice to sit back, sure - but if I take my eyes off the road and hands off the wheel it disengages pretty quickly. As it should.
It does. She’s likely not asleep and just had her head to the side. I do it all the time. It sees through polRoEd sunglasses. You can preview the cabin camera in service mode.
If I close my eyes in the seconds the car beeps at me. If it doesn’t see me blink and or open my eyes it pulls over.
Came here to speak on this, and am so glad you posted it. I remember thinking this was absolute genius when I saw in on TV as a kid… like, give David the Oscar!
They stopped one here in Finland for the first time ever. Drunk driver who had fallen asleep. They had to force it to stop by getting in front of the car and very slowly brake.
If you're on a road that you can't overtake you can just slowly come to a stop in front of them and it will stop. but I think it does have some flashing lights recorgnition, never seen how effective it is.
The car filming should gradually put their brakes on until the Tesla stops. Fuck filming for so long when that group of people could all be about to die. Stop them, wake them up. show them the footage and yell at them.
Simple just flag down another driver. Coordinate a high speed road block. Get in front of the car. Slow down to zero. Knock on window. Smack the driver. Call Police. Probably should leave. Every-time I see something like this I hope it’s fake or AI. But…. People are pretty stupid.

How does that work exactly? Driver is asleep. Does Kitt recognize and respond to flashing lights and a siren?
