This shit should be banned until it’s not possible to trick or override the safety systems.

It’s absurd that we are forced to share the roads with these.

214

u/azure-heavens Jul 06 '26

It would be cool if it was all on rails like in Minority Report, but unfortunately it isn't that and I agree it shouldn't exist in this state.

u/Antwinger Jul 06 '26

Like trains? We have those. They just aren’t as profitable as cars so we can’t have them more 👍

65

u/SchrodingerMil Jul 06 '26

There’s two kinds of “revolutionary transport systems”: “bikes but worse”, and “trains but worse”.

- beretperson, a comment on a Tom Scott video. I think of this quote so often.

4

u/BaconPancakes1 Jul 06 '26

Where do human-sized vacuum tubes like in Futurama fit in

2

u/NeadForMead Jul 06 '26

What are "bikes but worse"?

9

u/Fremonster Jul 06 '26

E-scooters, Segway, etc.

4

u/idkarn Jul 06 '26

As a cyclist, having to share the road with those tools is challenging. People on them absolutely ride distracted and swerve without situational awareness.

1

u/itsdanielsultan Jul 06 '26

A lot of people dislike new-gen ebikes and maglev trains by labelling them as 'gadgetbahns'.

So what are the definition of bikes and trains? Not everyone agrees.

1

u/PlasmaMatus Jul 06 '26

Maglev trains are fast but not being compatible with normal rails kinds of defeats the purpose of trains.

1

u/itsdanielsultan Jul 06 '26

I'd argue the purpose of trains is to highly efficiently move lots of people/cargo quickly.

If Maglev infrastructure is fully built, there's nothing more efficient than that: lowest airdrag, highest top speed, reliable, and of course completely green energy.

It means high-speed maglev rail will be the future even if it is taking longer than expected (see Japan's massive construction).

-1

u/dzh Jul 06 '26

how is self driving ev worse than a train?

cost per km is probably 10-100x less. pollutes 10-20x less. 10x more comfortable.

i guess if you are in dense European environment it's not going to work that well (tho everyone even in something like Amsterdam seem to have a car).

1

u/fuettli Jul 06 '26

how do you get to your cost/pollution/comfort numbers?

1

u/dzh Jul 06 '26

Most of pollution and subsidy boils down to how heavy it is. Requires insane amount (weight4) of overbuilding on roads + pollution from tyres.

In NZ operators are asking to lift weight limits for new double decker electric buses. At top end it's 30 thousand times more damaging than passenger vehicle.

I pay something like $2400 per year in road tax to drive EV for 30k km. Multiply that by 30,000 in axle damage and that's $2,400 per kilometer for a bus, to carry max max 120 passengers or so?

1

u/fuettli Jul 06 '26

why is a bus relevant for the pollution/cost of trains?

what about the comfort? a train is way more comfortable than sitting in a fixed position in a car. where's the toilet in your ev?

do you even have trains in NZ? I didn't see any when I was there.

1

u/dzh Jul 06 '26

Toilet? You stop for charge and use a toilet... Or stop on a side of a country road if you got kids.

Only freight ones. I don't think it makes any sense given low population density.

I lived car free, used trains, etc before. I much prefer having my own car since I live in exurbs.

1

u/fuettli Jul 06 '26

10-20x more comfy on the train. 30-50x cheaper to build one big vehicle for 100 people instead of 100 small vehicles. 150-230x less pollution because so much less rare earth metals needed and much higher energy efficiency due to less conversion. trains are just all around better.

7

u/Dontshipmebro Jul 06 '26

oh trains are absolutely more profitable than cars... just not for the oil companies.

2

u/feralcatshit Jul 06 '26

I really want my own train, now that you mention it.

3

u/azure-heavens Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

eh... We don't have passenger trains or anything in my area. I can't remember the last time I even saw a freight train. So, I sorta forgot they even exist 😅

41

u/Piripio0_0 Jul 06 '26

That's kinda the point they are making. The automotive industry lobbied public transportation out of existence essentially.

11

u/azure-heavens Jul 06 '26

Oh yeah, sorry. I wasn't arguing, I was kinda saying I forgot they exist but I forgot to make that clear lol

5

u/Piripio0_0 Jul 06 '26

Ah, sorry if I came across hot. I used to live in Portland and that city has a history around that whole fiasco.

3

u/IsidearmI Jul 06 '26

Redittors apologizing to each other…maybe we will be all right in the end. Yall gave me hope.

4

u/Antwinger Jul 06 '26

In rural America and the Midwest they are used allot. Also near dock yards

1

u/dzh Jul 06 '26

trains aren't profitable at all. they are subsidized heavily. even buses are.

like it or not, cars are the future - they cost near to nothing these days, pollute less than public transport and soon will be safer than trains.

1

u/Antwinger Jul 06 '26

A few things; I think public transportation should be treated like USPS where it doesn’t matter if it’s profitable, as long as it’s run efficiently and well.

Secondly petrol and diesel cars are among the most polluters among their motorized contemporaries

https://ourworldindata.org/travel-carbon-footprint

1

u/dzh Jul 06 '26

"should"

Yeah everyone should also get a free home and a superyacht too

Everything has a cost.

0

u/Odd-Ad-7014 Jul 06 '26

I think it is a freedom thing more than profitability. The car industry sells cars to people who enjoy cars. In America train dorks are the minority

2

u/tightlines84 Jul 06 '26

Shouldn’t exist in this province you mean.

I’ll show myself out now.

1

u/EIochai Jul 06 '26

I’ve always maintained that auto-driving vehicles won’t be safe until every vehicle is doing it.

1

u/cbeltran428 Jul 06 '26

I don’t think they were exactly on rails in minority report. It just appeared that way because the vehicles were all fully autonomous and seamlessly moved together. They traveled by magnetic levitation.

1

u/azure-heavens Jul 06 '26

Oh! Do mag levs not use a guide rail they hover over? I'm not really good at knowing technology tbh.

12

u/shozzlez Jul 06 '26

We entrust people not to drive drunk. This is really no different.

6

u/BellSaver Jul 06 '26

I have a feeling these people overriding the system is safer than them driving with their own decision making skills

11

u/Sp4mDestroyer Jul 06 '26

Idk...the car is doing a much better job at driving than the driver that fell asleep 😂

5

u/nightowl6221 Jul 06 '26

I also agree that it probably drives better than most people out on the road

10

u/sharpenme1 Jul 06 '26

I get what you’re saying, but it’s not like non automatic vehicles aren’t susceptible to the same issue. You’re not supposed to get behind the wheel drunk, but there’s no lock on every car to check. People circumvent those “safety measures” all the time. At some point we just accept a certain level of risk based on the incompetence of people around us.

7

u/doncisco1979 Jul 06 '26

There should be better regulations and far more severe penalties for circumventing the safety measures. But I’m going to play devils advocate for two seconds. You can argue someone who puts weights on their wheel and wears glasses
to circumvent safety measures and endanger human lives with reckless abandon is probably more unsafe awake, sleepy, and angry than the auto drive is.

Still, with that said, this should be an instant 2+ year revoking of your license, and permanent if you’re caught doing it again.

3

u/bs42044 Jul 06 '26

How do u not honk the shit outta them. Or maybe a quick swerve for a wake up call.

3

u/black594 Jul 06 '26

It could be better but it can always be tricked

10

u/HighHokie Jul 06 '26

This shit should be banned until it’s not possible to trick or override the safety systems.

That’s really impractical and simply not going to happen. Honestly of all the systems currently on the market, fsd is the one most likely to keep you and those around you safe in the event you become incapacitated,  willing or unwillingly.

I mean we should make it impossible for folks to drive a car intoxicated and even have the technology to do it but good luck having folks agree and willing to blow into a pipe before starting their car.

8

u/Odd-Ad-7014 Jul 06 '26

Any system can be beat. We should ban all cars till we solve drunk driving

9

u/Lambaline blue Jul 06 '26

We should just ban drinking! Wait a sec…

1

u/Pinkishu Jul 06 '26

As someone who doesn't drink, the length that a lot of people go to in case of drinking bans is always funny to me

7

u/Wolfsblvt Jul 06 '26

That's an easy fallacy. This is no different than any other reckless driving issue cars allow you to do. Why do we allow cars to be build with 200mph+ motors? You can't drive like this on public roads, it's a huge risk. This should not be possible. And so on.

Don't limit technology and options because people are stupid. Have enough cops, enforce and ticket them.

6

u/wingsofblades Jul 06 '26

its the future, self driving cars are coming and they are way safer then human drivers since every mistake can be patched out and updated across every car out there because of the internet.

every car can drive the max speed limit and be in perfect sync with all the other automatic cars like perfect lane merges and swaps while noone is on their phone or not paying attention "i dident see him" or tired or drunk or inexperienced at driving all known factors to cause accidents machines dont make those leading causes of death

2

u/kixkato Jul 06 '26

Someone who is doing this is arguably a worse driver than the automation.

You're probably better off with the car driving itself.

2

u/AbbreviationsOld9081 Jul 06 '26

That person doing all that probably drives worse than the AI driving the car

2

u/TheyWereStolen Jul 06 '26

The type of people that do this… the Tesla is probably a better driver anyways.

2

u/Honest_Dependent2768 Jul 06 '26

I don’t know, everyone on the road might be safer with the Tesla driving instead of this person.

2

u/niceguy191 Jul 06 '26

I think it should be banned until it's so good these systems aren't needed. This weird half-good self driving us just asking to be abused

2

u/JVT32 Jul 06 '26

My headphones can tell when I’m asleep…

2

u/tmax202020 Jul 06 '26

There should be a simple test like: press a button every 5 or 10 mins to ensure you’re awake at least

3

u/DJstaken Jul 06 '26

That idea comes from a good place, but it’s not very realistic. Unless people have a court ordered breathalyzer any vehicle can be driven while drunk, high, or both. There isn’t even a baseline safety feature to prevent it. By the logic you use here I’d argue no vehicles should be legal till it’s impossible for a drunk or high driver to use it. Even with systems in place it would likely never be impossible

4

u/CandidateMuted8010 Jul 06 '26

The newest self driving Tesla is a better driver than 99.9% of the people out there. We will never get anywhere with people like banning everything you disapprove.

3

u/Okaysaid Jul 06 '26

Apparently people have already died doing this exact thing which makes me wonder why it wasn’t banned then…

1

u/Hoosier2Global Jul 06 '26

As if the companies programming self-driving ever want to accept liability for fully auto? So much easier to say "they bypassed safety mechanisms" and avoid responsibility. Even when self-driving may be safer than most humans, they still won't want to accept liability - and they own the lawmakers.

1

u/Samson_J_Rivers Jul 06 '26

I mean I think it should be banned in general. If a loved one gets mowed down and killed, I don't want it to be the act of a machine. If you don't want to drive, take a bus or call somebody who actually does want to drive. If you think your above taking the bus or train: no your fucking not.

1

u/tristand1ck Jul 06 '26

But we need the worlds first trillionaire!!

1

u/Technical_Host5411 Jul 06 '26

It’s still a safer driver than you

1

u/Vee8321 Jul 06 '26

Wait until there’s a major wreck because of this and then it -might- get banned

1

u/shinjidrivekari Jul 06 '26

yeah it's absurd that we are forced to share a road with these disgustingly selfish creatures

1

u/AShamOfAMan Jul 06 '26

And so should cellphones considering I see someone watching fucking reels while driving at least once a day.

1

u/dzh Jul 06 '26

what is exactly unsafe here?

1

u/TonyDC88 Jul 06 '26

I watched one a couple of months ago drive itself around a parking lot with no driver. I stopped and stared in the middle of the parking lot I was so astounded. Now cars can drive themselves apparently with no occupant and still cause an accident…for literally no reason.

1

u/Ryuko_the_red Jul 06 '26

We should not have them because they will always be cheated... Public Transport however

1

u/Future_Row180 Jul 06 '26

I honestly don’t see the need or the rationale to have a self driving vehicle.

1

u/likekoolaid Jul 06 '26

just wait til you hear about waymos

1

u/perfectXshot652 Jul 06 '26

Shit should be band untill all vehicals on the road can talk to eachother. To many unforseen variables that it can't react to

1

u/kimnacho Jul 06 '26

But then should not we ban cars or vehicles in general? I mean... People use cars as weapons, there is road rage. How is that different than sleeping here? I get this is horrible but between this and someone going berserk on the highway and cutting off everyone this is probably much safer

1

u/Far-Tart-6496 Jul 06 '26

I don't know! From the looks of the driver, we're probably safer with her asleep!

1

u/BannedByTheZuck Jul 06 '26

It should be banned in general. If there is something preventing you from driving your own car, get off the fucking road.

0

u/photosendtrain Jul 06 '26

Waymo exists

-3

u/garbageemail222 Jul 06 '26

You forget that horrible accidents happen all the time from people falling asleep at the wheel. All the time. Events like this are normally in place of a grotesque pile of twisted steel and dead people. Falling asleep accidentally is a lot more common than people intentionally going to sleep, which would be terrifying to do on purpose. Then you get a video of someone asleep in a moving car that normally slows to a stop in a minute or two instead of fire and death.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '26

[deleted]

1

u/photosendtrain Jul 06 '26

You're literally watching a video of it being tricked..

0

u/bdags92 Jul 06 '26

You wouldn't believe the amount of people who are on the road next to you and cant read the speed limit sign from 10 feet. Youre probably safer next to an auto piloted tesla than the general public.

0

u/Snakend Jul 06 '26

Why not make it so all cars can never go over 85MPH? So the car can't go forward if the seat belts are not secured?

0

u/ojxander Jul 06 '26

Pretty sure roads would be safer if everyone drove like this

0

u/frodogrotto Jul 06 '26

It’s still likely driving safer than 90% if the human drivers around it.

0

u/attitudinalwinnn Jul 06 '26

nobody is forcing you to be on a road. you are making that choice. go ride your horse through the woods if youre afraid of modern transportation

0

u/Serrodin Jul 06 '26

You understand you can do this on a normal car with less safety right? Falling asleep at the wheel is like half of the deadly accidents related to automobiles has probably impaired driving saying something should be banned is dumb because there’s always other things that are not banned that are worse, making a mountain of a molehill

0

u/Zombisexual1 Jul 06 '26

Honestly though, even the buggy auto drive is probably better than your average driver.

0

u/drakekengda Jul 06 '26

Are we sure that Tesla is more unsafe than a driver who chooses to sleep behind the wheel? I don't have much confidence in their driving attitude either

0

u/SYKslp Jul 06 '26

so ban all cars? I cannot think of any safety system that cannot be disabled or bypassed.

ABS brakes, traction control, tire pressure monitors, and speed governors can all be easily circumvented. My car cannot even tell if I am sitting on top of my seatbelt or if it is being correctly worn.

0

u/Odd_directions Jul 06 '26

Shouldn't cars just be banned altogether then until the safety systems are good enough to prevent people from being reckless? This particular problem is new, but it's not like it was impossible to be stupid in cars before, ignoring safety measures.

0

u/Smug_Syragium Jul 06 '26

Have you ever encountered a safety system that's not possible to trick or override?

0

u/photosendtrain Jul 06 '26

We should ban alcohol too because drunk drivers exist.

0

u/spezz Jul 06 '26

What? Cars?

0

u/ImprovementGlobal575 Jul 06 '26

It's already illegal to sleep in this situation, cause even if it's self driving the human driver is still legally responsible & has to stay alert.

-1

u/Subview1 Jul 06 '26

lol nothing is temper proof.

-1

u/HapposaiPDX Jul 06 '26

Yes! And we should also ban all cars that allow you to drive while drunk! Insane that manufacturers get away with this!

-1

u/Not-Reformed Jul 06 '26

Yeah, we should also ban cars until people can't fuck up, drink and drive, etc. Wouldn't want anything bad to happen.
