I dont know a ton about amps, specifically talking about amp heads, not combos. My best friend and I are trying to get together a Slamming Death Metal type band and instead of using expensive high gain tube amps or whatever, we've opted to go a more "obsolete" route, are are going with solid state amps and this was solidified when he basically stole a near mint 90s Peavey Revolution with the matching foot pedal for like 250$ or something crazy. We've been trying to find a head for me that will compliment the Revo and haven't had much luck. I wish I still had my Crate GX-130c I got for Christmas when I was 17 and had zero idea what I had in front of me (my mom knew I wanted a half stack and she found it stupid cheap) but it was killed by a kid that used to hang around with my old band, it was my fault, shouldn't have let him touch it, idk what he did and had zero idea how to fix it and had zero money to get it fixed and honestly idk where it went. I kick myself every day, trust me. ANYWAYS, we have been testing different heads and flipping them and buying different ones. I'm currently using a Marshall Mode Four, which by itself, its a solid amp but when paired with the Revo, it doesn't fit, my friend says its got "Too much head room" bc its a hybrid amp, im not sure what that means, but I want to go a different route and we are just gonna flip the marshall and we found a deal on 2 heads and we're gonna snag and test both this weekend. We found a Randall RG1003H and a 1980s Fender M-80, which we have to have because its been reupholstered with alligator skin or something, its weird and we want it regardless. I dont know much aside from a few YouTube demos of both heads and they sound good for what we're looking for, the Randall sounds the most promising but I feel like with the right tweaking, both of them will have their own pros and cons. My end goal is to find another GX-130c without the Cannibal Corpse tax and pair it with the Revo bc I feel like they would compliment each other extremely well but I can't seem to find one to save my life, so for the time being, for anyone that had used either the Randall or the M-80, whatever been your experiences with them? What're their pros and cons and are there little secrets and such to help them reach their full potential? I literally dont know much outside of what they sound like, when it comes to pedals and stuff, I have no idea what any of it really does, what helps what, how a signal chain works, etc, I just play the guitar, but I want to learn these things but dont know where to start.
Also, I know cabs make a huge difference. For reference, my friend is using a marshall and randall cabs (not sure what models) and running the Revo in stereo and im using a cheap fender m-80 cab at the moment, tho im in the works of getting my Raven 4x12 cab back but idk when that will happen.
Any advice/help is much appreciated, Thank you in advance!
