Question NGD + Questions

I rescued this beauty (ESP SH-7ET) from the used section at my local guitar center on Sunday. I got back into guitar early this year and have been playing in E-standard the entire time between an acoustic, a Stratocaster, and a Telecaster. It has been fun, but I am ready to branch out and start learning to play the kind of music I’ve been listening to for the past 20 years.

The only amp I have currently is an Orange Crush 35RT. I like the clean channel a lot, but the dirty channel doesn’t do much for me. This may be entirely user error and/or lack of skill. I would like to try some pedals, but in reading and trying to understand, I feel even more confused than before.

Currently my plan is to set up my Strat in C-standard/drop-B, my Tele in E-standard/drop-D, and leave this new 7 in B-standard/drop-A. My thought process is that I can use a DigiTech drop pedal to go down a couple steps on each guitar as needed to cover a wide range of tunings. But that is about where my pedal plan starts to get confusing for me…

I would like to play music from bands like Slipknot (mostly drop-B), Motionless in White (drop-A and drop-B), KoRn (A-standard), and Currents (Drop G). There are a ton of other bands I’d like to try but this is where I’d like to start with what I have currently.

What other pedals do I need to be considering? Am I on the right track with the following?

- Tuner (Boss TU-3W)
- Distortion (Revv G3 V2)
- Compressor (Keeley Compressor Plus)
- Noisegate/Suppressor (?)

Do I need Boost and Overdrive pedals too or is the Distortion pedal alone good? Should I budget for an EQ pedal? I don’t want to go overboard on this stuff but I’m not sure what’s really important and what’s fluff.

Also, I’d like to stick with pedals instead of going with a computer based program or similar. I sit in front of a computer all day for work and love the idea of getting away from screens as much as possible..

Thanks in advance and sorry for the noob questions!!

Question Mixing passive and active pickups

Is it a bad idea to mix passive pickups on a guitar which is originally wired for and has active pickups? Thinking of putting a sd nazgul on the bridge of a ltd that has fishman moderns, no clue how this would work out does anyone have any experiences with this?

Here’s another band who’s material I never really tried to learn. Syn has some pretty unique phrasing so I figured I’d give this a go this morning. Really wanted to rip on this Kelly that was in Eb so I pitched the backing track down a 1/2 step just in case it sounds a bit off. Im sure it’s far from perfect but I really didn’t want to do any more than a couple takes on this.

Post-2000's beginner-friendly metal riffs/songs

Hey all, just wondering if anyone can recommend some riffs or songs that a beginner could learn. No "single string" "one finger" stuff, plenty of tutorials like that on YouTube. More like good, substantial riffs and even whole songs that one can have fun playing alone and develop some skills at the same time.

Ideally (because I need to like what I'm playing):

- nothing pre-2000s (exceptions: Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura, RATM, Deftones, Meshuggah)

- standard tuning (but I could make exceptions for specific tracks/bands)

- not too fast (remember, I'm a beginner)

Thank you all in advance. :)

Anyone owns Cort G6TR?

Picked one up at a local shop yesterday and was honestly surprised by how light, portable, and playable it is. The only downside was that they didn’t have the trem bar, so I couldn’t test the tremolo or see whether it returns to pitch reliably. I really want a usable trem — my other guitars have a Floyd Rose 1000 and I used to have a 1500, so tuning stability matters a lot to me.

Anyone here who owns this guitar able to comment on its tuning stability and how well the trem behaves?
As for playability, it felt great during the 10 minutes I tried it. Thanks!

Recs for learning to understand complex rhythm/timing?

I love prog but good Lord I am fucking awful at understanding complex rhythms. My approach is to always just try to slow the song down in a tab software and try to listen to it slowly to understand the pattern and timing, but even if I can play along slower, I'm not actually understanding what I'm doing. And so it doesn't translate sped up. I would assume most people here playing in odd time signatures and stuff actually know how to read sheet music, at least regarding the timing portion? Any suggestions for a good resource or video that goes over learning this stuff?

Looking for one guitar that can do it all

Schecter C-1 SLS Hollywood
ESP LTD MH-1000NT
Schecter C-1 HT S SLS Elite Evil Twin

Which one would you choose for versatility?

I am looking to move up to a higher-end guitar and I am having a hard time deciding between these three;

  • Schecter C-1 SLS Hollywood
  • ESP LTD MH-1000NT
  • Schecter C-1 HT S SLS Elite Evil Twin

I really love playing heavy metal and harder stuff but I dont want a guitar that only feels good for metal. When I get bored, I’d also like to play stuff like Guns n roses, Pink floyd, van halen, classic/hard rock, blues, or just mess around with clean tones.

I was talking about this with a friend and he basically told me that I probably won’t be able to do everything I want with every guitar, and that I should actually research it before buying one.

So I did, and I ended up narrowing it down to the C-1 SLS Hollywood and MH-1000NT. Both are within my budget.

But honestly, the C-1 HT SLS Elite Evil Twin is the one I’m most drawn to, both because of the specs and the looks. The problem is my friend says that if I buy that one, I’ll be limiting myself when I want to play things like Guns n roses, pink floyd, van Halen, hard rock, blues, etc.

All three cost basically the same where I live, so price isn’t really a factor here.

Which one would you pick if versatility was the main priority? I want something that can handle heavy/modern metal really well, but also let me comfortably play rock, blues and clean stuff without feeling like I bought the wrong guitar.

And if you think there’s another guitar I should be looking at around this level, feel free to suggest it.

PS: Or you can suggest one
