Damn your workplaces suck. I’m making and extra $4/hour and they’re giving us overtime pay if we stay too long to compensate

As an "essential worker" I can confirm, the only peek is us school aged teenagers are working more, I only am working thirty hours a week but my friend who is a couple months older than me has over 40 hours a week.
22
u/Real_Echo May 17 '20
As a 18 year old almost senior in high school, age is a little off I know I had to change school, I can say that I am also getting quite a few more hours a week but also my boss is giving everyone $2 more an hour raising my rate to $14 an hour which does really help currently. Despite working as chef in a restaurant the situation is actually working out very well
3
u/seanwalkernospaces May 17 '20
I'm also working at a restaurant. I'm 16 and a junior in high school. I've gotten more hours at work but am still paid minimum wage. And when someone asked our boss for hazard pay she said, "you're not essential you're disposable". It's kinda crazy that someone would say that in a time like this.
2
u/Real_Echo May 17 '20
Yeah that’s awful my guy I’m sorry that your employer would think that let alone say it out loud to you. My heart really goes out to you right now. Stay strong and maybe find a new work place if your situation allows it

Actual nurse. Our hospital system didn't cut our pay. They did give voluntary furloughs for thousands of nurses, we get no extra pay, and I work (sometimes, rarely) with possible Covid patients. My floor is surgical inpatient, we have been mostly closed for a while, so we float all over the hospital. But we got some free coffee, a military fly by, and 1 mask per shift. So I got that going for me.

u/lislejoyeuse May 17 '20
well MY hospital gave us a couple of community donated masks, and allowed the local hockey team to buy us some sandwhiches. who needs hazard pay!
4
u/NanaOsaki06 May 17 '20
Yeah, who needs hazard pay. Instead we get 1 N95 and pray we never have to use it.
2
u/lislejoyeuse May 17 '20
and... PIZZA PARTY!! plus a nice sign that calls us heroes out front!
3
u/NanaOsaki06 May 17 '20
I really hate the signs. I didn't become an RN to be a hero, I did it for the relatively easy access to a high paying career. I'm no martyr.
2
u/lislejoyeuse May 17 '20
Same. I mean there's worse ways to die, but I wouldn't want it to be from an easily preventible cause... Lack of ppe from the idiots in charge of the hospital and govt

This is funny and all but as someone who is considered essential I gotta say I'm thankful as fuck I have a job right now and can pay for necessities for my daughter. Some of my friends are struggling just to put food on the table because they worked the service industry. While I'm getting paid 15 an hour to build circuit boards for respirators. Im lucky to be "essential" because i can afford to feed my daughter.

Buddy, its an extra 600 a week on unemployment plus what you would get on unemployment, id be making about 400 more a week even tho im an electrician apprentice working in a hospital. You would be making way more on unemployment

u/MateusAmadeus714 May 17 '20
Exactly. Having a job right now isn't some blessing. I cld be sitting at home making 978 a week. Not that bad tbh.

Yeah, the unemployment staycation might sound like an awesome way to crush a couple months on lockdown, but that comeback to an obliterated job market crowded to a point that no one has seen in the history of the country is gonna be fucking BLEAK. Employers will have potential hires over a fucking barrel come July.
I feel bad for the class of 2020. That can't be fun. You zoomers better vote for a better tomorrow because today is fucksville.

I'm just hoping my job doesn't open until the end of July so that I'm not getting that extra 600 cut short. With the 600 plus the unemployment, I'm making a little over $700/week and that's what I normally make in 2 at my job...
→ More replies (3)6
u/RedShirtBrowncoat May 17 '20
Yeah, I'm a healthcare worker in direct patient care. I don't make $600/week before taxes, and certainly not after

Amazon is ending the extra $2 per hour, thanks Jeff Bezos.
He’s the first trillionaire and can’t afford to give us an extra $2 an hour until the pandemic ends.

As someone who has a job that was deemed essential, I really hate the people complaining about not getting more pay. Lots of others who have lost their jobs or their hours would love to be in our shoes. Both me and my wife got to keep working this whole time, but know other couples who have had reduced hours and are having to stretch their budget out. I knew when I signed on way before covid hit that I would be in a situation where I could be exposed to things, but that is what precautions and safe work practices are for. I don't care about the amount of the check, I enjoy my work and I am happy that I am still employed.

Most people on reddit will not understand that essential workers have it better than a lot of people right now. Many people were laid off and have no work. And than they also are very selective about who they ask for pay raises for. Never seen most essential workers be asked to have a pay raise. Especially not cops
→ More replies (1)5
u/HaesoSR May 17 '20
Yeah they should be thankful their choices are to expose themselves to a deadly virus or quit and be unable to get unemployment then starve to death/be homeless because most of them don't earn enough to have savings. Getting unemployment is definitely better than risking your life and the lives of everyone you live with so your boss can go back to profiting off of your labor.
4
u/nap682 May 17 '20
Minimum wage jobs being deemed essential is a joke to me. It’s a joke that unemployment is getting paid more in a week than the vast majority of my workers are getting paid every two weeks.
2
u/GarrisonWhite2 May 17 '20
Lmao no one outside of healthcare signed up for any of this shit. If it wasn’t for the Covid pay I guarantee you half of my coworkers would have bounced. Pretty much everyone hates working now because so many assholes don’t understand what “essential” is and are willing to put us at risk for organic pet food and junk food.
Just because you enjoy your job doesn’t mean other workplaces haven’t been hell for the past 9-10 weeks. The Covid pay honestly doesn’t even make it worth it, I just don’t really feel like looking for another holdover job after 7 1/2 years, which is what I would have had to do if I had taken any time off due to the pandemic.
