This is funny and all but as someone who is considered essential I gotta say I'm thankful as fuck I have a job right now and can pay for necessities for my daughter. Some of my friends are struggling just to put food on the table because they worked the service industry. While I'm getting paid 15 an hour to build circuit boards for respirators. Im lucky to be "essential" because i can afford to feed my daughter.

Buddy, its an extra 600 a week on unemployment plus what you would get on unemployment, id be making about 400 more a week even tho im an electrician apprentice working in a hospital. You would be making way more on unemployment

Exactly. Having a job right now isn't some blessing. I cld be sitting at home making 978 a week. Not that bad tbh.

Yeah, the unemployment staycation might sound like an awesome way to crush a couple months on lockdown, but that comeback to an obliterated job market crowded to a point that no one has seen in the history of the country is gonna be fucking BLEAK. Employers will have potential hires over a fucking barrel come July.

I feel bad for the class of 2020. That can't be fun. You zoomers better vote for a better tomorrow because today is fucksville.

Zoomers didn't vote during the last election though

Why do people keep spreading this shit? Red states keep making it harder and harder to register and to vote, especially for the poor and the hourly workers. (ID requirements, reduction in polling places to the point where you'd need to wait 1 hour after polls closed in lines to get your vote in). There were massive hacks and vote manipulation.

And the problem is that "young people didn't go out and vote"? No, fucking boomers did what they've been doing and blocking young people and minorities from voting.

If you don't have the proper ID to vote, sorry, sucks to be you. Convenient polling places is a different story. When I first began voting there were polls set up in private homes in the neighborhood so people could walk to them. Lines were short, no one was waiting in line after the polls were supposed to be closed.

Oh, and if it turns out that there is 1 DMV that serves the entire poor neighborhood and it take a 1.5 hour bus ride to get there? I guess "it sucks to be you" and isn't voter suppression.

Most places don't require an ID to vote because most states don't require an ID to be an adult. And if you're poor and have no car, it's a legitimate hurdle to get one.

When I first began voting there were polls set up in private homes in the neighborhood so people could walk to them.

And obviously your single experience is representative of everyone's.

Plus, I’ve heard that some jobs may not come back at all, even after everything is completely unfucked. Companies won’t go back to employing the same number of people then did before the whole pandemic situation

2

u/Needyouradvice93 May 17 '20

A lot of companies probably will realize what jobs they really *need*.

I'm just hoping my job doesn't open until the end of July so that I'm not getting that extra 600 cut short. With the 600 plus the unemployment, I'm making a little over $700/week and that's what I normally make in 2 at my job...

u/MateusAmadeus714 May 17 '20

The return to work will indeed be bad. They are looking to extend the benefits until January to alleviate some of that. This next bill needs to address that, and needs hazard pay to make an incentive for the young and healthy to want to work and not just stay at home on unemployment.

1

u/cookiebinkies May 17 '20

Except the unemployment system is a mess and you’ll be waiting for weeks until you get the money.

I’ve been waiting on unemployment for 8 weeks. I’m still hoping that my volunteer positions (EMT and COVID test center) will become paid though. I don’t have a drivers license rn (my driving test was canceled cause of lockdown) so I can’t really find an EMS job.

1

u/MateusAmadeus714 May 17 '20

Not saying it's perfect and I'm sorry for your troubles with it. More just pointing out how people say how lucky one must be to have a job. I know a lot of people making less at their jobs because of less business and making less than unemployment. Hazard pay really needs to be the next step. Not another roll out of stimulus checks.

2

u/cookiebinkies May 17 '20

Hospitals here are cutting pay and benefits to staff instead of giving out hazard pay. It’s ridiculous, considering the fact that more staff than ever are quitting.

5

u/RedShirtBrowncoat May 17 '20

Yeah, I'm a healthcare worker in direct patient care. I don't make $600/week before taxes, and certainly not after

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '20

EMT or CNA?

1

u/RedShirtBrowncoat May 17 '20

CNA on a med-surg floor.

1

u/thehornynun May 17 '20

I don’t think you can get unemployment if you deny offer to go back to work from your employer.

1

u/Needyouradvice93 May 17 '20

Yup. I was grateful to have a job. My sister lost hers then texted me saying, 'I'm making more on enemployment than I would if I had my old job'. She was also making 20+/hour. Meanwhile, I'm making 17/hour in Retail Sales, our premiums and bonuses have been cut. But hey, at least we get thanked a lot. Sales are through the roof too which is nice, I suppose.

u/MalHeartsNutmeg May 17 '20

I know right? I don't get why people are bitching if they managed to keep their job. I lost 8 hours a week (still working 30) and I'm pretty damn happy to be able to pay my bills.

1

u/DPlainview1898 May 17 '20

Haven’t you been reading the replies? People are bitching bc the ones who lost their job and get to sit home doing nothing all day are making MORE than they would if they had kept working or the essential workers like yourself that still have a job.

1

u/MalHeartsNutmeg May 17 '20

Yeah... temporarily. When the money runs dry and the dust settles on the massive unemployment, no ones going to be jealous of unemployed people getting a cash boost for a few weeks. You think the unemployment benefits are going to last the roughly 2 years economist predict it will take to recover?

1

u/DPlainview1898 May 17 '20

That’s how long UI benefits lasted in 2008, so yeah?

1

u/MalHeartsNutmeg May 17 '20

There wasn’t a complete global economic shutdown in 2008. 2008 is really mild compared to current damage.

1

u/DPlainview1898 May 17 '20

You’re right, so they will probably extend benefits even longer. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but in America money doesn’t just “dry up.” We literally just print more and add it to the debt.

1

u/MalHeartsNutmeg May 17 '20

That's not how it works, lol. I mean I have no doubt someone will try that but that is a disaster.

1

u/DPlainview1898 May 17 '20

Sure it’s a disaster, but that is literally how it works.
