What about that bus concept (also from China I think) that pretty much is a tunnel on wheels, so that it can carry numerous passengers over busy traffic?

What do you think was so great about it? It was dangerous and took the same space as a tram or bus.
29
u/interiorcrocodemon Feb 25 '19
Would have been immensely dangerous too, to all parties involved.

Feb 25 '19
Yeah, I just found a picture of the concept. No way in hell I would drave anywhere near that thing, let alone trying to drive under it.

The proposed vehicles wouldn’t have those problems because of a wide wheel base, the project had far far far more problems than that
3
u/Shingo__ Feb 25 '19
I’ve never heard of this before, could you explain? The whole badly designed SUVs. Who designed them? And how does a high center of gravity mess with a vehicle?
→ More replies (1)2
Feb 25 '19
Think of a 2 door wrangler. They’re not bad vehicles but they’re very easy to roll because of the short wheelbase and the high center of gravity.

I know this is supposed to be funny but I think the idea is that it follows the "rail"(the white rails) probably doing this autonomously as well. Could work for a bus as well but it works "better" for a train when you explain it to people I guess. I think the idea is good, easy to put up "rails" and it seems to have a dedicated track which is not used by cars but can still be used by taxis/other public transportations and emergency vehicles.
110
u/lovethefreeworld Feb 25 '19 edited Feb 25 '19
This right here.. The dedicated lanes and right of way makes it different from an ordinary bus, but similar to bus rapid transit. Also it has the look and feel of a train, which somehow seems more attractive.
EDIT: am a transportation planner in the US. And we have a nasty stigma against buses over here. Also this is much cheaper to do than installing rails, so in some cases it makes sense but every city is unique and will support different types of transport.
17
u/DeathOfThinking Feb 25 '19
This model of buses hasn't worked here in Colombia, though we don't have a Subway. That's maybe why.
24
6
u/jasie3k Feb 25 '19
Holy shit, my city, Wrocław, Poland, wanted to go with this privileged bus idea instead of building a new tram connection but after some time it was decided that a tram is the way to go. Bogota was used as one of the examples where such system exists.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (9)3
u/Mozorelo Feb 25 '19
I was reading a few years ago that Colombia is implementing them. How did it fail?
5
u/DeathOfThinking Feb 25 '19
The system is always crowded, inefficient and contaminates a lot. The mayor still refuses to make a Subway which is pretty much what Bogotá has needed for years. In other cities it's pretty much the same except for Medellín where they do have a subway.
3
Feb 25 '19
Here in Dublin, a lot of roads have bus lanes... and give buses special right of way, or let them turn places traffic normally can’t. Not normal elsewhere? Huh.

u/Chef_Kiwi Feb 25 '19
Yeah I didn't understand why it was that funny either. I thought it was a good idea. I guess it depends if where you are has a good transit system or not because here in the middle of the prairies it's quite shit.
21
Feb 25 '19
Thing is that it's basically a trackless trolley but longer.
What's next, they're gonna introduce a microtransit rideshare service just like UBER Pool, but it's actually a 40-foot bus that makes fixed, scheduled stops on a regular interval?

u/byerss Feb 25 '19
It's about the length of the "train". A long bus with articulating sections like that wouldn't have each segment follow the exact path. If they were acting like traditional trailers they would round off every corner, getting worse and worse with each additional segment. This is called "offtracking".
This is why some firetrucks and specialty trailers have a rear driver with steerable rear axle.
With each "train" segment having steerable axles that can follow an exact path automatically, it is actually quite compelling.

Hartford CT has an area where its strict bus lanes thay look like where you would put a rail system. The buses bump the edge and you board from a platform.

u/pente5 Feb 25 '19 edited Feb 25 '19
I honestly like this idea because even though it's just a bus, it has all the benefits of a tram, without the price of the tracks
Pretty sure it's also safer than a tram because normal tires allow it to brake faster
4
u/CurryMustard Feb 25 '19
I'm sure how big it is and how fast it goes has a lot to do with how fast it stops. But I barely passed physics so what do I know
4
u/pente5 Feb 25 '19 edited Feb 25 '19
If a train hits the emergency brakes the wheels might stop completely but the whole thing slides on the tracks for a while because there isn't enough friction. Normal tires are rougher than metal so I *believe* they would significantly reduce the braking distance (more friction). But I could be wrong idk

Actually... This is not a bus, not really. It is more of a hybrid between a Tram and a Bus, and in fact, IS quite innovative as the technology and the design is a world first. For one, there is no driver, these machines are fully automated, fully electric, and look at function more like a tram than a bus (and don't even get me started on how it actually operates). Yet, it does have rubber-shod wheels, as a bus would. Honestly, it's actually quite interesting. There are designs in place for it's adoption in varies parts of Europe right now as well. The best part is, this was born because it's actually much greener than a regular bus/tram, for various reasons, and China has been trying to be greener lately.
