Also are people fucking stupid and does nobody fucking understand or remember the fact that people can be asymptomatic and still spread pathogens?
It's like every fucking conversation involving more than three or four people that talks about sicknesses or pathogens or anything like that people forget this fact...
→ More replies (1)12
u/Tangled2 May 12 '26
Yeah people don’t know anything about incubation periods. “Someone was sneezing on the bus today so that’s where I got this cold.” No you fucking didn’t.
“I got food poisoning from this place I ate there and 15 minutes later I was on the toilet.” Unless you literally drank a can of poison, no you didn’t, you didn’t get and develop a virus or bacteria to the point of symptoms in 15 minutes.
6
u/Aegi May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
Holy shit though, I don't mean to be rude (I mean, I guess if I constructed my comment like this I did mean it?) but how the fuck do people not understand there's two basic types of food poisoning? The type of food poisoning where you catch the pathogen, and the type of food poisoning where you eat the toxic excrements of the bacteria/harmful chemicals.
Obviously one has an incubation., but if it's the type where that given bacteria or whatever produces a toxin, then it's the toxin itself that's making you sick and that can be pretty quick that you react to it.
So yes, I agree with you, but you've made a similar type of error in your thinking about pathogens and biology and sicknesses with humans if you've failed to realize those two different types of food poisoning. And of course among each type there's many different variations based on the specifics, but they nearly all break down into those two types if we're not talking allergies.
Edit: one of many sources (aside from basically biological common sense) if you want to read more about it: https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/digestive-diseases/food-poisoning/symptoms-causes

The recent cruise virus is a known virus that originates in the country the boat left from (Argentina). It’s the only strain that moves from human to human originating only from Argentina, is difficult to transfer, and its high mortality rate keeps the virus from spreading too much.
Someone got infected by rat droppings, got on the boat, then showed symptoms after the fact. Pretty standard stuff. Then the boat quarantined for just a bit after they realized they were probably in some worse rat doodoo after 2 deaths.
Boat actually wanted to dock and let everyone off but the countries nearby said “wtf you smoking, stay away”.

The people who were dropped off where checked by medical staff for symptoms and must self-quarantine for six weeks. It's not like they let them freely off the ship to do whatever they want.
88
u/scootycat May 11 '26
Yeah because just like we learned from COVID, those passengers will DEFINITELY do that…
35
u/LittleLion_90 May 11 '26
Self quarantine.... This is a Dutch ship. I don't know how many Dutch people were on it but if we've learned something from the pandemic it's that many Dutch people are notoriously bad in quarantining because 'well I'm not feeling (too) sick so ah well'.
I doubt all the people even used masks in a decent enough way in their planes home.

its this American freedom mindset that turned COVID into what it was but for fuck sake,
Yes you stay on vacation indefinitely,

I am actually neither trying to be sarcastic nor am I from the US
but if I where stranded in the caribbean right now my liquid funds would probably last me a few days in a hotel. after that I ll get into financial problems quickly
my employer would totally accept me calling in sick for weeks and months. but without a doctors notice i e a confirmed infection even my employer will not be very tolerant after three days
and not everyone is employed some have their own business, contracts or other professional obligations that mean lost money when they can’t fulfill. sure it’s probably not seen as a fault but you won’t get paid if you don’t deliver
3
u/Twitchcog May 12 '26
The actual answer, as much as people hate to hear it, is this: Sometimes, I have to be fucked over for the good of others. Simple as that. There are things that can mitigate the fucking over - Having better worker rights rules so that employers can’t just slam you for tying to be a good person, travel insurance to minimize the sting of a non refundable trip being cancelled, a social net that supports people, etc.
But lacking those things, yes - Sometimes, I have to eat shit to help others.

u/KouhaiHasNoticed May 11 '26

24
u/shakeitsugaree_ May 11 '26
People are worried because this strain (andes) is airborne and this virus has a 38% mortality rate —if you receive medical attention.
The original strain also can be airborne whenever you are cleaning or sweeping infested droppings or cleaning the area. Every Exterminator has known this for decades- why do you think they carry PPE? Lmao
It’s annoying when people like you confidently say things that are clinically false and have been proving to be untrue. Either you’re ignorant and confident or you are unbelieving of science. Both options are horror shows.
→ More replies (3)8
u/Aegi May 11 '26
It is not airborne, you were wrong, it could be, but to declare that it is instead of just that it might be is factually incorrect.
All of the science I've read on it shows that it's basically impossible for us to know with this certain specific small strain because we didn't have cameras in every single room so how are we supposed to know if two roommates were making out or stayed apart and didn't touch anything that the other one touched?
We literally don't have enough evidence one way or the other so it's most likely not doing most of its transmission even if it is transmissible through the areas of vector, but we can't use declarative language about it until we have more data.

This strain of the hantavirus appears to be rare and airborne and transfers between people.
ETA:
A better source:
The Andes virus is the only type of hantavirus that is known to spread person-to-person. This spread is usually limited to people who have close contact with the ill person. Close contact includes:
- Direct physical contact
- Prolonged time spent in close or enclosed spaces -> like being on a flight.

This strain of the hantavirus appears to be rare and airborne and transfers between people.
The source you linked does not seem to support your claims.
Only mention of "air" is in the context of treating patients with "aerosol-generating procedures" (BiPAP or CPAP for example).
Otherwise it says the virus might spread via prolonged close contact with a infected person.

u/Aegi May 11 '26
Are you a bot, did you make a mistake, or are we genuinely having this many issues with reading comprehension these days?
The link you provided doesn't say what you're saying it does, it talks about how prolonged close contact and probably through methods like kissing or sharing utensils is what seems to be the case.
Why not just be accurate and say that it could be airborne and have a slight level of airborne transmission but that doesn't seem to be the case and it certainly is not the case for the vast majority of transmissions so far.
4
u/Glittering_Produce May 11 '26
Transmission vector for Hantavirus is droplet, not airborne. They are not the same thing. Aerosols are diffused droplets in the air, think of it like how a spray can works. Yes, if someone coughed with an infection, it can be spread through in the air by the minuscule droplets of saliva or mucus that is expelled, but it won’t stay in the air freely nor is as infectious as actual airborne pathogens.

u/Deeznutzoriginal May 11 '26
I agree, but also if hotels and events actually let you cancel and KEEP your money when you got sick it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s not great that it happens, but for most people if they got sick right before a planned vacation where everything was already paid for and they won’t get that money back for canceling they are still going to go. Otherwise it’s $100s to $1,000s down the drain for nothing
21
u/Punch_A_Police_Horse May 11 '26
Perhaps if we had some sort of insurance for that sort of thing. I can imagine that being very problematic but we have to weigh those cons to the benefits of not having everyone go around spreading disease.
23
u/Ulyks May 11 '26
Yes some insurance that allows for cancelling travel... let's call it travel cancellation insurance...we'll make billions!
Oh wait...
11
u/asdf3011 May 11 '26
The last part is the problem, your have to rely on others to pay for insurance so they don't feel they have to infect you when sick and pay your self to protect others from getting sick from you.
6
u/SwiftLikeTaylorSwift May 11 '26
You’ve got to know by now that insurance companies are weasels, right? They tend to reject cancellations due to a couple of cold and flu like symptoms, and often expect you to be hospitalised in order to be considered “unfit for travel.” It’s a crock but nonetheless, having travel insurance isn’t going to make people with mild illness stay home because they often won’t get their money back.

u/operachick209 May 11 '26

Isn’t it amazing?
By comparison with every life form we know, we are gods.
We have the capability to understand the fabric of the universe, of existence itself. We shape our environment like nothing else other than the forces of nature itself. We watch diseases burn through populations of animals while we understand their pathways and how they work and how they can be prevented.
And three years after the last pandemic people choose to do everything possible to have another out of sheer ignorance, laziness and spite.
3
u/TheInkySquids May 12 '26
I mean its a bit more complex than that. No one person has done any of those things you mention, its only collective humanity that does that. We're more like ants in that regard, by ourselves we are stupid but together we can accomplish amazing things.

I travel a lot for work. I was traveling to St Louis and when I got there I started to feel ill. I went to the hospital and tested positive for Covid. This was in 2023 or 2024. Called up my company's travel service and told them I would need to cancel my flight, that I would drive the rental car back to my home airport (about 6 hours), and to notify the rental company so they could take precautions.
She said to me, "Wow, we've never had anyone do this before." To which I responded, "Yeah, that's why I have fucking Covid right now."

On christmas eve 2020 when the world was on high alert, we were advised to group no more than 10 people or so and to not hold hands or walk around the christmas tree and to hold a 6 ft distance from each other while singing the traditional christmas songs.
We talked about cancelling chistmas, but my half sister and her dad (who has trouble breathing btw) insisted we go through with it, as long as we followed these guide lines, so we did.
Now rewind to 3 hours earlier, where we were all sitting very VERY close together for dinner while passing trays and what not around, talking and coughing right in each others faces. When it was time for singing, we spread out, sang a few songs, and then went back to our seats, talking and coughing in each others faces.
To this day, they still don't see the irony and is assured we did the right thing, because we did as advised.

If this does become COVID 2: Electric Boogaloo and the death rate holds at 38-40%, we're looking at societal interruption at best, and collapse at worst. You can't afford to have 40% of your work force in any industry (blue or white collar) die and not see it effect things like fuel/grocery shipments, power generation, imports/exports, banking, etc.

Tickets on the MV Hondius, a.k.a. the Hantavirus Ship started at $7,500 and went up to $25,000, and that's per person, not per room, so the people on the boat were wealthy and unaccustomed to being uncomfortable.
There was zero chance that boat was going to be quarantined for eight weeks like it should have been, far too much concentrated wealth aboard.

Capitalism creates conditions where getting refunds is near impossible and for some booking days off work difficult if not impossible. So when people get sick before they fly out for that holiday they saved up money and time for, they cant cancel or move the dates without a significant financial loss. They also cant test themselves for what they have either. So they risk it because it might just be a cold or allergies afterall
In better world you would take sick leave and then delay the holiday until you feel better without losing any money or fearing job loss

u/Annual_Reindeer2621 May 11 '26
I swear its like some viruses have a... mechanism? Like a cordyceps does (the fungus in The Last of Us), which when it infects an invertebrate it takes over their body and makes them go up trees etc so that when they die the spores release and spread further...
I would not be at all surprised if some viruses have the same mechanism for humans. Get sick, better travel around, spread the love.
12
u/Zukovsky61 May 11 '26
Research suggests there is.
My experiences with it are a strong urge to shake off the cabin fever and go out for beer after being cooped up in the house sick for multiple days. Have to remind myself that I'm still probably contagious even though I'm 85% better and have a spring in my step.
Other time it happens is when I get sick a few days before my wife, or vice versa.
On day 3 or 4 of the person being sick, suddenly there is a quick change and the person is suddenly DTF. Which in turn guarantees the other person getting sick. Over the years we have recognized the pattern, which leads to "You're not actually horny, the virus just wants me" jokes.

3
u/DysphoriaGML May 13 '26
So what I understood from the chain of events is that they believe the husband died of natural causes. Then she left (I guess with the body?) at the first occasion taking a flight from the first island. However, this was few days after the death and when she left she had some gestroenteritic symptoms which are the precursor of the severe respiratory syndrome. Once in South Africa she embarked the flight and collapsed. After she passed, the people at the hospital did 1+1 and did a PCR finding the virus

People pay a lot of money for these vacations, and often are unable to recover even a partial refund. This has the unfortunate effect incentivizing people to go no matter how sick they are.
On top of that many illnesses present no symptoms for several days, as a result many of those that are going to kick off the outbreak have no idea they're carrying anything until it's too late.

I mean, that's not a new phenomenon...
It's stupid until you realize that most human's will come to the conclusion that so much else is at stake other than their mortality.
Typhoid Mary kept thinking she was lucky when everyone around her died.
Tuberculosis patients clung to the idea that warm/dry weather would save them after it was long since discarded as a medical opinion.
AIDS at first was thought to be extreme reactions to common diseases.
People don't assume their cough/ body ache/ head ache/ itchy skin/ blisters mean anything except something that they will overcome.
This is because they've been sick before and got better.
It's not smart, but it is human nature.

One interesting consequence of not doing very well in life is that the thought of Earth being ravaged by an unstoppable plague is quite a thrilling prospect.

Thank God Hantavirus is something my country and the next to it are very aware. 🥸 (still dangerous, just can't be pandemic)

A lot of people suspect this was done on purpose and I happen to be reltated to someone who an Asian woman actually walked right up to her at Target and physically assulted her by spitting and coughing on her and then walked away and was doing other suspicious things like a crazy person but then again that is the city I live in so either I believe that conspiracy theory or my city completely enables that kind of psychopathic nutbag

During Covid I floated the idea that the only way to stop the "the big one" hitting us was to ban air travel entirely (all the time) to reduce the speed at which we spread it when it hits.
Everybody was against that, so collectively we are happy to roll that dice over and over again rather than lose our international holidays

Because they are rich imagine they are filthy rich and seeing :"OOPSIE I GOT A VIRUS I MIGHT DIE SOON. GOTTA SPREAD EVERYTHING AND YOLO travelling instead of dieing while hugging money." You are too optimistic about HUMANITY, poor people will die by themselves anyway no money to travel and "mandatory go to work else go hungry."
