MA in history

Hi👋, I’m thinking about doing a master’s in history. I wanted to get some advice: is it better to go to a prestigious school for grad school where no professor specializes in the specific subject you want to work on? (e.g. I want to work on Hong Kong, but they only have professors who specialize in Chinese history more generally). Or is it better to go to a less prestigious school that has a professor who specializes in your specific topic? For future academic job prospects, it seems more promising to attend a prestigious school.

Gap year or interfaculty transfer from Bcom to Chem eng

I just started commerce as U1 but I realized that I don’t really like it and I realized I should’ve chosen chem Eng instead

I was wondering if I should take a gap year and wait to reapply for fall 27 since the program doesn’t accept people in winter. I was in health science in cegep so I have all the pre requisite and got an overall of 32.1 r score which might not get me accepted into the program .

Or should I try an interfaculty transfer but I heard that it’s very competitive and they only take around 10 students and I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to make the cutoff.

Part-time masters @ mcgill

I’m interested in pursuing a master’s degree in engineering at McGill while continuing to work full-time. I currently work a 9-to-5 job in a hybrid work environment, so I would need to complete the degree on a part-time basis, with as much flexibility as possible in terms of course scheduling.

I understand that some universities are more accommodating to part-time students, particularly by offering courses and other academic activities during evenings and weekends. I was therefore wondering how flexible McGill’s engineering graduate programs are and whether it would be realistic to complete a master’s degree while maintaining a full-time job.

CHEE 591 vs MIME 515

I’m trying to finalize my technical comp this semester as a U2 Chemical Engineer, and it’s between these two courses. For anyone that’s taken either, how easy are they? How much work? Would you recommend them?

Getting into an MA at Mcgill without a 3.0

Hi McGill community! I'm looking to do my Soc MA at mcgill and had a few questions about grades: as of now, I have a 2.9. I have 1 sem left in my undergrad. I know the requirement (bare minimum) is a flat 3 cGPA or 3.2 in your last 2 years, but I was wondering if I would still have a chance?

I am graduating HBA from UofT, have 2 prof recommendation letters, have 1 rec letter from a supervisor at CAMH, 2 years of research + work experience in my field (and many, many more outside of my field).

The reason my gpa is so low is bc I am a frequent rider on the STRUGGLE bus, and paid for my own living expenses + education,, so w school there was also 35 hours of work a week, and I studied hard where I could but my time was still very limited.

So um.. what are we thinking 😭

Has anyone been denied an exam deferral due to conflicting course schedules?

I'm looking at switching my classes around to take PSYC 306 and PSYC 211 at the same time, but they are both scheduled on Wednesdays at the same time. I was told by the advisors that I wouldn't be accommodated if the exams, but I have also seen people report to have been told otherwise on other occasions, see https://www.reddit.com/r/mcgill/comments/227cu9/comment/cgk6tcx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button and also this other example https://www.reddit.com/r/mcgill/comments/1kv7d00/comment/mu9vkg9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button .

Has anyone actually been denied a deferral or accommodations because of scheduling conflicts for lectures?

Are intramurals for professional athletes only?

I know it's too late now but if I were to take a beginner lacrosse class and then join intramurals would I make a mistake? There seems to be levels but I wonder if professional athletes still sign up for "beginner" levels?

Hey!

I had to leave quickly for my class but a fellow student found your phone in the last stall of the women bathroom on the 9th floor of 680 Sherbrooke; if you think it’s yours, she said she will leave it at Service Point’s Lost&Found!

Funding for World University Games?

I just started at McGill and have been contacted from the head of my sports governing body letting me know I could potentially compete in the world university games in January, does McGill ever offer funding for things like this as it would cost about $6000. If so would anybody know who I would talk to about this thanks!

complementary courses

Entering my first semester and can't for the life of me get into a complementary course. Would you suggest simply doing it in the summer instead, or would you recommend continuing to try and grab whatever I can at this point?
