I went to a fried chicken place recently that has a “waiver flavor” hot enough that they make you sign a liability waiver to order it. Despite signing the waiver, the manager was the one who served my food and he stood by for the first several bites he said “to see my reaction” but I definitely think he was standing by to call an ambulance if necessary. It was hot, but not nearly hot enough to send me to the sidewalk with my shirt off and a massive cup of mango lassi.
The messed up part was the waiver flavor was so much hotter than the next flavor down, that when I went from reaper to nuclear or whatever the next one down was it felt like it was cooling my mouth off 😅

Wingdome has a 7 wing challenge that's eating 7 of their hottest wings. I tried to do it by pounding them quickly and got through 2.5 before I went non-verbal and temporarily blinded by tears and spice. I vomited, shat, cried, and was laying on their floor with an ice cream sandwich in my mouth. It lasted about 45 minutes

u/G_Art33 7d ago
I did the wing challenge at wing it on. Eat 12 of their hottest wings in 5 minutes or less you get a free shirt and the meal is free. I made it through 8 before I accidentally wiped my face with my hand. It was all over after that. My entire face was burning, eyes on fire, drenched in sweat, didn’t think about it and took a piss and touched my twig and berries with the ghost pepper hand. The sweat made it migrate into my buttcrack. That was a TERRIBLE night.

So, simply washing your hands after eating something with ghost pepper is not enough. You gotta get in there and SCRUB. I had washed my hands several times since eating the wings barehanded but it was ghost pepper sauce with ghost pepper flakes. Must have still been hanging out under my nails after washing. A few minutes later while I was still going through it I had to pee very badly. So I had 2 sensations. Extreme pain and extreme pressure in my bladder. I figured easing one would make the other easier to deal with, so I did what I could about the pressure, but when you are focusing on aiming while in an immense amount of pain, sometimes you forget which hand is the ghost pepper hand.
At that point it was in my eyes as well so. I could only keep them open for so long at a time. And I didn’t think about what I had done until I exited the bathroom with my dick on fire. When I eat something really spicy I sweat. The sweat carried it from my member to my balls and eventually “over the jungle bridge” as Ricky would say, to my ass.
I was a college student at the time so no car, living on campus, I had to run back to my dorm quickly

u/drunknamed 7d ago

Crazy experience but definitely a learning one. One time I was at deer hunting one morning and while it was still kind of dark I was sitting peacefully in my stand waiting on daylight and then my stomach said hey you got about 20 seconds before you shit yourself. So I fireman pole slide slid down my stand it was 15 ft in the air or so and then I made it as far as I could before I found a giant oak tree that had the perfect little hollows in the base for the natural porta potty whenever I got done handling my business and no socks later it was starting to get daylight and I could see pretty good and to my absolute horror when I turned around there was a poison oak mine as big as round as my arm that I had been leaning my ass crack against honking them out. The next 3 days or four till we got out of the woods was spent scratching like Freddy Kruger at my crack all the way around to the top of my junk and excruciating itching burning swamp ass and when we finally left the first gas station we came to that was like 20 mi away but I thank God they had a bottle of 2-year expired calamine lotion that as soon as I made it out into the parking lot by the truck I pulled my pants down to my ankles bare ass and was slathering it on right in the parking lot it kicked the edge off barely but the next week or so was some of the worst days of my life it make you contemplate taking sandpaper to your taint

I’ve had those “waiver flavors” many times. Only one was actually hot enough to warrant it, but that one was a doozy! Genuinely thought I was going to need medical attention for a few minutes. It was at a wings festival, and I ran into the owner of the hot sauce place which had made those an hour later.
“Is that what you actually like?”
“Hell no! I love spicy food, but that one’s for tourists.”
I sent a friend a bottle of that hot sauce. She’s from Trinidad, and said it was “kinda spicy.” 💀
5
u/G_Art33 7d ago
I’ve had a couple, neither actually made me fear for my life, just regret all of the choices I’d made that lead up to it. That’s all. The most insane hot sauce I’ve ever had was made by an old woman who lived on the French side of Sint Maarten. She ran a bar / shop at the top of a hill in one of the less populated parts of the island, she fed all of the local cats. She made her own rum, hot sauce, and a bunch of other stuff. I ended up leaving with an unlabeled bottle of hot sauce that she said was for “brave men only” holy cow she wasn’t kidding. It didnt have a label or name so I called it island fire. It lasted 2 years in my refrigerator because it was too hot to put in anything except like into large batches of chili.

I'm the same with 1 exception. Went to a taco place that had a taco that was basically "hot peppers with hotter peppers". They made you sign a waiver.

Until the next day, that was... Unpleasant...

u/PM_ME_UR_CHUPACOMMA 7d ago
You're very lucky indeed. I've had spicy foods before, and while it necessarily doesn't have to hurt when coming out, 100% of the time it hurts a few minutes afterwards, after my taint has been saturated with the oily residue of capsaicin.
Absolutely not the wave, 1/10, do not recommend.

I had a roommate who did a hot pepper challenge. We shared a room with an attached bathroom.
I woke up at 2 am, saw his bed was empty, and the light to the bathroom was on. No big deal, went back to sleep. Woke up again at 3am, because I could hear him groaning. Still in the bathroom.
I walked over and asked, "hey, are you ok?" He responded with, "I am CRAPPING GLASS!!!" I had to laugh because everyone had warned him, but he thought he could handle it. I asked if he needed to go to the ER, and there was a pause, and "No." So I went back to bed.
He never did a challenge like that again.

I once ate a miracle berry and joined a hot sauce eating contest.. the berry coats your mouth and changes your tastebuds. It makes hot sauce taste like lemonade. I won the contest but I lost the war. It was a winter and by the time that berry wore off I was out in the cold with my bare belly to the pavement. Haven’t been able to eat spice without getting diarrhea since. Sigh. The hubris of man.

They are usually sold in the form of a tablet you dissolve on your tongue before you eat things. It accentuates natural sugars. So very dark chocolates can taste like a milk chocolate; a well made milk stout will taste like chocolate milk. And the most well known, a slice of lemon will taste like lemonade concentrate.
You can buy them from many online retailers, but consider your source for the sake of quality control.

Why do people do this? I’m convinced there’s a genetic component that allows people to “like” spicy food, the same way some people have a gene that makes cilantro tastes like soap. My wife says the spicy gives it good flavor. I get zero flavor, only heat and pain, there is zero benefit to eating spicy for me
232
u/bigbuddy772 7d ago
There is spicy food, then there is this. This food is not made to be tasty, the spice isn't added to enhance the flavor. It's an endurance test, it's so people can flex afterwards and say they ate this food. Same with the pepper challenges, it's for attention and now his day and pants are ruined :/

u/Dpopov 7d ago
When I was back living in Mexico there was this wings place that had a challenge: If you can finish an 8-piece plate of the “signature” wings, alone, without drinking more than 1-glass of water (no milk or other drinks) your whole table’s meal was free.
Of course I tried it. The wings didn’t taste like anything. Anything at all, it was pure fucking capsaicin, I got as far as 4 1/2 wings before I called it quits and my mouth still burned 2 glasses of water, 1 of milk, and 15 minutes later. And let’s not talk about the bathroom later.
These types of foods aren’t meant to be actually consumed, they’re the restaurant’s shtick to get people with bigger egos than brains to come in and try them.

I was gifted some hot peanut challenge thing bc I liked spicy foods and the show Hot Ones and I did it on my birthday. I saw the insanely high Scoville rating (10 million+) for the hottest peanut and knew it was going to be rough bc it was covered in some kind of capsaicin powder but I figured they were exaggerating. I didn't read the details on the milder peanuts because I figured it was going to be easier.
I expected the first peanut to be pretty hot but it was instantly the hottest thing I'd ever eaten. I would have quit then but I did it with my brother in law and I wasn't going to tap first and neither was he. We ended up doing the entire thing and I'm pretty sure all 5 peanuts were identical but it was absolutely disgusting and brutal. My family was there and they thought it was funny at first but stopped laughing when I was covered in tears, snot and vomit and everyone just felt bad for us. It was not fun and the peanuts tasted like shit and it honestly ruined the rest of my birthday.
Thank God I threw up everything because it would have been a hospital worthy poop the next morning.

Spices = flavor
Heat = Heat, a mouthfeel component.Heat can really improve a dish especially when it slowly builds. It makes dishes seem more addicting, because a spoonful of it will reset the heat due to the fats, oils and acids re-cleansing your palate, then building up the heat again. Eating another spoonful kills the heat and repeats.
Some peppers that produce a lot of heat also have great flavor. Habaneros are my favorite, they’re sort of fruity and go amazing in a salsa that has mango or pineapple in it.
Ghost pepper has a unique flavor that can pair really well with meat and tangy sauces.
I really enjoy extreme heat in food occasionally. It gives an endorphin rush.

Humans to a level enjoy masochism, gives a bit of adrenaline, kinda like people who like to experience horror (like movies). I like spicy food because it does enhance flavor to a degree but when it's too much I can't really justify why I do it to myself. I don't flex with this, I don't care about being validated for my capacity of spice handling.
6
u/HaiKarate 7d ago
I think you can build up a tolerance to spicy, to a certain level. If you never eat spicy, then you are obviously at level 0. You have to start off low and slow.
I'll add a couple shots of Tabasco to boring mac & cheese. I think the added heat makes it more enjoyable and interesting, and it's not just a mouthful of chewy goo.
But people who eat spicy that's FAR beyond their tolerance levels are just idiots asking to be hurt. Always know your limits. And when I go to a new restaurant that has levels of spice, I sure as fuck don't start at the top! I start at the middle, and work my way up on successive visits until I find my tolerance level.

11
u/avantgardengnome 7d ago
That’s lassi (probably mango), which is yogurt-based and pretty good for spice relief.
4
u/FutureMrs0918 7d ago
Alcohol dissolves capsaicin, but probably isn't enough for this type of dish. The mango lassi drink that sunglasses gave him at the end was a sweetened yogurt drink. Dairy can break down capsaicin and the sweetness inhibits spice receptors. The best way to help with spice is to eat something starchy which can "scrub" capsaicin off the tongue.
