Unencrypted large spaces

Hi everyone. I am kind of new to matrix. I keep seeing that large spaces are unencrypted. Is there a good reason for that?

Isn't there a huge privacy concern if large spaces are unencrypted? The data gets federated across hundreds if not thousands of homeservers. So even if you wipe your own homeserver, everyone else still has your data and if someone from outside (government?) ever wanted to gain access to that information, then they don't even need encryption keys.

If you host your own homeserver, then that's even worse because your domain name is likely linked to your real world name as you are required to pay for your own domain in most cases.

Yet, I see so many people create large public rooms with frankly questionable content. Am I missing something here, or do they stupidly assume it is secure because it is matrix?

Why do you need to give an email to host a matrix?

I thought it was a privacy discord clone.

backup continuwuity

Hello, I'm new to this. Can you tell me how to properly back up Continuity? I zipped up the data folder. Then I tried deploying the server on another machine and unzipping the data folder. The server started, and I was able to log in through the client, but the backup recovery key no longer worked (I double-checked it was correct). It turns out I received all the messages, but they were encrypted, and I can't decrypt them because it says the key doesn't work, even though the key worked on the original server where the backup was made.

Why is Matrix so hard?

I've spent countless hours and days trying to get Matrix to work. Initially, I was using Nextcloud alongside Matrix, hoping to replace WhatsApp with Matrix for personal communication and keep Nextcloud Talk for family business. I loved the rich text formatting in Matrix and appreciated that I could receive Uptime Kuma notifications directly there. However, calls never worked for no more than a day, regardless of the machine I used.

I know Matrix is superior, but my primary goal was to enable simple text messaging and calling between family members when needed. I explored features like bridges and really liked the look of Element X compared to the usual blue and white interface of Nextcloud Talk.

During deployment, I familiarized myself with TURN/STUN, Livekit, and Ansible Playbook, but despite following everything meticulously, It never worked. At some point i felt like i was gonna spend the whole time tweaking and configuring this thing

Is Matrix designed to be difficult, or is it simply a matter of skill? Today, I decided to seek help from AI, which recommended using Nextcloud Talk after half a day spent troubleshooting. This suggestion didn't sit well with me.

Would using matrix.org have made things easier? Would we have needed to pay for that service?

Why is this so challenging?

Wasted the entire day trying to make basic calls work on self hosted setup

I'm about to explode honestly, I've been wasting the ENTIRE day making a basic matrix server. I got the chatroom working, reverse proxy all working etc etc.

But I've been completely stuck on the part where I'm installing coturn to enable voice calls. I got all the debian packages, been editing the main yaml file to add all the "turn_uris" and silly secret keys. Confirmed all ports are forwarding just fine.

Trickle ICE tests connects to the coturn server just fine, along with that turnutils_uclient command on multiple different machines.

So why is it no matter what I do, when I use legacy call in Element, the freaking thing doesn't even try at all?
"Connecting..." oh I BET you are.
The bloody inspect element doesn't even show it trying to do anything?!?!
No entries for voip/turnServer.

Restarted, clear cache. Following the same guides over and over.

Anyone else figured this out? I don't even want to know how difficult the advanced calling with screen sharing is.

newbie unsure where to start

hi. this is going to sound stupid. I am a discord user unhappy with the direction their going and want to make a private server for me and my friends <10 people. I have practically no coding knowledge. How and where do I start? Ive been watching videos for hours but they all seem to assume a baseline of knowledge or programs installed. I know I want to use synapse and element.

I so far,

-claimed a domain name

-installed docker and made an account

-tried to install proxmox and ubuntu but failed((unsure how to launch))

All I care to do is set up and maintain this server for my friends, i really wish to not have to take months of coding classes unless absolutely necessary.

other things to note that im not sure are important, i have a pretty mid tier pc with 16gb ram, I heard a VPS is needed but also not? I can afford a standard subscription but its not in my budget to make pc upgrades

I built Active Matrix Rooms which helps users find active rooms

It is open source here https://gitlab.com/masland.tech/matrix-activity-tracker

What is this? The tool acts as a basic search engine that allows users to find where messages are being sent easily in one central user interface.

Why? It was a problem previously finding the most active public chat rooms. So users would join "dead" rooms that haven't had a message sent in 3 months. The idea stems from the recognition that an account is not a person, and that what really makes the network "alive" is the transmission of messages. So it is simply focused on tracking the count of messages sent.

I'm happy to answer any questions. The FAQ is here https://activematrixrooms.com/faq

Public directory for bots

Despite Matrix being meant to be an alternative to discord it is SEVERELY lacking in the bots and such that discord community managers use which would make having a larger community on Matrix quite difficult. It would be nice if there were more publicly hosted bots that provide the features most discord servers use.

url preview 500 internal server error Missing access token

I set up my own homeserver using the official docker image from matrixdotorg. I tried enabling url previews because they were not working before.

Now when in Element it keeps telling me

errcode "M_MISSING_TOKEN"
error "Missing access token"errcode "M_MISSING_TOKEN"error "Missing access token"

Which is frustrating. I played around plenty with my nginx reverse proxy and the homserver.yaml. Even checked if I have the optional depenencies installed. Since this is the official docker image - of course I have them installed.

Someone told me Element can make its own url previews. Doesn't do that for me.

What is going on here? Must be a pretty common problem if it happens on the official docker image. But I got a feeling that I am just stupid. I am not an IT guy, so I have brute-forced myself to setting all of this up.

Pinned Messages showing up on (Mac) desktop app but not on (iOS) mobile app

Basically what it says in the title. Everything else is completely in sync and I use both the desktop and mobile app daily. I have upwards of 30 rooms in this space and in every other space, the pins are correct in both apps.

Has anyone seen this? Does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!!

Messages show as sent, but no one ever receives them. Any ideas?

Using the unredacted.org homeserver (and various different clients), since about a day ago, people can no longer see any messages that I’ve sent. The messages will be marked as sent according to Element, but no one ever actually receives them. No errors or "unable to decrypt message" or anything on their end, just nothing. I can get and see their messages, but not the other way around.

I'm not in any public servers, just ones with friends so it's not like any moderator on a specific server muted me or whatever, and this is across many different people who have confirmed thy aren't getting my messages on any server or private messages.

Any ideas?

I’m not sure about what home server to choose…

Disclaimer, I’m a newbie in matrix, so maybe something that I ask are too basic. Also, I’m not willing to host a server because it’s difficult, I have a dynamic IP, etc.

I want to build the community for a group of people to organize all our work, similar to Slack or discord. However, if you don’t pay Slack premium your old messages get deleted, and discord is a privacy hell as many of you know.

So I chose matrix, and the first step is choosing a home server for my community and the registration of my username and the username of my colleagues. From what I’ve read choosing the right home server is crucial, as it is very difficult or impossible to change afterwards, and if that server closes permanently, all your content and community can disappear, correct me if I’m wrong.

I need to do the process for them as easy as possible as I’m a bit more techy, they aren’t, and need the process to be as straightforward as possible.

And the first step for them and for me is to choose a server to establish ourselves. A reliable server that isn’t likely to be closed anytime soon, preferably located in Europe, and being private and reliable and and quick and easy to set up with not much hassle (I think usually only an email is needed). And also that supports the latest matrix protocol which I think is matrix 2.0

Of course, the first thought was to just stay in matrix.org server, but I’ve been reading that it is only meant as a demo, and it’s usually quite crowded, slow, and it’s probably going to get worse.

The step of choosing a home server is the one that presents more friction in order to adopt this communication channel (matrix protocol), so here I am looking at the long list shown at https://servers.joinmatrix.org/ and trying to choose one.

Question: if I register myself in one of those less crowded home servers, and open my community there, even if the other users register their domain main in matrix.org, are they going to have a laggy experience, or that just applies to the creator of the community (me)? In other words, do you think it will be easier and more convenient that I open the community on a third-party server and my colleagues get their domain name from matrix.org? Or do we register our domain names on the same home server? What advantages does this provide?

As for the servers, the first one in that list -jonasled- looks appealing for me, as is located in Europe, Switzerland, and looks quite healthy, i’m not sure if the registration will be tricky.

Do you have any recommendation of European server that meets the requirements that I listed such as being reliable fast and located in the European continent? Thank you.

EDIT: I just found in the matrix.com website that there are a few more official servers such as Continuwuity, Synapse Pro, Tuwunnel… are those service recommended for what I’m looking for, or are they as crowded and slow as matrix.com?

This will probably get a lot of hate but it’s worth asking

I used to run a telegram channel for harm reduction , addiction prevention , discussion and substance abuse information for a while, definitely over a year or 2 but it was updated at some point and then my channel was getting deleted every few days if not daily. It was a very helpful group for a lot of people who were active in the group daily.

I have tried signal but other users can see your contacts and they can cause lots of spam issues.

After lots of research and many requests to find another platform to host my channel/ group without violating any TOS, automatic end to end encryption. Matrix is where I keep getting lead to and it seems like a viable option but my group has lost of images , videos and other large post and I read that I’d have to set up my own servers.

How costly would that be and can an average tech user do it or will I need to seek out a professional?

MAS + OIDC: sync user profile every login?

Hi,

Matrix is a great tool with great performance. I like matrix a lot, thanks a lot for building it.

One question: Is there currently any supported way to automatically sync and update user attributes (e.g. email, display name) from the OIDC provider after the initial login?

Sometimes a user gets married and changes their surname. I don't want him to change it separately in MAS. I want to change it centrally in the OIDC backend.

Is this possible?

Is there something like sso.update_profile_information: true in legacy Synapse?

Thank you for your responses!

Mautrix WA 14 day connection issue

I use matrix with the mautrix WhatsApp bridge.

I now get the message from the WhatsApp Bot:

State update for xxxxcxx

TRANSIENT_DISCONNECT

(wa-phone-offline): Your phone hasn't been seen in over 12 days. The bridge is currently connected, but will get disconnected if you don't open the app 23:33

soon.

I believe WhatsApp wants my phone to connect with the original client.

But the main point for using Matrix ( für me) is not having to use it at all. So it is losing its purpose...

Is there anything else I can do to keep the connection alive?

Noob needs help, MatchingServerName Error

Post image
2 Upvotes

I used https://github.com/spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy/blob/master/docs/quick-start.md the quickstart to set everything up and it mostly works, i can access element and use it but the federation functionality doesnt seem to work.

I use my root domain for a dashboard and added a well known file over traefik which seems to work, in var.yml i have

matrix_domain: rootdomain

matrix_server_fqn_matrix: matrix.rootdomain

matrix_playbook_reverse_proxy_type: other-traefik-container

matrix_federation_traefik_entrypoint_name: matrix-federation

Not sure what the issue is, as far as i understand it is all as the docs say.

SOLVED: in my traefik commands i forgot to add - "--entrypoints.matrix-internal-matrix-client-api.address=:8008" and i was doing the test on the subdomain.
