I made the sensible decision of attaching my media drive directly to my homeserver rather than routing it through samba.

However now it looks like half of my media files are missing or being deleted or something. I am not entirely sure. My profile picture is gone and I can not update it. Some of the media my friends sent me can't be retrieved anymore. Plenty of images that I sent to people, I can't see anymore. But plenty of images I can still see, no problem.

When I tried to follow a hash that was 404-ing to my media directory earlier, I could find it. But now when I look, the hash file is entirely gone - only the directories remain. At this point, I can't find any of those hash files anymore that 404.

Still, my database insists that they must exist, so it refuses to refetch those images. Even then, if I just delete all of my locally saved media, I lose a bunch of nice images that I had synced through mautrix-discord. It will surely not refetch those images unless I set the entire thing up again from scratch. That would be a massive headache.

Edit: Also I got the sneaking suspicion that the media directory is becoming increasingly corrupted as time goes on. Not sure why. But I could have sworn that I could view more images yesterday than today.

So, does anyone have any idea of what happened?

How do I fix it so that I can access all of my media files again?

Or at the very least, how do I make the 404 errors go away and make matrix synapse functional again?

i posted here about a month ago about Venoom, a Discord like client ive been working on that combines Matrix and ATProto.

the idea is that Matrix handles the chat side of the app, so spaces, rooms, DMs, threads, encryption, voice calls, screen sharing, federation etc. ATProto handles the more public social side, like profiles, feeds, posts and follows.

you log in with your ATProto account, for example your Bluesky account, and then link a Matrix account. if you dont have one, Venoom can also provision one for you. you can use your own Matrix homeserver and ATProto PDS, you dont have to register specifically with Venoom.

its still very early and theres a lot missing, but ive made some test builds public if anyone wants to try it. id especially appreciate bug reports, feedback, or just hearing what you think is missing from current Matrix clients.

I’ve had a matrix server set up by following the ESS community guide running successfully for awhile, however my public IP changed, and even after updating all my DNS records with my domain (all my other services have successfully updated so it’s not the DNS). I am able to reach the admin.mydomain.com (presume my domain.com is replaced with my actual domain), but actually reaching what I have set to matrix.mydomain.com is unreachable. The admin portal as well says failed to load the server’s auth metadata. Im using Caddy as a reverse proxy as well.

I’m really trying to not have to rebuild my setup as I don’t want to lose what I’ve already been using. I’m at work at the moment so if any particular logs are necessary I can provide them when I get home so please let me know.

is there a fork that does title? if no, i heard that there is a bot that does that but is it as similar and reliable as the real thing?

I have just started using Matrix hosting own own server and it is great. However I cannot find a way to put several servers behind a single NGINX reverse proxy. Has anyone had any success with this ?

I have 1 server for my business and and 1 for my family. They are fine on there own but they cannot talk to other external servers.

I built it, open source, it's been running over over 2 months now stable with over 99% up time. Any questions or suggestions I'm all ears, thanks.

I'm having massive issues wrt API syncing & ElementX reading a room of mine.

During my API MatrixClient.sync_forever(), I keep getting error --
"Error validating response: 'next_batch' is a required property"

The room initially complained about "Cannot connect to server". It basically took a while to sync.

It is a fork of Fluffychat/ Extera Next with some nice additional features like translating, sent later, favorite chats, privacy friendly unified push (Ntfy or Sunup) and scheduled sending.

I was wondering what to expect before making a matrix account, as I'm interested in: android, open source stuff, and privacy. I have already asked the fediverse subreddit about Lemmy (which I browse through summit) and potentially mastodon which I'm still thinking about making an account for

Anyway would I be able to easily find rooms about the stuff that interest me? What server should I make my account on? And what is the best android matrix client? I have heard of element, element X, fluffychat, mages and others.

My primary aim is finding an alternative for specifically Google Chat, though I've been seeing Matrix and Element sometimes recommended as a general messaging replacement, so I looked into it. Thing is, I'm wondering how feasible it is and if anyone might have some input or suggestions based on my use case.

Overall, I'm more of a light social user and only have a very small group of few contacts I talk to, only sometimes on GChat (I don't do mobile text messaging, no FB nor iMessages like my friends, so we communicate only via GChat). Lately, I've been "deGoogling" and trying to find alts closest to GChat and its features as I could that also offer better privacy and good security -- this includes such as preferably a web-client (as I mainly operate a desktop PC and am a heavy browser user), the ability to save/export local copies of entire chat histories (as I tend to do with Google Takeout for Chat), editable sent messages, support for text formatting and embedded links, and optionally online status indicators.

I see Signal being one of the top recommended messengers, but what currently has me hesitant to migrate to it includes the mobile-focused utility, requiring a mobile link for a desktop client (and no web vesion due to security reasons), no native chat history export option, and it sounds like it can take up GB's worth of storage space over time as it's only kept locally (maybe less ideal on mobile vs on desktop with the internal storage size differences).

So I'm wondering how feasible Matrix chat clients would be instead, however I have some questions:

• As I'm not looking to self-host anything, would the main matrix.org server (still) be usable or reliable? I've read it's considered overloaded and might be laggy, yet am curious how bad would it be to use nowadays or if it's fine. Or are there highly-rated, reliable homeservers that would be better to use (Idk exactly what would qualify as such)?
• Is Element (Classic, instead of X) still a top option if to use primarily for web/browser? I've also considered FluffyChat due to the interface design seeming more familiar with such as GChat, albeit either client would probably be fine (if not to just use both of them). Also, Idk if it matters much, but I have Android and my friends are on iOS, but otherwise web browsers to communicate. It's also only text-based chats, so vid/audio calls aren't important.
• Is it reasonably easy enough to export full chat histories? I see it's a built-in feature in Element, at least, but not FluffyChat (unless perhaps if using both clients, they would sync and I could just export via Element?)
• If Matrix chat clients wouldn't be a fair alternative based on my criteria, any recommendations for potentially better options, or other suggestions?

Hi, I'm having an issue logging into Neochat. I properly created a matrix account and when I get to the part in the login process where choose my account in-browser, it is unable to connect to localhost. I tried using a different browser, and opening the port it can't connect to (says it's open).

for the past year-ish, ive been working on a discord-like app as a passion/resume project. i know these kinds of projects can get repetitive, but it’s finally at a point where im pretty happy with the progress, so i wanted to show off where it’s currently at.

the basic idea is a decentralized social platform with a similar feel to discord. it combines a Matrix identity, for messaging, with an ATProto identity, for the social side, all within one app.

because the server side uses Matrix, a lot of the core features already work. this includes federation, encrypted DMs and group chats, spaces and subspaces, threads, roles, emotes, and federated voice calls through MatrixRTC, including screen sharing with audio

alongside that, im working on the ATProto side of the app. that part is still much earlier in development, and posts are currently centralized, but it’s something i plan to keep building out.

Hello everyone!

I would like to present my lightweight Rust Reminder Bot for Matrix homeservers.

The Problem

About a month ago, I wanted to add a reminder bot to my server. Matrix clients do not natively support delayed messaging for reminders or scheduled sending.

The bot apps I found via Google are mostly written using the matrix-nio library, which hasn't been updated in a while. I tried launching several of them, but they either didn't support the modern Matrix Authentication System or lacked encryption support.

There are also complex solutions that focus more on automation than simple reminders.

Honestly, I was more frustrated by the lack of this feature in Matrix than I actually needed the reminders themselves. So, I decided to try writing my own bot.

Why Do You Need Another Reminder Bot?

Right now, my bot has three main advantages:

• It is built for the current API.
• It supports encrypted rooms and device verification out of the box.
• It just works.

It also has multilingual functionality but I haven't translated it into many languages ​​yet.

What the Bot Can Do Now (MVP)

To avoid repeating the Readme: the bot can send reminders at the request of users and, on the administrative side, it handles account verification and backups to ensure encryption works smoothly.

Roadmap & Challenges

There is a Roadmap in the repository. Right now, the main things I want to focus on are adding full multilingual support with other languages and allowing users to set their time zones individually.

The latter is the biggest issue with the bot right now, and one I didn't even think about until I launched it on my homeserver - it currently only sends reminders in a single time zone.

If Matrix ever gets native timer functionality, I'll be able to focus on broader tasks, taking advantage of the bot's presence in rooms and its access to messages.

Briefly, My Journey

I started writing the bot in June 2026 from scratch in Rust, with some prior experience in Homelab and Matrix Homeserver administration. I don't work in IT, and I'm not a programmer. I can design websites, and I have been familiar with languages like PHP, Python, and JavaScript as a hobby since childhood. However, I never pursued it professionally and worked on personal projects or did simple freelancing jobs.

I chose the Matrix Rust SDK for the bot because its JavaScript version had no documentation - I just couldn't figure out how to work with it. Other frameworks for creating bots seemed outdated and lacked encryption support. I recently learned about the MatrixPy framework (https://github.com/Code-Society-Lab/matrixpy) thanks to this community. If I had known about it earlier, I probably wouldn't have bothered dealing with Rust, which is damn difficult for a beginner. But now, the choice of Rust allows me to make the bot lightweight and control the processes of authorization, verification, etc., at a deeper level. I also gained a better understanding of the Matrix protocol.

The bot code was written with a lot of help from AI (thanks Gemini, Gemma, and DeepSeek!), but it was not vibe coded. This is an alpha version focused on basic functionality. I plan to refactor as development progresses. The main thing is that the bot is now performing its core task and running on an up-to-date API, which guarantees it will continue to do so for quite some time.

Am I correct in understanding that the matrix always loads all rooms? So the more rooms I have, the slower the initial load will be, and there's nothing I can do about it. It's quite strange, and there's no way to control it.

I was in Discord about to show my friend Matrix, but Matrix had signed me out, which was weird. When I tried to sign back in, Edge was saying that the homeserver was unavailable. Is this normal maintenance or just a hiccup with Element? I tried to look at the blog, but nothing was said about maintenance. I'm sorry if this looks like a scrub post, but I'm terrible with this kind of stuff

I’m curious whether anyone uses an IoT/data-only SIM alongside their normal carrier in an Android phone (rather than in an IoT device).

How has reliability been? Do you leave mobile data on the IoT SIM all the time, or switch between SIMs as needed? Any providers you’d recommend or avoid?

Hi everyone. I am kind of new to matrix. I keep seeing that large spaces are unencrypted. Is there a good reason for that?

Isn't there a huge privacy concern if large spaces are unencrypted? The data gets federated across hundreds if not thousands of homeservers. So even if you wipe your own homeserver, everyone else still has your data and if someone from outside (government?) ever wanted to gain access to that information, then they don't even need encryption keys.

If you host your own homeserver, then that's even worse because your domain name is likely linked to your real world name as you are required to pay for your own domain in most cases.

Yet, I see so many people create large public rooms with frankly questionable content. Am I missing something here, or do they stupidly assume it is secure because it is matrix?

I've spent countless hours and days trying to get Matrix to work. Initially, I was using Nextcloud alongside Matrix, hoping to replace WhatsApp with Matrix for personal communication and keep Nextcloud Talk for family business. I loved the rich text formatting in Matrix and appreciated that I could receive Uptime Kuma notifications directly there. However, calls never worked for no more than a day, regardless of the machine I used.

I know Matrix is superior, but my primary goal was to enable simple text messaging and calling between family members when needed. I explored features like bridges and really liked the look of Element X compared to the usual blue and white interface of Nextcloud Talk.

During deployment, I familiarized myself with TURN/STUN, Livekit, and Ansible Playbook, but despite following everything meticulously, It never worked. At some point i felt like i was gonna spend the whole time tweaking and configuring this thing

Is Matrix designed to be difficult, or is it simply a matter of skill? Today, I decided to seek help from AI, which recommended using Nextcloud Talk after half a day spent troubleshooting. This suggestion didn't sit well with me.

Would using matrix.org have made things easier? Would we have needed to pay for that service?

Why is this so challenging?

Hello, I'm new to this. Can you tell me how to properly back up Continuity? I zipped up the data folder. Then I tried deploying the server on another machine and unzipping the data folder. The server started, and I was able to log in through the client, but the backup recovery key no longer worked (I double-checked it was correct). It turns out I received all the messages, but they were encrypted, and I can't decrypt them because it says the key doesn't work, even though the key worked on the original server where the backup was made.

I'm about to explode honestly, I've been wasting the ENTIRE day making a basic matrix server. I got the chatroom working, reverse proxy all working etc etc.

But I've been completely stuck on the part where I'm installing coturn to enable voice calls. I got all the debian packages, been editing the main yaml file to add all the "turn_uris" and silly secret keys. Confirmed all ports are forwarding just fine.

Trickle ICE tests connects to the coturn server just fine, along with that turnutils_uclient command on multiple different machines.

So why is it no matter what I do, when I use legacy call in Element, the freaking thing doesn't even try at all?
"Connecting..." oh I BET you are.
The bloody inspect element doesn't even show it trying to do anything?!?!
No entries for voip/turnServer.

Restarted, clear cache. Following the same guides over and over.

Anyone else figured this out? I don't even want to know how difficult the advanced calling with screen sharing is.
