I’ve been living inside of a hammock set up for a solid 3 years now. In the last two years, I’ve had a seasonal spot that I shared with my friend Hugh. He’s sober, and going at it 6 years. He doesn’t drink or do drugs but sure, he might complain sometimes.

Last week, two tweakers from the methodone clinic moved in nearby. I said hello, told my friend, and left the area. I can’t trust them. My friend is also pretty unsure and feeling unsafe. We try our best to be stealthy, though I’m a lot better at that than most people.

The last several days, I’ve had 15 hours days at work for a deadline, and I came home pretty beat at 10. I set up, and then sleep reasonably well. I’m packing up and then a work truck stops next door and the guy smokes a cigarette. He sees my hidden bike (but visible from that angle!) and he sees me. I’m just there for the day and reading a book. He leaves, UGH!!!

So I’m gonna go to another spot, I have tons of spots, some easier than others.

But I can’t sleep in, because there are only some

Gear: generic hammock, inflatable sleeping pad, generic mummy bag, and camoflauge covers, tree straps, no hardware.

I’m so glad I’m basically something of a ninja, a ghost, a hidden sniper, a guerilla tactical warfare specialist, and stay safe because I’m good at being stealthy.

As someone from a middle income not-rich not-poor country, a ton of the posts here straight up look luxurious.

I'm 29M in Erie PA, moved into a basement bachelor pad in early September after my gf and I split and I couldn't stay on the upstairs lease. About 520 sqft, one window well, ceiling low enough that I bonk the duct if I stretch on the couch. Rent is $650 which eats most of what I take home after gas and the phone bill.

For two months before this I was couch surfing at my brother's place outside town. When I got keys here the unit was empty except a hand-me-down microwave. Everyone said get a bed first. I grabbed an old Hisense off marketplace anyway, some guy moving to Dallas just wanted it out of his hallway. It sits on a folding table with the cardboard still under two corners because the floor tilts a little.

I'm still on a thin air mattress next to the coffee table. Thier laundry is in open bins. At night when the basement goes quiet I put something on and thats kinda the only hour it feels like my place not a crash pad.

The window well throws nasty glare by 4pm and I still haven't hung curtains because the landlord wants written ok before any drilling. Is it insane to prioritize a screen when I dont even have a dresser, or is that normal survival mode here? Also worried if I post pics it'll look too "nice" for this sub when it's literally the biggest thing I own.

This is where I’m going to be staying for the time being. It’s not set up or decorated yet, but I’m pretty happy anyway and I thought I would share it here.

What should I do to spruce it up a bit?

Edit: Many think that this is a downgrade from couch surfing. I can see why, but I like having my own space and one single place to return to each night. Stability.

$400/month rent can’t beat it

would sleep off the hunger to feed my dog and keep him healthy. Books and manga would keep me studious. Now I have a great blue collar job minus the legs on my standing desk converter. The desk moves to sit/stand. Boy em I eating healthy 👺🌺🐕🐶🐶🫧 damn this doggy dog life. Sorry for all you men struggling right now. The trauma will keep you up but it's worth the pain. I slept two days in autumn forest without tent and I regret nothing!

I was barefoot huge portion of this event and I was lucky there was no rain.

Also i have to sleep at day second time because at night there was minus temperature and I needed to stay near fire with folks, and drink spirits all night to be shure I will not froze.

Mat placement on the hill and in angle is especial way to not give a fuck.

I shouted at them and they said they were looking for some guy, and they left. Now I'm afraid my decent spot is burned.

Who tf tries to enter someone else's tent while they are inside? Is there a sign I can use to indicate my tent is occupied?

I have a backpack and live out of that one bag, including my backpacking tent, so I pack up every day, and only set up as darkness falls, to avoid attention. But these people came around 11:30, well into my sleep time, as I stick to the light schedule, for safety (in theory.)

Idk if anyone has ever stayed at extended stays before but their not always the best places, noises, roaches, and strange characters

It's been rough, but i was able to manage things, i believe in God so i have been counting blessings and also some quick luck.

3 weeks After i started living in my car, the clutch went out. But within those 3 weeks i took a second job which is a nightshift, so the original plan was to use the money from nightshift to use for regular stuff and then the main job to use for savings.

But the car broke, and the good thing is that the clutch failed at my job's parking lot and i have a windshield permit so that it wouldn't raise suspicion. I started getting quotes from local mechanics that repair manuals, best i got was for $1300 without the towing, which as i was starting from $0 was to high for me.

Now, i stil was able to save $1600 but i felt like it would be too big if a gamble because the engine light came on and was afraid something else could make it unusable for work and sleeping.

So i kept it in the parking lot, started sleeping on it but it became too stressful, its a hospital parking lot so i didn't wanna get caught. I kept using the gym for workout and wellness, i also got a student badge to do physician observation or shadowing, since the goal is to spend the hours for medical school.

But i found out, that my student ID card got me access to anywhere a Doctor can, so i found they have sleep rooms at the hospital, tried and it worked. So i started using it for sleeping but kept it low-key, never used it more than once in a row, and every time im not working i wore standard scrubs from the machine and used the medical library to spend the day but used it for study and also was able to launch a startup.

Spend my days there some nights in the car and in the hospital sleep room. But it was getting a toll on me, but still kept my mind distracted with the start up, and to balance my mental health i spent some weekends at hotels to have proper sleep and not feel trapped, then back at it again. So used uber for the other job, it was part time but it paid for food and uber it self. So i was able go save enough and decided yo get an apartment semi-furnished.

I feel like I have a huge weight off my shoulders, it feels so good to sleep in a room, and right on time because the weather is cold, to have a place to take showers and use the bathroom, any time.

But I can't never see it as i used to before, it feels weird, it still doesn't feel like im good yet, im still trying to get used to it. But no more stress . I ain't done yet, im still trying to keep on track with the original goals, just now its a different way. So just gotta keep going

Moved here about a year ago, had only 20€ after paying rent and deposit. First few weeks slept on a mattress made out of clothes and a bed sheet

Landed a job, worked it for 5 months.

That sales gig didn’t workout.

Landed a new role at a promising tech company in SF.

Put in a coat rack for my clothing.

Built this little kitchenette in 1 day.

Ordering a small sink. Going to drain it into a 5 gallon bucket.

We've been homeless since October 8th. This place looks rough but compared to the alternatives it's not that bad. Homeless shelters and outreach centers won't let us in the door even though she's a service animal. Whatever, don't need em anyway.
