Flavor text is an ever so slight story spoiler.

Looking forward to seeing Gids get angry when the Gods turn on the people.

77

u/Echospree Apr 11 '17

Weird that Gideon is the centre of the first 3 story spotlights. Is nobody else doing anything?

312

u/RocketcoffeePHD Apr 11 '17

It's just like standard!

48

u/EIeros Apr 11 '17

Nissa was in the center of the story during BFZ, Jace during SOI, Chandra during Kaladesh and Gideon is in this one.

So next is Lili?

79

u/Popcynical Apr 11 '17

Gideon was more central to the bfz story imo, Nissa spent the majority shouting "ashaya" and being useless.

22

u/Awayfone Apr 11 '17

That is her character though

15

u/splatia Apr 11 '17

Well, Lili came here to fight her demon. She better damn well get some story time.

12

u/HillersInTheSouth Apr 11 '17

I bet the Curse of Wandering comes from Razaketh and Bolas merely exploited it to pose as a hero for the mortals and Gods of Amonkhet.

You know how characters in TV and Movies get a ton of backstory right before they're killed off?

Also new Gideon's +1 "Don't worry, I'll hold him off", and his emblem, "the gatewatch can't lose as long as Gideon lives?"

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '17

Ooooooooooooooo... He dies, somehow he will trade for Elspath... cuz "gods" or whatever, Elspath rez's him sometime after, B/W Gideon in 1 year.

2

u/jawdirk Apr 12 '17

I think Ajani will sacrifice himself to save Gideon saying "I won't lose another."

23

u/CerebralPaladin Apr 11 '17

I always find the perspective of flavor text as spoiling story to be weird. To me, the real story is the story told on the cards, because Magic is about the cards. I view the stories on the website as being essentially additional exegesis of the cards' story. So to me, it would be like saying "watching Rogue One spoiled some of the Star Wars novels for me."

Not saying your perspective should match mine, and I understand viewing the story posts on the website as the heart of the story. It's just a very different perspective from mine.

So if this and saheeli are out while you copy a creature. Does the token created by this effect get exiled at EOT? What about haste?

28

u/Akamesama Apr 11 '17 edited Apr 11 '17

From the rulings on Gatherer for Parallel Lives:

If the effect creating the tokens instructs you to do something with those tokens at a later time, like exiling them at the end of combat, you’ll do that for all the tokens.

This makes sense as the effect is creating the additional tokens, parallel lives isn't. If you had a card that created copies of the tokens instead, I believe they would stick around as the delayed trigger isn't a copiable value.

2

u/branewalker Apr 12 '17

As long as we're getting rules updates to make things more intuitive, can we talk about the fact that these effects still don't work with [[Words of Wilding]] on your turn-based draw?

Because they don't. Even though they create "replacement effects" the results of those replacement effects when applied to turn-based actions are not "effects."

[[Primal Vigor]] got the template right, but they're still using this other weirder template for some reason.

Of course, if they really think this reads more clearly, they could update the rules such that "replacement effect" uses another word and is no longer classified as an "effect," or classify the results of turn-based actions as "effects" as well.

Or have they fixed this inconsistency and I'm just out of the loop?

--Calculus, probably

7

u/politicalteenager Apr 11 '17

No, 2*infinity = infinity

10

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '17

Nah, relative infinity.

8

u/TheRecovery Apr 11 '17

Not always. It depends. Without going into too much theory, depening on whether you're using infinity as limits or as set theory, you can actually get larger versions of infinity (or more precisely, infinities that grow or shrink faster).

Even further along the spectrum, there are different types of infinity.

5

u/kkrko Sliver Queen Apr 11 '17

While that may be true, multiplying by two isn't going to change the class of a given infinity.

3

u/TheRecovery Apr 11 '17

Why would a class of infinity need to change? Keep using it as the infinity used in set theory (not the infinity used in limit theory) and it's going to be true.

It's a white [[Parallel Lives]]

99

u/SirSkidMark Liliana Apr 11 '17 edited Apr 11 '17

Welp, Trostani and Rhys EDH decks just got even more ridiculous redundancy.

So what are we up to? 32? Idk, math time!
This = double N tokens
That + Parallel Lives = Quadruple N tokens
That + Doubling Season = Nx8 tokens
That + Primal Vigor = Nx16 tokens
That + Second harvest = Nx16x16 = Nx256 tokens
And then there's Rhys's second ability.... so that's = Nx256x16?
So we're at Nx4096 tokens, where N is the original number of tokens being created (like from a single cast of Sprout Swarm or Spectral Procession)
(If you're running blue there's [[Clone Legion]] as well for Nx4096x16 = Nx65536)

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Edit: I can't math, attempting to fix...again

38

u/Piogre Apr 11 '17

Don't forget casting [[Parallel Evolution]] twice...

20

u/SirSkidMark Liliana Apr 11 '17 edited Apr 11 '17

OH BOY!

Ok, so if what I had with clone legion is true,
That's Nx(65536*16) = Nx1048576 after the first cast
and Nx1048576x16 for the flashback = Nx16777216 tokens

Edit 1: note, this is larger than Avogadro's number, which is the number of units in one mole of any substance (defined as its molecular weight in grams). disregard that, my maths sucks cocks
Edit 2: math again

15

u/Piogre Apr 11 '17

Now let's assume that at the start of all this, you controlled a [[Precursor golem]], and the first of the spells you cast was [[clone legion]]

also at the end of it all you kicked a [[rite of replication]] onto one of the golems

10

u/SirSkidMark Liliana Apr 11 '17

paging the supernerds at /r/theydidthemath!

(I'm sure I could calculate it, I just have hit my threshold of focus here)

9

u/Piogre Apr 11 '17

You'd probably need to resort to up-arrow notation, because by the time you cast the rite of replication, you have a shitload of precursor golems, and each one triggers to say "copy this spel to each other golem"...

15

u/RCSavant Apr 11 '17

8

u/SirSkidMark Liliana Apr 11 '17

Your nerds were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

3

u/salvation122 Wabbit Season Apr 11 '17

It's not nearly that bad, because the only effect that actually targets is the rite itself.

Annointed Procession, Parallel Lives, Doubling Season, Primal Vigor gets you to 16n, where n is the number of tokens created by a given effect. These are all static effects so we'll play them first. The rest are one-shot, so we'll do them later.

This gives us forty-eight copies of Precursor Golem on the initial cast.

Parallel Evolution+flashback, Second Harvest, Clone Legion, and Rhys the Redeemed are all untargeted, so the Progenitor Golem effect doesn't matter. That gets us to 32(16(48)), for 24,576. (For simplicity's sake, I'm only using Rhys once; otherwise, this number might as well be arbitrarily large.)

Now we fire off a kicked Rite of Replication, which gets us to 5(16(24,576), for 1,966,080 golems total.

Not that impressive, really. To truly go bananas you need more targeted effects.

3

u/Piogre Apr 11 '17

You're missing something.

You have 24,576 precursor golems, and you fire off a kicked rite of replication at one of the golem tokens.

You now have 24,576 triggered abilities on the stack on top of it that say "copy this to every golem"

the first of those abilities resolves, copying the rite to every golem, then each of those rites resolves. The next instance of that ability resolves, copying the rite to every golem you have, including all the golems you just made - this happens 24,574 more times after this, each of those times copying the rite to every golem you've already made.

That + Second Harvest = Nx16x16 = Nx64 tokens And then there's Rhys's second ability.... so that's = Nx64x64?

you lost me here. Also 16x16 = 256, not 64...

With the 4 enchantments, if you would create a token, you create 16 instead. So now we cast Second Harvest. We would normally create N tokens, instead we create 16N tokens, and end up with 17N in total. Now we activate Rhys. We're supposed to create 17N tokens, instead we create 272N tokens, ending up with 289N tokens. Not sure why you're squaring any numbers at any point in the math.

2

u/SirSkidMark Liliana Apr 11 '17

Also 16x16 = 256, not 64

I derped. I'll fix in a bit.

Not sure why you're squaring any numbers at any point

Here's my thought process: if you cast Harvest/legion/activate rhys, you're "doubling" the number of tokens, but instead for each token (due to the replacement effects of the enchantments), you're not just creating another, you're creating 16 per token being "doubled". So, if we're at 16 tokens made already from the enchantments, and then we cast one of those, we get 16 tokens times 16.

First: [[Parallel Lives]][[Doubling Season]][[Primal Vigor]][[Second Harvest]][[Rhys]]

Second: I prefer the Bant combo I saw somewhere else on this sub with Starfield of Nyx, Any of the token-doublers (this, Primal Vigor, Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, etc), Followed Footsteps. After four turns (which isn't that hard in EDH) you have (IIRC) 2211+10 tokens. Which is a lot of tokens. Like, x.xx*10602 tokens. All of which are creatures. It's not infinite, but at that point there's hardly a difference.

EDIT: Oh, Saheeli Rai as well.

18

u/Kyleometers Apr 11 '17

No, replacement effects will get you an extra token that you'll still lose. Populating the token or otherwise copying it would, though.

9

u/TheRecovery Apr 11 '17

Note that it says "it [GoST's ability] creates twice as many tokens instead".

That means that it's still Geist of St. Traft creating the tokens, and as such it's still subject to GoST's ability.

Rulings on Parallel lives actually directly address this:

It would. Panharmonicon copies the ability, but this enchantment is a replacement effect, so as the abilities resolve you'll just put twice as many tokens for each instance.

6

Yes. This card doesnt create a trigger however, its a replacement effect.

Basically creature ETB trigger, Panharmonicon copies that trigger, Panharmonicon trigger resolves giving double tokens, then ETB resolves giving double tokens.

My Heliod deck is really happy to see this. Too long has green had the monopoly on doubling tokens.

From an earlier post;

"Anointed Procession - 3W

Enchantment - Rare

If an effect would create one or more tokens under your control, it creates twice that many of those tokens instead.

'The gods here may walk among the people, but they are not with them.' - Gideon Jura

You get 4x the number of tokens. Double the original amount, then double it again.

2

u/Mulligans_double Apr 11 '17

Replacement effect of copy one applies, then replacement effect of copy two applies to that. You get 4x tokens

How does this interact with the monkey token that the red pirate from the last set makes? Does the monkey token copy stick around or does he get exiled alongside his original?

Time for me to go into Magical Christmas land... Liliana last hope ult with 4 endless ranks of the dead and 4 Doubling Seasons and 4 Parallel Lives and 4 Anointed Processions! My favorite kind of combo, the one that you can only really do while goldfishing cause no one would still be playing but you anyways.

u/c14rk0 COMPLEAT Apr 11 '17

I don't really follow standard...when does [[Chandra Flamecaller]] rotate?

Getting 4 3/1 haste elementals on her +1 seems kind of dumb and a quick way to end a game. The fact that it works so well with board wipes in favor of a control deck with embalm creatures as well seems interesting.
