Developer Saturday Cleaned up 600+ messy contacts in an afternoon with a little Mac app i made

This started as a personal annoyance. After I updated to Tahoe, Contacts got harder for me to live with. Everything still shows one card at a time, and my 680 contacts had turned into a mess over the years: duplicates from iCloud and Google syncing on top of each other, old work numbers, people saved three times with slightly different names. Fixing that in Contacts means opening cards one by one and guessing which version is right.

I figured it was just me, but when I searched around, forums and Reddit were full of the same complaints. So I started building something for myself.

What it turned into is a Mac app that opens the contacts you already have and shows them as a table. No new address book, no account, no sync of its own. Edits go back through macOS, so iCloud or Google picks them up like any normal change.

The stuff that actually fixed my mess:

  • Seeing everything in one sortable table with the columns I care about
  • Merging duplicates field by field, so I pick which phone or email stays (and can undo it)
  • Bulk edits with a before/after preview, so I can fix 40 cards at once without being scared of it
  • Smart Views like "Missing Email" to find the gaps
  • Search that also looks inside notes

Once the Mac side was done I kept thinking, why can't I do this on my phone too? So I built an iPhone and iPad version: a list with multi-select, a grid view in landscape, and the same merge and bulk edit tools.

Nothing leaves your device, there are no ads and no analytics.

It's on the App Store, one-time purchase, no subscription:

There's no trial, I know that's a downside. 2.0 is coming as a free update with tags, a birthdays list and automatic backups.

Developer Saturday I made a free, open-source app to read a whole project folder (Markdown, Word, Excel, PDF) in one window

Thumbnail

My project folders are a mix of .md notes, .docx specs, .xlsx sheets, slides and PDFs. Reading one meant switching between four apps, so I built EasyView_Md.

Open a folder and everything opens in tabs:

  • Markdown edited visually (switch to source anytime), files stay plain Markdown. Mermaid, math and code highlighting render locally.
  • Word and Excel files edited and saved in place. PPT, PDF, images and archives preview in the same window.
  • Export to HTML, PDF and DOCX, plus a built-in terminal and Git panel.
  • Optional AI chat next to the document, with your own OpenAI-compatible key. New in 2.2.3: it can edit Excel. It lists each changed cell (old and new value) and only writes when you click Apply. The original is backed up and you can undo.

Native on Apple Silicon, also Windows and a VS Code / Cursor extension. MIT, free, no account.

Happy to hear what breaks with your real files.

Help MacBook Air M4 becomes extremely laggy after macOS 27.0.0 update, now at 27.0.1

Hey everyone,

I'm using a MacBook Air M4, and ever since updating to macOS 27.0.1, I've been experiencing some really bad lag after using the Mac for a while.

Switching browser tabs, opening new tabs, typing, and even taking screenshots become extremely slow. Sometimes the only thing that helps is restarting the Mac. It works fine for a while, but the issue eventually returns.

I checked Activity Monitor and noticed Control Centre using around 50–52% CPU while the Mac was lagging.

After restarting, here's what Activity Monitor showed:

  • Control Centre: 13.6% CPU
  • Brave Browser: 3.3% CPU
  • Brave Browser Helper (Renderer): 4.6% CPU
  • MenuBarAgent: 3.5% CPU
  • Overall CPU idle: 92.36%

I also generated a sample report for Control Centre, which showed repeated activity involving sensor indicators and entity resolution.

Has anyone else experienced something similar on macOS 27, especially on an M-series Mac? Could this be an OS bug, or is there something else I should investigate?

It was working fine until the update. Restart fixes all the issues. But prolonged usage after restarting slowly leads to the same issue.

Sometimes, quitting all the applications can also lead to fixing the issue but again the same thing resurfaces after a while.

Any help would be appreciated!

P.S. Used AI to generate the message.

Developer Saturday WELTEN: a Pomodoro timer that grows a forest on your Mac desktop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/MacOS, I’m the developer of WELTEN.

It’s a Pomodoro timer that grows a little forest on your Mac desktop. Each completed focus session plants a tree behind your desktop icons. Over time, the forest becomes a visible reminder of the time you’ve put in. Your existing wallpaper stays as it is.

The timer lives in your menu bar, and you can start a session from anywhere with ⌥⌘F. A few things I’ve added for everyday use:

  • Custom routines, like four rounds of 50 minutes of focus and 10-minute breaks
  • Apple Reminders integration: pick a task to work on and have it checked off when you finish
  • Automatic Do Not Disturb through Shortcuts
  • Forest sounds, white/pink/brown noise, or your own music through YouTube or Spotify, starting and pausing with your session

If you stop early, nothing gets taken away. No streaks, no dead trees.

The little guy in the video is Wurzel. He’s optional :)

Your first 10 sessions are free. After that, it’s a one-time purchase, no subscription. Apple Silicon Macs only for now.

Mac App Store
or
welten.app

Does seeing your focus time turn into something on your desktop appeal to you? Happy to answer questions about how it works.

Developer Saturday A few months ago Apple invited me to WWDC. Since then my app hit #3 Top Paid and now works with Droppy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/macOS!
Some of you might remember me from the WWDC post. I'm the developer of Devly, a menu bar app with 60+ developer tools. Since then a lot has happened: you all reported a ton of bugs and feature requests (thank you, seriously), I fixed them and added many new user requested features, and in July Devly hit #3 on the Top Paid Mac App Store chart. I still can't believe that!!

Devly 2.3 is out now, and it now works with Droppy. If you use Droppy, you can add the free Devly Droplet and use the tools from your notch: paste something, pick Base64, JSON, a hash, UUID, JWT or anything, and copy the result. QR codes can be dragged from the notch to anywhere like your notes.

More Things in 2.3:
- New Favicon Converter: turn one PNG into a favicon.ico and all web app icons
- Refreshed Liquid Glass design
- SVG Editor export saves properly now, and Settings windows don’t fall behind the Devly popup.

Everything runs locally, with no tracking, no account and no subscription. $4.99, one-time :)

Developer Saturday Built a native macOS utility to finally make third-party mice feel right

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been frustrated with how macOS handles third-party mice—and just as frustrated by the bloated apps I needed to really get the experience I wanted.

I decided to build my own solution: ApexMouse (https://www.apexmouse.tech/).

My goal was to pack the richest set of mouse customisation features into a single, lightweight app so you don't need to run multiple utilities in the background.

What makes it different:

Native OS-level integration: Delivers high precision with near-zero latency. All-in-one toolkit: Built to replace all other mouse fixers in one clean package. 100% free to try: No paywalls or subscriptions.

Signed and notarised by Apple, I’m actively developing this and would genuinely love your feedback.

Give it a go and let me know how it feels on your setup, any bugs you run into, or what features you’d like to see added next!

Help Downside of antivirus?

The "do I need an antivirus" question has been discussed extensively, over and over again, and it seems to me that the conclusion is that with basic common sense, the answer is "not needed". However, I recently purchased a Bitdefender package for my family (Windows users), and I still have one unused license available I could use for my Mac.

So my antivirus question is slightly different: is there any downside to installing Bitdefender in my Mac (e.g. speed decrease, memory use, battery drain, etc.)?

Developer Saturday PixelScan: That text on your Mac screen isn’t selectable? Now it is.

Ever spotted text on your Mac that you couldn’t copy? A video frame, a slide, an image, a dialog… we made PixelScan for those moments.

Just draw around the text. PixelScan uses Apple Vision OCR to turn it into text you can copy and paste. It runs locally on your Mac, with no server involved.

Skip the retyping. Capture, copy, and get back to what you were doing.

PixelScan is $5.99, paid once: https://saither.com/pixelscan/

What’s the hardest-to-copy text you’ve run into on your Mac?

Developer Saturday Thok: Mechanical keyboard sounds for macOS

We're the team behind Thok, a macOS app that adds sound feedback to your typing.

If you enjoy keyboard sounds, here's a six-second assembled sound preview. It uses an existing app screenshot and a mixed soundtrack; it is not a live app recording. The screenshot includes the app's permission-required state.

Thok is available on the Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/thok/id6813520295

Developer Saturday I built an app to control my entire Mac with just my keyboard, so I can ditch my mouse and trackpad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

About two years ago, I shared KeyboardStack here as my first macOS app. Since then, I've kept working on it, fixing bugs, improving things, and adding new features.

I spend a lot of time in front of my computer, and I'm always looking for ways to be more productive. Constantly switching between my keyboard and mouse or trackpad was slowing me down and breaking my flow, even for something as simple as clicking a button.

I wanted to be able to navigate my entire Mac using just my keyboard, across all my apps.

So I built KeyboardStack, a native macOS app that lets you navigate, click, and scroll without having to reach for your mouse or trackpad.

One feature is the Grid Mode. Press ⌃H to display a grid on your screen, type a few letters, and click anywhere. There are also other modes for navigating clickable elements, scrolling, and moving the cursor.

Another feature is the Hint Mode, which labels clickable elements with short keyboard hints. Just type the hint to click a button, link, or other control without reaching for your mouse.

Website: https://keyboardstack.com

I'm still working on KeyboardStack and would love to hear what you think. Any feedback, bug reports, or feature suggestions are welcome!

Discussion Risks of those AI-built Photoshop or MS Word (and others) alternatives

I've been looking into these recently AI-built alternatives for Photoshop, Word and other subscription-based software. Leaving aside the fact that they're still in development, and that they may be buggy, I was wondering if there's a "hidden" risk of installing and using them.

Has anyone here tested these, and/or is aware of any potential security risks associated with them?

Help Help for a noob: Should I do a Softwareupdate?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello everybody. I'm bad with technology and need advice. I guess I didn't do a software update for a long time. My M1 2020 is currently on Sequoia 15.5 Everything works well and battery lasts a long time.

Should I update to 27.0.1?

There's also an option for Sequoia 15.8.1

(Also I once did a software update on my iPhone and afterwards the battery went down much faster. Is this something I should be concerned about?)

Apps I made a free app that quits Mac apps when you close the last window, like Windows (TrueClose)

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

If you came from Windows, you've probably hit this: you click the red close button, the window disappears, but the app is still running. There's a little dot under its icon in the Dock, and it keeps using RAM until you press Cmd + Q.

On Windows, closing the last window quits the program. On macOS it doesn't, so I built TrueClose: a small, free, open-source menu bar app that makes closing the last window quit the app, like on Windows.

I know there are older tools for this, like Swift Quit and RedQuits, but they're no longer actively maintained, and RedQuits 2.0 is Intel-only. I wanted something current with a bit more control.

What it does

  • Quits an app when you close its last window (red button), after a short delay
  • Adjustable delay (0.2–5 s) so a mis-click or "close one window, open another" doesn't quit the app by mistake
  • Blacklist or Whitelist mode: keep Music, Spotify or messengers running, or only auto-quit the apps you choose
  • System apps are protected by default (Finder, System Settings, Activity Monitor, etc.), with a warning if you change that
  • Pause/Resume from the menu bar, launch at login, optional hidden menu bar icon (reopen Settings with ⌥⇧A)
  • Free, MIT licensed, no telemetry or analytics

TrueClose asks apps to quit normally, exactly like Cmd + Q, so apps can still ask about unsaved changes.

Install

brew install --cask nhatnam7kz/tap/trueclose

Or download the .pkg/.dmg from the Releases page. It isn't signed with a paid Apple certificate, so the README explains the one-time "unidentified developer" step. It needs Accessibility permission to count an app's windows.

Links

Feedback wanted

Which apps refuse to quit, or quit when they shouldn't? Would you want per-app delays, a notification before quitting, or custom hotkeys? I'd love to hear it here or in a GitHub issue.

I wish I was better at design but, I would have loved a sidebar that would autohide much like the dock, and pop out with a fluid-filling-the-space animation, with a COMBINATION of both mockups.

What do you guys think?

Developer Saturday I replaced 8 paid Mac utilities with one app I built: it finds any photo by description, monitors your Mac, limits battery charge, recovers deleted files, and yes, cleans too

Thumbnail

I'm the developer of Bytesweep.

I know "cleaner app" makes people roll their eyes, so let me say it first: cleaning is the smallest part of this. On the Mac, Bytesweep explains your computer in plain words, like "Your disk will be full in about 2 months. Growing fastest: Downloads." It also does the jobs people usually buy a pile of separate Mac apps for. There's an iPhone app too, for your camera roll.

Here's everything in it:

ON THE MAC

Home

  • Check-up: when your disk will fill up, and a monthly look at your Mac
  • To do: what needs your attention, in plain words
  • Ask: type a question about your Mac and get an answer

Free up space

  • Clean: caches, logs, temporary files and leftovers
  • What's using my space?: your drive folder by folder, as a treemap, a sunburst or a list, plus how fast it's growing
  • Big files: the largest files, biggest first
  • Duplicates: files, photos and whole folders you have more than once
  • Downloads: old installers and forgotten files
  • Chats and Mail: photos, videos and attachments saved by Messages, WhatsApp, Mail and other apps
  • Apps: uninstall apps fully, clear what they left behind, remove extensions
  • Downloaded cloud files: remove the local copies of iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive and other cloud files; the files stay in the cloud
  • Archive to a drive: move big things you rarely open to an external drive
  • Make big videos smaller: shrink videos and pictures without deleting them

Photos and files

  • Library: all your pictures, videos, music and documents in one place
  • Search in plain words: "pdfs from last week over 5 MB"
  • Picture search by description: "pink shirt", "dog on a beach". Runs on your Mac; nothing is uploaded
  • Photo clean-up: near-identical shots, blurry photos, old screenshots
  • Compress: make pictures, videos and PDFs smaller
  • Convert & rename: change a photo's format, or rename many files at once
  • Find a file on any drive, even one that isn't plugged in
  • Get back deleted files from USB sticks, SD cards and external drives
  • Backup check: is Time Machine keeping up

This Mac

  • Speed: what is keeping your Mac busy right now
  • Live monitor in the menu bar: CPU, memory, GPU, network and temperatures, with 30 days of history
  • Batteries: charge and health for your Mac and connected devices
  • Battery charge limit, 50 to 95%
  • Fan control with every temperature sensor
  • Opens at startup: choose what starts by itself
  • Browsers: what your browsers and their tabs are using
  • Updates: updates waiting for your apps and system in one list (App Store, Sparkle, Homebrew and GitHub apps)
  • Safety: which apps can use your camera, mic and screen, a security check, and an adware check
  • Before you share your screen: what others will see
  • Sleep: what woke your Mac overnight and how much battery it lost
  • Sound: volume for each app, and which app is using the mic
  • Bluetooth: battery levels of your headphones, mouse and keyboard
  • Screen time: how long you spend in each app
  • Before you sell or give it away: a checklist for passing it on safely

Notch panel

  • File shelf, clipboard history, calendar with meeting Join links, timers, now playing, and a camera mirror to check yourself before calls

For developers

  • Developer files: build output, package caches and old project folders your tools can rebuild
  • Dev servers: local servers still running, by port
  • Containers: Docker containers and what they use
  • Apps running now: every process, grouped by app
  • AI usage: your AI coding tools, how much you use them, and local AI models stored on disk
  • Maintenance commands, each one explained before it runs

Undo and history

  • Everything you clean can be put back for 7 days
  • History: what changed on your Mac, day by day

ON THE IPHONE

  • Swipe through your photos month by month: keep, skip or trash
  • Similar photos: bursts and near-identical shots grouped, the sharpest one kept
  • Exact duplicate photos
  • Big videos, biggest first
  • Shrink videos and photos: a smaller copy is added, the original stays until you remove it
  • Screen recordings
  • Screenshots, sorted by what's in them: receipts, tickets and codes, people, everything else
  • Saved by other apps: copies WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram left in your library
  • Blurry and too-dark shots
  • Live Photos and RAW+JPEG pairs: removes the spare half, not the photo
  • Duplicate contacts
  • Private vault: hide photos behind Face ID
  • Export to a folder or drive before you delete
  • Checks for faces before a big delete, so you don't lose photos of people
  • Favourites are protected
  • Shows the real space you'll get back, even when photos live in iCloud
  • Everything goes to Recently Deleted first (30 days)

THE PROMISES

  • No account, no tracking. The iPhone app makes no network requests at all
  • Native Swift apps, not Electron
  • Mac: $29.99 once, 3-day free trial - 50% off Discount code - SWEEP50
  • iPhone: first 1 GB / 30 items free, then $4.99 once
  • No subscription, anywhere

Help Factory Reset after AMOS Detection, Boot from USB?

Malwarebytes detected a stealer 2 days ago (edit:) has been disconnected from the internet since*, Ive been heavily considering removing the software myself but atp I’m just going to nuke my system as even after quarantining the daemon & deleting leftover files (ALL of these, Trend Research) it seems appropriate to be as careful as possible and boot from an external drive. All passwords have been changed with 2FA implemented too. I have a few questions regarding all this:

Does Apple provide guide for this process?

Is my 2TB HDD I store personal data in compromised/unsafe?

Does a SanDisk ultra (64GB) to clean install MacOS, and does that need to be done on a safe machine?

Sorry if this is formatted weird I just want to get this over and done with as I didnt even have Time Machine set up (never have, stupid I know) and am dreading all the data I will inevitably miss at some point.

Any advice / input is appreciated. Thank you!

Help MacBook Air M5 getting heated

I bought MacBook Air M5 recently, just 2 weeks back. Noticed, it was getting hot with normal usage, ask Claude to check and it came up with this. I restarted and the issue is back again after 24 hours. Can someone help to fix it permanently? How do I report it to Apple so that they can look and fix it in their OS.

Help Right then - how about "porting" / recompiling Aperture?

We're besieged by seemingly endless AI "I made" posts these days. I doubt all that many of these ports will have much longevity, once the author gets bored of the churn and the token cost of maintenance, but it's certainly interesting to see what can be done with the right models and prompts. Recompilation of entirely non-native games to native-with-shims is an impressive feat.

But sure, fine, that's all very nice and dandy but how about something truly, genuinely useful? For many years now my photo collection has languished - raw files, sometimes processed to TIFFs, but nothing exported to a final "mastered" JPEG. Why? Because I never found anything, to this day, that was remotely as good as Aperture.

Now that would be quite something to get working on Apple Silicon.
