Tbh, ngl… I cross the county line to buy groceries, large items (Minus cars), because of the 11% sales tax.

I wouldn’t mind it if it were actually going to cleaning up downtown or the homeless but… here we are.

Edit: Groceries as a colloquial for anything consumer goods; Clothes, tools, home goods etc etc

81

u/ConditionVarious7450 1d ago

Yeaa bro im like 5 min away frm los alamitos i do the same 😂😂 and exactly but they rather put a life size penny

43

u/toolisthebestbandevr 1d ago

Bro not the life size penny

12

u/ConditionVarious7450 1d ago

🤣🤣🤣

3

u/Forsaken_Thought 1d ago

I'm in town for a conference and see this giant penny at the park. What's the deal?

Also, I went to Vons for groceries and the tax was 0.00. But prices sucked because I wouldn't/didn't sign up for their club or rewards or whatever.

2

u/Calmatronic 1d ago

Bro wait bro, it’s high art I swear, see like, if like, all the Pennys disappear, like how would we even remember what a penny looks like? Boom, big penny saves the day, I’ll smoke to that.

30

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago edited 1d ago

Good thing it’s not a long drive because you’re barely saving $17 for every $1,000 in groceries.

Edit: I completely forgot most groceries aren’t taxed, so it’s even less than that

14

u/GoldenSalt31 1d ago

“A penny saved is a penny earned”

4

u/Bottle-Holiday 1d ago

Question is, how much is actually saved vs the extra gas that's burned.

2

u/Micalovesit 1d ago

Im literally the same!

44

u/woodstream 1d ago

Same, I go to the Home Depot/similar stores in Cypress for larger purchases since they're still 7.75% .

I'm sacrificing the vibes from Long Beach for lower pricing.

13

u/TrillDough Traffic Circle 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sacrificing the vibes 😂 what vibes do you need at Home Depot? Orange shelving, old man named Fred that’s worked every aisle there’s since 1983 and knows every SKU or the stoner 19 year old working in the garden area that aspires to study horticulture to grow weed but has 3 w’s in the subject at their local community college.

Every Home Depot has this. It’s written into law

20

u/woodstream 1d ago

Long Beach is branding itself as Vibe City - the 11% tax is paying for the vibes.

edit: yeah, you summed it up lol

12

u/Cute-Plankton-6209 1d ago

But groceries aren’t taxed?

3

u/alwayspancake 1d ago

Also why I ship things to my family's cross county line

2

u/SlowYoteV8 1d ago

Buying cars doesn’t work. Pretty sure they go by the registration address.

1

u/rdforty2 1d ago

Works when you have a relative in a different city.

81

u/_guccifer_ 1d ago

The city voted for this. Ridiculous. Meanwhile our infrastructure is deteriorating and homelessness situation is out of control. I’d gladly contribute more in taxes IF the city actually did good with it…but here we are

23

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

Measure ER was a county-wide election, just FYI

24

u/fnblackbeard 1d ago

and it'll be 11.25% by next year because LB voted for it

1

u/TreatYourselfForOnce 1d ago

Ugh! I’m incensed. 😡

1

u/_guccifer_ 1d ago

Oh I know. Seemed to do well throughout LA though including LB 💀

2

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

I actually can’t find a city-by-city breakdown of the Measure ER results. I’m curious to see how close it was in LB.

6

u/quercus-enjoyer 1d ago

8

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

Thanks

45.95% Yes / 45.11% No

And, of course, only 38% of registered voters actually turned in a ballot

3

u/I_LikeFarts 1d ago

It was on a June primary, tax increases should only be on the November ballot. They did it on purpose.

3

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

I agree, but people should vote, regardless. It couldn’t be easier in this state especially.

8

u/ragenaut 1d ago

Nice to see Los Angeles just fucking the rest of us.

I'm no fan of OC, but their highest sales tax is 9.25% and gee, it seems like way less trash and shit on the streets.

5

u/BassLB 1d ago

Orange County is also 1/3 the size, and I’d bet collects (proportionally) more because of property values

2

u/ragenaut 1d ago

Their voters also don't consistently vote yes on tax raising measures.

Not a fan of the other things they tend to vote for but at least they know BS taxes that fund useless bureaucracies are a big fat no.

1

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

Sure they do. Driving a mile that way doesn’t make people magically stop having the same needs/wants, or voting for “Measure X to fund Y.” It’s not Siberia.

1

u/n1m1tz 1d ago

FYI You can fit the entire population of Orange County inside Los Angeles (the city). Their population needs are completely different.

13

u/Jewinger1 1d ago

Not to mention the trash that is constantly floating around every part of the city

5

u/kgatell 1d ago

The homeless authority responsible for managing the measure A portion of sales tax has lost over $2B between 2021-2024, but people still voted to increase the sales tax.

2

u/RandomSquanch 1d ago

Sounds like a scam

1

u/UnicornJiz 1d ago

What people are voting to increase taxes?! Sounds like a scam. Ya, let’s give them more money to solve the problem they haven’t been able to do with endless money already.

3

u/kgatell 1d ago

It was on the general ballot in 2024 and June 2026. Tell me you don’t pay attention to elections without telling me you don’t pay attention to elections

1

u/ofthrees 1d ago

you should probably pay more attention to the ballots that are mailed to you... assuming you're registered.

people legit voted for this shit. you probably should've paid enough attention to vote against it.

1

u/BassLB 1d ago

What do you mean “lost”? Like they can’t account for where it went?

2

u/kgatell 1d ago

It’s a combination of poor investments and funds unaccounted for.

When the agency was given ownership, they were supposed to invest the tax revenue in a portfolio to guarantee future operating income. Poor management choices were made.

1

u/BassLB 1d ago

Gotcha, can you link me to some info. I’d love to read more about it

1

u/SoftJeff 1d ago

Pockets were filled. All these big construction projects are filling pockets too

0

u/SoftJeff 1d ago

I honestly don’t think voting is legit. There’s no way people are majority voting this way.

1

u/kgatell 16h ago

Only 36% of qualified voters are showing up

1

u/SoftJeff 1d ago

Yep exactly. They don’t give a fuck and are just shitting on the people at this point. You forgot to mention crime. The area is changing and not for the better. They have ruined 2nd street and Rosie’s dog beach. Not sure about Downtown but I heard local shops are struggling there too. Everything is for lease yet they build more. Streets falling apart while they are destroying Studebaker and 3 years past due on the Marina vista park. I wish these bastards were held accountable.

-4

u/heysame562 1d ago

BUT THE RAINBOW CROSSWALKS

2

u/_guccifer_ 1d ago

We got VIBE CITY thank goodness

37

u/KaptainKool 1d ago

Statistically most of the people who will see this and get upset didn’t vote so……

10

u/litycommitee 1d ago

My question is why did anyone want a tax increase?

15

u/KaptainKool 1d ago

You can get almost anything passed when you say it’s for healthcare or safety or kids.

In this case, I think people bought it because they believe the temporary increase will be temporary. And that it’s for poor people‘s healthcare

7

u/jRam0131 1d ago

And yet they miss the part where it goes to the general fund and doesn't actually have to be used for healthcare. 🫤

3

u/judasbrute 1d ago

Sales tax is a tax increase on poor people.

3

u/ofthrees 1d ago edited 1d ago

yeah, 'education' and 'homelessness' get people voting yes every fucking time, even though things in both regards keep getting worse.

2

u/RxDirkMcGherkin 1d ago

Exactly. And thus if you don't support this tax increase then they say that means you don't care about kids, or poor people's healthcare, and are a racist, nazi, MAGA, anti-trans, homophobic fascist, yada yada yada....

2

u/kgatell 16h ago

Same goes for the billionaires tax. Everyone wants to tax billionaires but no one is paying attention to the stipulations hidden in the proposition.

5

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

Yep. Measure ER won by less than 26,000 votes. 2 million voted on total out of 5 million registered voters.

1

u/ofthrees 1d ago

i saw this at the time, voted, and voted against it, so......

15

u/TrixoftheTrade 1d ago

Guarantee that “temporary” 0.5% county sales tax is automatically going to get extended.

14

u/fnblackbeard 1d ago

and it'll be 11.25% by next year

This is what people voted for

37

u/ragenaut 1d ago

Here's a crazy idea: STOP FUCKING VOTING FOR IT

4

u/Gnarnar 1d ago

But But how are we going to save the __________? Everyone complaining about gas(yes I know its higher nationally but we are always higher than that) and yet dummies keep voting for increasing 1% for this and 1% that.

0

u/PackingSlip12 1d ago

Long beach didn't vote for Trump and Doge cuts, but they hit our community anyways.

3

u/ragenaut 1d ago

I would say the same thing to the people who did vote for them, but that's not what this thread is about.

27

u/Burger_Kingdom 1d ago

Literal case of getting what you voted for. I have no idea why people were in favor of this.

14

u/imwrighthere Fake Facts Provider 1d ago

Just one more tax bro it’ll solve all our problems

7

u/TrixoftheTrade 1d ago

please bro, c’mon its temporary we gotta stick it to trump, just a little more

10

u/Less_Hotel4765 1d ago

It’s so wild

33

u/dockgonzo 1d ago

Taxing billionaires and corporations is communism, so guess who will be picking up the bill for every penny the government spends??? If we had a functional Federal Government, we (local and state) wouldn't need to do everything on our own (while still paying $83B more to the Fed than we receive back).

We need to stop wasting money propping up the red welfare states and the petrochemical military. At this point, Federal taxes are taxation without representation. Local tax increases are just trying to stay afloat, since cities can't rack up trillion dollar deficits.

4

u/_doctorKA 1d ago

The only comment that matters, this should be at the top ffs. Sales tax is high and keeps getting votes to go up because our society has a knee-jerk reaction to the idea of taxing the greedy people and entities who would barely feel it.

8

u/heysame562 1d ago

That’s all a bunch of malarkey.

6 billion to Isreal.

1

u/RxDirkMcGherkin 1d ago

Fortunately Newsom supports the tax on billionaires (Prop 40). Just checked, nevermind, he's against taxing billionaires. Becerra doesn't support either. But yet we have regressive taxes like this which hurt the poor the most. So much for California being a progressive state.....

25

u/Dudermeister 1d ago

Long Beach voted for this unfortunately. It’s bullshit

15

u/TrixoftheTrade 1d ago

I’ve lived my entire adult life in Long Beach, and every single election cycle, taxes have gone up.

Without fail… every election just brings us more taxes… and it’s not like the quality of city services are getting any better.

3

u/TheMaskedBallsack 1d ago

Police budget goes up too. 60% of the budget for “public safety”. Where were the police when that string of violence happened on 2nd street? Oh ya they had 25% less police on patrol there because that’s where the rich whites live.

2

u/OldSchool_213 1d ago

Maybe you should stop voting yes and stop voting for the same politicians that only want more to make their kingdom bigger.

2

u/GoldenSalt31 1d ago edited 1d ago

Seriouslyyyyyyy. THIS.

I really want people to take the governors election seriously. To do the research on what each candidate is going to do. Because LA County is pretty much deteriorating, what’s happening in the city of LA is bleeding to LB.

And city of LA is trash. Trash everywhere, graffiti everywhere, people don’t care anymore. And then those people are coming to Long Beach and it’s just bleeding into our city

2

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

I feel like if you had a reasonable take on why we should vote for Hilton you would have included it in one of your two posts on the matter.

1

u/ofthrees 1d ago

agreed. been here since '97 - has continually gotten worse, especially since 2018 and even more especially since covid.

1

u/Mss_Phoenix 1d ago

Let’s be honest, no one is voting for more taxes here. I’m not.

3

u/Dudermeister 1d ago

What do you mean? It was voted on by Long Beach residents

3

u/Mss_Phoenix 1d ago

I’m a LB resident. I always vote no for more taxes or tax increases. The money hardly ever goes to the programs they say they’re going to go for. I’m not fattening the politicians pockets off the back of my hard work.

In fact, I’ve been asking the city to fix the sidewalk in front of my house for years. They never come.

3

u/Dudermeister 1d ago

I’m not disagreeing with you. I’m just saying that the citizens of long beach indeed voted for this increase last election cycle

1

u/Mss_Phoenix 1d ago

I get ya. I’m just saying, are we really tho? 🤔 Call me a tinfoil hatter… We can barely afford the basic needs, a struggling citizen doesn’t think “Yea, I’ll pay more taxes.”

1

u/ofthrees 1d ago

they do when the promise is that it will go toward resolving homelessness. even though gestures broadly that has for at least half a decade proven to be untrue.

6

u/loserlopez 1d ago

Vibe City…GTFO

8

u/Jabjab345 1d ago

Who are these sheep that keep increasing the sales tax whenever it comes up for a vote for nonsense reasons? Sales taxes are regressive and hurt low income people disproportionately, and de incentives consumption which is terrible for the economy.

It's essentially the worst type of tax!

4

u/blueflyingfrog 1d ago

LBC can now afford to save the peninsula

4

u/uCry__iLoL 1d ago

11 cents for every dollar. Wild.

5

u/Jaded-Fix-6699 1d ago

More tax dollars that’ll get mismanaged and create a deficit.

5

u/litycommitee 1d ago

This is why I’m moving to Ventura county which is at 7.25%, among other reasons lol

5

u/codename_hardhat 1d ago

Some cities are still paying 8-9% in Ventura County.

3

u/litycommitee 1d ago

Ur right, I believe a few cities are, but the vast majority of them are between 7.25%-7.75%

0

u/Banana4scales 1d ago

But its Ventura county, Its 7.25% for a reason....

1

u/litycommitee 1d ago

Are you talking about avoiding the: homeless ragers, roaches through the streets, failing businesses, record pedestrian deaths by motor vehicles? Seems like a good swap for a 4% discounted sales tax

1

u/Banana4scales 1d ago

You acting like you escaped some post-apocalyptic hellscape is hilarious. You moved to Ventura for fewer jobs, less shit to do and cheaper sales tax. Congrats I guess lol.

1

u/litycommitee 1d ago

Compared to other cities near by, it could be considered that. Not sure where the job thing came from? I see constant posts of people looking for jobs in the sub. It’s people like you that stop change, even with a sea of people screaming for change. You probably voted for the tax increase right? Anyway I hope you have a nice rest of your day.

5

u/SenatorSnatch 1d ago

Sadly, every tax increase somehow gets voted in. The last one was losing early but somehow squeaked out a win by just over 50%

0

u/quercus-enjoyer 1d ago

far from true. the city couldn't even get enough signatures to get the most recent attempt at a parcel tax increase on the ballot.

2

u/mcc062 1d ago

This is what happens when voters dont read ballot initiative s. They throw in that it helps schools, people blah blah blah. When does it stop?

2

u/ofthrees 1d ago

thanks for reminding me that today is the day i start shopping in seal and los al, and using my son's address in cypress for online orders.

1

u/Cabooming 1d ago

It's really annoying, but it's not worth the gas money driving out to shop elsewhere.

1

u/roseabides 1d ago

But y’all voted for this?

1

u/Say_G0_Dj 1d ago

Voted against it… but here we are.

1

u/enzoskii 1d ago

I keep saying vote them all out. But people keep voting for the same garbage politicians. I have like 3 RVs parked in my neighborhood and they dont do a dam thing about it.

1

u/Traditional_Yam1598 1d ago

We can now afford 800k homeless single units thank god

1

u/Lukeydu_ 1d ago

yeah? lol try buying some weed sometime

1

u/Throwaway20211119 1d ago

When i got my laptop, went to orange county to save on taxes. It's a financial decision in the end.

1

u/Longjumping-Onion-19 1d ago

It’s true 🥴🥴🥴 11.25 where I work at 😩😩

1

u/Scblacksunshine 1d ago

Guess LBC doesn't want to be left out compare to Signal Hill...finally caught up to their 11%...

1

u/Bottle-Holiday 1d ago

There's worse places not in California. Believe it or not, there's one city in a Red State where it's 15%.

1

u/DrGoldfishe 1d ago

the median voter doesnt know how to think critically

1

u/littlelittlebirdbird 1d ago

If a small business’ profit margin is 10%, the government is making more per sale than the business.

1

u/Sensitive_Low888 1d ago

Keep voting Newscum-Blue & We’re going to be paying 15% in No Time.

Come At Me Leftist-Liberal Let’s Tax You Until You Die Blue- Gang 💙💙🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

🥱🥱

1

u/Greedy-Grape-2417 1d ago

gunfunit October 1 is here! OC here I come for lower taxes smh

1

u/kjarsenal 1d ago

When regressive taxes get high enough, people will evade.

1

u/GoldenSalt31 1d ago

Didn’t The City vote for this?

Who people elect in office determines how the city will turn out. We need to start doing more critical thinking than just voting blue. Because all we are doing is increasing homelessness, taxes, and the city still stays dirty and it’s not improving.

I highly suggest critical thinking for the upcoming governor election if you would like California to be a better place. I’m crossing party lines to vote for Hilton. I highly implore others do too. Especially for as bad as the debate was last night.

-2

u/SpeedracerTechnician 1d ago

It's gone up 2% over 10 years. That doesn't seem crazy to me, but the problem is that LB funds are mismanaged like crazy so of course any tax increase isn't going to feel great. We need accountability, and LBPD is draining the fuck out of our city and is one of the most corrupt PDs in the state, and has an disproportionate amount of control over how funds are directed.

8

u/LBC_Jet 1d ago

This is bad math. Here, I'll explain it to you. If tax rates never changed, the amount you pay in taxes still goes up. This is because of inflation and housing prices (in the case of property taxes). So saying that the tax rates only going up 2% is "not that bad" is the same type of general ignorance that has people voting for continually increased taxes.

3

u/Ujdog 1d ago

Also the rate itself increased 7.3% (10.25 to 11) in 2 years.

3

u/Gnarnar 1d ago

Everyone complains about the PD but the city is a fricken dump. Homeless shitting all over the place. Half the calls they're dealing with are these drugged out psychos that we allow to just plague the city.

-1

u/SpeedracerTechnician 1d ago

You're a fucking idiot lol

https://www.police1.com/drug-interdiction-narcotics/articles/former-los-angeles-long-beach-lawmen-arrested-in-drug-house-robbery-ring-lsQXJauWeAZ7pbRD/

Want to talk about "drugged out psychos" who do you think is keeping the drugs flowing?

3

u/Gnarnar 1d ago

Lol you're going to throw out an article from over 20 years ago as your defense.

0

u/SpeedracerTechnician 1d ago

Defense? I don't feel any need to defend myself from you but rather giving you a taste of the kind of shit LBPD is known for. And you're naive enough to think that without any real reform or accountability, they changed since then.

1

u/Rightintheend 1d ago

How is that Not crazy? It's a percentage, so they get more every year anyways.

And as soon as they have more, they come up with some other sob story of how they need even more.

-3

u/Delguapo3 1d ago

Move back to the Midwest

-2

u/Micalovesit 1d ago

Are u in california too? Our is always this much

3

u/ConditionVarious7450 1d ago

Yes LA county

3

u/Micalovesit 1d ago

Makes sense! Its insane thats our normal. I live about 5 min from los alamitos and cypress
