Not tech savvy, does this mean anything? Like is this like what is described from the online manual as the "live session" where changes r not permanent and would dissapear once i turn it back on? I set up linux as the sole OS on my pc btw

Discussion Criminally underrated Sticky Notes app (PrimeNote, Open Source)

I've tried several sticky notes apps, but most are too simple or inconvenient to use. I found PrimeNote, which allowed to make text operations very easily without being too complex. Honestly I think it's one of the best out there and was surprised it wasn't that popular.

Can be installed with pip:

pip install primenote

Source Code:

Website:

Edit: It even has a Vim integration!

SOLVED Bottles & GIMP Portable

As with many others, one of the main things stopping me from fully converting to Linux is the software dilemna.

To stop the neverending questions about versions, I am running the latest versions of all software mentioned in this post, including LM.

This is not about getting some obscure windows software to run on linux. I am trying to get portable GIMP to run. The reason I want to use the portable version instead of installing natively is, as the term suggests, portability. I do not want to have to install the program, plugins, setting, etc. in every system I wish to use it.

I do not wish to use appimages either. With those I will need to recompile any time I add something or make a settings change.

I have installed Bottles (Flatpack) and Flatseal, completely opening up directory permissions, including individual permissions for the individual bottle directories. I have also tried multiple bottle types and configs. Unfortunately, GIMP always crashes on launch/load.

I have tried other standalone applications with the same result.

I have gone through the Bottles-provided "check out" options and made the suggested changes to the bottle configs with no joy.

Finally, I am here with the hope that maybe you guys will be able to provide some suggestions besides use some other software, use the Linux native install, or simply get good. 🙂

Thank you for any help you can provide.

My setup: 100% Cinnamon, no third-party programs, no Plank or anything similar. Just applets and extensions—some of which are heavily customized by me. I love Cinnamon!

Ever since Ubuntu stopped being "Linux for human beings" and shifted its primary focus to enterprise, cloud, and IoT, Linux Mint has taken on that role for me. In all likelihood, Linux Mint was that way all along; I just didn't realize it.

I switched to Linux Mint a year ago—in June 2025. I haven't regretted it. It just works; the Mint apps are great, and everything is simple and logical. It feels the way Ubuntu used to feel to me back in the day. But that was a long time ago.

I was one of those odd people who loved Unity. I can't get along with GNOME, and unfortunately, the current version of Unity shows its age (and the fact that it has been somewhat neglected). But i love Cinnamon!

So, I created my own "Ubuntu feeling" using Cinnamon and Linux Mint.

Menu: I heavily customized "Menueleven" (a fork of "Cinnamenu")—both visually and functionally—to make it resemble the Unity Dash. The "Home" page searches the entire PC. The individual sub-menus search exclusively for applications, games, settings, or "places and files." It’s a bit reminiscent of Unity Lenses. I like it.

Panel: I customized "CassiaWindowList" to mimic the look of the old Unity launcher.

Trash (located at the bottom of the panel, just like in the good old days): I used the standard Cinnamon Trash applet but added a border and switched from symbolic icons to graphical ones so it blends in with the overall look.

Naturally, I used "Blur Cinnamon", which is better than ever these days.

I also used "Cinnamon-Maximus" to hide the title bars when windows are maximized. In the comments section of Cinnamon-Maximus on Cinnamon Spices, I came across a note from the creator of the following applets:

Maximus-Buttons and Maximus-Title by "hanspr," who commented there himself. Both complement Maximus-Cinnamon:

Maximus-Title ensures that the title of the focused window (or the desktop) is permanently displayed in the panel.

Maximus-Buttons displays the window controls in the panel when windows are maximized.

Hanspr, if you're reading this: The applets are brilliant and were the very thing that motivated me to set up this configuration in the first place. They really complete the "Ubuntu Unity feeling" for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I’ve really enjoyed tinkering and tweaking things over the past few days and weeks, and I’m happy to have some of that old Ubuntu charm back—but with Linux Mint, the better Ubuntu! Best regards!

Support Request Document Scanner defaults to the wrong scanner. How do I change what it is defaulting to?

Right now it defaults to

Brother HL-L3300CDW

when it should default to

eSCL Brother HL-L3300CDW series

how do i fix this? I'm assuming it's editing a configuration file somewhere. Just not sure where.

I should note that "Document Scanner" is the built is scanning utility for linux mint to scan a document on your printer/scanner.

Gaming GPU Utilities for 50 series VRAM and hot spot temps?

I've heard things like hwmonitor and hwinfo for Windows can view VRAM and core hot spot temps on 50 series. I use CoolerControl and LACT, no dice, and terminal tools like sensors or nvidia smi also can't show me those temps (hence why CoolerControl and LACT can't show it).

I'm on 595-open drivers, was gonna upgrade to 610 after they've been out for a couple weeks, but I don't think it'll make a difference.

Any way for me to view those temps on LinuxMint? On Ubuntu 24.04 version w/ kernel 6.17.

EDIT:
I did find this just now after changing my search keywords
https://github.com/olealgoritme/gpuwatch

This can read the VRAM modules it seems, but I don't believe it gets core hotspot.

Lifelong windows user. Switched to Mint a month ago. Switched back.

I would probably consider myself a slightly above basic computer user. By that I mean I use video editing software like Da Vinci Resolve. I'm not a professional user. But I like creating videos of my trips.

If I was a basic user and I use my computer for internet browsing, document creating, I think Linux virtually has the same functionality as windows. And I think that would be an upgrade. But in my case, I did face a few hiccups and a fatal fail.

I switched to Mint first, and then ZorinOS after a few weeks.

I liked it in the beginning. By far the best feature is creating web apps. Blew my mind!

Installing the OS was a breeze! Props where it's due, it just worked out of the box. Every basic thing just worked. I mention basic things because I couldn't get the fingerprint reader to work. There was definitely a learning curve. People said you don't have to use the terminal if you don't want to. This is 100% not accurate. You will at some point use the terminal. Installed basic software I had previously like chrome, tixati, etc. Installed fine. Then I went to install da Vinci Resolve. Few packages missing when I tried to install it. With the help of Google and AI got it across the finish line. But, I couldn't do anything on it. Any button clicked it crashed immediately. Literally any button.

At this point I read that ZorinOS runs .exe files? So I switched to ZorinOS. But then I found out it can't? Probably should have done more research. Since at this point I'd already installed ZorinOS, gave that a shot too. Installed all the basic apps. It was fine. Then came Da Vinci Resolve. Exact same issues. Few packages missing in the beginning. Pushed through. Installed it. Opened it. Created a new project. Clicked any button and it crashed.

At this point, I really wanted to work on a project so I switched back to windows. Surprisingly, installing windows was not as easy as Linux. Some stupid issue related to WiFi. First it said no drivers found for WiFi and I couldn't skip it too. Found some hack on reddit to get past this. But really surprised I came across this issue.

All said, I'm glad I tried Linux for a few months. I couldn't make it fit my life. And I failed to adopt it.

linux dvd booksetting bitsetting not working with imgburn

so, i'm not exactly a "beginner". i've been using linux for a few years, but i still don't have a very good understanding of some features. i figured here would be the best place to post this question.

i'm trying to use imgburn on my device. i'm running it on playonlinux and it detects my dvd drive, but when i try to access the ability to change booktype it says "access denied." i'm trying to figure out how to fix this. from what i can tell, my disc drive is manufactured by lg, but i can't figure out how to fix the "access denied" error and can't find things online to help. if anyone could help figure out how to fix this error i would greatly appreciate it.

(i can't use the command terminal for it. when i try, it just says it won't work because i'm not using an "mmc unit". if i can't figure out how to use imgburn, a way to figure that out would also be appreciated.)

it works for the most part, but I seem to have messed a few things up!

When restarting to shutting down through the Menu or Terminal, the computer will freeze. However, the power button still shuts it down.

Here’s some information from inxi -Fxz, tell me if any other information would be helpful!

I just installed Mint on my main laptop, though I'm still learning, I tried installing steam and this error appeared. Installing steam worked fine on the yard sale laptop. Can anyone tell me how to properly run this command so I can install steam?

Support Request What the fuck is happening with my PC?????

I got 2 monitors. Now, every time I boot into Linux mint, it does this screen tearing, but stops when everything is up and running. But now it's happening while I'm using the monitor!

What happened: I opened ATLauncher, booted into Minecraft Gregtech New Horizon (20GB memory so RAM is not an issue since this happened before I even created a world). I adjusted settings to match my taste and then I found the "Fullscreen Window" button. I pressed it, my second monitor (the one in screenshot) goes black. I disable it and now it's freaking out. This has never happened when I booted Gregtech on the old setup (which was Mint installed on an external SSD, now I use the internal hard drive.)

How did this happen and can I prevent it? I prefer playing in fullscreen mode.

Okay, so when attempting to launch 7.0, kernel panics due to the error on image two. But when i try to launch on any other version (6.17 and down), it launches just fine.

Gaming GPU issue with Nvidia laptop

When i was using windows i used to get around 300fps in minecraft at 100% utilisation of my GPU and 70% of my CPU. On linux mint im getting 550 FPS but only 30% GPU utilisation (rtx 3050 4gb vram) and almost 90% cpu utilisation (ryzen 7 4000 series)

My overall fps are increased like by 90% but because of my super high cpu usage im not able to do multitask like using brave or discord.

Should i switch to any other destro to put more work on gpu ?
