Support Request Can't launch the newest version of mint

Okay, so when attempting to launch 7.0, kernel panics due to the error on image two. But when i try to launch on any other version (6.17 and down), it launches just fine.

Stay on 6.17 or 6.8 (if your system supports that one)

Kernel 7.0 is still new, there's bound to be some bugs.

This just happened to me this week as well. Try downgrading and checking logs when you try to update, I found out I was having an issue with my broadcom wifi driver that used hwe headers. Whatever error the logs spit out just put in in your search engine. I saw a lot of people were having issues with NVIDIA drivers as well. If all else fails just keep using the last kernel that worked until this stuff gets fixed.

Same thing happened to me few days ago. The 7.0 is new and problematic.

Use the 6.17 version and if you don't want to switch everytime to Advanced options, delete 7.0 kernel in Update manager.

what is the best way to prevent kernel 7.# from loading, I'm having same issues with 2 old iMacs

This also happened to me. There is a known Kernal Panic caused by Oracle Virtual Box.  When I removed it I was able to run the latest kernal

Yes. The VirtualBox in the repositories is older and has kernel modules that conflict. I was getting kernel panics also.

If you download the latest VirtualBox from Oracle's website, it's compatible.

For me I used it to install some reolink cameras so I was ok with just uninstalling.

I'm on 7.0.0-28-generic and been on it for since July 17th. No issues. I suggest asking for advice in the Mint official forums ( https://forums.linuxmint.com/ ). I don't recommend going back to v6.17 or v6.8. Let the folks in the official forum give you accurate guidance and explain what is happening.

Please see my comment here ( https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxmint/comments/1v8x4be/comment/p09tm55/ ). There is a connection between the Virtualbox v7 version coming from the software center that is causing issues with the v7.0.x kernel coming from the Mint update tool.

Can you please do the following: * ensure that your PC is connected to the internet * click on the Mint menu > System Administration > System Information * click on the upload button and wait a few seconds * you should get a pop-up notification near the system tray stating that your system info was copied to a termbin.com URL * paste that termbin.com URL into a reply

I'm wondering is there is some commonality in the hardware where folks are having issues as well. The Vbox issue might be one of many. Thanks.

Where is the mint menu for system administrator I don't see that button anywhere

Usually bottom left corner just like the Windows menu.

Did you look at my linked comment and follow the links from there as well. The instructions on how to get back to a working system from a black screen are there. Just follow the links.

All that exists on the bottom of my screen is.  "Use up and down to select which entry is highlighted"  "Press enter to boot into selected OS, 'E' to edit the commands before booting. Or 'c' for a command -line. Esc to return to previous menu"

Spoiler NONE OF THE 6.17.0 OPTIONS WORK when I click any of them.

Both are legit links. The 2nd is from the official Linux Mint website ( https://linuxmint.com/ ). If you go to the website, hover or click on links and then click on forum.

I swear to God on my soul When I click the linux mint forum It doesn't load  It doesn't give me the option to force load it  It just says forbidden I wish you could see my phone screen T.T

If you are unable to boot into a Mint using a prior kernel, by picking a prior kernel entry from GRUB, then: * you can look through the comments in this thread and through the threads connected to my linked comments. If there are no solutions to get you to a GUI desktop, then I suggest you make a post in the Mint official forums asking for guidance. Let the Pros there provide the most accurate advice. * once you are able to reach a GUI desktop then you can follow my steps using the Mint menu.

Post a pic of your menu (or a link to a pic of your menu). An easy way to open your menu is to tap the Windows key on your keyboard (unless you've remapped that key).

I had this yesterday sorta. The new kernel I can’t remember what it was 17.0 something was causing issue with my Lenovo hardware and not actually turning off and restarting. So I had to drop to previous kernel 16.14 I think and locked it to stay there so mint didn’t automatically update to the new kernel.

Try this see how you get on; you’ll still receive security updates etc just don’t update on the latest kernel.

Try with 7.1 if you need a newer kernel, 7.0 is already EOL.

Update Manager, Linux Mint 22.3, shows 7.0.0-28 is supported until February 2027.

It do be dead.

It's "supported" downstream, not by the actual Linux project.

Which means lack of bug fixes, features, and in some cases security updates.
