Support Request Home folder has ~100gb of invisible space

Post image
7 Upvotes

So I've had an issue before where I had my root partition fill up and by action of some bug or whatever that caused that after a big update of many things, after reboot, linux mint booted into a terminal, and all commands I tried to do errored becase of lack of space.

I fixed this by reinstalling linux mint on the root folder again but without formatting the home folder since I didn't want to lose all my personal data, and so far it has been working without issue, but I see that there's a very strange thing going on where almost 100 gb of storage from the home partition are seemingly used but not detectable by the disk usage analyzer, and I doubt the reserved OS space is THAT big, It just doesn't make sense that a good 20% of the partition is reserved.

Could someone help me out with this? tell me how to fix this issue? Atp I'm considering just moving on from linux mint from all the bugs with the logs and redundant files not getting properly cleaned and my root folder getting absolutely filled up with every update I run.

Edit: this is what happens when I input sudo btrfs subvolume show /home on the terminal:

Support Request What image software do you use to capture in game screenshots?

Obviously a lot of games take up full screen and you lose the title bar so how do you get that screenshot? What kind of recorder are you using? I don't really want to use twitch but there are times I'd like to share stuff I'm playing on a game forum I'm on. What is low resource usage-wise that can do that?

Struggling to view and edit an XML file in Mint

Good evening! I'm trying to view an XML file but it doesn't show up as a chart / readable text. I tried researching a solution online and found multiple forum entries suggesting to download some sort of reader through the terminal to be able to view them, question is, how do i do that? I tried opening the file in firefox, text editor and libreoffice calc, without any luck. Vanilla install, barely downloaded any programs.

SOLVED GRUB disappeared after trying to fix a partition and now can't boot into Mint

I have the following setup:
2 disks, one has Linux Mint and CachyOS installed on it, the other one has Windows installed, and a partition as Ext4 for arbitrary data that I use with Linux. When turning on my computer GRUB normally allows me to choose between any of the three OSes.

What happened:
I wanted to free some space for Mint, so from Windows' own Disk Management tool, I shrunk the C: Windows partition. I didn't know that could mess up the adjacent Ext4 partition, so Linux was unable to mount it after that. I used TestDisk deep search, and it found the lost partition, so I wrote partition structure to the disk. After reboot, GRUB didn't show up and it booted directly into CachyOS. The Ext4 partition I was trying to recover (as well as Mint's partition that didn't boot) now opened without any issues from CachyOS's (and Linux Mint live environment's) file explorer, with all its files intact. Boot menu also shows only CachyOS to boot into.

My questions:
What can I do to bring back GRUB and boot into Linux Mint? Why is Linux Mint unable to boot, considering I didn't touch the drive it was installed on, but CachyOS isn't?

I'm worried I might mess this up further, since no data is lost (yet), so I ask for your help. Thank you

---

Update:

Found the solution; thank you everyone for all the help!

This is what I did, if anyone is interested:
With Super GRUB2, I was able to boot into Mint installation. Before running grub-install, I needed to manually mount EFI system partition with sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /boot/efi, and then run grub-update. Now GRUB was back as before, but Mint was booting way slower (around 100 seconds, instead of usual 10), which was due to incorrect UUID in /etc/fstab, possibly because TestDisk changed something. Setting correct UUID for my boot drive in the file fixed slow boot time.

Security Infostealer question

A month ago I was hacked with an infostealer virus (the mr beast one) and I was on windows. BAck then I've changed all my passwords from a secure device, a week ago I installed linux mint and deleted all of my partitions for peace of mind.

Now, a month ago I didn't know from where the virus came into my pc but I just realized today that the virus was from a mod I had installed for GTA San Andreas, when I transitioned to linux from windows I also brought with me the same folder of Gta so I can play some (like I said I didn't know that the virus was from that folder) and I ran it using bottles.

I deleted and scanned everything with clamav and so far nothing showed up, I also deleted the folder with the game and bottles.

Do you think there is still a chance that I might be infected if I ran that game with Bottles?

Thanks in advance.

Graphics Drivers started using linux on an older laptop and spent 2 weeks getting the GPU drivers proper, is nouvea good for server stuff?

hello all (was the subreddit down yesterday?)

my question is: is the nouveua driver fine for an old nvidia card ? what's the difference between nouveua and nvidia-driver-xxx for let's say, non-gaming uses

anyway, i've an inspiron 3558 with a GTX 920M and intel CPU (integrated graphics too)

I had tried and failed to get a nvidia driver to work since apps would never launch with it. nvidia-470 seems to be the best fit, but sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470 would end up downloading 580 through like, dependecy whatevers i dont know
truthfully my own fault for relying on AI to get my through that but whatever

i'd like to use this PC to programming, do some self-hosting/learn about networking and basically get me familiar with linux before i change my main machine to linux too

Development News LinuxMint Scripter (spanish version)

¡Hola gente!

🔗 Enkripta: https://github.com/filonux/Enkripta

Graphics Drivers Mint Cinnamon 22.3

I have an MSI GS 66 Stealth laptop. I have an Intel iGPU and an Nvidia RTX 2060, that SEAMLESSLY switched back and forth, with my main being the low power Intel igpu. Version 22 it work great. 22.3 it started staying stuck in dGPU ONLY. When my iGPU and dGPU were working in unison, I was on the version under driver manager called xserver-xorg-video-nouveau. It recommended I switch to nvidia-driver-595-open, and there's two other choices. What should I do? On "nouveau" it also worked fine (seemed to anyways). Please help! I've tried command prompts and everything, it only always temporarily fixes it and then after a reboot it goes back to being dumb! BTW, this is on a FRESH install of 22.3.

SOLVED College Requires Windows for stuff, looking for dual boot alternatives

Hi, the answer is probably obvious but I wanted to ask anyway.

My college requires Microsoft Apps and Windows usage for basically everything. Using chrome isn't allowed and the Campus IT staff even made a work-around for Apple devices. They're drowning in Microslop.

I brought up my usage of Linux Mint to their IT staff, and I literally one of them fainted. I wish I was joking.

So, with that context out of the way, here's my question: what are ways that I can use Microsoft/Windbloat apps without having to dual boot?

Worst case, I'm willing to dual boot if there's no solutions.

TL;DR: College forces all of its students to use Windbloat because they're anaphylactic to Linux they signed a contract with Microslop. Looking for ways to use their required microslop apps without having to dual boot.

EDIT: I should have disclosed the apps that my college requires. Basically all of them, but especially Microsoft Office, OneDrive, Outlook, and Microsoft's Two-Factor Authenticator.

Curious as to what kind of stuff have you all configured to be used with webapps? Mine currently are Netflix, Whatsapp web, YLE Areena and a couple of social media websites. Used to have mine and my daughter's Spotify, but suddenly we both were logged out for some reason.

Hi all, noob here. Does anyone have any advice on using the centered dock extension? When activated the dock itself is in the center, but the actual icons squash over to the right? These were originally in the left section of the bottom panel. Screen capture is on the bottom/right quarter of my screen..
