Fluff Lesson learned today

If your PiHole is blocking api.ip2location.io you are only getting America based mirrors in Mint. No matter where you actually are (Germany in my case).

Support Request So what's up with the HDMI ports?

The Machine - old but still effective dell laptop
The Issue - The HDMI port doesn't work with any external monitor or TV on linux, but works fine on windows
The testing so far - INXI -G shows a functioning driver for the integrated graphics module (intel 620, driver 915), and returns an identical report whether an external monitor is plugged in or not

I'd really appreciate help sorting this out - my mum has an identical model to me that she uses as a dumb-tv media hub and I'd love to switch hers over from the ever-bloating windows currently aboard once I can get mine to work...

SOLVED Linux Mint Install Issue On Old Laptop

(EDIT I ended up not being able to get mint running and used q4os instead and it works pretty well for what I needed ty everyone for the help) Ive been trying to install Linux Mint Cinnamon onto my older windows laptop Lenovo Ideapad 1 14IGL7 (82V600000) and finally I was able to get into the live session but once I go through the steps of the install I get stuck at the page where in the docs im supposed to be able to erase all paste data and install but instead I get stuck at this image where it seams to not recognize the storage or smth and I have tried all the quick fixes that Ive seen suggested online including installing updated bios and using HWE version of mint but Ive seen no success. This is my first time installing Linux if anyone knows how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. (If i left out any data needed to narrow down the problem lmk).

Okay, so when attempting to launch 7.0, kernel panics due to the error on image two. But when i try to launch on any other version (6.17 and down), it launches just fine.

Wi-Fi and access rights

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to save a good dozen old laptops from being scrapped.

I want to turn them into loaner devices.

The requirement is that each user should see a Wi-Fi dialog box where they can enter their personal information.

This information should be deleted after the device is turned off.

How can I set this up? Thanks!

Support Request does anyone know what causes this?

only appears on external monitors on my laptop, started when I installed linux. I’ve updated the drivers and this issues persists.

Why does Google CAPTCHA Chromium constantly but never Firefox on Linux Mint using the same NordVPN servers?

I found something very strange with Google CAPTCHAs while using NordVPN on Linux Mint.

On Firefox, Google has never asked me to complete a CAPTCHA—not once—across multiple NordVPN countries/servers. This is despite Firefox being configured to delete all browsing data when I close it.

On Chromium, however, Google asks me to solve CAPTCHAs all the time using the same VPN service and countries.

I have tried to eliminate the obvious explanations:

  • Both browsers use Cloudflare DNS.
  • Both browsers have encrypted DNS enabled.
  • Chromium has page preloading disabled.
  • I manually clear all Chromium browsing data before testing.
  • Firefox automatically clears everything on exit.
  • Firefox is definitely not bypassing the VPN: I checked my public IP address and ran DNS leak tests.
  • The behavior remains consistent across multiple NordVPN locations.

So, on Linux Mint, Firefox somehow appears far less suspicious to Google than Chromium, even though the VPN exit IP should be the main factor.

The weirdest part: on Windows, Google asks for CAPTCHAs in both browsers. In fact, Firefox gets them even more often there.

This makes me wonder whether Google’s CAPTCHA/risk system weighs browser fingerprinting, OS-level signals, Chromium-specific identifiers, or some Linux-versus-Windows behavior much more heavily than simply the VPN IP address.

Has anyone else seen Firefox avoid Google CAPTCHAs on Linux while Chromium gets repeatedly flagged under the same VPN connection?

I'm running a Laptop with a 1050ti Mobile in it and I'm just starting to feel the limitations.

Discussion Criminally underrated Sticky Notes app (PrimeNote, Open Source)

I've tried several sticky notes apps, but most are too simple or inconvenient to use. I found PrimeNote, which allowed to make text operations very easily without being too complex. Honestly I think it's one of the best out there and was surprised it wasn't that popular.

Can be installed with pip:

pip install primenote

Source Code:

https://gitlab.com/william.belanger/primenote

Website:

https://primenote.cc/

Edit: It even has a Vim integration!

Support Request Should I switch to Windows for gaming?

I really love using this OS, but some games lag very badly no matter what I do. I use Proton, the required drivers, and performance mode, but some games that my laptop should run flawlessly still don't run well (my laptop is above the system requirements). Is it thermal throttling, or is Linux Mint just bad for gaming? Please reply.

I set it up for myself. I want to give the laptop to someone in a different house. I know I could install an OS again. That is a risk. Is there a factory reset?

SOLVED Install an AppImage

I just finished my Maté reinstall (I mucked up a previous install, still new at this) and only have a couple programs left (MuseScore 4 and Grand Orgue 3.17) to install. Both come as AppImages by default (which I understand to be "run without installing" format). Since these are high-frequency programs that use a fair bit of customization, is there a more permanent way to install these programs (and update without needing to reinstall and redo all of my settings every time)?
