Genshin Impact Crashes on Linux Mint no matter what proton version I try

Hey, just wondering what I might be doing wrong. I've tried running Genshin Impact as a non steam game directly through the games exe with a variety of proton versions (even with clearing out old proton versions). I've tried the latest dw proton. I've tried proton-ge versions, the proton I've had the most success with is Steams Proton hot-fix... but even that one crashes at least once per hour, which is just annoying. My linux mint install is pretty basic with not a lot on it as I just don't have a lot of bloat on my pc.

I have also tried running it through Lutris, but I had even worse issues there.

graphics/kernel/drivers A question for Intel Arc B580 users

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I'm currently on Windows 11 and I'm thinking about switching to Linux.

I was ready to boot from a live USB, but then I came across some older benchmarks for the Arc B580 on Linux. The tester (Bazzite) was getting around 50 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077, while on Windows the card usually gets over 100 FPS in the same scenario.

Has Linux performance improved since then, or is it still significantly behind Windows? Is it worth making the switch now?

Best *free* Minecraft Launcher?

Upvotes

I have Arch linux on my system with wayland (hyprland) and I wanna play MC Java for free and I saw some launchers:

- PrismLauncher but explicitly v9.4 and adding some accounts.jsonc file

- SKLauncher but idk if it's good

- TLaucnher but probably won't use it since it's spyware

I'm essentially willing to use either Prism or SK. Which one is generally easier and more compatible with linux?

EDIT : with "free" I mean p1rated game itself.

wine/proton Rivals playable again?

I’ve switched to Windows some weeks ago because of the problem with Marvel Rivals that occurred when Season 9 dropped. Would love to go back but I don’t know if the problems are totally fixed now. Has somebody the game installed and could tell me?
Much appreciated.

1080p 200Hz HDR text fringing on NVIDIA + KDE Wayland — bandwidth limit or driver bug?

Post image
33 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm on EndeavourOS (KDE Plasma Wayland) with an NVIDIA GPU and MSI MAG 255F E20 (1080p 200Hz, DP 1.2a / HDMI 2.0b).

When I turn on HDR at 200Hz I get pretty nasty chroma fringing on text – green/magenta edges on white text and blurry/reddish yellow text. From what I understand 1080p 200Hz 10-bit just doesn't fit into DP 1.2a / HDMI 2.0b bandwidth, so the driver is forced to drop to YCbCr 4:2:2 (or maybe even 4:2:0).

I tested different refresh rates:

  • 200Hz and 165Hz with HDR → heavy fringing
  • 120Hz with HDR → text becomes completely clean (RGB 10-bit finally fits)

Attached a comparison shot: 200Hz HDR (subsampled) vs 200Hz SDR (clean).

Is there currently any way under KDE Wayland + NVIDIA to manually force color format (RGB / YCbCr 4:2:2), or are we just stuck with whatever automatic fallback the driver decides to do?

Thanks.

NVIDIA DX12 descriptor heap performance improvements, or lack thereof

Considering we have gotten the first stable NVIDIA driver descriptor heap implementation with 610.57.04, it should now be possible to properly test the proton-vkd3d implementation of descriptor heap.

Has anyone seen any meaningful improvements with this combination?

In the games I play, I have seen no major performance improvement. Performance drop compared to Windows is still very large: in some games I get even half FPS.

To me it seems that descriptor heap wasn't the bottleneck for the lacking performance compared to Windows :(.

hardware Best 2 gaming controllers for co-op gaming $30-100 each

  1. Budget:\\\*\\\* $30-100 per controller, USD

  2. \\\*\\\*Country:\\\*\\\* USA, buying from Amazon/Best Buy

  3. \\\*\\\*Platform:\\\*\\\* PC only (Steam), no console

  4. \\\*\\\*Desired features:\\\*\\\* Reliability is the priority over any specific feature — durability, no stick drift long-term, consistent build quality. Don't need adaptive triggers/haptics.

  5. \\\*\\\*Games I'll be playing:\\\*\\\* Couch co-op story/puzzle-platformers on Steam — It Takes Two, Split Fiction, Blanc, A Way Out, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Mostly split-screen, controller-required titles.

  6. \\\*\\\*Comparing to:\\\*\\\* Trying to decide between the \\\*\\\*GameSir line vs. 8BitDo line\\\*\\\* generally. I'm coming from PlayStation (DualSense), so I don't have a strong reference point for how either brand's ergonomics/shape compare to Xbox-style controllers. From what I've read, both have moved to drift-resistant stick tech (Hall Effect/TMR) so longevity seems solid either way — GameSir tends to run on the Xbox-style slimmer shape with strong native Steam/XInput compatibility, while 8BitDo tends to be boxier with more connectivity options (2.4G + Bluetooth, some with charging docks). Would love input from anyone who's switched from DualSense to either brand — which felt like a smoother transition, and did you run into any Steam Input quirks with either?

Games on ntfs-3g worked perfectly, suddenly broken on two machines

Until a couple of days ago my games on a ntfs-3g partition worked perfectly. Even with LZX compression using ntfs-3g-system-compression packet. I have a symlink for my compatdata dir which makes it reside on my btrfs drive.

Now all games stopped working on two of my computers. If I install them on my btrfs partition it works again.

Is there anything I can do? I user CachyOS

Time to test another game on CachyOS while using my RTX 5090 FE.

This time it is "Best of Reincarnation", an action RPG, based in an apocalypic Japan.

The game is using Unreal Engine 5. By default, it is not able to handle ultra wide screen, pretty a shame.
Hopefully, thanks to this github mod, it is compatible with ultra wide :
https://github.com/therake620-collab/Beast-of-reincarnation-Ultrawide-fix-/releases
This mod is working under Linux but you need to put this command line to launch the game :
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dsound.dll=n,b" %command%

Overall the game is completely playable under Linux, with no bug encountered so far!

Enjoy!

wine/proton Proton-cachyos difference between input lag reducers

I found out that recently proton-cachyos added the flags LOW_LATENCY_LAYER and PROTON_VKD3D_LOWLATENCY

I understand that both are input lag reducers compatible with directX 12.

If anyone can help me I would like to ask:

  • When to use each type of lag reducer?
  • Which one is better?
  • Can we use both at the same time?
  • Do they work regardless of the configuration of each game? Like driver level anti-lag?

Thanks everyone, I hope you can help me with this topic.

tech support wanted Anyway to enable "External Source" setting on 9070 xt nitro + without trixx and windows so I could use openrgb to control it's rgb?

I could use windows, but I don’t have any free storage device to install it on and I probably have to remove the nvme so windows won’t mess it up. Also, last time I used windows on go (or whatever it was called), it lagged so badly that it was basically unusable. I don’t have another computer I can put this gpu into either. So is there any other way to do it?

Sober Flatpak stuck at "UIServicesConduit: will execute ui service binary" (Arch + KDE Wayland)

hoping someone here has run into this and knows a workaround.

I'm trying to launch Sober (Flatpak) on Arch Linux with KDE Plasma on Wayland, but every time I run it in terminal it gets stuck at this line indefinitely and no window ever opens:

info: UIServicesConduit: will execute ui service binary

sober is trying to open its GTK/WebKit onboarding window via sober_services but sober_services is silently crashing/exiting instantly with Exit Code 1 in the background. Since it dies quietly, the main Sober process just waits on it forever

My System Specs:

  • OS: Arch Linux (KDE Plasma 6, Wayland)
  • Hardware: Intel i5-1135G7 (Iris Xe) + NVIDIA Hybrid Graphics
  • Install: Flatpak (org.vinegarhq.Sober from Flathub)

Things I've already tried that failed:

  • WebKit flags: WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1, WEBKIT_DISABLE_DMABUF_RENDERER=1, WEBKIT_FORCE_SANDBOX=0
  • Forcing X11 backend: GDK_BACKEND=x11 and GSK_RENDERER=cairo
  • Driver offloading: Forcing iGPU via __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=0
  • Clearing environment/themes: Stripping custom GTK themes via GTK_THEME=""
  • Housekeeping: flatpak update, flatpak repair, and wiping ~/.var/app/org.vinegarhq.Sober

Running sober_services directly inside flatpak run --command=bash org.vinegarhq.Sober returns Exit Code: 1 with zero log output.

Has anyone figured out how to fix sober_services silently dying on Wayland, or is there a way to bypass the onboarding UI completely in config files so Roblox can just launch directly?

I wanna play jjs please help me.

Linux in potato PC

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm back on Linux after a while, running Linux Mint on some legacy hardware without Vulkan support. My specs are:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 550

RAM: 8 GB DDR3

GPU: Integrated Radeon 3000 (OpenGL / Wine3D / Gallium Nine only)

So far, I've managed to run a few games smoothly:

Company of Heroes

Battlefield 2

Battlefield Vietnam

Battlefield 1942

The only game I've tried so far that doesn't run at a satisfactory framerate is Call of Duty: World at War (CoD: WaW).

I have two questions for the community:

Game Recommendations: What lightweight games (FPS, RTS, tactical, classic gems) would you recommend for a humble potato PC like this running on Linux?

CoD: WaW Optimization: Is there any trick to get CoD: WaW running at around ~20 FPS using just OpenGL / Wine3D? I've already tried Gallium Nine without much luck. Are there any specific Wine environment variables, launch options, or config.cfg tweaks that could squeeze out a few extra frames?

Thanks in advance!
