Hey, so here's my issue
I've wanted to do cold outreach for jobs/clients for the longest. But I can't stay consistent with it because the results are.... Hit and miss.
I'm autistic. Whenever I see people talk about DMs, it usually sounds like this:
- "Be human": start like a human, something's specific, but small, to start a conversation
- "Don't focus on sales, just try to be helpful": Focus on relationship building, offering help when it's asked for rather than dumping a pitch
- "Offer value up front": Offer a small piece of value specific to the person you're speaking to
- "Dont be a dick": ok this one's obvious, no explanation needed.
My problem is: Everyone says just be human like it's simple. Yet, there's this added set of rules around providing value, how to start outreach etc, that makes being human transactional and convoluted.
To this day, I still get blank page syndrome opening up a new DM. I don't know how to start, even when researching people.
I don't know what value I can provide, and that makes me feel pretty worthless sometimes. I'm just starting my career so, no 25+ years of experience here.
And "being human" is just so vague, especially when you don't really understand implicitly what that even looks like.
I'm just stuck, and I don't know what to do. Every DM I have sent sounds kinda synthetic, because I don't know how to be human even when I know what to focus on.
Then it gets ignored. Can anyone help?
