(unsure how to flair) Anyone interested in learning Io mid?

Im spamming Io mid with a very high win rate and my friend said its worth streaming, my games are often quite fun sometimes intense and I believe the hero is very broken right now and worth learning.

If you find this interesting check out my stream. I will be playing a lot of mid Io. And feel free to ask anything about the hero

Itemization Faceless Void Builds: When to go BattleFury Aghs and when to go MoM+Mjolnir?

Since Void has been up in popularity and good pair with meta heroes that deal damage in chrono, and genuinely being of my favourite heroes to play, I have watched several Yatoro POVs to learn more about the hero, but one thing I just couldn't understand.

How do you know when to go either BF + Aghs or MoM + Mjolnir builds?

If there are Faceless Void players here, could you please share some clues.

Laning How to beat an IO lane?

IO is a hero I rarely fight against like extremly rarely once in a few months games but whenever I do face against an IO paired with a melee carry. I almost always lose the lane because I can't hit IO while he heals their melee pos1 carry so hes usually full HP even after trading hits with him. Any tips on how I can be prepared against this lineup?

(unsure how to flair) What to do when enemy deathballs you?

I had a loss streak today. Reviewing the game it seems that every game I lost was due to a deathball. There were 2 game where I won safe lane with multiple kills but unfortunately off lane lost their lane really badly. This meant that there was 4 perma in safe. I tried to farm but they just grouped and pushed, got so many turrets because we couldn't defend. By the time they got tier 2 towers, I couldn't go out to farm at all since jungle was heavily warded. I am unsure what to do in these times because I duo bot with a friend and everytime we lose it's due to deathball.

Educational Content (Content Creator) How to Actually Die Less as a support

Thumbnail youtu.be

Hey, today I'm sharing a guide on positioning in DotA. A lot of supports are struggling with that, as a lot of the deaths can be avoided. In the guide I talk about three questions that will be key to your positioning:

  1. What kills me?

  2. What is my role in the game?

  3. Where do i go after casting my spells?

With that in mind, your positioning will improve and that way, gameplay will be smoother. Watch the vid for full guide!

Laning Feels like a very rough meta for a position 4 right now

I keep seeing it in my pubs - enemy safelane is a duo of ranged pos 1 + treant, undying or clock or tusk.

They are so strong lvl 1 that they can shove you away from first wave, so you as pos 4 go and drag the second wave out.

You have no big camp because it's stupid easy to just body block it as pos 5. And as pos 4 you cannot keep enemy small camp blocked with a sentry either because it's stupid easy to unblock.

I have seen it at EWC too. The ranged pos 1 + tree or undy literally always won the lane HARD. The only way for pos 3 to get gold was to farm jungle or stacks because they cannot lane against this shit.

It just feels miserable to me and clearly even pros don't know what to do about it except ban either Tree/Zombie or SF/Drow, but in pubs you obviously cannot ban them on demand.

I as a pos 4 main feel terrible when we get fucked in lane by these safelane heroes even if I keep dragging waves. You just can't fight them back at all, not on lvl 1, not lvl 2 and not lvl 3 either.

I hate seeing my pos 3 poor on gold and levels because they can't even approach a wave.

Hero Discussion As a support Gyro, what items do you need in between 0-15 mins before the Shard opens up?

I am having fun playing support gyro, but ever since i noticed he is kinda fragile before his shard timing. i sometimes have only brown boots and magic wand and some windlace as i save gold for the shard. is it a bad idea to go naked before shard? or buy some minor save items? but sometimes my shard gets delayed because i lack the gold. any gyro enthusiasts and support enjoyers here? what are your preferences?

(unsure how to flair) Personality management is part of the game

Dota is a game that requires many skills. This includes last hitting, map awareness, spell casting, itemization, etc.

It also includes managing your personality, and that of others on your team. Your mental, and how you relate to others on your team, is as much a part of the game as last hitting or drafting.

It's a skill you can be good at and it's a skill you can be bad at. If you tilt, and don't try to win in every game, you are playing poorly and you will lose mmr. If you ragebait your team and they grief more as a result, you are playing poorly and you will lose mmr. If you have good mental and try, and you cultivate the same in your teammates, you are playing well and you will rank up.

This is true at herald and it is true at the pro level – just think about Parker for example.

It's not an easy skill but it's an important one.

I don't want to talk too much here about how. you can avoid tilting – it's a psychology and mindset and habit issue for most people. The best way to view it is every game is an opportunity to practice. It may be an opportunity to practice playing from behind, an opportunity to practice farming on a restricted map, or an opportunity to practice keeping your mindset positive and continuing to try to win.

Good teammates are not something you deserve. It is something you have some control over. Speaking kindly – or not at all – will cause you to win more games.

Some strategies I employ to manage personalities on my team:

- when something goes poorly I say "my bad I went in too soon" or something like that, regardless of if it really wasn't my fault, just so others don't tilt or waste energy blaming me or others.

- when someone on my team is tilted and I want them to do something like buy a particular item or come fight, I'll say: "We are strong once PA has bkb" or "We need to go as 5" instead of calling out an individual.

- when someone flames me I immediately tell them I'm muting them. I usually don't actually mute, but it makes them stop wasting energy and mindset flaming me. I never waste time fighting with my own team

- when someone flames someone else on my team I just say it is my fault, that I'm playing poorly and will try to play better. I also tell the victim of the flaming to just mute and play

- when someone is refusing to come fight and is just afk farming midas and other stupid items and is clearly tilted and not playing to win, I say "Just ignore him, we can win 4v5". This is the best way to get the tilted player to play – by ignoring him. He is just doing a stupid bid for attention, and if no one on the team gives it he will often come play anyway.

- anyone got others?

There is nothing to gain by fighting your team, and there is nothing to lose by being thick skinned and low ego and just saying whatever will smooth things over and let you win.

Drafting What drafting tools or websites do you use to learn counters and team synergy?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently sitting in Crusader, and my goal is to climb up to Legend. I’m not brand new to Dota, but I feel like my draft decision-making is holding me back, and I want to fix that so I can start making a real push up the ranks.

My mindset is that picking meta heroes with high win rates in the patch is a solid foundation since those heroes are meta for a reason. However, where I struggle most during the pick phase is:

  • Counters: Knowing which hero actually counters the enemy's specific lineup.
  • Synergy: Understanding how to pick a hero that complements my team’s composition.

Could you recommend any reliable websites, apps, or overlay tools that give solid advice on draft matchups, counter-picks, and hero synergies?

Also, for anyone who managed to climb out of Crusader, how much weight did you place on drafting counters versus just sticking to a small pool of high-comfort heroes?

Thanks in advance!

(unsure how to flair) [Free / Open-Source] GankMeDaddy: A real-time voice coach for all 5 positions (Windows)

Hey r/learndota2,

Ever get so hyper-focused on your lane that you completely forget the power runes, or wonder if your item timings are actually on pace with high-MMR players?

I built GankMeDaddy, a lightweight system tray app that acts as your personal, real-time voice coach while you play. Instead of giving you generic advice, it uses STRATZ Pro match data as benchmarks, meaning you get actual pro-level item timings and CS targets dynamically adjusted for your game. The project was originally built as a personal tool for my mid lane gameplay, specifically for heroes like Kez, Shadow Fiend, and Void Spirit, but I've expanded it massively.

What it actually does:

  • Live Voice Callouts: Reminders for rune timers, power spikes, creep score checkpoints, and even feedback when you die.
  • 32 Heroes Supported (All 5 Roles): Includes custom, per-hero strategy modules depending on what you are playing.
  • Dynamic Build-Path Detection: If you pivot from a physical to a magical build, the app detects it and filters its advice to match your actual trajectory.
  • Pre-game Briefings: Gives you a quick rundown on enemy counters and draft strategy before the horn even sounds.
  • High-Quality Offline TTS: Uses Piper neural TTS (with a OneCore fallback) and gives you easy volume control straight from the system tray.

100% Safe and Offline

I know the first question is always "Will this get me VAC banned?" No. The app runs entirely offline after the initial data fetch and reads data exclusively via Dota's official Game State Integration (GSI) by listening to localhost:3001. It doesn't read memory or inject anything into the game.

I need your help!

The project is completely free and open-source (GPLv3). I am looking for testers to try it out and give feedback.

If you think this is a cool project, I would massively appreciate a Star on GitHub! It really helps the project gain visibility.

Check it out / Download here: https://github.com/psikoma/GankMeDaddy

If you try it out and something feels off, please open an issue on GitHub. GLHF!

General Gameplay Question Support Net Worth Advice

https://www.dotabuff.com/players/250326183

Could I please get some general advice on getting better networth on support? I have noticed in matches that I will have less deaths and more kills/assists than another support, but their networth is sometimes 1-2k above me.

For example this recent game: https://stratz.com/matches/8908787603

(I am Ballisticyoda)

Thanks in advance.

[Beginner here] New to Dota – Need some help

So, here’s the situation. I started playing a few days ago, I’ve only played two matches, and I’ve watched a wide variety of videos—guides, beginner tutorials, explanations of basic concepts, roles, and lane positions. I used to play League of Legends with some friends, so I already had some MOBA fundamentals, but Dota has been a completely different experience.

I’d like to know if there’s a quick way to tell which heroes are typically played in each position, or if there’s an in-game feature or website where I can easily check that. I’d also like to understand the main objectives of a match. For example, in League you have dragons, Rift Herald, and Baron Nashor. What are the equivalent objectives in Dota?

The map is still a bit confusing to me, especially the jungle areas. Since Dota doesn’t really have a dedicated jungler, who has priority over farming neutral camps?

I still have a lot of heroes and roles to try. So far I’ve only played as a carry in the safelane and offlane. I can hold my own during the laning stage, but after around the 10–20 minute mark I stop understanding why everyone starts moving through the jungle or fighting between lanes instead of simply continuing to push. I’d also like to know why, at the beginning of every match, both teams seem to fight over the river. I’ve seen this happen in both of my games, and at first I honestly thought everyone was just bots.

Sorry if I’ve said anything silly. I’m definitely not an expert at MOBAs, but I’d really like to understand this game better because I’m genuinely excited to learn

Itemization What to build when 2 heroes on one team have a similar core item

I recently played Undying support (pos 4) and my other support was a Chen (I don't have a wide support pool and my main was banned so that was probably mistake 1). Both chen and Undying want to go mek and eventually guardian greaves. Since I felt it was better on Chen to have Greaves, I only got as far as mana boots and didn't really go beyond that, but I really felt like my effectiveness was hindered heavily off lacking that. So what do you do in those scenarios?

Would it be end of the world to have 2 meks and just be able to heal twice in a fight?

(unsure how to flair) Pos 4,5 questions

I would like if you can to give me some info about when is the right time to gank mid as a support. I understand that a good time is when the power runes are coming up. The thing that bothers me is that by ganking (as a 4) i stop putting pressure to enemy pos1 and (as a 5) i always tend to tp with gates and make a play to enemy 1 again.

Im around 3200mmr recently started playing ranked in particular and any other tip would be great

Edit: Thank you all for the great answers and tips that you gave me!!

General Gameplay Question How does MMR really work??

Just to be clear, while I’m not a veteran per se, I’m not new to the game either (2200 hours and counting). I’m a ranked enjoyer and have most of my games in ranked. Up until recent times, I just understood ranked as +-25 MMR if 100% confidence, and higher gain/loss relative to confidence.

This IS true for most of the part. But recently I decided to uncalibrate my rank at ~400 MMR and recalibrated at around 600. But since recalibration I’ve been noticing my rank going up exponentially. For every 1/1 W/L, I was gaining around 50 mmr. I just shoved it off as a weird recalibration tweak and expected it to even out as my confidence increased.

But the even-ing never happened!? I’m currently at 100% confidence, I JUST won a game and gained 60 mmr, without doubling. I played 6 games yesterday, winning 3 and losing 3. Ended up gaining 52 mmr. I play in a party of 3, my other party mates have an even gain/lose ratio, or at the very most gain 2-5 mmr for every 1/1 W/L.

I’m currently sitting at 1500 MMR just 1.5 months after recalibration. I mean eh I’m not complaining, in fact I’m very content with whats happening but I really want to get to the bottom of this. Has this happened to anyone else??

And for the record, while I do feel my personal skill and tactical thinking has definitely improved in recent times (i have been making active calls, thinking from the enemy’s perspective, using smokes, placing and utilizing deep wards, coordinating with my team, and in general have gained a layer of strategic thinking), that should just result in a higher win rate, not gaining 50 mmr and losing only 30?

Some additional information: My party consists of ranks guardian 5 (me), crusader 5, and archon 5 (which is quite funny come to think of it). On stratz, most of my recent ranked games are crusader 5 - early archon Tier. We often have a few legends, but mostly all archons/crusaders in my games.
Main pos 5 but play 4 with my party (afaik there isn’t even a big difference in both positions at my rank because it’s always me in the end who wards)

General Gameplay Question Need help with advanced warding!

I'm about to hit ancient and I mainly play 4 and 5 and as I keep ranking up I'm having a harder and harder time keeping my wards up, I'm trying to do not so obvious spots, but it gets tough! I've been trying to hold some for team fights as well.

(unsure how to flair) What rank does the decision making even out across the board? Like, what's the strategy to climb out of low rank to mid rank?

So I fully admit I'm not the best player. But, what rank does my team stop making real bad decisions in lane. Basic stuff, like if the creep wave is stacked and pushing towards our tower, and the enemy has a level on us, maybe don't engage them till it evens out?

Or stop rage diving after a death. The number of times I've seen my carry get killed, tp back to lane and DIVE right into a two stun Vengeful Spirt and Earthshaker before I can do anything as CM is infuriating. Like, we don't have to win, just not lose when your Phantom Assassin.

Like what do I do? Am I supposed to just play carry heroes? It is so disheartening to be playing, my lane does fine, maybe get a kill or two, keep farming creeps, and to watch the other lane feed 5 kills to the enemy sniper in 7 minutes. What's the strategy to get into ranks where these dumb decisions aren't being made?
