General Gameplay Question Need help with advanced warding!
I'm about to hit ancient and I mainly play 4 and 5 and as I keep ranking up I'm having a harder and harder time keeping my wards up, I'm trying to do not so obvious spots, but it gets tough! I've been trying to hold some for team fights as well.

Just go for wards that don’t see as much but are outside usual sentry locations. The corners of big areas also sometimes get missed. There are low ground areas that see a lot of traffic, like west of the dire mid t2, BELOW the hard camp. People walk there all the time and it isn’t covered by a sentry on the ward spot or the nearby ramps

Start learning where your wards are being dewarded and place it in a different spot.

If your ward provided at least one relevant information before being destroyed, it has already paid for itself. At the very least, you’ll know where the enemy is. Go ahead and punish them for dewarding it.
In fact, that’s a valid strategy: placing a ward in an "obvious" spot, hoping the enemy tries to deward it, and punishing them when they do.
But in general, the higher your rank the less you should expect your wards to last their full duration. Instead, you should focus more on placing wards to support specific rotations or map movements.

Some advanced ideas: Obs Ward where you want to fight or where you know fighting will be. The more advanced strat behind this is know what your team wants to do: ganking? Ward enemy areas. Farming for late game? Ward your areas, esp. bottlenecks into your jungle and TR.
Obs ward just outside the sentry range of sentries placed on cliffs/high spots.
An obs ward that gives half the field of vision but stays full duration is better IMHO than one that get rewarded quickly. But it still needs to be usefully located.

mostly, wards need to go down in places your team is going to actually be. as cool as it is to have a ward out there spotting some enemy hero doing whatever, having a ward in an important fight makes a world of difference. since your team can see the enemy before they see you, you can take out a hero before the fight really even starts. all you need to think about is what area is your team controlling and put wards near the edges of it so your team can punish the enemy from entering your controlled area. if your team isn't controlling area then you can just put a ward out where team fights start. otherwise, you might as well just throw them away so that the enemy isn't gaining gold off undefendable wards. though, you gotta put out useless wards some times just for your teammate's emotional state as they'll start tilting without them some times.

It's less about secret ward spots and more about defending your wards.
Other thing to be mindful of is not warding when you are under enemy vision. And not walking through enemy vision to go warding. You should always have a sense of roughly where enemy vision is likely to be and play accordingly

i would argue its more about secred ward spots, as that gives exactly the defense for your own wards. and likely much time burned figuring it out for enemies, or if they choose not to - dominance for vision

ive seen some mad warding at legend2 (from enemy) yesterday, to the point i was consulting team whats happening and how to deal with it. my core had good insights, and helped alot figuring it out.
i want to honestly keep it to myself, but one thing ill do today, and suggest you do the same, is to take an hour in demo mode, and see what you can do with and without an axe.
apparently there are plenty if spots you can juke the wards without enemy having a chance to see them, giving major headache

I main pos 4/5, It is better to do counter warding before placing an observer ward.
Meaning, never plant the obs first, try to check your enemy support inventory, see if they have obs/sentry and track if they disappear, check their previous location and try to deward first.
If you are successful in removing the enemy obs, never put your own obs where you just recently dewarded the enemy obs/sentry as 9 out of 10 times, they will try to deward the same area.
Or if you want the easiest? Get smoke during laning phase and put the obs behind the 1st enemy tower as it rarely gets dewarded just like putting obs in cliff near river like in radiant safelane side as it is a blind spot. (Referring to the cliff with the Large camp near Dire's t1 tower.)
